Visual Metaphor In Games Of Chance: What You See Is What You Play, Stephen Andrade Apr 2013

Visual Metaphor In Games Of Chance: What You See Is What You Play, Stephen Andrade

Computer Graphics Department Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Visual images have been a key element in the development of wager-based games. The legacy of visual metaphor in gaming can be traced through paper ephemera such as playing cards and lottery tickets. Both paper and printing technology ushered the age of wide spread playing opportunities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern play behaviors have given way to Postmodern gaming norms in digital space. The digital age has presented a new set of challenges for gaming architecture in wager-based play. Action research in prototyping games is beginning to reveal a new and different set of game characteristics.

The Use Of Visual-Based Simulated Environments In Teacher Preparation, Sharon Judge, Jonna Bobzien, Ann Maydosz, Sabra Gear, Petros Katsioloudis

Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications

While virtual technology for training in the simulation field has a long history in medicine, aviation, and the military, the application of similar emerging and innovative technologies in teacher preparation and education has been limited. TLE TeachLive™ (Teaching Learning Environment, Teaching in a Virtual Environment) [TLE] is an inventive mixed-reality environment (the blending of real and synthetic content) where prospective teachers can interact with a group of virtual students. The purpose of the virtual teaching environment of TLE is to strengthen teacher recruitment, preparation, and retention in education by allowing teachers to improve their skills with virtual students, providing a …

Do You See The Signs? Evaluating Language, Branding, And Design In A Library Signage Audit, Amy F. Stempler, Mark Aaron Polger Apr 2013

Do You See The Signs? Evaluating Language, Branding, And Design In A Library Signage Audit, Amy F. Stempler, Mark Aaron Polger

Publications and Research

Signage represents more than directions or policies; it is informational, promotional, and sets the tone of the environment. To be effective, signage must be consistent, concise, and free of jargon and punitive language. An efficient assessment of signage should include a complete inventory of existing signage, including an analysis of the types of signs, its location, language, and its design. This article outlines the steps involved in a comprehensive signage audit, which along with a literature review, provides the foundation for creating a signage policy, best practices guidelines, and a branding strategy for future signage.

Liminal Losers: Breakdowns And Breakthroughs In Reality Television's Biggest Hit, Caitlin Rickert Apr 2013

Liminal Losers: Breakdowns And Breakthroughs In Reality Television's Biggest Hit, Caitlin Rickert

Masters Theses

This study explores how The Biggest Loser, a popular television reality program that features a weight-loss competition, reflects and magnifies established stereotypes about obese individuals. The show, which encourages contestants to lose weight at a rapid pace, constructs a broken/fixed dichotomy that oversimplifies the complex issues of obesity and health.

My research is a semiotic analysis of the eleventh season of the program (2011), focusing on three pairs of contestants (or “couples” teams) that each represent a different level of commitment to the program’s values. Specifically, I focus on dramatic “breakdown” moments in which these contestants are disciplined by …

Boxes And Quilts? I Thought This Was College! Utilizing Pedagogical Tools To Access Students' Sociocultural Selves, Mari Ann Roberts, Marquita Jackson-Minot Apr 2013

Boxes And Quilts? I Thought This Was College! Utilizing Pedagogical Tools To Access Students' Sociocultural Selves, Mari Ann Roberts, Marquita Jackson-Minot

Georgia Educational Researcher

This reflection on practice discusses action research involving two pedagogical tools, identity boxes and culture quilts, which utilize the praxis of culturally responsive pedagogy. These tools were used to build classroom community and help students examine how their lives and education reflected “cultural themes of the society, personal themes, institutional themes, and social histories” (Creswell, 1998, p. 49). A qualitative examination of student response to the use of these tools indicated a strengthening of classroom community and the beginning of a transformative openness to, and critical examination of, cultural concepts based in what the authors term differentialities.

Why We Travel: Picturing Global Mobility In User-Generated Travel Journalism, Katie Day Good Apr 2013

Why We Travel: Picturing Global Mobility In User-Generated Travel Journalism, Katie Day Good

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Travel journalism provides unique insights into changing notions of culture, media, and mobility. This study examines ‘Why we travel,’ a New York Times collection of over 2000 reader-submitted photos and captions about travel. To locate trends within this multi-authored text, the author refers to the theories of tourism scholars MacCannell and Urry to distinguish between enduring and emergent travel representations. The former include unequal distributions of certain subject matter across regions, emphasis on ‘authentic’ touristic experiences, and visual methods for minimizing signs of western culture. Within the same collection, however, emergent representations feature ‘new’ tourisms, highly reflexive portraits of tourists, …

The Visual And The Law Of Cities, Stephen R. Miller Mar 2013

The Visual And The Law Of Cities, Stephen R. Miller

Pace Law Review

This article will attempt to explore, through four separate “tableaux,” or brief sketches, four ways in which the visual interplays with the law of cities, and how a deeper understanding of this intersection can assist in the development of these laws and their underlying policies. This discussion will by no means be definitive. However, by presenting these four approaches in which the visual complicates and assists the law of cities, and sometimes even acts as the law of cities, it is hoped the article will spur a dialogue on the law’s relationship to the visual.

Integrating New Literacies, Namely Visuals And Video, Into A Traditional, Basal-Text Driven Curriculum In A Secondary Classroom, Stephanie Moon Mar 2013

Integrating New Literacies, Namely Visuals And Video, Into A Traditional, Basal-Text Driven Curriculum In A Secondary Classroom, Stephanie Moon

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis was to create a curriculum for a secondary language arts classroom that took traditional lesson plans from an anthology and integrated visuals/videos into the lesson plans to increase rigor, relevance, and engagement in the classroom. Each unit starts with visuals/video then moves to texts and the anthology. This progression is designed to allow the students to move from a familiar place where they feel comfortable and confident, the visual/video, to a medium they are less comfortable and confident with, the text. Another goal of this curriculum is overwhelming engagement throughout each unit. Also, by building …

An Evaluation Of The Organizational Structure Of Air Force Emergency Operations Centers Using Social Network Analysis And Design Structure Matrices, John W. Marshall Mar 2013

An Evaluation Of The Organizational Structure Of Air Force Emergency Operations Centers Using Social Network Analysis And Design Structure Matrices, John W. Marshall

Theses and Dissertations

The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 demonstrated that the United States' emergency response capability, while robust, was disorganized in that organizations were not prepared or equipped to coordinate response actions across multiple agencies at a national level. This research investigates whether NIMS and the AFIMS structure is optimal for Air Force emergency managers, or whether, while maintaining NIMS compliance, there is a more effective way for the Air Force to organize its emergency management and response forces. Specifically this research focuses on the organization of the EOC and investigates whether shifting from the current structure of the ESFs to …

War's Visual Discourse: A Content Analysis Of Iraq War Imagery, Mary Elizabeth Major Mar 2013

War's Visual Discourse: A Content Analysis Of Iraq War Imagery, Mary Elizabeth Major

Dissertations and Theses

This study reports the findings of a systematic visual content analysis of 356 randomly sampled images published about the Iraq War in Time, Newsweek, and U.S. News and World Report from 2003-2009. In comparison to a 1995 Gulf War study, published images in all three newsmagazines continued to be U.S.-centric, with the highest content frequencies reflected in the categories U.S. troops on combat patrol, Iraqi civilians, and U.S. political leaders respectively. These content categories do not resemble the results of the Gulf War study in which armaments garnered the largest share of the images with 23%. This study concludes that …

Just Beautiful Portrays Of The Mind? The Relevance Of Aesthetic Strategies On Knowledge Creation In Neuroscience, Valerie Kummer Mar 2013

Just Beautiful Portrays Of The Mind? The Relevance Of Aesthetic Strategies On Knowledge Creation In Neuroscience, Valerie Kummer

The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal

We live in the age of big data. All types of data are being generated at an increasing rate but theories about the strategies and methods to visualize them is lagging. One of the main challenges we face today in research is to keep up with the massive amounts of data we produce (Allen, Elena A. et.al, 2012). Especially in the field of neuroscience and its use of imaging technologies, the vast array of data has risen to such a high number that it is impossible to grasp the inherent information without additional software tools and intelligent interfaces. Only through …

Sharing Your Scrap Paper: The Role Of Visual Communication In Mathematics Learning, Min Lu Mar 2013

Sharing Your Scrap Paper: The Role Of Visual Communication In Mathematics Learning, Min Lu

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Pictures of students’ solutions for mathematics problems are a useful way to analyze students’ learning process for researchers. Similarly, this paper used such pictures for students themselves to analyze each other’s thinking process as a heuristic teaching method. A project called “Sharing Your Scrap Paper” was conducted for students to take pictures of their homework scrap paper with their cell-phone, and share these pictures in a piece of online chat cell-phone software. The role of such kind of visual communication was examined in three high school Advanced Placement (AP) statistics classes for learning permutation and combination. 80 students were randomly …
