Community Health Sciences
Background: Body weight and its perception play an important role in the physical and mental well-being of a person. Weight perception is found to be a better predictor of weight management behaviour as compared to actual weight. In Pakistan, studies have been done on the prevalence of weight status but weight perception is still unexplored. The study was done to examine relationships between body weight perception, actual weight status, and weight control behaviour among the female university students of Karachi.
Methods: A cross sectional study was carried out during Sep-Nov 2009 on female students in four universities of Karachi, Pakistan. …
Sleep Duration And Breast Cancer Phenotype, Ali Khawaja, Santosh Rao, Li Li, Cheryl L. Thompson
Sleep Duration And Breast Cancer Phenotype, Ali Khawaja, Santosh Rao, Li Li, Cheryl L. Thompson
Medical College Documents
Emerging evidence suggests that short sleep is associated with an increased risk of cancer; however, little has been done to study the role of sleep on tumor characteristics. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between sleep duration and tumor phenotype in 972 breast cancer patients. Sleep duration was inversely associated with tumor grade (univariate P = 0.032), particularly in postmenopausal women (univariate P = 0.018). This association did not reach statistical significance after adjustments for age, race, body mass index, hormone replacement therapy use, alcohol consumption, smoking, and physical activity in the entire study sample (P = 0.052), but …
Windsor Products: Equal Protection From Animus, Dale Carpenter
Windsor Products: Equal Protection From Animus, Dale Carpenter
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
The Supreme Court's opinion in United States v. Windsor has puzzled commentators, who have tended to overlook or dismiss its ultimate conclusion that the Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional because it arose from animus. What we have in Justice Kennedy’s opinion is Windsor Products — an outpouring of decades of constitutional development whose fountainhead is Carolene Products and whose tributaries are the gay-rights and federalism streams. This paper presents the constitutional anti-animus principle, including what constitutes animus, why it offends the Constitution, and how the Supreme Court determines it is present. The paper also discusses why the Court was …

Background: Our purpose was to develop and test a predictive model of the acute glucose response to exercise in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Design and methods: Data from three previous exercise studies (56 subjects, 488 exercise sessions) were combined and used as a development dataset. A mixed-effects Least Absolute Shrinkage Selection Operator (LASSO) was used to select predictors among 12 potential predictors. Tests of the relative importance of each predictor were conducted using the Lindemann Merenda and Gold (LMG) algorithm. Model structure was tested using likelihood ratio tests. Model accuracy in the development dataset was assessed by leave-one-out cross-validation. …
Impacts Of Land Cover Changes On Ecosystem Services Delivery In The Black Hills Ecoregion From 1950 To 2010, Suzanne Cotillon
Impacts Of Land Cover Changes On Ecosystem Services Delivery In The Black Hills Ecoregion From 1950 To 2010, Suzanne Cotillon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Environmental degradation generated by land use choices and human activities is the first driver of change in the provision of ecosystem goods and services. One of the challenges in ecosystem services research is to evaluate the contribution of each land cover unit to ecosystem services delivery while considering multiple services. In this thesis, I develop a framework to assess the capacity of many land covers to independently produce ecosystem services (i.e., potential production) and the capacity of the whole landscape to deliver multiple services to the population (i.e., potential supply). In the first part, this methodology is used to report …

Of Fur And Fins: Quantifying Fur Trade Era Fish Harvest To Assess Changes In Contemporary Lake Whitefish (Coregonus Clupeaformis) Production At Lac La Biche, Alberta, Andrea M. Mcgregor
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
The history of fisheries exploitation in Canada has significant ties to the development and westward expansion of the fur trade. Understanding the scale and nature of this relationship is important when assessing the developmental or evolutionary history of a system. This study uses estimates of human population size and subsistence lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) consumption to estimate annual fish harvest at Lac la Biche, Alberta(54o52'N, 112o05'W) during the fur trade era and to assess the magnitude and potential influence of historic harvest on contemporary harvest potential. Historic (1800-1911) lake whitefish harvest increased approximately 10-fold, from 74,000 kg in 1800 to …

Biology And Ecology Of Glyphosate-Resistant Giant Ragweed, Kabelo Segobye
Biology And Ecology Of Glyphosate-Resistant Giant Ragweed, Kabelo Segobye
Open Access Theses
Giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) is a competitive annual plant found in disturbed landscapes and is the most troublesome weed in Indiana and the US Corn Belt. It is one of the most common and problematic weeds in corn and soybean production. The introduction of herbicide glyphosate, N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine in early 1970's provided farmers with a better and low-cost tool to control weeds. The use of glyphosate drastically increased after the development of glyphosate resistant agronomic crops in 1996 and was use as a post-emergence selective herbicide. This led to overreliance and repeated use of glyphosate for weed control especially …

Novel Ribosome Biogenesis In The Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, Melissa Lynn Hargreaves
Novel Ribosome Biogenesis In The Lyme Disease Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, Melissa Lynn Hargreaves
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Here we demonstrate the first characterization of an RNase III enzyme from a spirochete and its role in processing rRNA transcripts from the unusual rRNA gene operons of Borrelia burgdorferi. In most bacteria, the three rRNA transcripts (16S, 23S, and 5S rRNAs) that form the ribosome are produced as a single transcript from an operon with minimal spacing between genes. In the B. burgdorferi genome, however, a single 16S rRNA gene is encoded more than 3 kb from the bicistronic 23S-5S rRNA operons. The 23S-5S operons are tandemly duplicated, yielding an uneven number of rRNA genes, a feature unique to …

The Effects Of Temperature On Fungal Symbionts In The Mountain Pine Beetle-Fungus Multi-Partite Symbiosis, Melissa Lea Moore
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The mountain pine beetle is an economically and ecologically important insect in western North American forests capable of killing millions of trees during outbreaks. This beetle depends on two fungi, Grosmannia clavigera and Ophiostoma montium, to provide the nutrients required for the beetle to develop and reproduce. Competition between these two fungal associates is expected because they use similar resources. Strong competition should lead to the eventual destabilization of the three-way symbiosis and fixation for the most competitive fungus. However, strong direct competition has not been observed, indicating that some mechanism likely allows the two fungi to coexist in a …
Interactions Between Arenavirus Proteins And Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Infection, Emily L. Messina
Interactions Between Arenavirus Proteins And Small Molecule Inhibitors Of Infection, Emily L. Messina
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Arenaviruses are globally distributed, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA viruses which persist in specific rodent host species. Of the 32 known arenaviruses, 10 have been associated with human disease. Of these, Lassa, Junín, Machupo, Guanarito, and Sabia viruses cause severe hemorrhagic fevers. The only current option for the treatment of arenavirus infection is the off-label use of ribavirin. However, ribavirin is associated with severe side effects. Clearly, there exists a need for the study of arenavirus biology and of novel drugs for the treatment of arenaviral infection. My work focused on two attractive targets for inhibition of infection: the arenaviral RNA-dependent RNA …

Assessing Safety Culture Within A Flight Training Organization, David Freiwald, Carolina Lenz-Anderson, Erik Baker
Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach
This study was prompted by a string of aircraft hull losses experienced by a multinational, multi-campus flight training organization. A mixed methods study was conducted to study the attitudes and perceptions of the operations and management staff at this flight training organization through the use of a survey instrument previously existing and adapted, in order to ensure validity, and interviews with key staff members. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to identify underlying constructs in the perceptions and attitudes of the staff in order to identify beliefs that may signify a flight training organization is at risk. An analysis was conducted …
The Case To Accredit Homeland Security Programs: Why Outcomes-Based Accreditation Makes Sense, James D. Ramsay
The Case To Accredit Homeland Security Programs: Why Outcomes-Based Accreditation Makes Sense, James D. Ramsay
Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach
The following essay lays out an argument for program level accreditation in academic homeland security (HS) programs. Admittedly, neither the practice nor the educational components of the HS discipline are standardized. Indeed, a recent analysis by the Congressional Research Service indicates that there remain several operational definitions of HS in practice. Regardless, this paper provides rationale which argues that after roughly eight years, academic HS has developed enough to be able to identify and support a distinct set of student learning outcomes— knowledge, skills and attitudes—that can both characterize and define the discipline.
Generally, program level academic accreditation requires a …

Insertional mutagenesis is a powerful tool for determining gene function in both model and crop plant species. Tnt1, the transposable element of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) cell type 1, is a retrotransposon that replicates via an RNA copy that is reverse transcribed and integrated elsewhere in the plant genome. Based on studies in a variety of plants, Tnt1 appears to be inactive in normal plant tissue but can be reactivated by tissue culture. Our goal was to evaluate the utility of the Tnt1 retrotransposon as a mutagenesis strategy in soybean (Glycine max). Experiments showed that the …

Multifactorial Modulation Of The Blood-Brain Barrier: Relationship To Stroke, Bei Zhang
Multifactorial Modulation Of The Blood-Brain Barrier: Relationship To Stroke, Bei Zhang
Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences
The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a dynamic interface, mainly consisting of highly specialized brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) that segregate the central nervous system (CNS) from the peripheral circulation. Impairment of the BBB, due to disruption of tight junction (TJ) proteins and inflammatory responses, may initiate and/or contribute to the progress of CNS disorders, including stroke. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide. It has been shown that aging and environmental pollutants can induce brain endothelium dysfunction, and are considered as risk factors for stroke.
Deficiency of telomerase is highly linked with aging-associated vascular diseases. Evidence indicates that …
Polychlorinated Biphenyl Ligands Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Promote Adipocyte-Mediated Diabetes, Nicki A. Baker
Polychlorinated Biphenyl Ligands Of The Aryl Hydrocarbon Receptor Promote Adipocyte-Mediated Diabetes, Nicki A. Baker
Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences
Numerous epidemiology studies suggest a correlation between exposures to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and the development and severity of type 2 diabetes (T2D); however, mechanisms remain largely unknown. Previous studies demonstrated that PCBs that are ligands of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) promote the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), that are linked to insulin resistance in adipocytes. To explore potential mechanisms linking PCB exposures to diabetes, we developed a mouse model of glucose and insulin intolerance induced by acute and chronic exposures to PCB-77. We hypothesized that PCB ligands of AhR result in adipocyte-specific elevations in TNF-α …
Coplanar Pcb-Induced Inflammation And Dietary Interventions, Katryn Elizabeth Eske
Coplanar Pcb-Induced Inflammation And Dietary Interventions, Katryn Elizabeth Eske
Theses and Dissertations--Nutritional Sciences
Diseases, such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), are linked to chronic low levels of inflammation. This inflamed state is the product of risk factors including exposure to environmental pollutants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are correlated with increased risk for CVD and diabetes. In response to this health risk, our research addresses the mechanisms by which coplanar PCBs elicit an inflammatory response and the mitigation of PCB-induced inflammation through dietary intervention using docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 lipid. Investigators from the University of Kentucky Engineering Department are developing remediation technologies that detoxify PCBs through dechlorination. We studied the cellular toxicity …
