The Material Culture Of Migrant Life At The U.S./México Border, Consuelo Helen Cano Crow Aug 2013

The Material Culture Of Migrant Life At The U.S./México Border, Consuelo Helen Cano Crow

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Material culture is the aggregate of physical objects or artifacts used by or discarded by a past culture or society. Contemporary unauthorized migration at the U.S./México border has left thousands of pounds of migrant goods in what are referred to by United States Border Patrol as "lay-up sites". Since the late 1990's, undocumented migrants attempting to cross the Sonoran Desert of Arizona have been exposed to a distinctive set of material culture. This rapidly-evolving material culture is specific to the phenomenon of border-crossing, and it reflects and shapes the experience of migrants attempting the crossing. Migrants Stations, also known as …

Exploring Tacit Knowledge In Organizations, Andrea Plazas

HIM 1990-2015

There has been a growing prevalent interest to explore the role of knowledge in organizations. Bhardwaj and Monin (2006) identified the knowledge of individuals' as a valuable source of competitive advantage. An organizations well-rounded institutional memory- the organizations collective experiences (Rothwell & Poduch, 2004), fosters competitive advantage. There is a prevailing need to scrutinize the role of tacit knowledge in organizations and how it's hard to articulate nature makes it difficult for organizations to acquire and preserve institutional memory value. The aim of this review is to illustrate that tacit knowledge contributes significantly to the institutional memory value, expansion and …

Open Source Software Development Process Model – A Grounded Theory Approach, Keng Siau, Y. Tian

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The open source movement has provided software users with more choices, lower software acquisition cost, more flexible software customization, and possibly higher quality software product. Although the development of open source software is dynamic and it encourages innovations, the process can be chaotic. An Open Source Software Development (OSSD) process model to enhance the survivability of OSSD projects is needed. This research uses the grounded theory approach to derive a Phase-Role-Skill-Responsibility (PRSR) OSSD process model. The three OSSD process phases -- Launch Stage, Before the First Release, and Between Releases -- address the characteristics of the OSSD process as well …

Unveiling A Path To Head Start Turnaround: Investigating How Head Start Directors Transform Low-Performing Programs Into High-Performing Programs, Seanelle Tracy Aug 2013

Unveiling A Path To Head Start Turnaround: Investigating How Head Start Directors Transform Low-Performing Programs Into High-Performing Programs, Seanelle Tracy

Education Doctoral

The 2009 Report to Congress on Head Start Monitoring indicated that Head Start grantee non-compliance findings have increased since 2008, implying that grantee non-compliance is an issue for the Head Start field. The poor performance of grantees during Federal Monitoring Reviews demonstrates the critical need to investigate turnaround practices of Head Start directors who have successfully improved their low-performing programs to high-performing in compliance with the Head Start Performance Standards (HSPS) and successfully achieved a Federal Monitoring Review with no findings. The investigation of Head Start turnaround practices is not reflected in the current literature. However, business and K-12 settings …

Understanding User Resistance To Information Technology: Toward A Comprehensive Model In Health Information Technology, Madison N. Ngafeeson Aug 2013

Understanding User Resistance To Information Technology: Toward A Comprehensive Model In Health Information Technology, Madison N. Ngafeeson

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

The successful implementation of health information systems is expected to increase legibility, reduce medical errors, boost the quality of healthcare and shrink costs. Yet, evidence points to the fact that healthcare professionals resist the full use of these systems. Physicians and nurses have been reported to resist the system. Even though resistance to technology has always been identified as key issue in the successful implementation of information technology, the subject remains largely under-theorized and deficient of empirical testing. Only two proposed model have been tested so far. Hence, though user resistance is clearly identified and defined in literature, not very …

Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering

With the advent of the new security measures, today’s airports have become increasingly complex and congested. Air and passenger traffic continues to increase; consequently, the need for intelligent design concepts is required. Unlike all other existing airport designs that focused exclusively on operational performance, this study focused on the development of a new airport terminal design methodology that takes a proactive approach to minimizing the effects of security disruptions while simultaneously maximizing operational performance and passenger flow. The study addressed the impact of security operations on both the design of airport facilities and passenger flows, and discussed options and scenarios …

Learning To Adapt: Online Social Science Instruction In Higher Education, Patrick Steven Smith Jul 2013

Learning To Adapt: Online Social Science Instruction In Higher Education, Patrick Steven Smith

Dissertations and Theses

Online learning is a rapidly growing phenomenon in post-secondary education. Institutions of higher learning have embraced online learning for its perceived merits, but without the consideration of how instructors deal with this different learning medium. Little is known of the extent to which different disciplines are suited to the online medium; this is pertinent to disciplines that rely on spontaneous in-person discussion. Furthermore, as colleges continue to invest heavily in online learning, instructors who only possess face-to-face teaching experience may begin teaching online. This poses a pedagogical challenge for instructors who are unfamiliar with the medium. This qualitative, in-depth interview …

Using Work System Theory To Link Managerial And Technical Perspectives On Bpm, Steven Alter Jul 2013

Using Work System Theory To Link Managerial And Technical Perspectives On Bpm, Steven Alter

Business Analytics and Information Systems

Work system theory (WST) provides a bridge between managerial and technical perspectives on BPM that often seem distant from each other. In combination, the work system framework, underlying work system metamodel, and the work system life cycle model provide a number of bridges between those perspectives. In relation to managerial BPM, the work system framework treats "business process" as one of nine elements in a basic understanding of a work system. The others are participants, information, technology, products/services, customers, environment, infrastructure, and strategies. The underlying metamodel outlines a precise structure for analysis and design of work systems and for links …

Aesthetic Experience And Design Expertise, Anders Haug Jul 2013

Aesthetic Experience And Design Expertise, Anders Haug

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

An important part of design expertise is the ability to design objects that produce aesthetic affection. To shed light on the relationship between design expertise and aesthetic experience, this paper proposes a model of how aesthetic preferences are developed and understood. The model is derived by using a distinction between conscious and subconscious mental processes, which produces the four processes of "affection," "attention," "reflection" and "internalization." These processes can be seen as occurring in cycles, during which aesthetic preferences and understandings of such develop. Since the cycle of four processes only represents an idealized perspective of reality, possible deviations and …

Generating Space To Articulate The Value Of An Artists’ Practice, Helen Smith Jul 2013

Generating Space To Articulate The Value Of An Artists’ Practice, Helen Smith

Experiential Knowledge (EKSIG) Conference Series

The expertise of the artist, as a relational and social practice, is unstated in the sense that it is present but not articulated. Donald A. Schön’s structure for the making of generative metaphor offers a theoretical and analytical framework for movement from the tacit into the explicit. “FOLD” is an art-work at the centre of this enquiry. It is the subject through which Schön’s framework is tested to reveal new ways of valuing an artist’s expertise. This project is part of a doctoral programme between Gray’s School of Art and Woodend Barn arts centre, Banchory, Aberdeenshire. The author is the …

Resources, Power, And Fields In Institutional Change And Reproduction, Rachida Aissaoui Jul 2013

Resources, Power, And Fields In Institutional Change And Reproduction, Rachida Aissaoui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

While institutional theory constitutes a useful lens to explain how change happens, some of its key concepts, such as power, resources, and fields, are more often assumed than directly investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation was to examine these three concepts during processes of institutional change and reproduction. I did so by analyzing the dynamics of change in two school systems, Memphis City Schools and Shelby County Schools, located in Shelby County, Tennessee. These two school systems had been maintained separate from the mid-1850s until 2010 when they began a highly contentious merger process. The first study examined the …
