E-Learning Tools For Andragogy: A Scale Model Of Technology-Based Active Learning, Ying Wang, Kai S. Koong, Jun Sun Oct 2013

E-Learning Tools For Andragogy: A Scale Model Of Technology-Based Active Learning, Ying Wang, Kai S. Koong, Jun Sun

Information Systems Faculty Publications

Andragogy is an educational philosophy on how to facilitate active learning for adult students. It requires instructors to engage students in various learning activities, including problem solving, essay writing, discussions, group projects, and so on. The challenge is how to facilitate student participation and assess learning outcomes. The emergence of e-learning tools, such as Discussion Board, Wiki, Blogs, and Wimba provide technical support for the new learning approach. Based on the review of information systems and education literature, this study develops a taxonomy of e-learning tools. In particular, it proposes a scale model based on the premise that e-learning tools …

Signal Processing Of Electroencephalogram For The Detection Of Attentiveness Towards Short Training Videos, Paul Nussbaum Oct 2013

Signal Processing Of Electroencephalogram For The Detection Of Attentiveness Towards Short Training Videos, Paul Nussbaum

Theses and Dissertations

This research has developed a novel method which uses an easy to deploy single dry electrode wireless electroencephalogram (EEG) collection device as an input to an automated system that measures indicators of a participant’s attentiveness while they are watching a short training video. The results are promising, including 85% or better accuracy in identifying whether a participant is watching a segment of video from a boring scene or lecture, versus a segment of video from an attentiveness inducing active lesson or memory quiz. In addition, the final system produces an ensemble average of attentiveness across many participants, pinpointing areas in …

The Influence Of Technology On Family Dynamics, Alessondra Villegas Oct 2013

The Influence Of Technology On Family Dynamics, Alessondra Villegas

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

A powerful tool, that contemporary society uses not only to entertain but also to communicate and educate, there is an ever-present availability to media access. However, there is an ongoing debate over whether or not the power of this influence and its ubiquitous availability yields positive or negative consequences in different aspects of our lives. One area of concern, in particular, is the dynamics of the American family. With the rapid progression of technological advances it is difficult to observe the influence that these devices are having on the ways in which a family interacts. There is research to support …

“Their Image Of Me”: A Phenomenological Study Of Professional Dress Choices Of Female Professors, Laura Abbasi Oct 2013

“Their Image Of Me”: A Phenomenological Study Of Professional Dress Choices Of Female Professors, Laura Abbasi

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

In recent years, scholarly attention to professional dress as a form of nonverbal communication has faded into the background. However, I believe professional dress is an important area of study, considering the changing conditions in the world of work. Therefore, I decided to conduct this phenomenological study of the dress choices of female professors at a small, liberal arts college to discover what professional dress did for them internally and professionally. The analysis of the data suggests that these women try to use dress to represent themselves as who they are internally, without losing sight of their image as a …

Keynote: The Transmission Of Information: An “Awful Deformation” Of What Communication Really Is – John Shotter, John Shotter

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

It is easy to think of communication as being primarily to do with the transmission of information, with the communication of facts, of intelligence, of things people want to know about—a view given scientific expression long ago by Shannon and Weaver (1949). The taken-for-granted background to this view being the Cartesian assumptions of a mechanical world of separate, identifiable, interacting entities in motion according to discoverable laws. Everything changes, however, once we switch to a view of communication as occurring within a ceaseless, indivisible flow of entwined strands of spontaneously responsive, expressive, living, bodily activity—a view adopted by all those …

Keynote: Fast Media/Media Fast – Tom Cooper, Tom Cooper Oct 2013

Keynote: Fast Media/Media Fast – Tom Cooper, Tom Cooper

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

This Keynote address was delivered at the 70th annual New York State Communication Association Conference on October 12, 2012. Dr. Cooper showcases an overview of some of the highlights in the history of media ethics research and key conclaves. His “overview of overviews” will lead to an examination of the epistemology and ecology of an important overview topic in the field – media saturation. Just as Thoreau went to Walden to gain a perspective on the environment of his day, Dr. Cooper conducted a “media fast” to examine the media environment of the 1980s and has been taking his classes …

Degeneracy And Long-Range Correlations, D. Delignières, Vivien Marmelat Oct 2013

Degeneracy And Long-Range Correlations, D. Delignières, Vivien Marmelat

Journal Articles

Degeneracy is a ubiquitous property of complex adaptive systems, which refers to the ability of structurally different components to perform the same function in some conditions and different functions in other conditions. Here, we suppose a causal link between the level of degeneracy in the system and the strength of long-range correlations in its behavior. In a numerical experiment, we manipulated degeneracy through the number of networks available in a model composed of a chain of correlated networks over which a series of random jumps are performed. Results showed that correlations in the outcome series increased with the number of …

When School Is Not In Session: How Student Drug Testing Can Transform Parenting, Amanda R. Lamberson

Touro Law Review

This comment focuses on a growing trend in today's schools: requiring drug tests. A focus is given both to the judiciary's role in this matter and the Legislature's passage of New York Education Law section 912-a, 10 which regulates student drug testing and urine analysis.

The Effects Of Computer Mediated Communication On Computer-Based Training, Mark A. Revels Oct 2013

The Effects Of Computer Mediated Communication On Computer-Based Training, Mark A. Revels

Journal of Executive Education

Student performance using computer-based training (CBT) may be related to the degree of interaction that occurs between students and the instructor, or between students and each other. This is significant in that the individualized nature of CBT (and perhaps Web-based training) is contrary to the social interaction needs of students. Using relevant pedagogical and social communication theories as a basis, this study employed empirical research methods on undergraduate participants to achieve the following objectives: to explore the use of computer mediated communication (CMC) as a surrogate for face-to-face interaction with CBT students, and to provide research-based recommendations for human resource …

Listening Design: A New Methodology For Design And Innovation Processes, Rosanna Veneziano, Patrizia Ranzo, Giulia Scalera, Mara Rossi

Learn X Design Conference Series

The aim of the paper is to describe a design methodology in the area of innovation design highlighting the importance of sharing strategies, methods and listening practices to be implemented at specific stages in the project's development. The ability of creative systems to generate product or process innovation and to integrate creativity and know-how in the products is the necessary condition to promote design activities and the following competitive dynamics able to meet the needs of the ever-changing world of consumption. The presence of universities, defined as “engines of innovation” (Florida et al. 2002), in complex production territories can establish …

"Where Angels Fear To Tread": Cemetery Preservation Efforts By The Massachusetts Historical Commission, Edward L. Bell Oct 2013

"Where Angels Fear To Tread": Cemetery Preservation Efforts By The Massachusetts Historical Commission, Edward L. Bell

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Professional archaeologists assist in the preservation of historical cemeteries that may be impacted by private or public projects. While historical cememtery preservation efforts in Massachusetts are strong, current laws are not effective in compelling archaeological intervention in all cases. Despite the problematic legal situation, the Massachusetts Historical Commission (MHC) has successfully advocated for preservation standards. In the case of the Harwich United Methodist Church (HUMC) Expansion Project, however, the proponents were unable and unwilling to comply fully with MHC's recommendations to mitigate unavoidable impacts to graves through systematic archaeological data recovery. Archaeological survey identified both marked and unmarked graves in …
