How Bgsu Students Define "Intimate Partner Violence" And "Intimate Partner Abuse", Kelsey L. Klein

Honors Projects

This study examines what behaviors undergraduate, heterosexual female Bowling Green State University students age 18-24 classify as “Intimate Partner Violence” and as “Intimate Partner Abuse.” This research begins to explore how this population defines these terms through looking at what types of behaviors are seen as violence and what types of behaviors are seen as abuse. Participants were randomly selected to take one of two online surveys. One survey asked participants to decide if listed behaviors were “Intimate Partner Violence” when committed by a male partner against a female partner. The other survey asked the same but replaced “Intimate Partner …

The Effects Of Relational Victimization On The Perceived Barriers, Career Decision-Making Self-Efficacy, And Career Aspirations Of Female Offenders, Brooke Green

Theses and Dissertations

We explored the relations among relational victimization and career-related variables in a sample of 174 non-violent female felony offenders residing in a community corrections residential facility. Archival data was used from a larger career-related reentry program that represented a joint effort between investigators at the VCU Department of Psychology and staff from the Virginia Department of Correctional Education. Data analyses focused on the association between (a) recent experiences of relational victimization and (b) career aspiration complexity code, (c) career aspirations towards or away from socially-oriented careers, (d) perceived occupational barriers, and (e) career decision-making self-efficacy. Hypothesized associations among this set …

Faith-Related Prejudice In Admission To Clinical Psychology Graduate School Programs, Elizabeth Hoose, Dr. Jeffrey Reber Apr 2013

Faith-Related Prejudice In Admission To Clinical Psychology Graduate School Programs, Elizabeth Hoose, Dr. Jeffrey Reber

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Little research has been done on prejudice against people of faith. Several studies indicate that fundamental or evangelical Christians face the effects of prejudice especially in educational settings (Ressler & Hodge, 2006). In particular, two surveys of Christian social workers inquiring about their professional experience in regards to their religion, found that the respondents felt ridiculed, degraded and demeaned by their colleagues because of their beliefs (Ressler & Hodge, 2006; Ressler & Hodge, 2003). Recently, researchers have begun to explore the potential implicit prejudices towards faith and people of faith in psychology (Slife & Reber, 2009). Likewise, it has also …

Exploring The Nature Of Space For Human Behavior In Ordinary Structured Environments, Molly Boeka Cannon Apr 2013

Exploring The Nature Of Space For Human Behavior In Ordinary Structured Environments, Molly Boeka Cannon

Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

What is the nature of the built environment? Built environments are the settings within which people carry out activities and emerge from the specific combining of spatial conditions with specific social content for the setting. The social content and the spatial conditions form a core-defining relationship that serves to distinguish one structured setting from another. A core-defining relationship such as this refers to the essence of the built environment. What are the implications for human behavior that emerge from conceptualizing built environments in this manner? I argue that space, through its essential relationship with the contexts of daily living (i.e. …

Avoidant Coping Behavior As A Mediator Of The Effects Of Various Forms Of Intimate Partner Abuse And Posttraumatic Stress Disorder In Women Who Are Survivors Of Intimate Partner Violence, Nathali Blackwell Ms.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study explored whether avoidant coping served a meditational role in the association between three forms of intimate partner abuse (sexual coercion, physical aggression, and psychological aggression) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among women who had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Eighty nine female IPV survivors were involved in the current study. Results indicated that in the case of sexual coercion and PTSD, avoidant coping was a mediator. Avoidant coping was not found to have a mediating effect between the remaining types of abuse (physical and psychological aggression) and PTSD. However, it was found that physical aggression had a relationship …

Shared Leadership In Dangerous Environments: Testing A Model For Military Teams Using Mixed Methods Research, Alex J. Ramthun Apr 2013

Shared Leadership In Dangerous Environments: Testing A Model For Military Teams Using Mixed Methods Research, Alex J. Ramthun

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

In a field study, the dissertation examined the influence of shared leadership on team performance for 51 military combat teams in a simulated dangerous environment. To simulate the dangerous context, the study employed amilitary tactical urban fighting complex, paintball weapons, role players, and a dynamic combat scenario. Using social network analysis techniques and after controlling for team diversity and combat experience, the study found the density measure of shared leadership to be positively and significantly related to team performance, accounting for 40% of the variance in team performance. This research also found both the centralization measure and density/centralization interaction effect …

Mental Health Service Utilization Among African American Emerging Adults, Sha-Lai Williams Apr 2013

Mental Health Service Utilization Among African American Emerging Adults, Sha-Lai Williams

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Mental illness affects 25-30% of US adults ages 18 years and older in a given year. Of those individuals, about 41% fail to utilize mental health services. Research indicates that being African American and between the ages of 18 and 29 are associated with decreased rates of service utilization. Yet, less is known about the factors related to mental health service utilization among a specific subset of these groups, namely, African American emerging adults. Using empirically-tested theoretical frameworks as its foundation, this dissertation study aimed to address this gap in literature by examining specific predisposing, enabling, and need factors: e.g., …

From Cornerstone To Capstone: Information Literacy Collaboration Across The Curriculum, Fiona Salisbury, Jenny Corbin, Tai Peseta

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Librarians and academics alike are passionate about how students engage with scholarly information. We want students to build on their existing information literacy skills when they commence university and to graduate with the information skills needed for lifelong learning in their chosen profession and society at large. Collaboration between librarians and academics to embed information literacy into curriculum design is a key strategy for developing students’ information skills. But what impact does our collaborative effort have on student learning outcomes and long-term information seeking behaviour? Are our graduates information literate and ready for a complex information society?

At Latrobe University …
