The Impact Of Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms On Maternal Parenting Behaviors, Le'ann L. Solmonson, Tiffany Stewart
The Impact Of Adult Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Symptoms On Maternal Parenting Behaviors, Le'ann L. Solmonson, Tiffany Stewart
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
The purpose of this qualitative research project is to examine the impact of maternal ADHD symptoms on managing the responsibilities related to parent-ing. The primary researcher conducted three interviews with mothers who exhibit ADHD symptoms in order to gain insight into their perceived difficulties related to the disorder. Analysis of the data indicates these mothers have diffi-culty completing tasks, are disorganized, and are easily overwhelmed with the responsibilities of parenting resulting in difficulty managing their own behavior and being consistent in disciplining their children. Due to these areas of defi-ciency, it is suggested the presence of maternal ADHD symptoms results …

Symptom Differences By Gender For Outpatient Clients As Measured By The Scl-90-R, Todd L. Grande, Mark D. Newmeyer, Elizabeth S. Adair
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
It has been well accepted that women demonstrate a significantly higher prev-alence for mood disorders than their male counterparts. This study included the administration of the Symptom-Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R) over the course of a one-month period to a sample (n = 243) of females (66%) and males (34%) receiving treatment from an outpatient community mental health clinic. Descriptive statistics, a MANOVA, and subsequent ANOVAs revealed that women scored higher on every sub-scale of the SCL-90-R, except the psychoticism sub-scale, however, only the difference on the somatization sub-scale was statistically significant. Implications of these results for mental health providers are explored.

Social Work Faculty Publications
Changes in personal network composition, support and structure over 12 months were examined in 377 women from residential (n=119) and intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment (n=258) through face-to-face interviews utilizing computer based data collection. Personal networks of women who entered residential treatment had more substance users, more people with whom they had used alcohol and/or drugs, and fewer people from treatment programs or self-help groups than personal networks of women who entered intensive outpatient treatment. By 12 months post treatment intake, network composition improved for women in residential treatment; however, concrete support was still lower and substance users still more …
Aging And Technology Perspectives Of Web-Based Chronic Disease Self-Management, Jennifer Marie Dickman Portz
Aging And Technology Perspectives Of Web-Based Chronic Disease Self-Management, Jennifer Marie Dickman Portz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many people suffer from chronic disease; however, older adults are at greatest risk of chronic conditions. Although social workers regularly engage with chronically ill older adults, they are not noticeably involved with the research and development of chronic disease management. As such, with recent movements toward health information technology, the efficacy of technology-based chronic disease management is not well established for older adults. Informed by theories of self-management, human development, and technology design, this research investigated lifespan differences of web-based chronic disease self-management. Using a sequential mixed methods design, a secondary data analysis of a diabetes specific web-based self-management intervention …

Disrupting Privilege: A High School Curriculum, Cassidy M. Higgins
Disrupting Privilege: A High School Curriculum, Cassidy M. Higgins
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Current privilege pedagogy scholarship demonstrates the importance of understanding privilege as an entryway into critical studies and everyday community engagement. Thus, this dissertation argues that privilege must be introduced into education earlier, such as high school. In order to demonstrate ethical possibilities of meeting the need for care, this project integrates social work and critical pedagogy scholarship that explores teaching privilege in the classroom, with culture and communication scholarship. This dissertation connects culture and communication, critical pedagogy, and performance to demonstrate an applied use of communication scholarship in two classroom settings to explore dialogues of privilege through a curriculum titled …
Using Balanced Learning Course Design To Reduce Resistance To Diversity Curricula, Misty L. Wall
Using Balanced Learning Course Design To Reduce Resistance To Diversity Curricula, Misty L. Wall
Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations
Diversity content is often met with covert and overt resistance in the classroom. Utilisation of a balanced learning model may address classroom resistance. Balanced learning models require ‘backwards’ course planning, equal attention to course content and class process, and a strategic use of cyclical course design to include introduction of new materiel, experience, followed by personal reflection. Using a balanced learning model moves classroom instruction beyond active learning strategies in the classroom, but can present unique challenges for instructors. While not without challenges, utilising a balanced learning model proves useful during course design and delivery of a graduate course on …

The Role Of Transcendence In A Holistic View Of Successful Aging : A Concept Analysis And Model Of Transcendence In Maturation And Aging., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Amanda Bockweg
The Role Of Transcendence In A Holistic View Of Successful Aging : A Concept Analysis And Model Of Transcendence In Maturation And Aging., Valerie Lander Mccarthy, Amanda Bockweg
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
BACKGROUND: Although successful aging is most often defined by the absence of disease and disability, older adults consistently report aging successfully even in the presence of chronic illness and functional limitations. A more holistic way of looking at old age suggests transcendence may be an important missing criterion for successful aging.
AIM: Transcendence, a late life developmental process, appears to have a profound effect within the spiritual domain, but is an abstract, complex and unfamiliar concept. A clear understanding of the meaning of transcendence is necessary to explore the concept’s usefulness as a potential basis for future interventions to increase …

Paratransit Business Strategies: A Bird’S-Eye View Of Matatus In Nairobi, Dorothy Mccormick, Winnie Mitullah, Preston Chitere, Risper Orero, Marilyn Ommeh
Journal of Public Transportation
Nairobi’s paratransit vehicles—called matatus—provide most of the City’s public transport. They are operated as private for-profit businesses with varying levels of investment, labor, and strategic thinking. The vehicles are subject to regulation but have little regard for laws, regulations, or the comfort of the traveling public. Interviews of informed observers—the “bird’s-eye view”—underscored the business character of matatu firms and revealed considerable variation in business structure, modes of operation, levels of organization, and attitudes towards regulation, and they highlighted ways that government and industry institutions affect matatu organization and operations. This study identified eight elements of matatu business strategy and a …
Co-Rumination Partially Mediates The Relationship Between Social Support And Emotional Exhaustion Among Graduate Students, Justin P. Boren
Co-Rumination Partially Mediates The Relationship Between Social Support And Emotional Exhaustion Among Graduate Students, Justin P. Boren
Communication
Graduate students regularly report high levels of stress and burnout. Many of those same students utilize social support networks, which can act as stress buffers. This study evaluated excessive negative talk about issues (co-rumination) and its effects on that social-support to burnout (emotional exhaustion) relationship and predicted that co-rumination would act as a suppressor variable. Graduate student volunteers (N = 213) reported their levels of social support, co-rumination, and emotional exhaustion. Data indicated that co-rumination did mediate the social support-to-emotional exhaustion relationship on two dimensions. This project purports that, while social support is important, the content of socially-supportive interactions may …

These include how the organization’s unique service model impacts clients across several objective and subjective dimensions of well-being. Secondary questions focus on how these impacts may translate into increases or decreases …
Challenges And Opportunities For Improving Mental Health Services In Rural Long-Term Care, Jean A. Talbot Phd, Andrew F. Coburn Phd
Challenges And Opportunities For Improving Mental Health Services In Rural Long-Term Care, Jean A. Talbot Phd, Andrew F. Coburn Phd
Long Term Services and Supports
Despite high levels of need, individuals in long-term care often fail to receive appropriate mental health services, especially in rural areas. In this report (and accompanying Research & Policy Brief), we consider challenges and opportunities for improving mental health treatment delivered to long-term care recipients in rural settings. As background, we note the prevalence of mental health problems in long-term care populations, describe deficiencies in the mental health care afforded to long-term care recipients, and identify barriers that hinder the remediation of these deficiencies in rural settings. We also outline a rationale for enhancing mental health services in long-term …
Cultural Consensus Model Of Depression Beliefs Among Afghan Refugees, Qais Alemi
Cultural Consensus Model Of Depression Beliefs Among Afghan Refugees, Qais Alemi
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study describes gender-specific beliefs about depression among Afghan refugees, a population shown to be highly distressed. A 73-item questionnaire covering causes, symptoms, and treatments of depression, developed through free-listing techniques and supplemented with items from existing scales, was administered to a non-random sample of 50 men and 43 women in San Diego County. Demographic information and data on baseline distress levels were also collected. The Cultural Consensus Model was used to estimate the culturally correct answer for each question, and to assess the proportion of shared beliefs within and between groups. Results from consensus analysis indicated a homogenous response …
Sexual Trauma, Attachment, And Dissociation In Eating Disorder Populations, Kelly Cauley Rivinius
Sexual Trauma, Attachment, And Dissociation In Eating Disorder Populations, Kelly Cauley Rivinius
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The current study examined the process by which attachment influences dissociation in the presence of sexual trauma history. Sixty-two female individuals completed measures of attachment, trauma, and dissociation as a part of the intake assessment process the first week of their admission to a partial hospitalization program for treatment of an eating disorder. These archival data (2006 – 2013) were hand scored and coded by the researcher to ensure consistency across measures. Multiple mediations in parallel and moderated mediations in parallel were run using Hayes’ (2012) bootstrapping PROCESS macros. Consistent with predictions derived from the literature, sexual trauma significantly predicted …
Family Resilience Model Of Behavioral Health For Low-Income Ethnic Minority Families, Sherria Donae Taylor
Family Resilience Model Of Behavioral Health For Low-Income Ethnic Minority Families, Sherria Donae Taylor
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Over the past decade, the concepts of relational and family resilience have emerged as topics of interest in family science. Individual, family, and community level determinants of family resilience have received increased amount of attention in family resilience research particularly among low-income minority families. Correlates of poverty among minority families that have been noted in the literature are that of substance abuse and lower levels of mental health. The primary aim of this study was to operationalize the concept of family resilience and develop an empirically-based model of family resilience. The secondary aim, as it relates to the epidemics of …

The Utilization Of Recovery Oriented Care (U-Roc) Clinical Supervisor Training Program And Evaluation, Nakisha Castillo
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The utilization of Recovery Oriented Care (U-ROC) training program was developed based on a needs assessment conducted on clinical supervisors. The goal of the program was to provide a training program that would further enhance the development and supervisor knowledge in the utilization of recovery oriented care’s (ROC) 10 principles in supervision. The training program addressed the needs of supervisors in the California Mental Health Service Act organizations that are using ROC in their supervision with supervisees. The program provided supervisors with information on the utilization of ROC principles in supervision. Supervisors typically follow various supervision models or therapeutic interventions. …
