Flowing And Freestyling: Learning From Adult Students About Process Knowledge Transfer, Michelle Navarre Cleary
Flowing And Freestyling: Learning From Adult Students About Process Knowledge Transfer, Michelle Navarre Cleary
School of Continuing and Professional Studies Faculty and Staff Works
A study of twenty-five newly returned adult students finds that students with more process experience used more and more specific process analogies to construct their writing processes for school assignments than those with less process experience. Cues from peers and sense of academic identity also influenced transfer of process knowledge.

Volunteering Among Surviving Spouses: The Impact Of Volunteer Activity On The Health Of The Recently Widowed, Kimberly J. Johnson
Volunteering Among Surviving Spouses: The Impact Of Volunteer Activity On The Health Of The Recently Widowed, Kimberly J. Johnson
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Numerous studies link volunteering to positive mental and physical health for older adults, and recent studies have suggested that volunteering may be particularly beneficial for those who are widowed. This research examines the potential of volunteering to buffer participants from stress-related health declines associated with the death of a spouse.
Using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), this research investigates the moderating role of volunteering on the self-rated health and depressive symptoms of recently widowed older adults. Consecutive waves of the HRS are used to identify respondents who experience the death of a spouse or who remain married, and those …

Opting Out Among Women With Elite Education, Joni Hersch
Opting Out Among Women With Elite Education, Joni Hersch
Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications
Whether highly educated women are exiting the labor force to care for their children has generated a great deal of media attention, even though academic studies find little evidence of opting out. This paper shows that female graduates of elite institutions have lower labor market involvement than their counterparts from less selective institutions. Although elite graduates are more likely to earn advanced degrees, marry at later ages, and have higher expected earnings, there is little difference in labor market activity by college selectivity among women without children and women who are not married. But the presence of children is associated …

When Boys Hurt: A Pilot Study On Adolescent Males With Nonsuicidal Self-Injury, Danessa Mayo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The current literature on nonsuicidal self-injury among male adolescents is lacking in amount and level of understanding in comparison to females. The purpose of this study is to determine the gender differences in treatment outcomes for adolescents with nonsuicidal self-injury in a Dialectical Behavior Therapy outpatient program. A total of 65 adolescent males and females from ages 12-18 who successfully graduated from the program were available for this study. Results show that the overall group of male and female patients reported a significant improvement in their levels of distress from baseline to post-treatment. Quantitative analyses conducted between male and female …
Personal Problems Among Rural Youth And Their Relation To Psychosocial Well-Being, Tommy M. Phillips, Brandy A. Randall, Donna J. Peterson, Joe D. Wilmoth, Lloyd E. Pickering
Personal Problems Among Rural Youth And Their Relation To Psychosocial Well-Being, Tommy M. Phillips, Brandy A. Randall, Donna J. Peterson, Joe D. Wilmoth, Lloyd E. Pickering
Journal of Extension
To understand stressors experienced by rural adolescents and their relationship to psychosocial well-being, high school students completed the Personal Problems Checklist for Adolescents and three measures of well-being. The most frequently reported problems were in social/friendship and parental domains. The most commonly reported individual problem was "Not having any privacy." Analyses indicated significant associations between problems reported and well-being. As age increased, problems reported in parental, dating, and crisis domains decreased. Girls reported more problems than boys in the parental domain, as did participants in stepfamilies. Extension and 4-H programs may help ease the effects of stressors on rural youth.

Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
The city of Kelso has a rich history based in a strong community ethic, hard-working people, and an economy deeply rooted in the bounty of the natural environment. This economy has changed over the last several decades, however, and the difficult transition has left its mark on the community. South Kelso in particular- one of the four neighborhood quadrants- is battling its fourth generation of disinvestment and widespread poverty. To help the City revitalize South Kelso, the aim of the South Kelso Revitalization Plan is to give voice, strength, and direction to the concerns and priorities of the South Kelso …

Current Status Of Shodhgangotri: Repository Of Indian Research In Progress, Shantashree S. Sengupta
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Across the globe, new research projects are undertaken every year by the researchers. There should be some system which will maintain a database of ongoing research work in order to avoid duplication of research. Some universities and institutions in foreign countries maintain database of research in progress. In India, various universities and institutions like INFLIBNET, DELNET, NASSDOC, IISc, CSIR and University of Mysore etc. have their Electronic thesis and dissertation (ETD) repository providing open or login based access to full-text ETDs. But, none of these have any database of Research in Progress. Recently, INFLIBNET introduced ShodhGangotri, which has been built …

Educational Services For Tibetan Students With Disabilities In India: A Case Study, Britany Anne Barnes
Theses and Dissertations
This case study describes services for students with disabilities at Karuna Home in Bylakuppe, Karnataka, India. Karuna Home is a residential rehabilitation center for students with cognitive or physical disabilities whose parents are Tibetan refugees. The study triangulated data from interviews, observations, and school documents to describe educational policies and procedures, and cultural attitudes toward disability. Results show that the Karuna Home program is undergirded by Buddhist thought and theology regarding care and concern for those in difficult circumstances. The school serves students with a range of mild to severe disabilities and is fully staffed, but teachers and other service …

Measuring Empowerment: A Program Evaluation Of The Youth Organization Sal Y Luz In Medellin, Colombia, Ashley D. Fitzsimons
Measuring Empowerment: A Program Evaluation Of The Youth Organization Sal Y Luz In Medellin, Colombia, Ashley D. Fitzsimons
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
The concept of empowerment is critical to the development of youths' ability to recognize themselves as stakeholders in their community and as participants in civic engagement (Kohlfeldt, 2011; Langhout, 2010). However, programs or groups with goals to foster ideals of empowerment face myriad challenges, such as the social and environmental context of the youth, and the status that the youth maintain in their communities (Kohlfeldt, 2011; Langhout, 2010; Zimmerman, 2004). To measure empowerment, the current study draws observations from a focus-group affiliated with a youth-centered community group known as Sal y Luz located in a disadvantaged comuna of Medellin, Colombia. …

Diasporas, Development And Governance In The Global South, Abel Chikanda, Gareth Haysom
International Migration Research Centre
Diasporas are increasingly recognized as key development resources for low- and middle-income countries. Thus, governments in the Global South are turning to their own extra-national diasporic populations in order to boost economic development, build global trading and investment networks and increase their political leverage overseas. The main goals of the conference on Diasporas, Development and Governance in the Global South were to enhance international understanding of the role of diasporas in development, identify best practices for policy engagement of diasporas and facilitate Canadian diaspora engagement in development. The conference focused on three main areas:
- Critical examination of efforts by international …

Implications Of Child Abduction For Human Rights And Child Welfare Systems: A Constructivist Inquiry Of The Lived Experience Of Guatemalan Mothers Publically Reporting Child Abduction For Intercountry Adoption, Carmen Monico
Theses and Dissertations
The Hague Convention on the Protection of Children and Co-operation in Respect of Intercountry Adoption was agreed upon in 1993 at the Hague Conference on Private International Law to address growing allegations of abduction, sale, and trafficking of children around the world. The Hague Convention guides countries to attend to the “best interest of the child” in making decisions on intercountry adoptions, and to apply the “principle of subsidiarity,” which calls for the consideration of family and kinship placement and national adoption prior to the consideration of intercountry adoption. This dissertation research focused on the experience of Guatemalan mothers reporting …
