A Nation Of Outsiders: Industrialists, African Americans, And Veterans In East Tennesee During Reconstruction, Katharine Dahlstrand
A Nation Of Outsiders: Industrialists, African Americans, And Veterans In East Tennesee During Reconstruction, Katharine Dahlstrand
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
With the end of the American Civil War, the nation created entire populations of outsiders seeking acceptance and participation in the rebuilding of the country. Northern industrialists, African Americans, and veterans returning from military service demonstrated the failures of Reconstruction in their efforts to reconcile their position with the white southern inhabitants of East Tennessee. This region represents a unique place to explore Reconstruction and exclusionary citizenship because of its distinct relationship with both the Union and the Confederacy during the war. This thesis examines the people who lived the life of an outsider because of their background, skin color, …

"A Spirit Of Benevolence", Jennifer L. Boxen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis argues that the British Public Health movement did not begin in 1842 with Edwin Chadwick's publication, Report on the Sanitary Conditions of the Labouring Population of Great Britain (1842), or in 1848, with the subsequent passage of the Public Health Act. The beginning of the public health movement was instead the product of local initiatives such as the Manchester Board of Health, administered not by central government, but by members of the local community supported by predominantly philanthropic funding. The Manchester movement predated Chadwick's efforts by at least half a century and bore a greater resemblance to the …

A Novel Method To Evaluate Local Control Of Lung Cancer In Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (Sbrt) Treatment Using 18f-Fdg Positron Emission Tomography (Pet), Vindu Kathriarachchi
A Novel Method To Evaluate Local Control Of Lung Cancer In Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (Sbrt) Treatment Using 18f-Fdg Positron Emission Tomography (Pet), Vindu Kathriarachchi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
An improved method is introduced for prediction of local tumor control following lung stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET). A normalized background-corrected tumor maximum Standard Uptake Value (SUVcmax) is introduced using the mean uptake of adjacent aorta (SUVref), instead of the maximum uptake of lung tumor (SUVmax). This method minimizes the variations associated with SUVmax and objectively demonstrates a strong correlation between the low SUVcmax (< 2.5-3.0) and local control of post lung SBRT. The false positive rates of both SUVmax and SUVcmax increase with inclusion of early (<6 months) PET scans, therefore such inclusion is not recommended for assessing local tumor control of post lung SBRT.

(Re)Making Men, Representing The Caribbean Nation: Authorialindividuation In Works By Fred D’Aguiar, Robert Antoni, Andmarlon James, Sheryl C. Gifford
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This dissertation proposes that West Indian contemporary male writers develop literary authority, or a voice that represents the nation, via a process of individuation. This process enables the contemporary male writer to unite the disparities of the matriarchal and patriarchal authorial traditions that inform his development of a distinctive creative identity. I outline three stages of authorial individuation that are inspired by Jung’s theory of individuation. The first is the contemporary male writer’s return to his nationalist forebears’ tradition to dissolve his persona, or identification with patriarchal authority; Fred D’Aguiar’s “The Last Essay About Slavery” and Feeding the Ghosts illustrate …

A Troubled Past: Reconfiguring Postwar Suburban American Identity In Revolutionary Road, 1961 And Mad Men, 2007-2012, Erin M. Kiley
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis takes a cultural studies approach to representations of post-war U.S. suburbia in Richard Yates’ 1961 novel Revolutionary Road, as well as in the contemporary AMC television series Mad Men. These texts explore the postwar time period, which holds a persistently prominent and idealized space in the collective cultural imagination of America, despite the fact that it was a period troubled by isolationism, containment culture, rampant consumerism, and extreme pressure to conform to social roles. This project disrupts the romantic narrative of postwar America by focusing on the latent anxiety within the suburban landscape—by interrogating the performative nature of …
Certificate Authentication Security And The Preservation Of Privacy In Wireless Access In Vehicular Environment (Wave), Clifford Allen Kemp
Certificate Authentication Security And The Preservation Of Privacy In Wireless Access In Vehicular Environment (Wave), Clifford Allen Kemp
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Future vehicles will exchange safety-critical information messages wirelessly with other vehicles on the road. We must provide secure mechanisms to validate the authenticity and integrity of these messages. The IEEE Standard 1609.2 defines the format of secure messages and identifies security algorithms and mechanism for use in Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment (WAVE). We propose an organizational structure for Central Management Entities (CMEs) to address these goals and functional requirements, and to balance the security of communications with protection of user privacy. A concern in vehicular communications is the privacy of vehicle owners. Privacy must be preserved and the user …

Class Of Rational Surfaces With A Non-Rational Singularity Explicitly Given By A Single Equation, Drake. Harmon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The family of algebraic surfaces X dened by the single equation zn = (y a1x) (y anx)(x 1) over an algebraically closed eld k of characteristic zero, where a1; : : : ; an 2 k are distinct, is studied. It is shown that this is a rational surface with a non-rational singularity at the origin. The ideal class group of the surface is computed. The terms of the Chase-Harrison-Rosenberg seven term exact sequence on the open complement of the ramication locus of X ! A2 are computed; the Brauer group is also studied in this unramied setting. The analysis …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to evaluate student outcomes following implementation of a clinical scholar model of clinical education in one of four placement sites of a college of nursing grounded in a caring philosophy. The question guiding the study was to determine if the clinical scholar model has an influence on student perceptions and outcomes when used with second-degree accelerated BSN students. Watson's Human Caring theory, based on ten caritas processes, serves as the theoretical framework for this study (Watson, 2007). A sequential mixed-methods approach that combined quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques was implemented using a pre-experimental, …

Concept Of Fit, Scott Vaughn Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this mixed method study was to understand how demographic fit, organizational fit, and group fit influenced secondary school assistant principal (AP) selection and assimilation for candidates who completed the Paradise School District (pseudonym) leadership training program during the 2004-2005 to 2008-2009 school years. However, the results indicated that Hispanic candidates were selected at a higher rate than other groups of candidates. The results also indicated that Black candidates were selected at the same rate as the average for all candidates ; however these results may be misleading because Black candidates were disproportionally over-represented in the study sample. …
Consequences Of Real Earnings Management And Corporate Governance, Adam J. Greiner
Consequences Of Real Earnings Management And Corporate Governance, Adam J. Greiner
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
I examine the impact of real earnings management (REM) and corporate governance on cash holdings. Extant research documents an increase in both cash holdings and REM activity in recent years and shows that agency conflicts influence both the levels and valuations of cash holdings. Motivated by agency problems of REM and Jensen's (1986) arguments concerning the free cash flow problem, I investigate whether opportunistic asset sales and reductions in discretionary expenditures are associated with levels and valuations of cash holdings. Prior research also shows that strong corporate governance mitigates opportunistic earnings management behavior and enhances the valuation of cash holdings. …

Creating Mindfulness With Sensual Functional Handmade Ceramics, Alexandria. Schwartz
Creating Mindfulness With Sensual Functional Handmade Ceramics, Alexandria. Schwartz
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
I create opportunities for nourishment that are physical, emotional and spiritual with my functional porcelain vessels. They reference the human body's sensual curves, dimples, and bulges, establishing the experience of eating as a metaphor for the sensual experience of human interaction. The tactility is heightened by the variety of glazes dancing around the vessels, from satiny smooth and skin-like, to wet and dripping. Handmade vessels connect the users not only more deeply to the food that provides them nourishment, but also connects them more deeply to one another, and to the maker of the work. The slow, deliberate work of …

Cumulative Trauma Among Adult Mayas Living In Southeast Florida, Eugenia I. Millender
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The toxic combination of social, psychological, environmental, cultural, and physiological trauma Mayas living in Southeast Florida face daily places them at higher risk for mental and physical disorders (Marmot & Wilkinson, 2006; WHO, 2010, September). The burden of disease is not limited to mental disorder comorbidities; psychological stress can also induce or exacerbate chronic medical diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and hypertension (Brunner & Marmot, 2006; Sridhar, 2007). ... The continuation of this disregard will add to the health disparity of this nation by delaying assessment, treatment, and development of interventions. The purpose of this study was to explore cumulative …
Democratization And Exogenous Cultural Influence, John R. Batey
Democratization And Exogenous Cultural Influence, John R. Batey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Democratic forms of government are either consolidating democratic institutions or unraveling into authoritarianism in the former Soviet Union. Among the possible causes of each success or failure to consolidate democracy is the character of civil society and its cultural proximity to long-standing, modern state-based, consolidated democracies of the West. What impact does Western or Westernized media have upon the indigenous civil societies of Eastern Europe, and is this impact sufficient to consolidate democracy among the states of the former Soviet Union? As case studies, Eastern Europe contains two states, Estonia and Russia, where democracy has either succeeded or failed alongside …
Cyclic Lipodepsipeptides As Lead Structures For The Discovery Of New Antiobiotics, Nina. Bionda
Cyclic Lipodepsipeptides As Lead Structures For The Discovery Of New Antiobiotics, Nina. Bionda
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
With antimicrobial resistance to current drugs steadily rising, the development of new antibiotics with novel mechanisms of action has become an imperative. The majority of life-threatening infections worldwide are caused by "ESKAPE" pathogens which are encountered in more than 40% of hospital-acquired infections, and are resistant to the majority of commonly used antibiotics. Naturally occurring cyclic depsipeptides, microbial secondary metabolites that contain one or more ester bonds in addition to amide bonds, have emerged as an important source of pharmacologically active compounds or lead structures for the development of novel antibiotics. Some of those peptides are either already marketed (daptomycin) …
Development Of A Novel Assay For In Vivo Screening Of Neuromodulatory Drugs And Targeted Disruption Of Cholinergic Synaptic Transmission In Drosophila Melanogaster, Monica Mejia
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Finding novel compounds that affect neuronal or muscular function is of great interest, as they can serve as potential pharmacological agents for a variety of neurological disorders. For instance, conopeptides have been developed into powerful drugs like the painkiller PrialtTM. Most conopeptides, however, have yet to be characterized, revealing the need for a rapid and straightforward screening method. We have designed a novel bioassay, which allows for unbiased screening of biological activity of compounds in vivo against numerous molecular targets on a wide variety of neurons and muscles in a rapid and straightforward manner. For this, we paired nanoinjection of …

Bankruptcy Trusts, Transparency And The Future Of Asbestos Compensation, S. Todd Brown
Journal Articles
As we enter the fifth decade of asbestos personal injury litigation, much of the debate over its immediate future centers on the operations of bankruptcy trusts and their relationship to the tort system. Roughly 100 companies have entered bankruptcy as a result of their unsustainable asbestos liabilities, and, from these bankruptcies, approximately 60 trusts have been established or are in the process of being established. Some critics contend that the trust system is plagued by fraud and abuse; allowing plaintiffs' lawyers to obtain compensation from the trusts for fraudulent claims and to evade relevant discovery obligations under applicable state law. …

Across The Empire: British Women's Travel Writings And Women's Place In The British Imperial Project During The Second Half Of The Nineteenth Century., Katie. Wernecke
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Women in Britain in the nineteenth century were expected to fulfill the traditional roles of wife and mother as determined by British society. Over the course of the nineteenth century, these ideals evolved, but the core functions of wife and mother remained at the center. Woman's participation outside the household was limited. British women travelers during the nineteenth century found themselves in many different environments. By examining samples of women's travel narratives from various locations in the Empire, this study analyzes the daily lives of British women in the Empire and determines that, while maintaining their roles within the private …

Any (Body) Who Will Listen, Gavin Feller
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis explores how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) has used media technology as part of its missionary communication strategy. Particular attention is paid to the Internet as a space for religious practice and how the LDS Church has sought to extend its media practices and missionary efforts online. By utilizing new media technology to find individuals interested in hearing its message, the LDS Church faces new challenges to its traditional face-to-face missionary program, its centralized hierarchy of control and its ongoing struggle for identity within American Christian culture. Throughout its history, the LDS Church's missionary …
