Becoming Lutheran: Exploring The Journey Of American Evangelicals Into Confessional Lutheran Thought, Matthew Richard
Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project
The purpose of this Major Applied Research Project was to examine the journey of American Evangelicals into Lutheran thought. Otherwise stated, the research project studied the emotional struggles, linguistic confusion, worldview changes, and epistemological shifts that happen during the pilgrimage between two theological traditions.
The research findings are intended to identify valuable insights and provide avenues of comfort for those who are making this transition. Furthermore, the findings of this research are intended to aid Lutheran pastors as they care for and shepherd individuals who are coming into Lutheranism from American Evangelicalism.
The primary components of this study were the …

Graduate Students’ Perception Of Standards And Accreditation In Higher Education In Turkey: A Qualitative Analysis, Ismail Yuksel
The Qualitative Report
My aim in this this study was to investigate graduate students’ perceptions about the concepts of standard and accreditation and their views on the problems of accreditation in Turkey. I conducted research on 26 graduate students in Eskisehir Osmangazi University, Turkey. I administered an open - ended questionnaire consisting of four questions to collect the data. To analyze the data I used content analysis technique. The internal consistency of the study was found 0.81. My initial findings showed that the participants associated the concept of quality especially with reliability, first - class, and expensive which are commonly used; associated the …
Surviving: One Family’S Experience With Cancer, Jennifer M. Denmon
Surviving: One Family’S Experience With Cancer, Jennifer M. Denmon
The Qualitative Report
People experience trauma in many ways. Discussing the trauma in the form of illness narratives can be beneficial, not only to the patient, but for their families as well (Hydén, 1997). Illness narratives are becoming more popular in the medical field, but mostly are written from the perspective of the patient and their spouse. Little is written from the perspective of the children. In this article, my immediate family and I write our narratives detailing the experience of my father’s cancer. Major themes that emerged from our stories are disbelief, unreliable memories, wanting to forge ahead, and a stronger family. …

Strategies For Data Gathering And Reporting Voices From The Field: A Review Of Applied Ethnography: Guidelines For Field Research, Loum S.L. Constantine
The Qualitative Report
The importance of applied research cannot be underestimated in this era of evidence - based implementation of intervention programs in health, community development, education, agriculture and other applied disciplines. Research reports of many qualitative studies have turned out short on quality due to poor data gathering techniques, analysis and write - up of findings. “Applied ethnography: guidelines for field research” is an authoritative narrative answering to this serious methodological flaws in applied research within ethnographic context. It presents rich and deep practical field experiences applicable in all qualitative research undertakings that demonstrate skills in planning field research ; from gaining …

Trends In Youth Victimization And Well-Being, And Implications For Youth Policy, Lisa M. Jones, David Finkelhor, Rashmi Nair, Michelle Collett
New England Journal of Public Policy
Youth victimization concerns have engaged educators, public health officials, and the media for many years. Cases of child victimization regularly make headlines, and in recent years public concern has focused in particular on sexual abuse, child abductions, online predators, school shootings, bullying, and cyberbullying. But little attention has been given to evidence for substantial declines in child victimizations over the past 20 years. Even for internet victimization, an area of high current public anxiety, trend data do not suggest a growing epidemic but instead find that some types of online victimization have declined over the past decade.

Global And Local Youth Unemployment: Dislocation And Pathways, Ramon Borges-Mendez, Lillian Denhardt, Michelle Collett
Global And Local Youth Unemployment: Dislocation And Pathways, Ramon Borges-Mendez, Lillian Denhardt, Michelle Collett
New England Journal of Public Policy
The impact of economic recessions is not felt uniformly across demographic groups, and the detrimental effects of the one-time dislocations can significantly shift the long-term prospects of human development for many years to come. The current recession has been hard on young people in the United States between the ages of 16 and 24, especially minorities (Latino or African American). Labor force participation rates have dropped dramatically and unemployment has reached as high as 30% in some states. Long spells of unemployment and adverse conditions for labor market incorporation further increase the likelihood of other poor life outcomes, such as …

Transracial Foster Care And Adoption: Issues And Realities, Fern L. Johnson, Stacie Mickelson, Mariana Lopez Davila
New England Journal of Public Policy
The article places transracial foster care and adoption into a broader perspective that highlights social and cultural factors and the reasons for controversy about this adoption option. The first section describes the demographics of children in the foster care system. This is followed by an overview of requirements for approval as foster and adoptive parents in Massachusetts and information about the laws governing transracial adoption. The controversy over transracial adoption is laid out by explaining the race-blind and race-matching positions. Policy priorities are outlined that take into account the main points of controversy. The final section focuses on growth in …

Innovation In Academic Libraries During A Time Of Crisis, Dane Michael Ward
Innovation In Academic Libraries During A Time Of Crisis, Dane Michael Ward
Theses and Dissertations
During a period of rapid social and technological change, academic Academic libraries and librarianship are experiencing a period of great change, or crisis, influenced by multiple factors including emerging technologies, declining budgets, and changing information. More than a transitory historical phase, these changes represents a fundamental transition between paradigms (Kuhn, 1962). Academic libraries and librarianship are moving from a paradigm focused on collections and books to a paradigm focused on learning. Within this context, innovations are new processes, services and products that facilitate this transition to the new paradigm.
Beyond this definitional work, the work serves as an exploration of …

"We Don't Have Any Of Those:" Looking For Leaders In The Horizontal Structure Of Occupy Portland, Aaron Martin Bach
"We Don't Have Any Of Those:" Looking For Leaders In The Horizontal Structure Of Occupy Portland, Aaron Martin Bach
Dissertations and Theses
This thesis documents and examines Occupy Portland's organizational structure and the impact of this structure on the leadership roles of participants. Interviews with key activists and participant observation reveal that the ideologically influenced horizontal organization employed by the movement disrupts the emergence of centralized authority and charismatic leadership. This, in turn, encourages the rise of a "distributed leadership" comprised of multiple, task driven leaders. It finds that these task-oriented leaders within Occupy Portland tend to fulfill three specific leadership roles; the facilitation of process, the construction of movement structures, and the organization of actions. This study provides an exploration of …
The Benefits And Responsibilities Of Discipline, Dr. Bruce Chadwick
The Benefits And Responsibilities Of Discipline, Dr. Bruce Chadwick
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Religious leaders and social scientists regard the family as the vital social entity of society. Deemed so, partly, because it has the ability to socialize children into competent adults. For the past several decades, the family has been undergoing vast changes, considerable decline in the eyes of some. The discipline and responsibility a child is raised under is crucial to their stability as adults.
Poverty Alleviation Strategies On The Indigenous In Mexico, Claire Sharp, Dr. Tim B. Heaton
Poverty Alleviation Strategies On The Indigenous In Mexico, Claire Sharp, Dr. Tim B. Heaton
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mexico’s national poverty initiatives are intended to provide assistance for those living in poverty. It is a development targeting concern that people who could most benefit from such poverty alleviation development programs are excluded, such as the indigenous populations and other minority groups. I will be assessing how indigenous populations are included in development initiatives of Mexico and providing a detailed case study of how these national development initiatives affect the Raramuri Indians of Chihuahua, Mexico. Determining the efficacy of development programs entails assessing whether the development projects address the local-level concerns of various groups in society, including the indigenous …
Home And Family Living Analysis: The Family Meal Environment, Leah Schreiner, Shirley Klein
Home And Family Living Analysis: The Family Meal Environment, Leah Schreiner, Shirley Klein
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Family scholar Kerry Daly (2003) explains the need to examine aspects of everyday family activities that he describes as negative spaces. Two of these areas are time and space. The time and the space in which families do their work contribute to, and is the essence of, a family living environment. Aird (2002) also argues for the importance of everyday activities in the home and calls upon mothers and fathers to “create, protect, and defend the physical, emotional, and spiritual spaces” for the development of children. This study reports the development of an initial Home and Family Living Analysis (HFL-A) …

Family Recreation In The Home: Home & Family Living Analysis, Rachel Loser, Dr. E. Jeffrey
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The recent development of the Home & Family Living Analysis (HFL-A) by myself, other students, and faculty of the School of Family Life at Brigham Young University initiated research on the affects of the “home” by administering a home-based scholarly inventory to make visible how the structure, technology, and design of the home and the activities of everyday family living interact and contribute to or detract from healthy family and spiritual relationships. As part of this project, useful aspects of family recreation in the home have been revealed. This project was funded by a $20,000 MEG grant as well as …
