Information In Formation: Cognition Inspired Objects And Furniture, Katherine Marsh Jun 2013

Information In Formation: Cognition Inspired Objects And Furniture, Katherine Marsh

Theses

For this thesis, I intend to identify subject matters that reflect my interpretation of modern, relevant accounts about the world. Through research into the chosen subjects, I will gather related data and observations. This information will be processed to formulate relationships and narrative. Such graphic displays of information for these stories will be my inspiration. My interpretations will be further realized visually through my design process. Archetypes of the proposed furniture or object will be chosen based on the potential relationship between them and the chosen narrative topic. Visual abstractions and patterns will emerge from inspiration derived from the topographical …

3 Contiguous Experiments On A Design Historical Case, Pia Pedersen Jun 2013

3 Contiguous Experiments On A Design Historical Case, Pia Pedersen

Nordes Conference Series

This paper contributes to the field of practicebased research and includes insights from research through design, both research perspectives that apply methods and processes from design practice as basis for knowledge generation. The objective of the paper is to introduce a design historical case and demonstrate that it can inform and produce relevant knowledge to practice-based research and research through design. It is the assumption that – by forming the basis for making an epistemic artefact – a design historical case can construct knowledge on how to transform statistics into visualisations. It is also the assumption that the combination of …

Enstasy: Immersive Drawing As A Design Process, Welby Ings Jun 2013

Enstasy: Immersive Drawing As A Design Process, Welby Ings

Nordes Conference Series

This paper considers the means by which the short film Munted (Ings 2011) was drawn into being. It discusses drawing and interior dwelling as enstasic methodological practices. In so doing, it suggests that such approaches to the design of filmic narratives might enable the designer to reach into ideation and outwards into the communicative appearance of the text.

Invisible Man: Literature And The Body In Design Practice, Tarryn Handcock Jun 2013

Invisible Man: Literature And The Body In Design Practice, Tarryn Handcock

Nordes Conference Series

As a culturally produced text, literature is seen as a lens with the potential to draw attention to the values, ideas, and beliefs that underlie a society. In this paper three key themes in H.G. Wells’ novel The Invisible Man (1897), are discussed: firstly, the ways that the body may be fashioned through dress and individual practices; secondly, how wearable artefacts may socialize bodies and symbolically communicate; and thirdly, how the fashioned body may challenge personal and cultural boundaries. Collectively, these issues draw attention to the relational network of body, culture, and dress. These relationships are highly relevant to design …

Lines & Models. Embodied Drawing Acts, Judith Marlen Dobler Jun 2013

Lines & Models. Embodied Drawing Acts, Judith Marlen Dobler

Nordes Conference Series

Lines & Models is a ongoing series of analogue, digital and hybrid drawing experiments. The project explores tacit approaches to sketching and drawing by experiments using the body as a drawing tool. In the research project, theory and practice are closely linked. The experiments serve as drawing artifacts and as material for reflections in design research. In this context, the project evolved into an investigation about the involvement of the body while drawing and sketching, and how the knowledge gained can be visualized.

How Experimenting With Networks And The Data They Generate Can Create Layered Semantic And Visual Communication Design?, Miglena Minkova, Maria Martin Carrasco Jun 2013

How Experimenting With Networks And The Data They Generate Can Create Layered Semantic And Visual Communication Design?, Miglena Minkova, Maria Martin Carrasco

Nordes Conference Series

This paper will look into whether experimenting with networked processes and input in the production of graphic design can challenge the formal relationships between everyone involved in the creative process, stimulate dynamic readings and interactions and make use of contemporary information chaos. Considering economy, social structure and modern technology, parallels will be drawn between theory and practical examples. This will help to better illustrate the mechanics and creative use of the network and the data it produces, while setting up a broader research context for design practitioners to reflect on.

Nordes Conference Series

Welcome to Nordes 2013 the 5th biannual Nordes conference; welcome to Malmö and Copenhagen! Since its establishment in 2005, the Nordic design research conference, Nordes, has established itself as perhaps the most impor- tant scholarly event in the field in the Nordic countries, and over the years, Nordes has attracted still more participants from the rest of the world. The ambition of the Nordes design research conference is to develop into an inter- national conference of the highest academic standards with close reference to design practice as well as to the more traditional research approaches to design; a conference which …

Experimental Sketching, Judith Marlen Dobler Jun 2013

Experimental Sketching, Judith Marlen Dobler

Nordes Conference Series

What impact does the act of sketching have on thought processes? How may knowledge through sketching be reflected and lead to new epistemic insights? The workshop addresses these theoretical and methodological questions on the basis of specific drawing experiments. During the workshop the experimental use of sketches as a reflective tool in thinking and design processes is introduced. Experimental sketching is a participatory investigation about how knowledge is gained by drawing and how this process can be methodically, theoretically and practically reflected.

Improving The Living Standard Of Community In Code Riverside Through Environmental Natural Resources Utilization, Listia Natadjaja, P. Benny Setyawan

Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議

Code River or Kali Code is one of the great rivers that divide the city of Yogyakarta. We found that the community in the Code riverside needs something that can improve their welfare significantly. We try to figure out something that combines some potential resources like fish conservation, waste-free area of Kali Code, unique architecture, and English speaking people. We come up with the suggestion of a Service-Learning (S-L) program to create a fishing river. The aim of this S-L program is to have a multidisciplinary and multicultural approach to improve the Kali Code community’s welfare through environmental natural resources …

Pedagogy For Teaching Design – With An Emphasis On Sustainable Design, Stephanie Carleklev, Marie Sterte Jun 2013

Pedagogy For Teaching Design – With An Emphasis On Sustainable Design, Stephanie Carleklev, Marie Sterte

Learn X Design Conference Series

Teaching sustainability is not solely a question of providing relevant information; it is foremost about training students to meet the challenges of tomorrow. In design this can mean to shift the focus from material, form and function towards systems, correlation and time – a process supported both by how we teach as well as what we teach. But pedagogy still seems to be treated like a poor cousin to the more important design knowledge. This made us curious about the correlation between pedagogy and teaching design for sustainable change. By applying a study of Eilam and Trop (2011) onto the …

Are Juvenile Domestic Pigs (Sus Scrofa Domestica) Sensitive To The Attentive States Of Humans? The Impact Of Impulsivity On Choice Behaviour, Christian Nawroth, Mirjam Ebersbach, Eberhard Von Borell Jun 2013

Are Juvenile Domestic Pigs (Sus Scrofa Domestica) Sensitive To The Attentive States Of Humans? The Impact Of Impulsivity On Choice Behaviour, Christian Nawroth, Mirjam Ebersbach, Eberhard Von Borell

Attention Collection

Previous studies have shown that apes, dogs and horses seem to be able to attribute attentive states to humans. Subjects chose successfully between two persons: one who was able to see the animal and one who was not. Using a similar paradigm, we tested a species that does not rely strongly on visual cues, the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica). Subjects could choose between two unfamiliar persons, with only one showing attention, in three different conditions (body, head away, body turned - head front). Subjects (n = 16) only showed a tendency towards …

The Roma And Wall Street/Ceos: Linguistic Construction Of Identity In U.S. And Canadian Crime Reports, Theresa Catalano

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Discriminatory practices against Roma (also known as Romanies) occur on a daily basis in many countries around the world through media discourse. This paper investigates the representation of Romanies in U.S. and Canadian online newspaper crime reports and compares this representation to Wall Street/CEOs in crime reports demonstrating how identity of both groups is constructed through a variety of linguistic and non-linguistic strategies. Drawing on Mayr and Machin’s (2012) critical linguistic analysis of the language of crime, this multimodal study incorporates a variety of tools such as Critical Discourse Analysis and Cognitive Linguistics in order to dig below the surface …

Aarp And The Politics Of The Obama Election: "Tough Times, Tough Choices", Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt Jun 2013

Aarp And The Politics Of The Obama Election: "Tough Times, Tough Choices", Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

The 2008 election and first two years of President Barack Obama’s administration was the context for an analysis of AARP news coverage. This research examined how news coverage was presented in the AARP Bulletin. During the health care debate, AARP often mentioned President Obama over congressional leaders. However, after passage of the law and subsequent election of a new congress, the Republican perspective offered a balance to the president’s agenda. The AARP Bulletin may be an agenda setter on controversial issues. This study explored themes, such as “tough times, tough choices,” which appeared to influence the coverage of political issues.

During the slalom race, a kayaker will travel from shore towards buoy #1 as it omits sound from the speaker. As the kayaker moves around …

Development Of Visual Philosophy Under Impact Of Philosophy Of Technology, Li Zhao, Shuyu Zhang Jun 2013

Development Of Visual Philosophy Under Impact Of Philosophy Of Technology, Li Zhao, Shuyu Zhang

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

Throughout history the development of technology has been affecting people’s lives. Any kind of technological innovation may give a qualitative leap in human society. The impact of technology has penetrated into the study of various disciplines. Philosophy is no exception. In 1877, Karp formally proposed the concept of“philosophy of technology.” Technology has been studied from the practical aspect of a tool to the level of philosophy. Although the concept of visual philosophy has not yet been formally proposed, the thinking of philosophical vision has already existed. This paper is to analyze the impact of philosophy of technology on the …

Dreams And Memories, Sarah Arditti Jun 2013

Dreams And Memories, Sarah Arditti

Theses

In this document I analyze my work, process, and the success or failure of each piece in a body of artwork completed for the Masters of Fine Arts in Fine Arts Studio at Rochester Institute of Technology. My artwork explores personal dreams and memories through experimentation with material, color, technique and form. The works, a combination of paintings and objects, are each connected to a dream or memory and convey a paradox between reality versus illusion, or a sense of detachment from the real world.

Visual Grammar: A Literature Review, Karen Brænne May 2013

Visual Grammar: A Literature Review, Karen Brænne

Learn X Design Conference Series

Based on a database query and a manual search of Nordic literature about visual grammar, this article provides an overview analysis of six Norwegian contributions. The question in mind during this analysis concerns how the current academic theory of visual grammar is presented, and in particular, its purpose, the way it is systematized, its degree of theoretical discussion and its view of knowledge. In different ways, these contributions have an art- and/or design educational purpose. From this overview analysis, three elected topics were discussed: The degree of systematic and schematic representation, the discussion of the origin and construction of visual …

Ecological Literacy In Design Education: A Foundation For Sustainable Design, Joanna Boehnert May 2013

Ecological Literacy In Design Education: A Foundation For Sustainable Design, Joanna Boehnert

Learn X Design Conference Series

Responsible design in an era of scarcity and risk associated with environmental problems must be ecologically informed. Ecological literacy is necessary in order to both understand the nature of environmental problems and to respond effectively by designing sustainable ways of living. Embedding ecological literacy into design education is happening at the most progressive institutions – and yet for many others, sustainability education is still virtually absent from the curriculum. Progress is slow despite the fact that natural scientists warn that risks will escalate if we do not take dramatic action. Ecological literacy is a severe challenge as it disrupts educational …

Parsing The Non-Finito: Systems, Thresholds And Imaginative Space In Representation, Daniel Kelly Iv May 2013

Parsing The Non-Finito: Systems, Thresholds And Imaginative Space In Representation, Daniel Kelly Iv

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Between the actualized built spaces that the artist moves around and through on a daily basis and the more abstract systems we invent to represent these structures sits the illusion of space and structure found in his drawings and paintings. Constant turnover within the built environment offers not only content, but rich analogy for his artistic practice. The artist’s endeavors in the studio in many ways echo the genesis, evolution and possibility he observes in the transitioning city around him. In the actual making of the work, he gleans from traditional methods of drawing and painting, from the architectural lexicon, …
