Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice Jan 2013

Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice

Reading Faculty Publications (Archived)

College students enrolled in a developmental reading program often do not perceive themselves as remedial readers, have low self-esteem about their abilities, or have a limited understanding about reading and therefore are unable to engage themselves with effective reading strategies. The challenge for educators in developmental college reading is to engage and motivate students with educational methods that create an awareness and understanding of reading by using strategies and practices appropriate for students’ diverse educational needs also necessary for their reading achievement. At the same time students need to develop the metacognitive awareness of their own knowledge of and use …

Finding Meaning In Misery: Can Stressful Situations Provide Meaning In Life?, Jacob Juhl Jan 2013

Finding Meaning In Misery: Can Stressful Situations Provide Meaning In Life?, Jacob Juhl

Psychology

Theory and research investigating the relationship between affective experiences and meaning in life have focused on how positive affect contributes to perceptions of meaning in life. No work has considered how people can attain meaning in life while experiencing negative affect. The present work tested whether affectively negative circumstances can provide meaning in life. Specifically, two studies, using distinct methodologies, tested whether people can attain meaning in life while experiencing the stress associated with goal-pursuit. In Study 1, the salience of stressful college-related goal-pursuit was experimentally heightened and then perceptions of goal-engagement, meaning in life, and positive and negative affect …

A Test Of An Interactive Model Of Binge Eating In Men, Allison Minnich Jan 2013

A Test Of An Interactive Model Of Binge Eating In Men, Allison Minnich

Psychology

Past research has shown that a combination of high perfectionism, high body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem is predictive of binge eating in college women (Bardone-Cone et al., 2006). The aim of the present study was to determine whether this triple interaction model was applicable to men. Male undergraduate college students from a Midwestern university (n=302) completed self-report measures online at two different time points. Analyses revealed a significant interaction between the three risk factors, such that high perfectionism, high body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem at Time 1was predictive of greater Time 2 binge eating symptoms. However, the triple interaction was …

Social Norms' Influence On Gendered Behaviors, Elizabeth Ewing Lee Jan 2013

Social Norms' Influence On Gendered Behaviors, Elizabeth Ewing Lee

Psychology

Individual variability in engagement in gendered behavior is primarily assumed to be the result of variability in gender roles (i.e., femininity, masculinity; Bem, 1981). However, contextual factors have also been shown to influence behaving in gendered ways (Leszczynski & Strough, 2008; Pickard & Strough, 2003). The current studies sought to explore engagement in gendered behaviors by examining the influence of social norms on gendered behaviors, as well as how those perceptions interact with gender self-concepts (i.e., gendered contingencies of selfworth, self-efficacy for behaving in gendered ways, similarity to others of one's sex) to influence engagement in gendered behaviors. Two studies …

Characterization Of Sensitivity Of Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum Isolates From North Central U.S. To Thiophanate-Methyl And Metconazole, Gazala Ameen

Plant Pathology

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary causes Sclerotinia stem rot on canola and many other crops of economic importance in the U.S. SSR is primarily controlled with fungicides applied at flowering time. Most fungicides currently used to control SSR can promote resistance buildup in their target populations making monitoring of sensitivity important. In this study the reaction of S. sclerotiorum to thiophanate-methyl (TM) and metconazole (MTZ) was characterized. Samples collected in several states of north central U.S. were used. Three and ten isolates were considered to be moderately insensitive to TM and MTZ, respectively. Greenhouse trials indicated, however, that diseases caused …

Developing Management Tools For Sunflower Rust (Puccinia Helianthi), Andrew John Friskop

Plant Pathology

Sunflower rust, caused by Puccinia helianthi (Schwein), is an economically important disease in North Dakota. Since 2008, sunflower rust incidence and severity have increased. Therefore, a four year study was initiated to examine the management strategies for the disease. A total of 19 fungicide efficacy and timing trials were conducted from 2008-2011. Results indicated that DMI and QoI chemistries can be used effectively to manage the disease. Timing trials indicated that disease control was highest when fungicide applications were made at R5.0-R5.8. Results indicate a fungicide application is warranted when rust severities at approximately 1% are found on the upper-four …

Comparative Population Genetics Of Fusarium Graminearum And Novel Sources Of Resistance To Fusarium Head Blight In Spring Wheat, Krishna Datta Puri Jan 2013

Comparative Population Genetics Of Fusarium Graminearum And Novel Sources Of Resistance To Fusarium Head Blight In Spring Wheat, Krishna Datta Puri

Plant Pathology

Fusarium graminearum is the major causal agent of Fusarium head blight (FHB) in cereal crops. The fungus produces several types of trichothecenes [Deoxynivalenol (DON) and its acetylated derivatives, 3-acetyldeoxynivalenol (3ADON) and 15-acetyldeoxynivalenol (15ADON), and nivalenol (NIV)]. Characterization of 123 isolates collected during 1980 to 2000 (old collection), and 43 isolates collected in 2008 (new collection) from North Dakota revealed that 15ADON producing isolates were predominant (98%) in the old collection while the 3ADON producing isolates accounted for 43% in the new collection. Further, evaluation showed that the 3ADON isolates caused a higher disease severity and accumulated more DON in spring …

Correcting Heat Flow Data In The United States To Account For Climate Change, Godswill Njoku Jan 2013

Correcting Heat Flow Data In The United States To Account For Climate Change, Godswill Njoku

Theses and Dissertations

Heat flow measurements may require correction for both recent warming and post-glacial warming signals. Warming during the last century can be detected in borehole temperature profiles. Both climate warming signals during the past century and post-glacial warming signals during the past 10 millennia are greatest near the surface and diminish with depth.

Both atmospheric data and borehole temperature data show that recent warming varies systematically with latitude along a north-south transect in the United States. The systematic increase with latitude from +0.7 oC at 41.6oN to +2.3 oC at 49oN during the last century is consistent with the prediction that …

Rhomboid Proteases And Surface Adhesins During Cryptosporidium Development, Ebot Sahidu Tabe

Microbiological Sciences

Cryptosporidium parvum, a primary cause of cryptosporidiosis in humans and livestock worldwide, has a complex life cycle that includes an environmental oocyst stage, and stages of merogony, gametogony, and sporogony that are completed in a single host. Development within the host takes place in a protected intracellular but extracytoplasmic niche at the apical surface of epithelial cells. The life cycle can be described as having alternating extracellular invasive and intracellular replicative stages. With no effective chemotherapeutics, understanding the mechanism of host cell invasion by this pathogen is paramount. The first aim dissertation was to identify functions of sporozoite surface proteins …

Lung Mucosal Response To Repeated Inhalational Insults With Immunomodulatory Agents In A Murine Model Of Fungal Asthma: Airway Epithelium Takes The Center Stage, Sumali Pandey

Microbiological Sciences

Asthma is a debilitating disease of the lungs affecting 235 million people worldwide. Fungus-associated asthma leads to a particularly severe type of disease, and exposure to environmental fungi and their products is unavoidable due to the ubiquitous nature of fungal species. Besides being allergenic, fungi are opportunistic pathogens, and anti-fungal and/or allergic pathways may be modified through repeated inhalation of immunomodulatory agents, affecting the outcome of fungus-induced asthma. Our aim in this project was to investigate the extent to which repeated inhalation of immunomodulatory agents influence the lung mucosal responses in a naïve murine host or in one that had …

Analysis Of Significant Factors In Division I Men's College Basketball And Development Of A Predictive Model, Samuel Paul Unruh

Statistics

While a number of statistics are collected during an NCAA Division I men’s college basketball game, it is potentially of interest to universities, coaches, players, and fans which of these variables are most significant in determining wins and losses. To this end, statistics were collected from two seasons of games and analyzed using logistic and least squares regression methods. The differences between the two competing teams in four common statistics were found to be significant to determining victory: assists, free throw attempts, defensive rebounds, and turnovers. The logistic and least squares models were then used with data from the 2011- …

Predicting Recessions In The U.S. With Yield Curve Spread, Di Huang Jan 2013

Predicting Recessions In The U.S. With Yield Curve Spread, Di Huang

Statistics

This paper proposes a hidden Markov model for the signal of U.S. recessions. The model uses the spread of interest rate between 10-year Treasury bond and 3-month Treasury bill, together with other financial indicators which are the real M2 growth, the change in the Standard and Poor's 500 index of stock prices, and difference between the 6-month commercial paper and 6-month Treasury bill rates as predictors. The hidden Markov model considers temporal dependence between the recession signals and provides an estimate of the long-term probability of recessions. The empirical results indicate the hidden Markov model well predict the signal of …

Representing Intersubject Variability With A Statistical Shape And Alignment Model Of The Knee, Chandreshwar Rao Jan 2013

Representing Intersubject Variability With A Statistical Shape And Alignment Model Of The Knee, Chandreshwar Rao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prior statistical shape models have not considered multiple structures in the knee joint to characterize anatomic variation which are required to investigate joint mechanics further for the successful knee replacement. Accordingly, the study's objective was to develop statistical shape and alignment model (SSAM) to capture intersubject variability and demonstrate the ability to generate realistic instances for use in finite element analysis (FEA). SSAM described the variability in the training set of 20 subjects with a series of modes of variation obtained by performing principal component analysis (PCA). PCA produced modes of variation with the first 3 modes representing 70% and …

Restrictive And Expansive Views Of Equality: A Grounded Theory Study That Explores The Influence Of Racial Consciousness On The Behaviors Of White Faculty In The Classroom, Chayla M. Haynes Jan 2013

Restrictive And Expansive Views Of Equality: A Grounded Theory Study That Explores The Influence Of Racial Consciousness On The Behaviors Of White Faculty In The Classroom, Chayla M. Haynes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attempts to address the ever increasing achievement gap among students have failed to explain how and why educational traditions and teaching practices perpetuate the devaluing of some and the overvaluing of others. This predicament, which plagues our educational system, has been of increased concern, given the growing racial diversity among college students and the saturation of White faculty in the academy. White faculty make up the majority, 79%, of all faculty in the academy. White faculty, whether consciously or unconsciously, are less likely to interrogate how race and racism both privilege them within the academy and influence their faculty behaviors. …

Everything In Di Dark Muss Come To Light: A Postcolonial Investigation Of The Practice Of Extra Lessons At The Secondary Level In Jamaica's Education System, Saran Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite the vast research examining the evolution of Caribbean education systems, little is chronologically tied to the postcolonial theoretical perspectives of specific island-state systems, such as the Jamaican education system and its relationship with the underground shadow education system. This dissertation study sought to address the gaps in the literature by critically positioning postcolonial theories in education to examine the macro- and micro-level impacts of extra lessons on secondary education in Jamaica. The following postcolonial theoretical (PCT) tenets in education were contextualized from a review of the literature: (a) PCT in education uses colonial discourse analysis to critically deconstruct and …

Remedies Reveals The Seamless Web, Candace Kovacic-Fleischer Jan 2013

Remedies Reveals The Seamless Web, Candace Kovacic-Fleischer

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

INTRODUCTION: Remedies is a course that consolidates many of the concepts learned in the first year of law school and some from the second. A typical Remedies course will reintroduce principles from constitutional law, compare and contrast torts and contracts, and apply criminal concepts in civil contexts. Teaching Remedies can be both challenging and rewarding. Challenging because it crosses a wide variety of subject areas. Rewarding because it weaves a variety of subject areas into the "seamless web" of the law, eliciting from students an occasional "aha." Early classes in law school tend to separate courses into discrete subject areas, …
