A Word Is Worth A Thousand Pictures: A Systemic Functional And Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Intersemiotic Evaluation In University Science Textbooks, Leo William Roehrich Jan 2013

A Word Is Worth A Thousand Pictures: A Systemic Functional And Multimodal Discourse Analysis Of Intersemiotic Evaluation In University Science Textbooks, Leo William Roehrich

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Images are an invaluable medium in science textbooks for clarifying confusing concepts and establishing a visual foundation for field related topics. The integration of image and language within a single unit of discourse builds a larger meaning than the two semiotic forms are capable of producing separately. Visual representations are chosen for their functional value in aiding linguistic explanation and also for their aesthetic value in textual enhancement. Aesthetic choice is a matter of subjective opinion. Although science writing is generally classified as objective, authors embed personal opinion in written and visual discourse. The choice of visual medium has a …

Designing Social Change: Inquiry-Based Teaching In Graphic Design, Donald Tarallo

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

This paper shares an exploratory and inquiry-based graphic design project and the resultant pedagogic approach that offers arts and design educators ideas on teaching to instigate positive social change. The author summarizes a year-long fellowship project where he worked as a change agent in service to a partnership of six non-profit, after-school arts programs in Providence, Rhode Island who are organized as the Providence Youth Arts Collaborative (PYAC).

The intention of this project was two-fold. The primary effort was to investigate ways graphic design can be strategically used to seed interest and empower youth to make positive choices with how …

Color By Numbers: An Exploration Of The Use Of Color As Classification Notation, Rachel I. Clarke Jan 2013

Color By Numbers: An Exploration Of The Use Of Color As Classification Notation, Rachel I. Clarke

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Notation is a fundamental component of a classification scheme, especially library and bibliographic classification. However, notation is often considered an afterthought or auxiliary to classification itself. With the advances in technology, classification systems, including their notation, must evolve. What, if any, possibilities lie beyond alphanumeric characters and symbols? The author explores the possible use of color as classificatory notation by looking at the traditional qualities of notation and the classificatory needs it must accommodate, various theories and standards of color, and their possible applications to classification notation. Theoretical and practical implications are considered and discussed, as well as larger implications …

The Nose Knows: Encountering The Canine In Bisclavret, Alison Langdon Jan 2013

The Nose Knows: Encountering The Canine In Bisclavret, Alison Langdon

English Faculty Publications

For much of literary history, scholars have tended to focus on the symbolic valence of animals, to read their behavior and characteristics as representative of explicitly human interests and concerns. In the past medievalists have perhaps been even more prone to this, given that many of our sources providing descriptions of animal behavior, such as bestiaries, similarly emphasize the metaphorical or allegorical over the ethological.1 Thus when we read something like Bisclavret, Marie de France’s twelfth-century Anglo-Norman lai, scholars frequently discuss its werewolf protagonist as a foil for his much more beastly if wholly human wife. Michelle Freeman, …

Reducing Communication Delay Variability For A Group Of Robots, Goncalo Martins Jan 2013

Reducing Communication Delay Variability For A Group Of Robots, Goncalo Martins

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A novel architecture is presented for reducing communication delay variability for a group of robots. This architecture relies on using three components: a microprocessor architecture that allows deterministic real-time tasks; an event-based communication protocol in which nodes transmit in a TDMA fashion, without the need of global clock synchronization techniques; and a novel communication scheme that enables deterministic communications by allowing senders to transmit without regard for the state of the medium or coordination with other senders, and receivers can tease apart messages sent simultaneously with a high probability of success. This approach compared to others, allows simultaneous communications without …

Digital Disparity Among The U.S. Army And Allied Developing Country Armies In Relation To Location On The Literal-Visual Cross-Cultural Continuum, James A. Schnell Jan 2013

Digital Disparity Among The U.S. Army And Allied Developing Country Armies In Relation To Location On The Literal-Visual Cross-Cultural Continuum, James A. Schnell

Iowa Journal of Communication

This report describes the digital disparity among the U.S. Army and allied developing country armies in relation to location on the literal-visual cross-cultural continuum. Digital technologies are recognized as spawning intercultural challenges that exist regarding the disparity in digital backgrounds among U.S. and developing country coalition forces impacting the planning and conduct of military operations. Related challenges exist within the U.S. Army education and training system and operationally for developing countries as observed via uneven adaptation of digital technologies in developing countries. The author addresses increased emphasis on visual imagery over literal messages as it relates to U.S. Army cultural …

Irony In Emmanuel Carrère’S La Moustache, Nina Ekstein Jan 2013

Irony In Emmanuel Carrère’S La Moustache, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

The subject of irony in film is a problematic one, in no small measure because of the assumption of referentiality in what is shown onscreen. I examine a form of irony that is tied to undecidability and use it to analyze La moustache (2005), which is a cinematic exploration of the possibilities for creating undecidability and its attendant tensions, exemplifying how irony may be visually communicated. Carrère's film moves into the domain of irony through a wide-ranging critique worked out through discordance.

Valuation Of Recreational Beach Quality And Water Quality Management Strategies In Oahu, Jerrod M. Penn Jan 2013

Valuation Of Recreational Beach Quality And Water Quality Management Strategies In Oahu, Jerrod M. Penn

Theses and Dissertations--Agricultural Economics

Hawaii’s pristine ocean and tropical environment is a keystone of Hawaii tourism and the state economy. Water pollution from stormwater and development threatens the beach quality to both residents and tourists. In order to understand the lost nonmarket value, we assess changes in quality of beach characteristics including water and sand quality, swimming safety conditions, and congestion using a Discrete Choice Experiment of recreational beach users. Further, we study willingness to pay (WTP) for water management strategies in Hawaii using another discrete choice experiment, including structural and nonstructural Best Management Practices, testing, monitoring, and educational efforts.

Using a mixed logit …

The Never-Ending Ethical Dilemma For Photojournalists: A Case Study Of Conflicts Between The Objective Reporter And The "Good Samaritan", Yung Soo Kim, Deborah S. Chung Jan 2013

The Never-Ending Ethical Dilemma For Photojournalists: A Case Study Of Conflicts Between The Objective Reporter And The "Good Samaritan", Yung Soo Kim, Deborah S. Chung

Iowa Journal of Communication

When covering tragedies involving human suffering, photojournalists frequently face serious ethical dilemmas that force them to choose between the position of an objective reporter and a "Good Samaritan." Recent ethical controversies, such as the New York City subway photo case in the New York Post and the domestic violence photo essay published on TIME magazine's website, are only the latest additions to this dilemma. By using the situational ethics approach, this case study examines the controversies in terms of three situational characteristics-the presence of other helpers, the intention of the victim, and the possibility of intervention by the photographer-to assess …

Singing Behavior And Geographic Variation In The Songs Of The Veery (Catharus Fuscescens) Across The Appalachian Mountains, Courtney L. Brennan Jan 2013

Singing Behavior And Geographic Variation In The Songs Of The Veery (Catharus Fuscescens) Across The Appalachian Mountains, Courtney L. Brennan

ETD Archive

The Veery (Catharus fuscescens) is a common Neotropical migrant thrush whose breeding distribution spans the Northern United States and southern Canada and continues south through the high elevations of the Appalachian Mountains. Despite its wide distribution, many aspects of Veery biology are largely unknown, including a clear characterization of song and knowledge of geographic song variation. I describe the song structure, repertoire size, and patterns of song delivery in the songs of the Veery and describe geographic song variation across four regions along the Appalachian Mountains. Visual analysis of song spectrogram images of territorial males revealed that Veeries' repertoire ranges …

Art Spiegelman's Maus As A Heteroglossic Text, Dane H. Minich Jan 2013

Art Spiegelman's Maus As A Heteroglossic Text, Dane H. Minich

ETD Archive

According to philosopher Mikhail Bakhtin, the modernist novel is the best literary form to exploit heteroglossia, or the coexistence of two or more voices within a text. It incorporates the speeches of the author, narrators, and characters, as well as languages that are indicative of social status, employment, epochs, and so on. In this essay, heteroglossia is applied to Art Spiegelman's graphic novel Maus to demonstrate that the comics medium is also a prime candidate for heteroglossic exploitation. Voice and dialect are examined in the first portion of the essay, including generational differences between the characters' language, the presence and …

Touching One Thing Deeply, I Touch Everything, Nicole Cardenas Jan 2013

Touching One Thing Deeply, I Touch Everything, Nicole Cardenas

Theses & ETDs

This is a photographic thesis that developed out of an ISP completed in January 2012. My main interest for this project is in exploring the different ways photographs relate to each other. More specifically, by creating pairs of images or diptychs, I aim to create compositions that will 'open up' for viewers, functioning in a way that proves different than photographs conceived and displayed individually. Additionally, throughout my thesis work I use images of my environment together with images of people in motion to explore the ways movement affects us by stirring memories and stimulating new feelings. I had many …

Gestures Of Solidarity The Deaf Struggle And The Professional Interpreter/Transliterator, Zachary Hudson Jan 2013

Gestures Of Solidarity The Deaf Struggle And The Professional Interpreter/Transliterator, Zachary Hudson

Theses & ETDs

Practitioners have always known that sign language interpreters/transliterators occupy a unique social and cultural position relative to the communities in which they work. Unlike spoken language interpreting, interpreters/transliterators are uniquely positioned 'between worlds'. Not only do they bridge the gap between spoken and gestural language, they bridge the gap between the socially and culturally dominant hearing world and the culturally and linguistically marginalized world of the Deaf. Yet it is apparent that current models of interpreting/transliterating contribute to an estrangement between the hearing and Deaf worlds. This project explores the current state of affairs through its specific historical and epistemological …

An Investigation Of The Look Away Behavior In Domestic Dogs, Sarah Scott Jan 2013

An Investigation Of The Look Away Behavior In Domestic Dogs, Sarah Scott

Undergraduate Review

The unique phylogenetic and ontogenetic history of domestic dogs has had an effect on the way they communicate with one another. Research suggests that domestic dogs’ ability to communicate through visual signals may vary by breed (Goodwin, Bradshaw, & Wickens 1997; Kerswell, Bennet, Butler, & Hemsworth 2009). In the current study, we investigate the effect of a visual communication signal, the look away, observed in both domestic dogs and their ancestor, the wolf, in order to examine whether or not domesticated dogs respond to this visual signal. Research indicates that domestic dogs respond appropriately to artificial dog models (Leaver & …
