Coup D'Oeil, Stephanie Quarto May 2013

Coup D'Oeil, Stephanie Quarto

Theses

coup d'oeil translates as "stroke of eye;" it also means a sudden blink or glimpse. It was used as a military term referring to a general's ability to assess with a single glance the advantages and disadvantages of a battlefield. I have titled this thesis coup d'oeil because it addresses the general lack of strategy and analysis by viewers of popular images. Images are omnipresent; they guide and influence humanity. They are not inherently adversarial, but when they assault both our conscious and unconscious minds, they can be extremely influential and destructive. The images in this thesis are similarly made …

Ict, Ideation Pedagogy And Innovation Education: Setting A New Paradigm In Graphic Design Education, Edward Appiah, Johannes Cronjé

Learn X Design Conference Series

The introduction of ICT into graphic design education has also brought in some challenges as far as the pedagogy is concerned, as it requires relearning, training and upgrading. Whereas modern practices and education is flouted with ICT, the pedagogy of graphic design education, especially in the developing economies, which is an adaptation of the Bauhaus theory, is in variance with current practices in both the profession and in its education. As part of an going stuHAGENdy, we discusses the literature of current graphic design practices as a contribution to the adaptation of Innovation Education (IE) in a specific Virtual Reality …

Between The Map And The Territory: Taking The World Apart In The Age Of Un-Discovery, Carla Lacey Fisher Schwartz May 2013

Between The Map And The Territory: Taking The World Apart In The Age Of Un-Discovery, Carla Lacey Fisher Schwartz

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The map is demonstrative of a basic human impulse, the desire to understand our surroundings and our position within the world. Through the activity of mapmaking, we aspire to comprehend comprehensively, but the very nature of the map allows for only partial understanding. Despite this objective for total knowledge, the blank space of a map is a necessity; in order for a map to be useful it must leave some aspects out. This blank space, along with other blanks in visual representation, is an active silence, and holds meaning in its absence.

While the map attempts to represent a territory, …

Teaching And Evaluation Strategies For Drawing In Design Education: The Use Of Drawing Schemata As A Tool For The In-Class Development Of Drawing For Design, Nora Karina Aguilar, Jose Luis Hernandes Azpeitia May 2013

Teaching And Evaluation Strategies For Drawing In Design Education: The Use Of Drawing Schemata As A Tool For The In-Class Development Of Drawing For Design, Nora Karina Aguilar, Jose Luis Hernandes Azpeitia

Learn X Design Conference Series

Drawing education strategies have been centred in specific skill development models regarding observational accuracy, creativity or expression. New design curricula require effectively integrated proposals that develop these dimensions simultaneously and are focused in the development of professional competencies. Drawing is a fundamental medium to accomplish this task. This paper presents current results of a simple methodology being implemented at OUR INSTITUTION for the research, evaluation and development of drawing in our design students based on the concept of Schema (Kant,1787)(Piaget, 1927)(Andersen, 1977)(Eco, 1998). The fundamental hypothesis of this research is that drawing practice and learning is based in the binomial …

Where Feet Are As Light As Feathers (A World Of Things), Katie Zickefoose

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Where feet are as light as feathers (a world of things) is a combination of 2D work including painting, drawing, and prints, in conjunction with a written monograph that supports and gives insight into the work. Through a series of short stories, both fictional and nonfictional, fleeting thoughts, as well as research in critical theory and art history, I make connections between my art, my process, and my own earthly living.

Beneath The Frock And Beyond The Original Plumbing : A Visual Rhetorical Analysis Of Transgender Magazines, Dayna Arcurio

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

This thesis studies the rhetoric, visual rhetoric, and visual semiotic potential of the transgender and transsexual community by engaging with its signature rhetorical texts: its print and digital magazines. Designating the transgender/transsexual magazines, Original Plumbing and Frock Magazine as my primary texts for study, I provide three critical lenses through which to view the written and visual expression of the transgender community. The heart of this research seeks to understand how the transgender/transsexual community creates meaning by examining three aspects of its magazines: 1) the trans-rhetorical expression through articles and interviews; 2) each magazine’s aesthetic design through the lens of …

"Because I Like It? No, They Made Me Do It!!" Why Juveniles Engage In Sexting, Jennifer Ann Haegele

Theses

Developments in technology have changed the way we do everything; advanced our research capabilities, enhanced our communication abilities and speeds, even the way people commit crimes. It provides perpetrators with a new way to commit traditional crimes as well as new forms of crime. One of the many opportunities involved with increased communication devices is known as sexting. Adolescent sexting has received national and local attention due to possible long-term implications such as registering as a sex offender and even suicide. Sexting, which is considered an antisocial behavior among adolescents, has progressively become implicated in peer pressure as well. Peer …

Visual Branding In Graphic Design, Leslie E. Kirk May 2013

Visual Branding In Graphic Design, Leslie E. Kirk

Honors Theses

Brands are all around us - no matter where we go, no matter what we do. As consumers, we are bombarded by images of logos and advertising campaigns every day. However, we rarely think about the process by which brands enter our lives. Before any product is ever produced or sold, it must first be branded. Every idea, from initial sketches to patented logos, supports a branding strategy, or the decisions a production team has made about what will drive a consumer to choose their brand over that of their competitors.

One problem small companies face when trying to get …

Exploring Student Engagement And Collaborative Learning In A Community-Based Module In Fine Art, John Mcgarrigle

Irish Journal of Academic Practice

This article is based on masters research1 into student and civic engagement using a case study of an innovative Community Based Module in a Fine Art degree course (McGarrigle, 2009). 2 (Flyvbjerg, 2006) notes that contrary to some common misunderstandings around case study research, it is possible to use individual case study to test theory particularly in relation to falsification. The research presented here is based on student’s repsonses to Coates’ (2007) quantitative study of student engagement and attempts to test his engagement typology which identifies the terms passive, intense, independent or collaborative to apply to students’ approaches to online …

Learn Html: A Refreshingly Fun Way To Learn The Foundations Of Html, Brandon Capp

Theses

Learn HTML is an interactive website with the purpose of teaching foundations of HTML. The website was designed to appeal to a teenage audience, ages 15 - 19 years old.

The nature of the website diverges away from the typical text based approach utilized in similar applications by abandoning a dependency on the heavy use of text to communicate information. Learn HTML, instead, features a strong use of graphic elements, visual metaphors, and a heavy focus on interactivity, all of which offer the user a visual representation of information.

Through interaction with the provided graphic elements and visual metaphors, the …

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzes a database of 118 ceramic sherds that were excavated from the Late Intermediate Period site of Yanaorco, located in the Cajamarca region of the north highlands in present-day Peru, for vessel form, style, and imagery. Through the placement of these sherds within the context of inter-community feasting events that took place at Yanaorco, fineware ceramic vessels are interpreted as prestige items that were utilized by the elite to further differentiate themselves from other community citizens. By examining key examples of representational and non-representational imagery depicted on the sherds, an understanding of the social agency of the vessel …
