White Paper #1: Implementation, Introduction, And Methods, Alexander Fronk, Krista Gurko, Ann Berhout Austin

Human Development and Family Studies Faculty Publications

The purpose of this series of white papers is to report on the findings of an initial evaluation of Utah’s Care About Childcare program (CAC) using an implementation science framework. Care About Childcare is Utah’s version of the federal Quality Rating and Improvement System (QRIS) for child care providers, but unlike other states’ QRISs, Utah’s QRIS is a Quality Recognition and Information System. CAC was developed by the Utah Office of Child Care (OCC). It is a strengths-based, voluntary program in which providers identify and report the quality that they have achieved beyond the basic licensing requirements.

Visualization: Seeing Contracts For What They Are, And What They Could Become, Thomas Barton, Gerlinde Berger-Walliser, Helena Haapio Jan 2013

Visualization: Seeing Contracts For What They Are, And What They Could Become, Thomas Barton, Gerlinde Berger-Walliser, Helena Haapio

Faculty Scholarship

Commercial contract users read their contract documents infrequently, and understand them inadequately. The disincentives may be several: contract language may be too technical and too long; contracts may be organized around ensuring or avoiding legal liability rather than providing guidance toward performing contractual responsibilities; or contracts may rarely include frameworks that would prompt the parties to explore new opportunities. For whatever reason, the neglect by users of contractual documents can lead not only to unpleasant surprises in the performance or enforcement of particular contractual duties, but also to chronic underuse of contracts as potential instruments for planning, innovation, commercial relationship-building …

The Roma And Wall Street/Ceos: Linguistic Construction Of Identity In U.S. And Canadian Crime Reports, Theresa Catalano Jan 2013

The Roma And Wall Street/Ceos: Linguistic Construction Of Identity In U.S. And Canadian Crime Reports, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Discriminatory practices against Roma (also known as Romanies) occur on a daily basis in many countries around the world through media discourse. This paper investigates the representation of Romanies in U.S. and Canadian online newspaper crime reports and compares this representation to Wall Street/CEOs in crime reports demonstrating how identity of both groups is constructed through a variety of linguistic and non-linguistic strategies. Drawing on Mayr and Machin’s (2012) critical linguistic analysis of the language of crime, this multimodal study incorporates a variety of tools such as Critical Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics in order to dig below the surface …

Addressing Implicit Bias In The Courts, Pamela M. Casey, Roger K. Warren, Fred L. Cheesman, Jennifer K. Elek Jan 2013

Addressing Implicit Bias In The Courts, Pamela M. Casey, Roger K. Warren, Fred L. Cheesman, Jennifer K. Elek

Court Review: Journal of the American Judges Association

Fairness is a fundamental tenet of American courts. Yet, despite substantial work by state courts to address issues of racial and ethnic fairness,2 public skepticism that racial and ethnic minorities receive consistently fair and equal treatment in American courts remains widespread.3 Why?

THE INFLUENCE OF IMPLICIT ASSOCIATIONS

Perhaps one explanation may be found in an emerging body of research on implicit cognition. During the last two decades, new assessment methods and technologies in the fields of social science and neuroscience have advanced research on brain functions, providing a glimpse into what National Public Radio science correspondent Shankar Vedantam refers to …

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart Jan 2013

The Birth Of Mass Media: Printmaking In Early Modern Europe, Alison Stewart

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Faculty Publications and Creative Activity

In the digital age, when images and films can be streamed with lightning speed onto computers at the press of a button, it is hard to fathom the society-altering impact the new printed image had when it first appeared in Europe around 1400. The introduction of printed images or repeatable pictorial statements irrevocably changed the practice of manually producing images one by one, by making them available in identical form, as multiple examples printed onto paper, a material that was newly available in Europe. Such multiples appeared first as independent images, then as book illustrations, but either way, this process …

Art As A Catalyst For Resilience: Women Artists With A Life-Threatening Illness, Susan Firestone Jan 2013

Art As A Catalyst For Resilience: Women Artists With A Life-Threatening Illness, Susan Firestone

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

This phenomenological inquiry focused on the experiences of 12 professional women artists diagnosed with major medical illnesses, mostly cancer. Data from three in-‐depth interviews with each participant indicated that their beliefs, personal strengths, learned skills, and lived experiences were fundamental to their commitment to art as a way of life. The overarching question of whether long-‐term involvement in creative practices acted as a catalyst for resilience during and after treatments became the seminal exploration in this study. Data analysis used methods for qualitative research devised by Moustakas (1994), Giorgi (1985), and Forinash (2012), and a conversational approach in interviews suggested …

Sustainable Systems Thinking In Communication Design Education, Yvette M. Perullo Jan 2013

Sustainable Systems Thinking In Communication Design Education, Yvette M. Perullo

Open Access Theses

Design ingenuity and sustainability can, and should, work together. Designers have an ethical responsibility to provide ideas that do no harm, and better yet, create positive solutions that nourish the environment, social and cultural structures, and the economy. This approach, referred to as sustainable systems thinking--in contrast to more common design approaches--looks at a problem as an integrated component of an entire network. Sustainable systems thinking helps designers, clients, and consumers to consider who or what is connected to the design outcome, where the project will have positive and negative ecological, financial, cultural or social impacts, and make the entire …

Community As Client: Defining Social Design As A Means Of Designing For Good, Ryan Kough Gibboney Jan 2013

Community As Client: Defining Social Design As A Means Of Designing For Good, Ryan Kough Gibboney

Open Access Theses

Approaching the design field today is a significant quantity of societal needs that have potential to be resolved through systematic design initiatives. There is increasing curiosity around the designer's role and responsibility within society; a belief that designers have the power to make social change happen in their own communities. Many neighborhoods with driven community members and professional designers are working together to turn to design as problem solving, as social activism on a local scale. But how do we make this sustainable?

To create a systematic change, designers must rethink the processes in which they view the problems and …

From The Philippines To The Field Museum: A Study Of Ilongot (Bugkalot) Personal Adornment, Sarah E. Carlson

Honors Projects

Abstract: The Philippine Collection at The Field Museum contains over 10,000 objects, including hundreds of objects of personal adornment. As an intern at The Field Museum in the summer of 2012, I got to experience the collection first-hand and began examining six ornaments from the Ilongot peoples of the Philippines. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Ilongot wore ornaments to visually communicate social meaning about themselves, their villages, and their relationships. The Ilongot were a headhunting society with fearsome warriors who beheaded their enemies. These hunters wore delicately crafted earrings and headdresses to mark their masculinity and …

Social Story Intervention For Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing, Kaylee Mccollum Jan 2013

Social Story Intervention For Children Who Are Deaf Or Hard-Of-Hearing, Kaylee Mccollum

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Originally developed for children with mild autism, a Social Story is a short story that describes an ambiguous or troublesome situation and provides an appropriate response to that situation. Several research studies have confirmed the effectiveness of Social Stories in decreasing undesirable behaviors in children with mild, moderate, and severe autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, limited research has been conducted to determine the efficacy of Social Stories in modifying behaviors of children who do not have autism. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of Social Stories in decreasing undesirable behaviors in children who are deaf or …

Using Multisensory Input To Supplement Articulation Intervention, Caitlin A. Maxheimer

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of multisensory input on the discrimination and production abilities of a preschool aged child with a speech sound disorder. The study examined the effect of Van Riper's traditional articulation intervention approach supplemented with multisensory cues taken from the Sound Strategies for Sound Production resource (Treatment B), in contrast to Van Riper's traditional articulation intervention approach alone (Treatment A). One male child, aged 4 years, 4 months, diagnosed with a mild-moderate speech sound disorder, participated in this single subject, alternating treatment study. Treatment was provided for 30 minutes, 3 days a …

Utilizing Telemedicine In The Icu: Does It Impact Teamwork?, Elizabeth Lazzara Jan 2013

Utilizing Telemedicine In The Icu: Does It Impact Teamwork?, Elizabeth Lazzara

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Adverse events and medical errors plague the healthcare system. Hospital acquired infections and teamwork are some of the biggest contributor to these adverse outcomes. In an effort to mitigate these problems, administrators and clinicians alike have developed mechanisms, such as telemedicine. However, little research has been conducted investigating the role of telemedicine on teamwork -- a fundamental component of quality patient care. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the impact of telemedicine on teamwork behaviors and subsequent teamwork attitudes and cognitions during a common medical task, rounds within the Trauma-Intensive Care Unit. To this …

A Study Of The Sensitivity Of Plethodon Cinereus (Caudata: Plethodontidae) To Damage-Released Cues From Conspecifics, Aaron M. Sullivan, Gregory Jensen Jan 2013

A Study Of The Sensitivity Of Plethodon Cinereus (Caudata: Plethodontidae) To Damage-Released Cues From Conspecifics, Aaron M. Sullivan, Gregory Jensen

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Some prey species vary the intensity of antipredator responses according to the perceived level of threat associated with different concentrations of chemical cues related to predation. Here, we examine whether Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) respond to different concentrations of damage-released cues from the tails of conspecifics in a threat-sensitive manner. We exposed salamanders either to a control or to damage-released cues from conspecifîcs at one of three different concentrations. We found that salamanders exposed to damage released cues significantly decreased their activity compared to salamanders exposed to a control. However, the intensity of the responses was not related to the …

Signalling And Behaviour Of Globodera Pallida In The Rhizosphere Of The Trap Crop Solanum Sisymbriifolium, Ayano Sasaki-Crawley Jan 2013

Signalling And Behaviour Of Globodera Pallida In The Rhizosphere Of The Trap Crop Solanum Sisymbriifolium, Ayano Sasaki-Crawley

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Potato cyst nematodes (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis and G. pallida, are economically important pests of potato (Solanum tuberosum) crops in potato growing regions worldwide. Integrated management is under threat, with effective nematicides increasingly being withdrawn on environmental and health grounds. Alternative strategies are urgently needed and trap cropping could be one of them. The non-tuber-bearing Solanum sisymbriifolium is regarded as an effective trap crop for PCN with strong hatching ability and immunity to PCN infection and has been used in the UK and The Netherlands. However, its mode of action is unknown. In order to shed light on the mode of …
