Quantifying Potential Spatial Accessibility To Adult American Sign Language Classes In Los Angeles County, Caroline R. Baumann Mar 2026

Quantifying Potential Spatial Accessibility To Adult American Sign Language Classes In Los Angeles County, Caroline R. Baumann

The Geographical Bulletin

This research examines potential spatial accessibility of adult American Sign Language (ASL) learning opportunities in Los Angeles County, California (USA). Over 90% of all deaf children are born to hearing parents, who typically do not know sign language. Research has shown that deaf children whose parents learn sign language tend to have better outcomes than those who do not. Thus, adult accessibility to sign language classes is crucial for the success of deaf children. The Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method was used to calculate a provider-to-population ratio using network analysis and aggregate these ratios within population catchment areas. The …

The Leveling The Playing Field Language Acquisition Program For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Amy T. Andersen, Michelle Cline, Stephanie Renart, Tiffany Narciso Mar 2026

The Leveling The Playing Field Language Acquisition Program For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children, Amy T. Andersen, Michelle Cline, Stephanie Renart, Tiffany Narciso

Teacher Education Journal of South Carolina

Language deprivation is a nationwide epidemic despite Early Intervention (EI) programs for deaf babies. EI provides at-home services and assumes a caregiver is with their baby during the day to use the strategies they learn. However, most parents work full time, and their children attend daycare. This paper describes a pilot program for families whose deaf babies were in daycare without full access to a natural language. Deaf Language Acquisition Associates (DLAA) were placed in classrooms with deaf babies for twenty-five hours a week. The program's success resulted in funding through the state legislature and adoption statewide.

Grounded in Social Influence Theory and supported by a mixed-methods approach that combines survey data with artistic production, the study examines how authentic visual storytelling can shape consumer behavior toward eco-friendly cosmetic products. The research addresses the question: How can photography help consumers adopt a sustainable lifestyle? It also examines how social media and advertising methods impact consumer preferences and what barriers hinder eco-conscious consumption. An online survey conducted with 30 Filipino participants provided insights into consumer habits, sustainability …

Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo Mar 2026

Edges That Touch, Tommi Bonomo

LSU Master's Theses

Gender, a social construct, exists on a spectrum that is shaped by social, cultural, and embodied experience. Edges That Touch examines the instability of gender through the lens of combat sports, focusing on the way the hypermasculine environment abstracts femme identities. Informed by my lived experience, the work investigates the paradox in which empowerment and alienation coexist and destabilizes gender binaries.

Edges That Touch uses experimental graphic design processes and mixed media to recreate the psychological landscape and emotional realities that I navigated as a cisgender woman in the world of combat sports. I use visual techniques that obscure legibility …

Plastilapia: Potential Of Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Scales For Creating Bioplastics, Rain Andrea Q. Matilde, Kathlene Ann R. Aspiras-Lorenzo

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

Plastic waste is a global problem affecting General Santos City (GenSan). Though brown paper bags are alternatives, they tear easily and may cause deforestation. South Cotabato, including GenSan, produces large amounts of tilapia. Their discarded scales contain collagen that can be used to create sustainable biopolymers. This study explores the potential of tilapia scales for creating bioplastics, focusing on tensile strength and biodegradability as eco-friendly alternatives to plastics. For this study, one kilogram of raw tilapia fish scales was used. The scales were cleaned, oven-dried at 60°C for three hours, ground, and soaked in a 0.1N sodium hydroxide solution for …

De Aquí Y De Allá: Exchanging Language And Visual Culture In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Chloë M. Robinson Mar 2026

De Aquí Y De Allá: Exchanging Language And Visual Culture In The Lower Rio Grande Valley, Chloë M. Robinson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This study examines graphic design in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) as a site of cultural hybridity, shaped by transnational histories and bilingual practice. It explores how Mexican and Anglo design markers intersect and are negotiated in daily life through analysis of 2,180 visual artifacts, interviews with ten local creatives, and a survey of fifty residents. Historical research traces influences like nineteenth-century wood type and rótulo signage to contemporary advertising. Interviews reveal that local creatives navigate hybrid identities through code-switching, bilingual fluency, and borderlands experiences. Survey results show that participants’ language preferences predict how they categorize and rank typographic …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress Conference Proceedings

Visual aids are vital components of disaster risk reduction as they actively disseminate important information on preparedness and responses in disasters. However, since no established standard for effective visual aids exists in the Philippines, information is at risk of being misinterpreted or misunderstood. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of visual aids in disaster risk reduction (DRR) within the academic institution setting in the Philippines. Specifically, it identifies interactive-based and interactional-based elements across various institutions and evaluates them according to international standards. A total of nineteen (19) publicly-sourced posters—published by five (5) select academic institutions—were used to determine effectiveness …

Ethical Leadership And Funding Strategies In Nonprofit Organizations, George Edward Walker Mar 2026

Ethical Leadership And Funding Strategies In Nonprofit Organizations, George Edward Walker

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

A lack of effective funding strategies can negatively affect nonprofit program sustainability and growth. Nonprofit leaders are concerned with inadequate funding practices as they lessen organizational sustainability, donor trust, and reliable program delivery. Grounded in deontological ethical theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry was to explore funding strategies nonprofit leaders use to expand and sustain programs and services. The participants were eight nonprofit leaders from the West Coast of the United States with 10+ years of leadership experience. Data were collected using semistructured interviews and peer-reviewed journals. Through thematic analysis, five themes were identified: (a) research and data …

Reducing Complexity In Versatile Video Coding Intra-Coding Through Machine Learning-Based Optimization Of Partitioning And Prediction, Amina Kessentini, Amna Maraoui, Imen Werda, Fatma Ezahra Sayadi

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The escalating demand for high-resolution multimedia content has necessitated more efficient video compression solutions. The Versatile Video Coding (VVC) standard, despite achieving remarkable compression gains, introduces significant computational complexity, primarily due to its exhaustive Rate-Distortion Optimization (RDO) process. To address this, we propose an intelligent approach leveraging supervised machine learning techniques to streamline the VVC encoding process. Specifically, we introduce a Lightweight Neural Network (LNN) for efficient coding unit partitioning decisions and a Decision Tree (DT) classifier for optimizing the intra prediction process. This dual-method framework, tailored for All Intra coding configuration, significantly reduces encoder complexity while maintaining compression performance …

Do We Think Globally? A New Journal, 75 Years In The Making, Nicholas David Bowman Mar 2026

Do We Think Globally? A New Journal, 75 Years In The Making, Nicholas David Bowman

Media Studies - All Scholarship

In an editorial ending their tenure as editor of Critical Studies in Media Communication, Steiner (2007) warned of the scourge of journal proliferation, invoking a concern that increasingly, these new journals mostly benefit individual careers and publishing house profits. Meanwhile the “just-planted crop [of manuscripts] is generally bringing diminishing returns to the field” (p. 384) because we are publishing far more than we can read, evaluate, integrate, and engage. Steiner is hardly alone in her critique. Others call out the invisible labor of editorial stewardship, showing for example how inefficient systems not only exploit scholars (Chalmers & Solomon, …

Political Mediatization In The Digital Era: The Case Of Walhi West Sumatera’S Environmental Advocacy, Muhammad Thaufan Arifuddin, Ernita Arif, Yuliandre Darwis, Rinaldi Rinaldi, Muhammad Al-Amin Dalmenda

JURNAL KOMUNIKASI INDONESIA

This article examines how political mediatization operates at the local level through environmental civil society activism in post-authoritarian Indonesia. Focusing on the West Sumatra chapter of the Indonesia Forum for Environment (WALHI) as a critical case, the study argues that media logic is not merely imposed by political elites or mainstream media, but is strategically appropriated by local civil society organizations to contest oligarchic power, shape public agendas, and sustain democratic engagement at the subnational level. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with environmental activists and youth organizers, and an analysis of …

Diagnostic Trends And Service Enhancements In Deaf Mental Health: A Longitudinal Analysis, Kent Schafer, Steve Hamerdinger, Frank Wu, Rie Sakai Bizmark, Charlene Crump

JADARA

A longitudinal study investigated mental health diagnostic trends and patterns among Deaf and Hearing individuals using a comprehensive dataset from Alabama Department of Mental Health spanning 2004-2024 (Deaf=4,547; Hearing=2,056,188). Chi-square analysis revealed significant proportional differences in diagnoses between the groups. Deaf individuals showed significantly higher proportions of psychotic (12.93% vs. 8.33% Hearing), mood (20.76% vs. 18.84% Hearing), and personality (0.58% vs. 0.43% Hearing) disorders. These findings suggest that increased access to specialized and competent mental health services for individuals who are Deaf, particularly following the increase of staffing patterns for the Office of Deaf Services in 2015,contributed to more accurate …
