Cultivating Creativity: Documenting The Journey, Grace Schlitt Sep 2013

Cultivating Creativity: Documenting The Journey, Grace Schlitt

Learn X Design Conference Series

As a Master’s of Education in Learning Sciences candidate at the University of Washington and a licensed architect, I co-taught the course Cultivating Creativity with Professor Iain Robertson, Winter Quarter 2012. This course is offered annually to a group of 15 Honors students at the University. Professor Robertson has taught this class for five years. Participating students were in ‘non-creative’ majors such as Biology, Chemistry, or Math. Two students were in Computer Science and Religious Studies. Most of the students arrived expecting to ‘learn’ how to be creative. Through exercises that Professor Robertson developed, the students gained confidence in their …

In Harmony: History And Perceptions Of Mormonism In Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, 1829–Present, Stanley J. Thayne, Dr. J. Spencer Fluhman

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Since Mormonism’s exodus from New York and Pennsylvania, due to what Joseph Smith described as a “spirit of persecution” in the area, popular perceptions among many locals have been anything but positive. “It is a fact, of which we are not particularly proud, that Susquehanna County harbored such a madman as Joe Smith,” wrote Emily C. Blackman in her 1873 History of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. Negative perceptions were perpetuated throughout the twentieth century through continually recited folklore, often printed in newspapers and county histories, and even manifest itself in occasional hostility toward missionaries. More recently, however, popular attitudes to Mormonism …

Exploring The Shaker Aesthetic At Sabbathday Lake, Elizabeth Pinborogh, Dr. Kimberly Johnson Sep 2013

Exploring The Shaker Aesthetic At Sabbathday Lake, Elizabeth Pinborogh, Dr. Kimberly Johnson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My goal was to study the Shaker aesthetic, the distinctive set of characteristics that define Shaker art and architecture. Through preliminary research, I had discovered that Shaker buildings where characterized by symmetry, straight lines, squareness, and simplicity, and I wanted to experience the aesthetic firsthand. The questions I was trying to answer were: Why is the Shaker aesthetic appealing to artists and to people from many different academic disciplines? What is my poetic interpretation of the Shaker aesthetic? I also wanted to read Shaker women’s autobiographical and spiritual writings that I could not get access to anywhere else.

When Is A Convento Kiva? : A Postcolonial-Critical Indigenous Critique Of The Convento Kiva At Pecos National Historical Park, David M. Holtkamp Sep 2013

When Is A Convento Kiva? : A Postcolonial-Critical Indigenous Critique Of The Convento Kiva At Pecos National Historical Park, David M. Holtkamp

American Studies ETDs

At Pecos National Historical Park there exists a Puebloan ceremonial structure known as a kiva located within the confines of a 17th century Spanish church. The placement of this kiva in the church implies a different name, "convento kiva." Western historians and archaeologists have generated a metanarrative that presents the history of Pecos Pueblo and its inhabitants in a terminal format that is the Pueblo was doomed to abandonment once contact with the Spanish was made regardless of how the Pueblo Indians responded to Spanish colonialism. Contrary to this notion, the descendants of Pecos at the Pueblo of Jemez maintain …

Measurement Of The Acoustical Performance Of Traditional Vernacular Mosques In Malaysia, Nazli Che Din, Nurul Amira Abd Jalil, Yahaya Ahmad, Rosniza Othman, Toru Otsuru Sep 2013

Measurement Of The Acoustical Performance Of Traditional Vernacular Mosques In Malaysia, Nazli Che Din, Nurul Amira Abd Jalil, Yahaya Ahmad, Rosniza Othman, Toru Otsuru

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Mosques are worship places used for activities performed by Muslim e.g. prayer, speech and Quran recitations. All activities in the mosques are important acoustical interests for satisfactory speech intelligibility i.e. verbal communication. Unfortunately, recent architectural styles or restoration works were given very little attention about acoustical considerations. In this research, the acoustical performance of five selected traditional vernacular mosques in Malaysia, built between 1728 - 1830, have been investigated as a preliminary study. The acoustic parameters such as reverberation time (RT), clarity (C50) and speech transmission index (ST!) were measured. Measurement of the influence of the operating facilities in the …
