Law Enforcement And The Mentally Ill: Thirty Years Of Police Literature, Jennifer Noe
Law Enforcement And The Mentally Ill: Thirty Years Of Police Literature, Jennifer Noe
Publications and Research
This study applies the methodology of content analysis to 30 years of law-enforcement literature to determine whether online access to scholarly research in social work and mental health made a difference in police policy toward the mentally ill. Keywords from the controlled vocabulary of these fields were found in the body of content analyzed prior to easily accessible online resources in 1997 , yet the number of articles on the subject grew from approximately one per year prior to 1998 to nearly five per year by 2011. The imprint of these two fields from outside of law enforcement was discernible …
Storm System: Wearable Shelter For The Alpha Time Era, Miguel Rios
Storm System: Wearable Shelter For The Alpha Time Era, Miguel Rios
Nordes Conference Series
In this environmentally and demographically complex start to a post-industrial millennium, it is urgent to reflect on the transformations that occur from the interaction between individuals, the city they inhabit, its surroundings and protection conditions. STORM SYSTEM, developed by Miguel Rios Design, responds to the question of a first individual nomad clothing protection against weather adversities. Today’s population growth forces a reorganisation of space, in a variety of contexts that individuals face on large urban surfaces, as well as an interiorisation of the impacts resulting from behavioural changes. An unbearable logistic and environmental excess is therefore propagated (and vice versa), …

Another Future For Designers In America, Kate Catterall
Another Future For Designers In America, Kate Catterall
Learn X Design Conference Series
The rationale behind mass-industrialization, now normalized, is embodied uncritically in the practice of many new designers. What if the industrial past could be explored and experienced as a foreign territory, providing a vantage point from which to critically evaluate contemporary design practices and define new paths? Young American designers are searching for alternate roles, and ways to design and live. Many experiment with models from elsewhere, places where new futures are growing from useful pre-industrial remnants. America, a country synonymous with industrialization, has no such resources upon which to build new practices, and slowing while creating value through quality is …
A Longitudinal Examination Of Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Drug Use And Unsafe Sex Among Young African American Females, Dexter R. Voisin
A Longitudinal Examination Of Risk And Protective Factors Associated With Drug Use And Unsafe Sex Among Young African American Females, Dexter R. Voisin
Faculty Scholarship
This study prospectively examined associations among multiple theoretically informed risk (e.g., depression, sexual sensation seeking, and risky peers norms) and protective factors (e.g., social support, STI knowledge, and refusal to have sex self efficacy) on unsafe sex among 715 African American adolescent females aged 15-21 who participated in an STI/HIV prevention intervention. Generalized estimating equation models were used to assess associations between baseline characteristics and sexual risk over a 12-month follow-up period. Overall risk in this population was high: at baseline, nearly a third of women reported sex under the influence of alcohol or substances; ≥ 2 partners for vaginal …

Community Partnership In Service-Learning : The St. Paul University Philippines’ Experience, Allan Peejay Lappay
Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議
Partnership is a key to an effective service-learning (SL). It develops competencies that promote the advancement of socially responsible citizens. As a prime Catholic University in Northeastern Philippines, St. Paul University Philippines (SPUP) has forged partnerships with communities to address their need of service and the students’ need of learning through active engagement. This allows Paulinian learners to connect with and benefit their surrounding communities through service while integrating their learning to their particular academic discipline. As SL fosters collaboration and partnership, it provides an avenue for learners to make valuable contributions to the community. To this end, St. Paul …

Cslp In Sham Shui Po (理有「深」社區服務計劃) : A District-Based Service Learning Project, Its Mode Of Delivery And Effectiveness, Wing Ying, Winnie Lee
Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議
Background: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is committed to producing all-round graduates who are also responsible citizens and contributive members of the society. The annual campus-wide Community Service Learning Programme (CSLP) has been organized since 2004 to encourage staff and students to serve the community through the use of their professional knowledge and skills. About 800 students work on various service projects each year to serve the underprivileged groups of Hong Kong, Chinese mainland and overseas. In 2010/11, we started a new mode of service delivery with the implementation of a District-based Service-Learning Project in a relatively deprived area …

The Effectiveness Of Critical Time Intervention For Abused Women And Homeless People Leaving Dutch Shelters: Study Protocol Of Two Randomised Controlled Trials, Danielle Am Lako, Renée De Vet, Mariëlle D. Beijersbergen, Daniel B. Herman, Albert M. Van Hemert, Judith Rlm Wolf
Publications and Research
Background One of the main priorities of Dutch organisations providing shelter services is to develop evidence-based interventions in the care for abused women and homeless people. To date, most of these organisations have not used specific intervention models and the interventions which have been implemented rarely have an empirical and theoretical foundation. The present studies aim to examine the effectiveness of critical time intervention (CTI) for abused women and homeless people. Methods In two multi-centre randomised controlled trials we investigate whether CTI, a time-limited (nine month) outreach intervention, is more effective than care-as-usual for abused women and homeless people making …

Public Opinion And The Oregon Death With Dignity Act, Peggy Jo Ann Sandeen
Public Opinion And The Oregon Death With Dignity Act, Peggy Jo Ann Sandeen
Dissertations and Theses
Oregon voters legalized physician-assisted death in 1997 by passing the Oregon Death with Dignity Act. This law allowed terminally ill, mentally competent adult residents of the state to legally obtain a physician's prescription to hasten death under narrow sets of circumstances. The purpose of this study was twofold: to examine contemporary patterns of support for the law in Oregon and to explore how opinions have changed over time on the issue. This study examined patterns of public support among a random sample of registered Oregon voters for the state's death with dignity law, using a mixed mode (mail, online, and …
Lost In The Margins? Intersections Between Disability And Other Non-Dominant Statuses With Regard To Peer Victimization And Psychosocial Distress Among Oregon Teens, Marjorie Grace Mcgee
Lost In The Margins? Intersections Between Disability And Other Non-Dominant Statuses With Regard To Peer Victimization And Psychosocial Distress Among Oregon Teens, Marjorie Grace Mcgee
Dissertations and Theses
Youth with disabilities experience greater levels of victimization than non-disabled youth. However, little is known about the associations between peer victimization and disability status alone and in combination with sex and race/ethnicity, or with sex and sexual orientation. Further, little is known about the extent to which exposure to peer victimization mediates the relationship between disability status and psychosocial distress. Thus, one purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which disability status, as a marker of social difference, alone and in combination with other social identities, is associated with differential levels of exposure to peer victimization. A …

Measuring Learning Outcomes Of Students In Service-Learning Considering Diversity And Degree Of Experiences, Enrique G. Oracion, Emervencia L. Ligutom
Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議
Although Dan Butin (2011) has been critical of the place of service-learning in higher education institutions as a social movement and an intellectual movement, he actually had opened up four modes of service-learning outcomes of students exposed to this pedagogy that makes it a fertile field for scholarly research in education, in particular, and the social sciences, in general. These modes of learning which he categorized into technical, cultural, political and anti-foundational do not only suggest the diversity of learning that is offered by service-learning, but this typology also points out to the degree or different levels of learning that …
Program Evaluation And Assessment : Outcomes Of Service-Learning And A Research Agenda, Helen Thimmayya
Program Evaluation And Assessment : Outcomes Of Service-Learning And A Research Agenda, Helen Thimmayya
Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議
The construction of the concept of Service Learning is a visionary move that evolves from the perception that in serving others’ needs one benefits oneself in a tangible sense. This reiterates the democratic interdependence of human beings. Weaving it into the academic experience of students imposes a systematic structure which makes it quantifiable. Hence, evaluation. There is no dearth today of models of Service Learning application or of suggested tools for evaluation. The challenge is, however, in the uniqueness of each SL experience. The first challenge in creating an evaluation design is the pre-SL activity process. A circle of stake-holders …

The Role Of Psycho-Sociocultural Factors In Suicide Risk Among Mong/Hmong Youth, Tangjudy Vang
The Role Of Psycho-Sociocultural Factors In Suicide Risk Among Mong/Hmong Youth, Tangjudy Vang
Dissertations and Theses
This study examined psychological, social, and cultural factors that can affect suicide risk among Mong/Hmong youth between the ages of 18 and 25. Emerging evidence suggests that Mong/Hmong youth are at an increased risk for suicide (Huang, Lee, & Arganza, 2004; Jesilow & Xiong, 2007). Additionally, initial findings and theories have suggested potential associations between Mong/Hmong youth suicide risk and intergenerational family conflict, ethnic identity, acculturation, depression, and spirituality. The seriousness of suicide risk among Mong/Hmong youth in this country has been overlooked for decades; therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine these associations with the hope that …
Teachers' Negative Comments Toward Youth In Foster Care With Disabilities: How Do They Relate To Youths' Problem Behaviors, School Attitudes, And School Performance?, Sunghwan Noh
Dissertations and Theses
A large proportion of youth in foster care receive special education services, and poor educational outcomes are one of the most important difficulties facing these youth. One potential risk affecting the low educational achievements of youth in foster care and special education could be teachers' negative and stigmatizing comments toward them. Teachers' negative and stigmatizing comments could have negative effects on youths' behaviors, school attitudes and school performance. Yet, research on the nature and the impact of teachers' negative and stigmatizing comments remains limited.
Based on labeling and attribution theories, this study investigated the nature and impact of teachers' negative …

She created this untitled work as a personal reflection on the impact of war on individuals and society, as well as on the history of the profession of occupational therapy (OT), which began in response to military service members’ needs. Also embedded in the creation of this piece are the restorative benefits of participation in creative arts for OT practitioners who deliver services to patients experiencing profound life changes. Additionally, this article explores the artists’ use of art …
