Civic Sociology: Connecting Classroom To Community, Terry Porter
Civic Sociology: Connecting Classroom To Community, Terry Porter
Scholarship Forum 2013
In 2011, The United State Department of Education led a national dialogue about strengthening students’ civic learning and democratic engagement as a core component of college study. This resulted in the formation of the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement, who released their findings and recommendations in a study titled 'A Crucible Moment: College Learning and Democracy’s Future'. Many in the field of higher education are joining this call for higher education to become more engaged in its public purpose and renew its dedication to educating students to “embrace the duties of active citizenship and civic participation”. …

Publications and Research
Digital media is changing how scholars interact, collaborate, write and publish. This piece describes how to be a scholar now, when peer-reviewed articles can begin as Tweets and blog posts. In this new environment, scholars are able to create knowledge in ways that are more open, more fluid, and more easily read by wider audiences.

Mixed-Race Studies; Misstep Or The Next Step For Ethnic Studies In A Blending Nation?, Jennifer E. Robe
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
In January of 2011, the New York Times reported that 2010 U.S. Census data shows that younger generations are self-reporting their racial identity as multiracial or mixed-race in higher numbers than ever before¹. Classes in higher education that engage with race and ethnicity, often but not always as part of Ethnic Studies programs in universities, discuss and critique the categorizations of race and ethnicity. However, there is a social, political and economic power and privilege that groups have in being recognized as part of a categorized racial and/or ethnic group that mixedrace or multiracial identified individuals do not have when …

Beyond The Program Year: Graduates Students’ Understanding Of How Mcnair Scholars Program Participation Impacts Their Experiences In Graduate School, Cristina Restad
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program‘s goal is to introduce first-generation, low-income, underrepresented group college students to effective strategies for succeeding in graduate programs. One way to explore program effectiveness beyond graduate admission is to ask the McNair graduates themselves. This interview study explores McNair graduates understandings of issues they face in adjusting to graduate school and how McNair participation prepared them for addressing these issues. Typically McNair program evaluations emphasize the collection and analysis of quantitative data – e.g. academic performance and degree attainment; however, little qualitative research has been conducted on graduate‘s perceptions of the impact of program …

Income Disparity For Working Mothers: Eliminating Structural Discrimination Through Public Policy, Marques Lang
Income Disparity For Working Mothers: Eliminating Structural Discrimination Through Public Policy, Marques Lang
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Several studies have shown that in the United States mothers earn lower incomes than employees of similar qualifications and productivity levels. This phenomenon is known as the motherhood penalty. This paper analyzes the antecedents of the motherhood penalty as well as other factors that result in mothers earning lower wages than other women and men, particularly fathers. This begs the question: what role do institutions play in maintaining wage inequality through public policies, specifically maternity leave policy? In answering this question, both the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978 and the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 are examined to …

An Exploration Of The Effects Of Stigma On The Experiences Of Foster Care Alumni, Anais J. Penninck
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of stigma on foster care alumni. Participants were asked about their experiences in foster care related to stigma and how this may have affected their relationships and personal development. They were also prompted to share any other information the researcher may have missed. Six men were interviewed for this study between the ages of 19 and 37. The interviews provided rich information about how they interpreted the stigma and what short and long-term effects were results of this stigma. Additionally, the majority of participants who identified stigma described it …
Influential Factors Of Parental Substance And Alcohol Abuse On Children’S Academic Achievement, Andrea Winters
Influential Factors Of Parental Substance And Alcohol Abuse On Children’S Academic Achievement, Andrea Winters
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
There is much research to support the idea that parental involvement benefits a child's educational performance. There is also strong evidence demonstrating that parental substance or alcohol abuse increases a child's risk for behavioral problems that include drug and alcohol abuse, social-skill deficits, and low educational attainment. Very little current research has focused specifically on children of substance abusers who, against the odds, achieve academically. This study investigates the relationship between parental substance or alcohol abuse and children’s academic achievement. Data will be collected using a self-report survey from adult-children who self-identify as being a child of a past or …
Urbanism And North American Funerary Practices, Rebecca Marrall
Urbanism And North American Funerary Practices, Rebecca Marrall
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Urbanism is a way of life for those who reside in a densely inhabited area with a heterogeneous human population. The diversity of cultures, worldviews and practices found in urban areas combine in a form of cultural mixing. The urban amalgamation of cultures raises the question of how urban dwellers process their dead. Indeed, does urbanism influence regional death rituals and funerary practices? Other elements such as urban zoning laws, funerary technology or land scarcity add further dimensions to the original question. In short, do urban funerary practices and death rituals differ precisely because they are urban? My research examines …

The Representation Of Women In Comic Books, Post Wwii Through The Radical 60’S, Maryjane Dunne
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
The American comic book as long served as an alternative form of entertainment for a diverse demographic. Alongside jazz and Hollywood movies, the comic book is considered an indigenous American art form (Conroy). While the first comic book didn’t originate in America, the comic book superhero and comic books as they are known today are credited as originating in America. Comic books are not only a source of pleasure, but they also serve as a unique reflection of American culture. Comic book characters are usually depicted in visual and contextual extremes. These extremes are representations of how common stereotypes are …
Nativism Or Response To Globalization? Business Reaction To Immigration Reform, Tyanne Conner
Nativism Or Response To Globalization? Business Reaction To Immigration Reform, Tyanne Conner
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Industries such as agriculture, service, health care, construction, and meat packing and processing have relied heavily on immigrant labor and have voiced opposition to the restrictive immigration reform passed recently by the House of Representatives which would provide no amnesty, no path to legalization, and which would reduce the number of worker visas. Other industries and coalitions favor tighter border security and punitive action toward undocumented immigrants and those who hire them. I propose that the position these businesses take toward immigration reform is more a response to globalization than one of nativism.

Duality And The Importance Of Canadian Humour In A Complicated Kindness, Mandy L. Barberree
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
In A Complicated Kindness, Miriam Toews takes readers into the secluded fictional Mennonite community of East Village, located on the prairies of Manitoba, Canada. For many readers, a Mennonite community is something that is seen from the outside. What remains in view are mere surface features, a presented face to the world. In the case of Toew’s fictional town of East Village, this mask comes in the form of an antiquated, replica, tourist village that lies outside the town proper. The existence of this front turns the real and secluded East Village into “a town that exists in the world …

Community Learning Garden Programs In The Portland Area: How Do Learning Gardens Help Low‐Income Families Access Fresh Locally‐Grown Foods?, Denissia Elizabeth Withers
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
Community learning garden programs help families grow and prepare their own food. The skills and knowledge gained from these programs can help families access more fresh locally-grown foods. However, locally-grown foods are often perceived to be too expensive for low-income families. Economic barriers such as transportation and access to convenient food sources and the perceived high cost of fresh foods limit the amount of fresh foods available to low-income families and individuals. This study was designed to analyze how participation in community learning garden programs helps increase lowincome families access to organic and/or fresh locally-grown foods. Although the preliminary sample …

The Lents International Farmer’S Market: A Case And Comparative Study, Sarah Egan
PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal
The Lents neighborhood is a designated urban renewal area that has historically lacked access to ample grocery stores offering fresh produce. The Lents International Farmer’s Market enhances health and community by providing a community space to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. Examining the Lents International Farmer’s Market is an invaluable opportunity to learn more about consumer shopping behavior and market expectations. This study also seeks to identify vendor opportunities and barriers when establishing themselves as retailers at Lents International Farmer’s Market. From both a business and consumer perspective, it is crucial for the market’s survival to gain a sense what …

Systems Oriented Design: The Emergence And Development Of A Designerly Approach To Address Complexity, Birger Sevaldson
Systems Oriented Design: The Emergence And Development Of A Designerly Approach To Address Complexity, Birger Sevaldson
Learn X Design Conference Series
Designers are especially well suited to cope with the complexity of the real world because of three reasons: they are trained to synthesise solutions from complex and fuzzy material and they are good at visualising which is an enormous advantage for thinking in complexity. Finally they are creative people trained to come up with new solutions. There already exists design practices geared towards dealing with complexity. But such practices need to be systematized and developed further. One way of doing this is to develop its relation to other practices of complexity found in systems thinking and systems practices. This paper …
