Comparative Stress Levels Among Residents In Three Chinese Provincial Capitals, 2001 And 2008, Tingzhong Yang, Dan Wu, Weifang Zhang, Randall R. Cottrell, Ian Rh Rockett
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Objectives
To compare stress levels among residents in large Chinese cities between 2001 and 2008.
Methods
Survey data were collected in three mainland Chinese capital cities in two waves, in 2001 and 2008, respectively. Participants were recruited through a multi-stage stratified sampling process. Stress was assessed using the Perceived Stress Scale, Chinese version (CPSS). Descriptive methods were used to estimate mean stress levels and associated 95% confidence intervals. Estimates were adjusted by post-stratification weights.
Results
Indicating stable stress levels, respective adjusted mean stress scores for the combined samples of study participants were 23.90 (95%CI: 23.68–24.12) in 2001 and 23.69 (95%CI: …

Interpersonal Discrimination And Depressive Symptomatology: Examination Of Several Personality-Related Characteristics As Potential Confounders In A Racial/Ethnic Heterogeneous Adult Sample, Haslyn E R Hunte, Katherine King, Margaret Hicken, Hedwig Lee, Tene T. Lewis
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
Research suggests that reports of interpersonal discrimination result in poor mental health. Because personality characteristics may either confound or mediate the link between these reports and mental health, there is a need to disentangle its role in order to better understand the nature of discrimination-mental health association. We examined whether hostility, anger repression and expression, pessimism, optimism, and self-esteem served as confounders in the association between perceived interpersonal discrimination and CESD-based depressive symptoms in a race/ethnic heterogeneous probability-based sample of community-dwelling adults.
Methods
We employed a series of ordinary least squares regression analyses to examine the potential confounding effect …

Today, inmates in county jails nationwide are billed for some or all of the costs of their room-and-board behind bars. Statutes authorizing counties to implement these “pay-to-stay” programs are on the books in roughly 70% of states, yet the financial mechanism on which these programs typically rely is not well understood. Although the pay-to-stay obligation bears some resemblance to familiar citizen-state financial transactions — such as fines and penalties, restitution, taxes, and fees — it in fact usually belongs to a distinct model that this Article calls the “government-imposed-loan.” This Article provides an overview of the landscape of pay-to-stay programs …
Assessment Of The Adoption Of Agroforestry Technologies By Limited-Resource Farmers In North Carolina, Bismark K. Owooh
Assessment Of The Adoption Of Agroforestry Technologies By Limited-Resource Farmers In North Carolina, Bismark K. Owooh
Theses
The study was conducted to assess the awareness regarding the adoption of agroforestry technologies of limited-resource farmers in North Carolina. Agroforestry technologies are part of the solutions to challenges that limited-resource farmers are faced with. The adoption of these technologies is critical if an impact on the livelihood of limited resource farmers will occur. A survey was used to collect data from the farmers. The study found that farmers lacked ample information on the benefits of agroforestry technologies. In regard to the barriers for adopting the technologies, most farmers reported there were no markets for products, expenses for additional resources, …
Small Groups As Context For Institutional Entrepreneurship: An Exploration Of The Emergence Of Commercial Microfinance In Bolivia, Silvia Dorado
Small Groups As Context For Institutional Entrepreneurship: An Exploration Of The Emergence Of Commercial Microfinance In Bolivia, Silvia Dorado
College of Business Faculty Publications
This paper contributes to the emerging literature on inhabited institutions. It argues that institutional entrepreneurship, as most social action, is not an individual-bounded endeavor, at the hands of isolated individuals, but a group-bounded one, at the hands of social individuals inhabiting groups which motivate, inspire, and enable their engagement. The inhabited group-bounded conceptualization offered helps to overcome voluntaristic biases and atemporalism plaguing much micro research on institutional entrepreneurship. The paper builds on a qualitative case study of the emergence of commercial microfinance in Bolivia.

Hong Kong Happiness Index 香港快樂指數調查
Results of Lingnan University’s Hong Kong Happiness Index Survey 2013 indicate a slight increase of Hong Kong people’s happiness index to 70.5, up from 70.3 last year on a scale of 0-100. Even though the uptick in the happiness index is insignificant, it is still unexpected in view of the social and political tensions in Hong Kong.
Satisfaction with the quality of public policy has fallen markedly from last year’s 4.77 to 4.14 on a scale of 0 to 10. Also declining noticeably is satisfaction with the living environment from 6.03 to 5.75. Overall, only healthcare generated a satisfaction score …

Social Versus Conservative Democracies And Homicide Rates, Marcus Marktanner, Luc Noiset
Faculty Articles
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to critique recent findings that democratic practices are positively related to homicide rates. Design/methodology/approach – Economic rational choice model supported by empirical evidence. Findings – It was found that higher homicide rates are only characteristic of democracies that fail to respond to the median voter's call for equitable social development. Originality/value – The paper makes an original distinction between conservative and social democracies, operationalizes this distinction theoretically and empirically, and shows that higher homicide rates are a phenomenon of conservative, not social, democracies.

Whose Sense Of Place? A Political Ecology Of Amenity Development, Patrick T. Hurley
Environment and Sustainability Faculty Publications
Using a political ecology framework, this chapter examines the ways in which sense of place and amenity migration contribute to alternative residential development, which relies on uneven use of conservation subdivision features in the American West. Using case studies from Central Oregon, this chapter demonstrates how senses of place and developer decision-making are tied to wider political economic changes. It highlights the roles that amenity migrants and developers, two groups that are sometimes identical, play in landscape transformations that simultaneously draw on a particular sense of place and commodify landscapes in new ways.

Despite the visibility of natural resource use and access for indigenous and rural peoples elsewhere, less attention is paid to the ways that development patterns interrupt nontimber forest products (NTFPs) and gathering practices by people living in urbanizing landscapes of the United States. Using a case study from Lowcountry South Carolina, we examine how urbanization has altered the political-ecological relationships that characterize gathering practices in greater Mt. Pleasant, a rapidly urbanizing area within the Charleston-North Charleston Metropolitan area. We draw on grounded visualization—an analytical method that integrates qualitative and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data—to examine the ways that residential and …

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications
Background and Purpose: Many physical therapy educational programs are adding international service-learning (ISL) opportunities to their curricula as a way to address the increasingly global nature of the profession. There is a paucity of physical therapy literature addressing ISL, with a particular deficiency related to ISL faculty. The purpose of this study was to describe faculty demographics, teaching styles, and educational perspectives, and to compare faculty who did and did not lead ISL experiences with physical therapy students.
Subjects: Two hundred five physical therapy faculty; 23% of whom led ISL.
Methods: Subjects were recruited through two professional listservs and data …

Ethnicity And Gender Comparisons Of Health Consequences In Adults With Alcohol Dependence, Karen G. Chartier, Michie N. Hesselbrock, Victor M. Hesselbrock
Social Work Publications
The moderating effects of ethnicity and gender on factors associated with physical health consequences in adults with alcohol dependence was examined using data from the 2001–2002 U.S. National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). Black and White respondents with a lifetime diagnosis of DSM-IV alcohol dependence were selected for the study (n = 3,852). A multiple-group structural equation model tested ethnicity, gender, and intervening variables as predictors of physical health status in alcohol dependent men and women. Study findings offer implications for clinical practice with alcohol dependent individuals by identifying likely target groups and problems for intervention.

Biomarker Research and Personalized Medicine Publications
Only a subset of patients will typically respond to any given prescribed drug. The time it takes clinicians to declare a treatment ineffective leaves the patient in an impaired state and at unnecessary risk for adverse drug effects. Thus, diagnostic tests robustly predicting the most effective and safe medication for each patient prior to starting pharmacotherapy would have tremendous clinical value. In this article, we evaluated the use of genetic markers to estimate ancestry as a predictive component of such diagnostic tests. We first estimated each patient’s unique mosaic of ancestral backgrounds using genome-wide SNP data collected in the Clinical …

The Yuma Territorial Prison Cemetery: Cold Cases Of Grave Importance, Michael Gillespie, Gary Foster
The Yuma Territorial Prison Cemetery: Cold Cases Of Grave Importance, Michael Gillespie, Gary Foster
Faculty Research and Creative Activity
Cemeteries, via grave markers and burial records, usually offer sufficiently scant data to enable a reconstruction of the communities they represent, but cemeteries of total institutions, here, the Yuma Territorial Prison, often yield even less data. With only the variables of ethnicity, sex, prisoner number, date of death, and cause of death, prison conditions were reconstructed for the 111 who died during the prison’s operation (1876-1909), and likely for the other 2,958 who were incarcerated there. First, prisoner number had a high, positive correlation with year of death, indicating that those who died in prison did not live long after …

n this article, we draw on the global production networks (GPNs) and global value chains perspectives to examine the regional development effects of economic upgrading in the Czech automotive industry between 1998 and 2008. We investigate how the position of Czech-based automotive firms in GPNs affects the intensity of upgrading and the amount of value captured for the benefit of the host regions through wages, corporate taxes revenues and reinvested profits. Based on the statistical analysis of firm-level data aggregated at the micro-regional level, the intensity of economic upgrading and value capture is measured for groups of regions and for …
