Review Essay: Working Evangelicalisms: Deploying Fragmented Theologies In Secular Space, Justin Kh Tse Sep 2013

Review Essay: Working Evangelicalisms: Deploying Fragmented Theologies In Secular Space, Justin Kh Tse

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Over the last three years, three new important books have contributed to critical geographies of American evangelicalism: Jason Dittmer and Tristan Sturm’s Mapping the End Times, Jason Hackworth’s Faith Based, and Justin G. Wilford’s Sacred Subdivisions. Demonstrating that evangelicals are ignored at geographers’ peril in political, economic, and cultural geography, these new books each demonstrate that evangelical usages of space have contemporary salience in secular geopolitical formations, domestic economic policy, and the interpretation of cultural landscapes. Because these three books represent three different subfields in human geography (political, economic, and cultural geography), they can be taken together to critically interrogate …

Incoming Student To Gardner-Webb Overcomes Major Obstacles, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

The start of another fall semester at Gardner-Webb means a new beginning for incoming freshmen. This could not be exhibited more than in Lee Cooper, who is a survivor in every sense of the word. From cancer as a child to the sudden death of his wife and unborn baby at the hands of a drunk driver, Cooper repeatedly demonstrates resilience against all odds.

A Multiplicity Of Masculinities: The Formation Of National Identity In Imperial Germany And Its Influence On Notions Of The Masculine, Faruk Pasic Aug 2013

A Multiplicity Of Masculinities: The Formation Of National Identity In Imperial Germany And Its Influence On Notions Of The Masculine, Faruk Pasic

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This investigation focuses roughly on the interval between 1870 and 1890, which can be described as the formative period of the German Empire. It seeks to understand how the development of a national identity in Imperial Germany contributed to the notion that certain expressions of masculinity formed the “German character,” i.e., the notion that there was a particular German masculinity.

Joseph Smith, The Prophet-Editor, Joshua Wheatley, Dr. Grant Underwood Aug 2013

Joseph Smith, The Prophet-Editor, Joshua Wheatley, Dr. Grant Underwood

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I focused my research on an effort to better understand Joseph Smith’s process of revelation, in light of the many revisions that he later made to his own revelations. I decided that my primary source material would be the revelations that Joseph recorded between 1828 and 1831. The goal of my research was to compare variant texts of each revelation, tracking the revisions that were made to each text. My hypothesis was that, by using historical context and by critically analyzing patterns of revision that reoccurred in many revelations, it would be possible to classify the revisions into categories. I …

Byu Office Of Research And Creative Activities, Benjamin Park

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The reception of a BYU ORCA Mentoring Grant, and the research and writing it enabled me to perform, was one of the best experiences during my time at BYU. I researched the intellectual environment of early Mormon rhetoric, focusing specifically on how it balanced the tensions of Enlightenment thought on the one hand and Romantic intimations on the other. The grant provided me with the opportunity to not only delve into secondary literature, but also a vast amount of primary sources. The benefit of this project not only resulted in several individual papers, but also helped prepare me for more …

An Introduction To The Historical Development And Doctrinal Contributions Of Joseph Smith’S Revision Of The Bible With German Translation Of Key Revised Passages [In German], David Charles, Dr. David Seely

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The aim of this project was to produce, in German, a substantial piece of writing on the Joseph Smith Translation for the benefit of LDS and non-LDS interested in the JST. To date, there is virtually no literature available on the JST in German, nor have the Prophet’s revised passages ever been translated and published in German. The general outline of my study is as follows:

The Influence Of Religiosity And Stigma On Mental Health Outcomes For An African American And Latino Clinical Sample, Francisco J. Quintana Aug 2013

The Influence Of Religiosity And Stigma On Mental Health Outcomes For An African American And Latino Clinical Sample, Francisco J. Quintana

Doctoral Dissertations

Few studies have explored the link between religion and mental health, especially among ethnic minority groups in the U.S. Although African Americans and Latinos have been found to rely heavily on their religious faith in order to cope with adversities in their lives, both ethnic groups have been traditionally underrepresented in this line of work. Thus, little is known about the religion-mental health link as it applies to these minority groups.

The aims of the present study were as follows: (1) to determine whether various forms of religion (self-rated religiosity, church attendance, and religious beliefs and practices) would be predictive …

The Nazi "Church": Nazism As Ersatzreligion, Carol Mckinley Harris Aug 2013

The Nazi "Church": Nazism As Ersatzreligion, Carol Mckinley Harris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

"German Christianity is a distortion. You are either a German or you are Christian."

~ Adolph Hitler

In the last decade, scores of religious scholars have dissected the concept of the Third Reich as a religion. Their theories depict a vast range of extremes from National Socialism portrayed as a secular or political religion to painting the Nazis as anti-Christian pagans. The "Nazi Church" was neither a political religion nor was it simply paganism; instead, National Socialism became its own religion which replaced traditional German Christianity at a time when a nation, ripe for questioning God, was suffering from the …
