Revisiting The Mandaeans And The New Testament, James F. Mcgrath
Revisiting The Mandaeans And The New Testament, James F. Mcgrath
Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS
The Mandaeans have been known to scholars for as long as there has been modern scholarship. Thanks to advances in technology, you can now find some of their ancient texts online, and videos of their baptismal rituals on YouTube. Yet as fascinating as the Mandaeans are, and as much as modern technologies can facilitate greater familiarity with them, the amount of attention that they receive is surprisingly sparse – although there are encouraging signs that that is at least beginning to change.

Men's Modesty, Religion, And The State: Spaces Of Collision, Karen M. Morin
Men's Modesty, Religion, And The State: Spaces Of Collision, Karen M. Morin
Faculty Journal Articles
This article examines religious practices in the United States, which govern modesty and other dress norms for men. I focus both on the spaces within which they most collide with regulatory regimes of the state and the legal implications of these norms, particularly for observant Muslim men. Undergirding the research are those ‘‘gender equality’’ claims made by many religious adherents, that men are required to maintain proper modesty norms just as are women. Also undergirding the research is the extensive anti-Islam bias in American culture today. The spaces within which men’s religiously proscribed dress and grooming norms are most at …

The Effect Of Prior High School Dual Enrollment Course Completion And Access Equity On First Generation College Attending Students, Douglas E. Stansberry
Student Work
Cumulative college grade point average, ratios of college credits earned to college credits attempted and persistence from one year in college to the next are impacted by the presence of dual enrollment credits earned by students while in high school. The groups analyzed in this study were first generation college attending minority and majority students who completed dual enrollment credits while in high school and attended the same university. The groups compared in this study were minority students who completed three to five dual enrollment credits while in high school ( n = 19), majority students who completed three to …
The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford
The Qur'anic Jesus: A Study Of Parallels With Non-Biblical Texts, Brian C. Bradford
Dissertations
This study examines which texts and religious communities existed that could well have contributed to Muhammad’s understanding of Jesus. The most important finding is that the Qur’anic verses mentioning Jesus’ birth, certain miracles, and his crucifixion bear close resemblance to sectarian texts dating as early as the second century. Accordingly, the idea that such verses from the Qur’an involving Jesus are original productions of the seventh century should be reconsidered.
The research covers a series of significant topics that support these findings. They include theological conflicts in third century Arabia; the interaction between Christian monks, Saracens, Arabs, and Ishmaelites; sectarian …

African American Muslim Women: Navigating Racial And Religious Identities, Margaret Ann Parrish
African American Muslim Women: Navigating Racial And Religious Identities, Margaret Ann Parrish
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Since the events of 9/11, a large amount of scholarship has been dedicated to uncovering information regarding the experiences of foreign Muslims living in the United States, while very little attention has been paid to the experiences of African American Muslims. This study seeks to remedy that gap by focusing on the experiences of African American Muslim women who wear a hijab throughout their day-to-day lives. Four women were chosen for this study and interview questions were developed with a specific focus on how they navigate both their religious and racial identities on a daily basis. Beginning research from the …

Life Post 9/11: Experiences Of Korean Americans Ten Years Later, Jay Lee
Dissertations and Theses
This is one of the first qualitative studies to investigate experiences of Korean-American Christians living in New York City at the time of 9/11. This study sought to gain an understanding of how a group of Second Generation Korean-American Christians living in New York City at the time of the 9/11 attacks experienced that event and the event's impact on their religious beliefs. The study also investigated the communication context at the time of the ten year anniversary of the event, September 11th, 2011. The guiding research questions were: RQ1) What were their life experiences of 9/11? RQ2) Was their …

Gardner-Webb Professor Joe Collins Authors Book On Understanding God’S Calling, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
A newly published book by Gardner-Webb University Associate Professor of Religious Studies Dr. Joe Collins is based on 20 years of research and experience with the church. The purpose of “What Does God Want Me To Do” is to help individuals understand and respond to God’s calling, while helping them grasp the idea that being called is not a one-time event but rather an ongoing spiritual phenomenon. “’What is my calling?’ is a question Christians and non-Christians alike ask themselves,” said Collins.

The Political Determinants Of Health: The Impact Of Political Factors On Black-White Infant Mortality In The United States, Rongal D. Nikora
Political Science ETDs
Objective This exploratory research project considers the role that the political culture of individual U.S. states may play in determining variation in the countrys infant mortality rate. Specifically, do conventional and/or racialized measures of political culture help explain state-to-state variation, particularly in black infant mortality, as well as the longstanding mortality gap between infants born to black and white women? Conventional measures of political culture in this study include a state's past voting record in presidential elections, as well as how states are categorized under Elazar's (1966) typology of state civic culture (i.e., as moralistic, individualistic or traditionalistic). Racialized measures …

An Ochered Fossil Marine Shell From The Mousterian Of Fumane Cave, Italy, Marco Peresani, Marian Vanhaeren, Ermanno Quaggiotto
KIP Articles
A scanty but varied ensemble of finds challenges the idea that Neandertal material culture was essentially static and did not include symbolic items. In this study we report on a fragmentary Miocene-Pliocene fossil marine shell, Aspa marginata, discovered in a Discoid Mousterian layer of the Fumane Cave, northern Italy, dated to at least 47.6-45.0 Cal ky BP. The shell was collected by Neandertals at a fossil exposure probably located more than 100 kms from the site. Microscopic analysis of the shell surface identifies clusters of striations on the inner lip. A dark red substance, trapped inside micropits produced by bioeroders, …

Gardner-Webb Alumnus Shares Christ’S Love With Soldiers At Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
When God commissions people to serve in missions, they generally understand they may not be offered an opportunity to minister in a peaceful environment. GWU Alumnus Terry Eddinger (’88) finds himself in a challenging environment at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, while ministering in what has been described as a political and religiously charged location. As part of the War on Terror, that’s where Eddinger is currently serving as chaplain to United States troops who work at the terrorist detainment camp.

Both have served in the United States and abroad and both draw on their experiences for their current work, while providing the witness of a religious presence on campus.
