City Reflections: Design Collaborations For Cross-Cultural Learning, Kelly M. Murdoch-Kitt, Denielle Emans
Learn X Design Conference Series
Design educators must learn to develop and lead successful intercultural projects and exchanges for students entering into a globally connected and diverse profession. Teaching students to approach problems by using collaborative and interpersonal skills provides them with durable assets to better understand international audiences, colleagues, and perspectives. The proliferation and integration of first-hand cross-cultural experiences into design curricula can result in innovation and knowledge sharing, indicating synergistic properties in which the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This research explores how collaborations between geographically separate design students in San Francisco, California, USA and Dubai, UAE—mediated by virtual …

Juvenile Book Cover Illustration, Lisa Marie Brown, Robert Barrett
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The book market has long been the fine art gallery of illustrators. Portraits, landscapes, and characters set in beautiful historical and modern scenes are only a few of the genres that illustrators have explored through the medium of the book cover. Book illustration has a long visual history that has inspired readers for many generations. The flourishing tradition of children’s book illustration began with such artists as Howard Pyle and N.C.Wyeth whose timeless covers for classics, painted in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, are still printed today. This rich heritage gives illustrators a firm foundation from which to build …

Conversations With Inanimate Objects: A Mortuary Analysis Of Oakland-Fraternal Cemeteries In Little Rock, Arkansas., Jeff L. Wright
Theses and Dissertations
From 2012-2013 a mortuary analysis of Oakland-Fraternal cemeteries in Little Rock, Arkansas was conducted for this thesis. Evidence that this cemetery serves as a cultural database for the city of Little Rock and that resources like this should be preserved as Cultural Resource Management projects are presented in an interdisciplinary approach to mortuary analysis combining the disciplines of Anthropology and Rhetoric. Analysis of iconography found on grave markers was conducted employing Robert E. Horn's visual rhetoric theories and methodologies. Kenneth Burke's Dramatic Pentad was also employed as a tool for measuring the motivations behind the authorship of grave markers. Issues …

The main premise of this paper is to centralize the experiential mode as a fundamental to Design Research whether by practice–based or by practice-led knowledge. This paper will map the process of different ‘knowings’ of practice, how they manifest themselves into critical knowledge for Design. Through this researcher’s engagement with the experiential, came an understanding that could not otherwise have surfaced without the practice–based inquiry and methodologies. ‘Practice’ is a central imperative of Design, yet the nature of these activities we call ‘practices’ is never the less complex in its critical edification and defining how it contributes and shapes ‘culture …

Animals and fruiting plants are involved in a complex set of interactions, with animals relying on fruiting trees as food resources, and fruiting trees relying on animals for seed dispersal. This interdependence shapes fruit signals such as colour and odour, to increase fruit detectability, and animal sensory systems, such as colour vision and olfaction to facilitate food identification and selection. Despite the ecological and evolutionary importance of plant-animal interactions for shaping animal sensory adaptations and plant characteristics, the details of the relationship are poorly understood. Here we examine the role of fruit chromaticity, luminance and odour on seed dispersal by …

Creativity In The Subject Art And Crafts: The Weak Link Between Learning And Assessment, Eva Lutnæs
Creativity In The Subject Art And Crafts: The Weak Link Between Learning And Assessment, Eva Lutnæs
Learn X Design Conference Series
This paper explores the assessment of creativity in the Norwegian school subject Art and Crafts. Creativity, or its sibling, originality is frequently used as an assessment criterion in assignments given to pupils at the level of lower secondary education. Written assessment criteria contribute to the public face of the subject, revealing core values to pupils, parents, headmasters and politicians. I have studied the assessment repertoire of teachers when negotiating final grades and legitimising their assessment practice in interviews. The teachers struggle to find words to describe what makes pupils’ design creative or original. Creativity seems to be something that just happens …
The Effect Of Heart Failure Education On Reducing Readmissions, Mayola Lara Villarruel
The Effect Of Heart Failure Education On Reducing Readmissions, Mayola Lara Villarruel
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Management of heart failure is a significant financial challenge for the health care industry, costing approximately $33.2 billion annually. Common reasons for preventable heart failure readmissions include inadequate discharge education and lack of self-care and health management activities. Education at discharge is a vital component of improving heart failure outcomes. Following a review of the literature, high quality evidence supports that heart failure education should focus on medication adherence, sodium and fluid restriction, daily weights, activity tolerance, identification of deteriorating signs and symptoms of heart failure, and smoking cessation. The purpose of this EBP project was to reduce heart failure …

Estudy Of Ber Performance In Passive Optical Networks With Different Modulation Techniques, Ayoob Alateeq
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The amazing growth in the usage of the broadband services has motivated a number of the services' providers to find drastic solutions. The percentage of broadband subscribers has increased from 5.3% of the world population in 2007 to 8.5% of the population in 2011. The increase in the number of subcarriers and a high bandwidth requirement are two motivations to demonstrate the broadband service provision. As a promised demonstration of the broadband provision, professionals use optical fiber to account for the present and the future broadband demand.
Power consumption and bandwidth capacity, which the optical fiber has offered, are two …

Visual Literacy (Grade 9–12): Art Today — Course Description And Outline, Kelli P. Dornbos
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
Process is hugely contrasting among all artists around the world. Each artist has their own way of developing a way of thinking, seeing and making to reach their need to get something out (or in simpler terms, create art). In this middle school art class, students will explore the different mediums of art with strict guidelines of craft and technique but freedom in the subject of what they can create on their own. It is important for 6th grade students to cooperate with each other to solve problems and create an identity through their own art making process. Dewey explains …

The need for more engineers equipped with new skill sets is essential for ensuring our national security, climate sustainability, and maintaining our position as a global leader in innovation and as an economic world power. The design challenges engineers face increasingly require a human-centered, creative, practical, and systems-based approach to find the most elegant solutions; i.e. they require design thinkers. According to Tim Brown of IDEO, the characteristics that distinguish design thinkers include: 'empathy--they imagine the world from multiple perspectives, integrative thinking--they can analyze at a detailed and holistic level to develop novel solutions, optimism--they don't back down from challenging …
Design And Evaluation Of A Nonverbal Communication Platform Between Assistive Robots And Their Users, Anthony Threatt
Design And Evaluation Of A Nonverbal Communication Platform Between Assistive Robots And Their Users, Anthony Threatt
All Dissertations
Assistive robotics will become integral to the everyday lives of a human population that is increasingly mobile, older, urban-centric and networked. The overwhelming demands on healthcare delivery alone will compel the adoption of assistive robotics. How will we communicate with such robots, and how will they communicate with us? This research makes the case for a relatively 'artificial' mode of nonverbal human-robot communication that is non-disruptive, non-competitive, and non-invasive human-robot communication that we envision will be willingly invited into our private and working lives over time. This research proposes a non-verbal communication (NVC) platform be conveyed by familiar lights and …
Locative Expressions In Signed Languages: A Cross-Linguistic Comparison, Sarah E. Eberle
Locative Expressions In Signed Languages: A Cross-Linguistic Comparison, Sarah E. Eberle
Theses and Dissertations
The primary focus of this paper is to examine whether sign languages organize their locative expressions similarly to spoken languages. Paving the way in the study of spatial relations by focusing on the structuring of ON and IN locatives in spoken languages, Bowerman and colleagues (Bowerman 1980; Melissa Bowerman & Eric Pederson 1992a; Bowerman 1993; 1994; 1996a; 1996b; Bowerman & Levinson 2001) found that spoken languages organize the locative phrases representing the relationships of ON and IN in a continuum which is called the ON-IN continuum.
This thesis shows that sign languages do not linguistically pattern similarly to spoken languages …

Diurnal And Nocturnal Avian Antipredator Behavior In Thermally Challenging Conditions, Jennie M. Carr
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Diurnal avian antipredator behavior has been the focus of much past research, yet the influence of the thermal environment on such behaviors is often overlooked. Far less is known about nocturnal avian antipredator behavior, including how these behaviors are influenced by challenging thermal environments. The first portion of my research focused on how the thermal environment influences the diurnal antipredator behavior of wintering birds while (i) exposed to high wind speeds, (ii) foraging in sunlit and shaded microhabitats, and (iii) when using thermoregulatory postures to conserve body heat. In addition to increasing convective heat loss, high wind speeds increase the …
