Predator Recognition In Rainbowfish, Melanotaenia Duboulayi, Embryos, Lois J. Oulton, Vivian Haviland, Culum Brown

Aquaculture Collection

Exposure to olfactory cues during embryonic development can have long term impacts on birds and amphibians behaviour. Despite the vast literature on predator recognition and responses in fishes, few researchers have determined how fish embryos respond to predator cues. Here we exposed four-day-old rainbowfish (Melanotaenia duboulayi) embryos to cues emanating from a novel predator, a native predator and injured conspecifics. Their response was assessed by monitoring heart rate and hatch time. Results showed that embryos have an innate capacity to differentiate between cues as illustrated by faster heart rates relative to controls. The greatest increase in heart rate occurred in …

Introduction: Web-based lifestyle counselling designed to improve adherence to self-management behaviours for diet, exercise and medication has been shown to reduce blood pressure (BP). However, the long-term clinical outcome of these interventions is not established. Our aim was to establish whether an e-counselling program is independently associated with improved clinical outcomes over a 12-month period, as defined by the following criteria: (1) reduction of systolic BP, diastolic BP, pulse pressure and associated risk factors for cardiovascular events; and (2) adherence to self-management behaviour (diet, exercise, smoke-free living and prescribed medication). Methods and analysis: Reducing risk with e-based support for adherence …

Effects Of Harmony And Dissonance With Two-Tone Narrow And Wide Range Frequencies On Auditory Evoked Potentials, Richard J. Mcmurtrey, Dr. Donovan Fleming, Scott Steffensen Oct 2013

Effects Of Harmony And Dissonance With Two-Tone Narrow And Wide Range Frequencies On Auditory Evoked Potentials, Richard J. Mcmurtrey, Dr. Donovan Fleming, Scott Steffensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The purpose of this research was to explore the mechanisms of how the brain is able to distinguish harmony and dissonance. The understanding of how sound is converted to neural messages began with Békésy, who discovered how sound is transduced in the cochlea. Later it was found that each auditory neural fiber, which carried the messages for a specific frequency of sound, corresponded to a specific place in the primary auditory cortex (referred to as “tonotopic”). In this experiment, the neural activity of the auditory cortex (T4) and of the sensory cortex (CZ) was recorded in response to specific auditory …

Non-Invasive Sensor And Method For The Continuous Detection Of Abnormal Intracranial Pressure And Brain Compliance, Jotham Manwaring, Coray Mcclellan, Dr. Erin Bigler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Children diagnosed with hydrocephalus, or patients suffering from head trauma require treatment by a neurosurgeon and a neurologist. Hydrocephalus is a condition in which the patient has retained too much cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) by either over production, or inability to shunt off old fluid. Since the cranium, effectively a closed boxed around the brain, is rigid, an increase in CSF causes an increase in the amount of pressure the brain experiences. Patients suffering from trauma also experience increased intracranial pressure (ICP) but by a different mechanism; trauma causes the brain itself to swell and push against the cranium. One …

Daily Coping Responses Of Children Who Have A Sibling With A Disability, Shannon Wright Martino, Dr. Susanne Olsen Oct 2013

Daily Coping Responses Of Children Who Have A Sibling With A Disability, Shannon Wright Martino, Dr. Susanne Olsen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

A child with a disability may be a unique stressor to all members of the family. For years, researchers have focused on the parents and the child with a disability in the family. However, fewer studies have specifically focused on typically developing siblings of children with disabilities. Therefore, to extend previous research, the purpose of this study was to examine the coping styles used by siblings in families where there is a child with a disability. Medical and practical improvements have increased the lifespan of disabled children and the amount of time they spend at home. Because of this, siblings …

Unplanned Readmission After Total Joint Arthroplasty: Rates, Reasons, And Risk Factors., Benjamin Zmistowski, Camilo Restrepo, Jordan Hess, Darius Adibi, Soltan Cangoz, Javad Parvizi Oct 2013

Unplanned Readmission After Total Joint Arthroplasty: Rates, Reasons, And Risk Factors., Benjamin Zmistowski, Camilo Restrepo, Jordan Hess, Darius Adibi, Soltan Cangoz, Javad Parvizi

Rothman Institute Papers

BACKGROUND: There has been a major and alarming increase in readmission rates following total joint arthroplasty. With proposed changes in reimbursement policy, increased rates of unplanned readmission following arthroplasty will penalize providers. In particular, it has been proposed that specific complications-so-called "zero-tolerance" complications-are unacceptable and that their treatment will not qualify for reimbursement. The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence, causes, and risk factors for readmission following total joint arthroplasty.

METHODS: An institutional arthroplasty database was utilized to identify those patients undergoing total knee or hip arthroplasty from January 2004 through December 2008. A total of 10,633 …

Factors Relating To Romantic Relationship Experiences For Emerging Adults, Sabra Elyse Johnson Oct 2013

Factors Relating To Romantic Relationship Experiences For Emerging Adults, Sabra Elyse Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

This study of 1,492 emerging adults focuses on the relationships among negative family of origin experiences, attitudes about marriage, positive communication and the influence of past romantic relationships. The data used in this study comes from a survey questionnaire, READY (see www.relate-institute.org) completed by emerging adult participants (18-25). Results from the Structural Equation Model showed both aversive family of origin experiences and negative beliefs about marriage have a significant and negative influence on perceptions of romantic relationship experiences. Also, positive communication has a significant and positive influence on perceptions of past romantic relationships. However, positive communication did not mediate the …

Measuring Phonetic Convergence In Speech Production, Jennifer S. Pardo Oct 2013

Measuring Phonetic Convergence In Speech Production, Jennifer S. Pardo

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Phonetic convergence is defined as an increase in the similarity of acoustic-phonetic form between talkers. Previous research has demonstrated phonetic convergence both when a talker listens passively to speech and while talkers engage in social interaction. Much of this research has focused on a diverse array of acoustic-phonetic attributes, with fewer studies incorporating perceptual measures of phonetic convergence. The current paper reviews research on phonetic convergence in both non-interactive and conversational settings, and attempts to consolidate the diverse array of findings by proposing a paradigm that models perceptual and acoustic measures together. By modeling acoustic measures as predictors of perceived …

The Development Of A Discipline: Examination Of The Profession Of Gerontology And Gerontological Professionals, Tracey Gendron Oct 2013

The Development Of A Discipline: Examination Of The Profession Of Gerontology And Gerontological Professionals, Tracey Gendron

Theses and Dissertations

The growth of the aging population has warranted increased training and education to prepare professionals with the specific knowledge needed to best serve older adults. Gerontology, as an academic discipline, provides professionals with the conceptual knowledge and the skills necessary to address the complexities of working with a diverse aging population. Little research has been done of the characteristics of professionals both with and without formal education in gerontology that are working with the aging population. The aim of this study was to investigate the roles of career motivation, job satisfaction, attitudes about aging, career commitment, and professional identity among …

The Social Compass Curriculum (SCC) was investigated for its effectiveness in improving core social skills in three descriptive case studies of students with autism. Treatment fidelity of the SCC was also measured in the school setting. The Social Responsiveness Scale and the Autism Social Skills Profile were completed by parents to measure pre- and postintervention social skills for three students aged 8 to 11 years who participated in the present multisite pilot study. Fidelity of implementation data were collected via a checklist during observations for three educators who implemented the intervention. Results indicate that the SCC improved core social deficits …

Institutional Governance Of New Program Development At Public Research Universities, Nathan Brad Miller Oct 2013

Institutional Governance Of New Program Development At Public Research Universities, Nathan Brad Miller

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Central university administration is often involved with guiding new programs through university and state approvals. A number of factors affect these processes. No studies discuss the role of central administrators in program approvals, however. This study addresses the gap through interviews with 13 individuals responsible for new program approvals in the provost’s office of 12 Research University/Very High public institutions. Five primary themes emerged in the interviews. The themes were used to frame discussion on the purpose, barriers, and self-described roles of the participants. Partial findings from this research were reported in Miller (2013).

Masculinity: The Unseen Barrier In Survivor Assistance, Anne-Sophie Duprat, Lusia Pecak

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Survivors of landmine and explosive remnants of war (ERW) incidents suffer unique consequences from their injuries as a result of their age and gender. As they often have distinct societal roles, survivor assistance needs for women, girls, boys and men differ. Inadequate research on the effects of mine/ERW incidents on men and boys may hinder recovery for male survivors and their families and communities.

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

When using animals for the detection of landmines, handlers face challenges of when to reinforce indication responses, as the actual location of landmines in the field is unknown.Anti-Persoonsmijnen Ontmijnende Product Ontwikkeling(Anti-Personnel Landmine Detection Product Development or APOPO) evaluated an inexpensive method to reinforce rat-indication responses in field settings using TNT to contaminate ground area. Rat detection accuracy was high over the TNT contamination after an overnight soak period of 16 hours and detection accuracy decreased as a function of days passed since soaking.
