Untangling Neoliberalism’S Gordian Knot: Cancer Prevention And Control Services For Rural Appalachian Populations, George F. Bills Jan 2013

Untangling Neoliberalism’S Gordian Knot: Cancer Prevention And Control Services For Rural Appalachian Populations, George F. Bills

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

In eastern Kentucky, as in much of central Appalachia, current local storylines narrate the frictions and contradictions involved in the structural transition from a post-WWII Fordist industrial economy and a Keynesian welfare state to a Post-Fordist service economy and Neoliberal hollow state, starving for energy to sustain consumer indulgence (Jessop, 1993; Harvey, 2003; 2005). Neoliberalism is the ideological force redefining the “societal infrastructure of language” that legitimates this transition, in part by redefining the key terms of democracy and citizenship, as well as valorizing the market, the individual, and technocratic innovation (Chouliaraki & Fairclough, 1999; Harvey, 2005). This project develops …

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of natural treatment systems is the re-establishment of disturbed ecosystems and their sustainability for benefits to human and nature. The working of natural treatment systems on ecological principles and their sustainability in terms of low cost, low energy consumption, and low mechanical technology is highly desirable. The current review presents pros and cons of the natural treatment systems, their performance, and recent developments to use them in the treatment of various types of wastewaters. Fast population growth and economic pressure in some developing countries compel the implementation of principles of natural treatment to protect natural environment. The employment …

Exploring The Health Of Women Who Experienced Homelessness During Adolescence, Claire M. Creamer

Open Access Dissertations

Homelessness remains a significant global issue with substantial health consequences related to the experiences of homelessness. The consequences for people who experience homelessness are typically associated with high levels of risk, violence, and negative health outcomes. Developmental levels and gender contribute significantly to outcomes. As a developmental stage, adolescence is a time of establishing healthy practices for adulthood. Adolescent experiences with homelessness have negative consequences for future health as well as some economic status. Homeless youth have been identified as a medically underserved and vulnerable population.

A significant body of literature has explored the outcomes of mental health, sexual practices, …

Saving Prince Peach: A Study Of “Gaymers” And Digital Lgbt/Gaming Rhetorics, M. William Macknight

Open Access Dissertations

This study looks at the tensions surrounding the inclusion and increasing presence of LGBT performances within video games, their surrounding industry and culture, and their related internetworked cyberspaces – an assemblage referred to in this research as the “game-sphere.” By analyzing the rhetorical activity performed within a specific LGBT game cyberspace (the Reddit subforum r/gaymers), this study offers insight into gaming and LGBT culture by answering the following research question: What rhetorical action is performed by LGBT video game players within r/gaymers? Data were collected over a period of two weeks, wherein screen-captures were taken and saved twice a …

Multicultural Training Of Clinical And Counseling Psychology Doctoral Students: Ideals Vs. Practice, Bryana F. C. White

Open Access Dissertations

The American Psychological Association (APA), which is the advocating body for the field of psychology, emphasizes the importance of multicultural competencies for researchers and clinicians (APA, 2003; 2010). Graduate students are the field’s future professionals. The multicultural training of doctoral level clinical and counseling psychology graduate students is integral to efforts to improve clinical services and the research that provides the foundation for those services. While the literature addresses issues of multicultural competence and training in a general way, few specifics regarding the methods employed by graduate programs to aid their students in the process of developing those competencies are …

A Response To Harel, Hope, And Schwartz, John M. Finnis Jan 2013

A Response To Harel, Hope, And Schwartz, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

A seminar held in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in December 2012 discussed critical comments by Alon Harel, Simon Hope, and Daniel Schwartz on themes and theses in Human Rights and Common Good, volume III of Collected Essays of John Finnis (Oxford University Press, 2011). Revised versions of these comments, and of the response I gave at this seminar, are now published in the Jerusalem Review of Legal Studies. The Response retains the informal and engaged character of this very good academic occasion. Section I considers Harel’s thesis that judicial review of legislation can be defended because my “in-authenticity” …

Barriers To Group Therapy For Latino College Students In The United States, Michelle C. Stoyell Jan 2013

Barriers To Group Therapy For Latino College Students In The United States, Michelle C. Stoyell

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

While group therapy appears to be gaining popularity at University Counseling Centers, scant research has been done on Latino students' group therapy participation. The present study examined the barriers that Latino college students face in considering whether to join group therapy. Participants (N=81) completed three measures. The first measure was a demographic questionnaire. The second measure was a modified version of the Barriers Scale, originally developed by Harris (2012), a 44-item survey in which participants were assessed in terms of: their willingness to consider group therapy, group therapy modality preferences, expectations of group therapy, expectations of group members, expectations of …

The Student Perspective: An Exploration Of The Experiences And Needs Of University Students With Mental Illness, Hannah Lee Gammon Jan 2013

The Student Perspective: An Exploration Of The Experiences And Needs Of University Students With Mental Illness, Hannah Lee Gammon

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

There is a gap in the current literature concerning the study of university students with mental illness. Particularly, very few qualitative studies have been conducted in which interviews with university students with mental illness have yielded knowledge about the population's experiences and needs. The present study, employing a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, was designed to promote a more accurate perception of the lives of university students with mental illness by allowing the voices of members of this group to be heard. Eight matriculating university students who self-identified with mental illness participated in this exploratory PAR initiative. The study involved …

Batwoman And Catwoman: Treatment Of Women In Dc Comics, Kristen Coppess Race Jan 2013

Batwoman And Catwoman: Treatment Of Women In Dc Comics, Kristen Coppess Race

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

DC Comics has existed through the first, second, and third waves of feminism, publishing popular female characters who appeal to a mass market. By focusing on depictions of Batwoman and Catwoman, this paper examines the contrast between the social and political progress forms of feminism promised for women and the increasingly violent treatment of female characters in DC Comics, focusing on Batwoman and Catwoman. M. Thomas Inge maintains that male "comic book heroes [...] tend to fit most of the classic patterns of heroism in Western culture" (142). These heroes are designated by their completion of quests or missions, their …

Sexual Orientation Of Fatherhood, Dara Purvis Jan 2013

Sexual Orientation Of Fatherhood, Dara Purvis

Faculty Scholarship

In this Article, I examine how same-sex fathers affect the perception of heterosexual caretaking fathers - and by extension, could affect the perception of heterosexual non-caretaking mothers. I conclude that gay stay-at-home fathers offer a provocative opportunity to broaden societal views of men and caregiving more generally, and argue that greater recognition of parents who counteract gender stereotypes - even where the recognition might arguably lessen women's rights in family law - ultimately helps women as well as children and nontraditional parents. Part I discusses fathers, particularly stay-at-home fathers, the practical problems fathers face combining work and caregiving responsibilities, and …

The Function Of A Middle Woodland Site In The Central Illinois Valley: A Ceramic Study Of Ogden-Fettie, Montana L. Martin Jan 2013

The Function Of A Middle Woodland Site In The Central Illinois Valley: A Ceramic Study Of Ogden-Fettie, Montana L. Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Ogden-Fettie is a Middle Woodland Havana-Hopewell mound group in the Central Illinois Valley. Fv196 is the midden area near the largest mound. The function of Fv196 was in question, because it does not conform to the settlement and function models that have been applied to other sites. The ceramic collection from Fv196 was typed and categorized into categories based on perceived function, either habitation or ceremonial. The majority of the pottery belonged to the Havana series, which is traditionally considered habitation pottery; however, many of the Havana sherds were decorated indicating a ceremonial function. The highly decorated pots showed the …

Portland, Oregon's Long Hot Summers: Racial Unrest And Public Response, 1967-1969, Joshua Joe Bryan Jan 2013

Portland, Oregon's Long Hot Summers: Racial Unrest And Public Response, 1967-1969, Joshua Joe Bryan

Dissertations and Theses

The struggles for racial equality throughout northern cities during the late-1960s, while not nearly as prevalent within historical scholarship as those pertaining to the Deep South, have left an indelible mark on both the individuals and communities involved. Historians have until recently thought of the civil rights movement in the north as a violent betrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s vision of an inclusive and integrated society, as well as coinciding with the rise, and subsequent decline, of Black Power. But despite such suppositions, the experiences of northern cities immersed in the civil rights struggle were far more varied …

“It’S All About That Piece Of Paper”: Vocational Anticipatory Socialization Messages Received By First Generation College Students, Hailey Anne Adkisson Jan 2013

“It’S All About That Piece Of Paper”: Vocational Anticipatory Socialization Messages Received By First Generation College Students, Hailey Anne Adkisson

Communication

The number of first-generation college students (FGCSs) attending four-year colleges/universities is on the rise. While numerous studies have examined descriptive characteristics of this growing population, few studies have examined why FGCSs choose to attend college. This study sought to tackle this question by conducting focus groups with thirty-five FGCSs. Participants were asked to identify sources of vocational anticipatory socialization (VAS) that were influential in their decision to pursue a college degree as well as the VAS messages they received from these sources. Focus group data revealed seven sources of VAS with parents being the number one source of VAS messages …

Tonight It’S Government Funded: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Manufactured Social Controversy And Government Funding Of The Arts, Kay Marie Beckermann Jan 2013

Tonight It’S Government Funded: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Manufactured Social Controversy And Government Funding Of The Arts, Kay Marie Beckermann

Communication

Thomas Goodnight’s definition of controversy offers an initial examination of Reverend Donald Wildmon and Reverend Pat Robertson’s attack of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), initiating the Culture Wars of 1989. Using their most reliable communication tactics, Wildmon and Robertson attempted to garner support for their values by manufacturing controversy related to government funding of the National Endowment for the Arts. Together, they manufacture social controversy around two inter-related themes, one of morality, in which they argued Christians were being persecuted by the art community, and the other against federal funding of objectionable art, using Andres Serrano and Robert …

Leaving The Family: Exit From Totalistic Organizations, Amorette Nicole Hinderaker Jan 2013

Leaving The Family: Exit From Totalistic Organizations, Amorette Nicole Hinderaker

Communication

The purpose of this study was to explore how members exit totalistic organizations. Existing organizational communication research has treated employee membership in an employment institution as the universal organizational relationship. This study argues that certain organizational relationships are best understood not by the presence or absence of pay, however, but in relation to the extent of organizational reach into the member's life outside the organization. This study advances the notion that such totalistic organizations share important characteristics including value-based memberships, centrality of organizational values to the member's life, the involvement of primary relationships, and a requirement of organizational fealty. This …

Supporting Transitions Of Homeless Youth: Evaluating Residential Program Frameworks, Structure And Educational Collaborations, Christopher Lowell Johnson Jan 2013

Supporting Transitions Of Homeless Youth: Evaluating Residential Program Frameworks, Structure And Educational Collaborations, Christopher Lowell Johnson

Education

With varying definitions and reports of appropriate transitions to independent living situations, it is difficult to decipher which residential models and approaches have the greatest impact on homeless youth. This project was guided by six research questions that focused on the residential structure and programming frameworks of programs serving runaway and homeless youth. Invited to participate in the study were 299 organizations operating 519 residential programs across the United States. Electronic surveys were sent to identified organizations and were followed by paper surveys. The researcher eventually received 71 completed surveys that were categorized as runaway minor and homeless youth programs. …

Sustainability And The Emergency Manager: Do They Mesh?, Regine Laurence Chauvet Jan 2013

Sustainability And The Emergency Manager: Do They Mesh?, Regine Laurence Chauvet

Emergency Management

There exists a lack of consensus around the definition of “sustainability” and numerous of applications of the concept in the disaster literature. Reviewing the disaster literature on sustainability, its intended audience, and the disciplines that inform it, a disconnect between the strategies proposed and the current role of county emergency managers in the U.S is evident. This study qualitatively explored how sustainability is conceptualized and perceived to be applicable at the local level by interviewing county emergency managers in the states of Florida and North Dakota. The study demonstrated that the lack of definitional clarity evidenced in the disaster literature …

Developing Higher Education Programs In Emergency Management: Ghana's Experience, Mariama Bisongu Yakubu

Emergency Management

Ghana is highly vulnerable and threatened by several hazards and has sought ways of minimizing impacts of hazards events over time including demonstrating an interest in developing an emergency management training and an higher education degree program. Yet, as of 2013, the country has not developed a disaster management training program or a degree program. This study investigated Ghana’s efforts to see these programs develop with a particular focus on identifying the factors involved in explaining the current status of Ghana’s efforts. Purposive and snowball sampling were used to select 19 emergency management scholars and practitioners who have been involved …

Tattoo Subculture: Creating A Personal Identity In The Context Of Social Stigma, Naomi Joy Tabassum Jan 2013

Tattoo Subculture: Creating A Personal Identity In The Context Of Social Stigma, Naomi Joy Tabassum

Education

Tattooing is a growing and diversifying practice in the United States (Roberts, 2012), yet mainstream society maintains negative stigmas (Bell, 1999). Nevertheless, individuals attach personal meaning to tattooing (Atkinson, 2002; Kosut, 2000). There is little literature on the tattooed individual’s experience of social stigmatization and its impact on identity construction. This study employed a phenomenological approach to address this gap in the literature. The researcher used a semi-structured protocol to interview seven tattooed individuals (five men, two women; age range 25 - 38 years). Data analysis extracted three main themes: “identity project,” “cultural context,” and “tattoo timeline.” Findings suggest stigmas …
