Controlled Delivery Of Basal Level Of Insulin, Mayura Arvind Oak Jan 2013

Controlled Delivery Of Basal Level Of Insulin, Mayura Arvind Oak

Pharmacy

The present study was aimed at developing a delivery system for controlled release of insulin at basal level from chitosan-zinc-insulin complex incorporated into thermosensitive polymer, poly(lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(lactic acid) (PLA-PEG-PLA). Chitosan-zinc-insulin complex was optimized to restrict the insulin diffusion from the delivery system by complex formation and thereby reducing initial burst release. Polymer concentration, insulin loading, chitosan and Zinc+2 addition were shown to affect the insulin release in vitro. Formulations containing insulin, zinc-insulin, and chitosan-insulin exhibited high initial burst (~7-14%), accompanied with a large secondary burst and incomplete release. Chitosan-zinc-insulin containing formulations showed extended release profiles of insulin for 84-90 …

In Vitro Detection Of Disease Biomarkers And Drug Contaminants, Erin Kathryn Nyren-Erickson Jan 2013

In Vitro Detection Of Disease Biomarkers And Drug Contaminants, Erin Kathryn Nyren-Erickson

Pharmacy

In recent years the rising cost and increased regulation within the U.S. healthcare system have caused medical laboratory tests to become more costly and more frequently required. As a result, insurance premiums are rising, and small independent laboratories are threatened with closure as their already narrow margins dwindle. Concurrently, there have been several incidents of contaminants and impurities in pharmaceutical drugs causing hundreds of deaths and thousands of illnesses. These challenges substantiate the need for simple and cost-effective screening tests for the presence of disease biomarkers, as well as for contaminants and impurities present in pharmaceutical drugs. The following disquisition …

[1] Few high‐latitude terrestrial records document the timing and nature of the Cenozoic “Greenhouse” to “Icehouse” transition. Here we exploit the bulk geochemistry of marine siliciclastic sediments from drill cores on Antarctica's continental margin to extract a unique semiquantitative temperature and precipitation record for Eocene to mid‐Miocene (~54–13 Ma). Alkaline elements are strongly enriched in the detrital mineral fraction in fine‐grained siliciclastic marine sediments and only occur as trace metals in the biogenic fraction. Hence, terrestrial climofunctions similar to the chemical index of alteration (CIA) can be applied to the alkaline major element geochemistry of marine sediments on continental margins …

Marked improvements in the sustainability of the horticulture industry have occurred over the last few decades. Movement towards better management practices in areas such as pesticide (IPM), fertilizer application and water usage characterizes today's industry. However, several obstacles have to be overcome for true long-term sustainability of the ornamental horticulture industry. One of these obstacles is the abundant use of plastics in the horticulture industry. This research focused on reducing the industry's plastic waste stream by evaluating the effects of biodegradable pots on plant growth parameters and substrate chemistry, as well as characteristics of biodegradable pots such as strength and …

Ukraine: A Nation Without Heroes, Geoffrey Vandrovec Jan 2013

Ukraine: A Nation Without Heroes, Geoffrey Vandrovec

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

Ukraine's creation of national heroes reflects the challenges of nation-building after the fall of the Soviet Union. Since its independence in 1991, Ukraine has attempted to "rehabilitate" controversial political figures into national heroes in order to create a united national history. Nations have always depended on symbols and perhaps one of the most important symbols is that of a national hero. A person who fought and possibly died fighting for a national cause can unite and inspire future generations while legitimizing the necessity of the state. Along with inspiring faith and courage, the focus on national heroes manifests norms, goals, …

Petroleum Exploration History In North Dakota To 1951, Clarence Anthony Herz Jan 2013

Petroleum Exploration History In North Dakota To 1951, Clarence Anthony Herz

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

The delayed discovery of oil in North Dakota resulted from remoteness, environment, and economic disadvantage, three of the six themes of Elwyn B. Robinson. Initially, lacking outside capital, the local explorers turned to their communities from 1917 to 1935 to raise the capital necessary to search for oil. As a result a complex group united to raise the capital necessary, but did not discover oil. The Great Depression ushered in the era of outside capital from 1937 to the successful discovery of oil on April 4, 1951. During this entire exploration period the state legislature, restricted by a lack of …

The Tides Of The Tourism Complex At La Paz, Mexico, Anthony Dutton Jan 2013

The Tides Of The Tourism Complex At La Paz, Mexico, Anthony Dutton

History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

By 1940, the outlying Mexican territory of Baja California Sur faced an uncertain future. The extractive industries of mining and pearling had collapsed in the southern areas of the peninsula, and the remaining economic activities of agriculture and fishing held little prospect for growing the population and fueling development. The solution adopted by local government, boosters, and the federal government was to promote international tourism. The rise of the tourism complex at La Paz represented a local response to the regional problems of economic underdevelopment and isolation, and its decline began with the intense federal involvement in funding the comprehensive …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The higher education systems throughout the continent of Africa are undergoing unprecedented challenges and are considered in crisis. African countries, including Ghana, all have in common ties to their colonial legacy whereby they are confronted with weak policies put in place by their colonizers. Having gained their independence, Africans should now take responsibility for the task of reforming their higher education system. To date, nothing substantial has been accomplished, with serious implications for weakening and damaging the structures of the foundation of their educational systems. This qualitative, single case study utilized a postcolonial theory-critical pedagogy framework, providing guidance for coming …

Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice

Reading Faculty Publications (Archived)

College students enrolled in a developmental reading program often do not perceive themselves as remedial readers, have low self-esteem about their abilities, or have a limited understanding about reading and therefore are unable to engage themselves with effective reading strategies. The challenge for educators in developmental college reading is to engage and motivate students with educational methods that create an awareness and understanding of reading by using strategies and practices appropriate for students’ diverse educational needs also necessary for their reading achievement. At the same time students need to develop the metacognitive awareness of their own knowledge of and use …

Finding Meaning In Misery: Can Stressful Situations Provide Meaning In Life?, Jacob Juhl

Psychology

Theory and research investigating the relationship between affective experiences and meaning in life have focused on how positive affect contributes to perceptions of meaning in life. No work has considered how people can attain meaning in life while experiencing negative affect. The present work tested whether affectively negative circumstances can provide meaning in life. Specifically, two studies, using distinct methodologies, tested whether people can attain meaning in life while experiencing the stress associated with goal-pursuit. In Study 1, the salience of stressful college-related goal-pursuit was experimentally heightened and then perceptions of goal-engagement, meaning in life, and positive and negative affect …

A Test Of An Interactive Model Of Binge Eating In Men, Allison Minnich Jan 2013

A Test Of An Interactive Model Of Binge Eating In Men, Allison Minnich

Psychology

Past research has shown that a combination of high perfectionism, high body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem is predictive of binge eating in college women (Bardone-Cone et al., 2006). The aim of the present study was to determine whether this triple interaction model was applicable to men. Male undergraduate college students from a Midwestern university (n=302) completed self-report measures online at two different time points. Analyses revealed a significant interaction between the three risk factors, such that high perfectionism, high body dissatisfaction, and low self-esteem at Time 1was predictive of greater Time 2 binge eating symptoms. However, the triple interaction was …

Social Norms' Influence On Gendered Behaviors, Elizabeth Ewing Lee Jan 2013

Social Norms' Influence On Gendered Behaviors, Elizabeth Ewing Lee

Psychology

Individual variability in engagement in gendered behavior is primarily assumed to be the result of variability in gender roles (i.e., femininity, masculinity; Bem, 1981). However, contextual factors have also been shown to influence behaving in gendered ways (Leszczynski & Strough, 2008; Pickard & Strough, 2003). The current studies sought to explore engagement in gendered behaviors by examining the influence of social norms on gendered behaviors, as well as how those perceptions interact with gender self-concepts (i.e., gendered contingencies of selfworth, self-efficacy for behaving in gendered ways, similarity to others of one's sex) to influence engagement in gendered behaviors. Two studies …

Characterization Of Sensitivity Of Sclerotinia Sclerotiorum Isolates From North Central U.S. To Thiophanate-Methyl And Metconazole, Gazala Ameen

Plant Pathology

Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (Lib.) de Bary causes Sclerotinia stem rot on canola and many other crops of economic importance in the U.S. SSR is primarily controlled with fungicides applied at flowering time. Most fungicides currently used to control SSR can promote resistance buildup in their target populations making monitoring of sensitivity important. In this study the reaction of S. sclerotiorum to thiophanate-methyl (TM) and metconazole (MTZ) was characterized. Samples collected in several states of north central U.S. were used. Three and ten isolates were considered to be moderately insensitive to TM and MTZ, respectively. Greenhouse trials indicated, however, that diseases caused …
