This article strongly reaffirms the author's support for the use of asylum as a way of providing justice for those fleeing persecution from other countries. Additionally, this article was written to help educate those interested in asylum law by providing some history and background on asylum. Part II of the article briefly discusses the history of asylum; enumerates the eligibility requirements for asylum; describes court proceedings in asylum cases; recounts recent statistics on grants of asylum; and also includes a brief history of our immigration courts. Enclave Under Siege: International Norms And Challenges To The Indian Nuclear Complex, Karthika Sasikumar Jan 2013

Enclave Under Siege: International Norms And Challenges To The Indian Nuclear Complex, Karthika Sasikumar

Faculty Publications

This article analyzes the effects of international connections on India’s nuclear program; specifically, the use of international norms and resources by domestic actors to influence the Indian nuclear enclave. These actors are from the Indian executive (pressure from above) as well as civil society (pressure from below). India’s self-presentation as a responsible state necessitates compliance with international norms, and concomitant restraints on the nuclear estate from ‘above.’ Environmentalists, local residents, and their transnational allies seek to make the nuclear complex more accountable, responsive, and transparent by using social media, civil society institutions, and cross-border links. The Indian case suggests that …

Crossing From Hearing To Deaf Worlds: Hearing Border Crossers As Participatory Designers In Healthcare Instruction, Yin Wah Brenda Kreher Jan 2013

Crossing From Hearing To Deaf Worlds: Hearing Border Crossers As Participatory Designers In Healthcare Instruction, Yin Wah Brenda Kreher

Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation - Dissertations

The Deaf population faces substantial communication barriers in accessing quality health care. Many healthcare professionals struggle to communicate with Deaf individuals because they have little awareness of how to interact with these patients in culturally sensitive ways. This study sought to understand the perspectives and experiences of hearing border-crossers -- hearing people who cross "borders," figuratively, to interact and communicate with Deaf people. Hearing border crossers hold useful knowledge that will shed light in facilitating communication between Deaf patients and hearing healthcare professionals. Using symbolic interactionism as the epistemological framework, qualitative interviews were conducted with three clusters of hearing border …

Peer Reviewers Of Academic Journals: Who Is Responsible For Our Professional Literature, Mary Francis

Research & Publications

Scholarly journals provide a record of the research, issues, and concerns of a field. Authors have their names associated with their individual articles, while editors are connected with a publication. However, there is another group of individuals who are often left out of the record, although their contributions are just as critical in the formation of scholarly journals. This article will take a look at this group of peer reviewers, to provide demographic data as well as understanding for the reasons individuals take on the duty of peer reviewer.

Incorporating Prediction Factor Into The Investigation Capability In The Social Force Model: Application On Avoiding Grouped Pedestrians, M. M. Shuaib, Osama Moh’D Alia, Zarita Zainuddin

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Incorporating decision making capability into a microscopic crowd dynamic model is an essential factor for introducing a well-representative model for the pedestrian flow. In normal situations, this capability was presented by providing the simulated independent pedestrians in the Social Force Model an investigation ability of their walkways. However, predicting semi-blocked situations by the simulated intelligent pedestrians has not been treated in their investigation. In this paper, the authors describe the investigation capability of independent pedestrians in normal situations. In addition, the prediction aspect is introduced for the simulated independent pedestrians as an extension for the investigation capability to let the …

In the context of a healthy communities initiative, this study looks at mobility in a disadvantaged area in a suburban area in north east Dublin. Proyecto Interconexiones: A Pilot Test Of A Community-Based Depression Care Program For Latina Violence Survivors, Christina Nicolaidis, Angie Mejia, Marlen Perez, Anabertha Alvarado, Rosemary Celaya-Alston, Yolanda Quintero, Raquel Aguillon

Chicano/Latino Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Background: Latina intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors often face great barriers to depression care. We sought to use a community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach to create and evaluate a community-based depression care program for Latina IPV survivors.

Methods: We created a multifaceted, culturally tailored intervention, based on principles of chronic illness management. A promotora provided case management services and led 12 weekly group sessions. Participants completed surveys at baseline and 6 months and participated in open-ended exit interviews.

Results: Ten Spanish-speaking Latina women participated in the intervention. The program had excellent attendance, with 100% of women attending …

Transnational Legal Discourse: Reflections On My Time With The German Law Journal, Peer Zumbansen

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper looks back at the first decade and a half of the German Law Journal, an online law review launched in 2000 and co-founded/co-edited by the author from 2000 until 2013. The refereed Journal, published monthly in English, began with case notes and essays on German, European and International high court decisions, and over time grew into a lively transnational forum for critical legal commentary. With a worldwide readership and authors ranging from law students to Supreme Court Justices, the Journal has long been both a launching pad for emerging scholars‘ writing careers and a vehicle for critical intervention …
