Amount Of Knowledge About Sex Trafficking In The United States Among Valparaiso University Students, Taylor Fuller, Abigail Matter, Alyssa Kasper
Amount Of Knowledge About Sex Trafficking In The United States Among Valparaiso University Students, Taylor Fuller, Abigail Matter, Alyssa Kasper
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
This research proposal will address awareness among students, concentrating on males, at Valparaiso University. Little research has been conducted on awareness alone, let alone awareness of college students. Therefore, this research will be filling a gap. It’s important for low awareness levels to increase because awareness is the first step toward change. The researchers will develop an online survey to be administered to a sample of the students attending Valparaiso University to gauge their awareness. After the results are collected, they will be analyzed, and reported upon. Sex trafficking is a major problem for the United States. Finding out college …

It’S Time To Pick A Side: Why Remaining Neutral Towards Media Representations Of Women Isn’T Working, Jane Hurdish
It’S Time To Pick A Side: Why Remaining Neutral Towards Media Representations Of Women Isn’T Working, Jane Hurdish
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Media portrayals of women are often negative, and can have dire effects on female viewers, yet our society continues to allow these types of images. The American conception of free speech is what drives us to tolerate these images. In America, media representations are protected under the highly valued right to free speech. The general belief is that, in order to ensure the right to free speech for all, the law must remain neutral towards the content of speech, avoiding judgments on whether that content is good or bad. As a result, harmful representations of women remain in the public …
Awareness Of Contraceptive Availability At Valparaiso University, Katherine Cole, Charlotte Johnson, Megan Marimen
Awareness Of Contraceptive Availability At Valparaiso University, Katherine Cole, Charlotte Johnson, Megan Marimen
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Despite contradictory perspectives, college students are having sex. College-age students engage in high-risk sexual behavior despite their relatively higher rates of both sexually transmitted infections and unintended pregnancy compared to other age groups. Several studies suggest that the majority of college students rely on campus health clinics or condom distribution programs for obtaining contraceptives. Because of the prevalence in college students, this study was targeted toward full-time, sexually-active Valparaiso University students (aged 18-24). The researchers hypothesized that sexually-active students at Valparaiso University who were unaware of campus availability of contraceptives participated in unprotected sex more often than sexually-active students who …

Effects Of Electronic Communication On Face-To-Fare Communication, Bethany Garling, Colleen Bulow, Barb Larocco, Amy Wise
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
In the past 20 years, electronic communication fundamentally changed how people communicate. Though there has been much speculation about the effects of using this type of communication, little formal research has been done. This study expands upon previous research asking, “Does more frequent use of electronic communication correlate with a lower reported level of comfort in dealing with face-to-face confrontation?” For this study, the researchers created an electronic survey targeting individuals ages 18-25. The survey consisted of three sections: first, a brief demographic section; next, a frequency checklist measuring how often participants used various types of electronic communication; and finally, …
Diversity In The Media, Jane Hurdish, Emily Penn, Ashley Watson
Diversity In The Media, Jane Hurdish, Emily Penn, Ashley Watson
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Research has shown that a lack of diversity exists in the media, particularly regarding how two vulnerable populations, women and people of color, are portrayed. For example, usually only very thin women are portrayed, and people of color are misrepresented, perpetuating negative stereotypes. This study seeks to determine whether a sample of college students from Valparaiso University recognize the lack of diversity in the media and would like it changed. Through this study, society may become more aware of the lack of diversity in the media. This study may also encourage further research into how equal representation in the media …

Spirituality And Subjective Well-Being Among Southern Adventist University Students, Matthew Marlin
Spirituality And Subjective Well-Being Among Southern Adventist University Students, Matthew Marlin
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this study was to examine gender, ethnic, class standing, and parental marital status differences in spirituality and wellbeing among college students and to determine if spirituality and wellbeing are correlated. A sample of 63 participants from Southern Adventist University were administered the Marlin Spirituality and Psychological Well-being Inventory (MSPWI) which measures levels of spirituality and perceived well-being. No statistically significant differences were found for gender, ethnicity, class standing, or parental marital status. Spirituality and well-being were shown to have a significant positive correlation, with higher levels of well-being being associated with higher levels of spirituality.
"Mom, Why Did You Have To Choose Him?": Women's Experiences With An Lntergenerational Cycle Of Intimate Partner Violence In A Conservative Christian Denomination, Michael Hermann
Journal of Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research
The purpose of this paper is to provide a literature review about intimate partner violence and to present results from thirty-two qualitative interviews regarding women's experiences with an intergenerational cycle of abuse. The literature review presents a comprehensive summary of the literature of intimate partner violence. The review covers causes for IPV, types of gender asymmetry and symmetry, various effects on female survivors, an explanation for the cycle of abuse, possible effective interventions, limitations of existing studies, and it presents areas of research that still need to be studied.

Body Image And Disordered Eating Patterns In African-American College Women, Amazing Grace L. Danso
Body Image And Disordered Eating Patterns In African-American College Women, Amazing Grace L. Danso
Senior Honors Theses
Currently, increasing scholarly attention is being given to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and binge eating. A bulk of the research on the issue has focused on Caucasian women. As a result, the body of research may be limited in its generalization to other racial and ethnic groups. This study, therefore, sought to study disordered eating among African-American college women. Two models based on research questions were tested. The first focused on how body mass index (BMI) impacted disordered eating, while the second focused on how the difference between perceived actual and ideal body image impacted disordered eating. …
Evaluating A Cognitive Behavioral Group For Social Anxiety In A Real World Setting, Samantha Brin
Evaluating A Cognitive Behavioral Group For Social Anxiety In A Real World Setting, Samantha Brin
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fear of embarrassment. A common treatment for SAD is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which can be delivered individually or in group settings. For the following research paper, a CBT group was administered to 4 individuals diagnosed with SAD in a real-world setting. The group lasted 6 weeks and utilized CBT interventions including psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, and exposure simulations. Psychological Symptoms Scan (Psych-Scan), Social Phobia Inventory (SPIN), and Clinical Global Impression Scale (CGI) were utilized to measure the severity of clients’ anxiety and depression symptomology before and after treatment. The SPIN pre and posttest …

An Assessment Of Diversity Competence Among College Seniors: An Exploratory Study, Lung-Chiuan Chiang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
In our increasingly diverse global workforce, both employers and institutions of higher learning want to know if colleges and universities equip their students with adequate cultural competence skills. Reliable instruments to measure cultural competence levels for a general student body are not widely available, however. In this report, a self-developed 33-item instrument was designed to assess college seniors’ cultural competence levels, including sub-scales for cultural awareness and cultural knowledge. An expert panel was selected to establish content validity. A pilot study was conducted to improve the design of survey format. The Cronbach’s alpha was .770 according to the reliability test. …

Conversations In A Pub: Positioning The Critical Friend As “Peer Relief” In The Supervision Of A Teacher Educator Study Abroad Experience, Jenifer Jasinski Schneider, Audra K. Parker
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, we share the results of a self - study of our experience as university supervisors in a study abroad program for U.S. pre - service teachers. We share the shifts in our thinking that occurred as a result of our daily conversations about our work as teacher educators. Our reflections led us to new understandings of the nuances of field experiences, our constructions of pre - service teachers in the field, and the necessity of personal and professional renewal for faculty, not only as critical friends, but as peer relief.
