Neurology

The last 30 years have seen a major advance in the understanding of the clinical and pathological heterogeneity of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and its overlap with frontotemporal dementia. Multiple, seemingly disparate biochemical pathways converge on a common clinical syndrome characterized by progressive loss of upper and lower motor neurons. Pathogenic themes in ALS include excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, altered energy metabolism, and most recently RNA mis-processing. The transgenic rodent, overexpressing mutant superoxide dismutase-1, is now only one of several models of ALS pathogenesis. The nematode, fruit fly and zebrafish all offer fresh insight, and the development of …

The Future Of The Commodity Futures Market: How Customer Segregated Accounts Can Be Better Protected From Insolvent Futures Commission Merchants, 2 J. Marshall Global Mkt. L.J. 13 (2013), Zachary Brumfield

John Marshall Global Markets Law Journal

Two of the largest futures commission merchants (“FMCs”)—MF Global and Peregrine Financial Group—filed for bankruptcy in 2011 and 2012, respectively. The bankruptcies of two of the largest players in the futures commodity market shook up the industry. Many customers became weary and distrustful of FCMs. This Article proposes solutions in order to boost customer confidence in the futures market without deterring the largest futures traders. Further, this Article discusses the pitfalls of the current regulatory model with respect to customer segregated funds and the necessary changes to the current regime by the CFTC and other self-regulatory organizations. After the MF …

The Search For "Strong Medicine": Pathways To Healthcare Development In Remote Nepal Using Gis, Catherine Lee Sanders, Kimber Haddix Mckay Jan 2013

The Search For "Strong Medicine": Pathways To Healthcare Development In Remote Nepal Using Gis, Catherine Lee Sanders, Kimber Haddix Mckay

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Nepalese agropastoralists’ confrontations with forces of change in the last generation have altered villagers’ abilities to gain access to health services, clean water, and nutrition in Humla District, Nepal. Development efforts and Nepal’s recent armed conflict, in particular, introduced novel technologies and ideologies that a subsection of villagers have responded to in a fashion that we did not expect. In this article, based on theories about the diffusion of innovation and risk, we argue that, together, villagers and other change agents have cocreated new contexts of vulnerability in the postconflict setting of rural Nepal, as observed in remote Humla District. …

Determining The Motivation Of Childcare Providers To Implement Instructional Gardens As A Means Of Increasing Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Children Ages 2 Through 5, Kristin Leslie Davis Jan 2013

Determining The Motivation Of Childcare Providers To Implement Instructional Gardens As A Means Of Increasing Fruit And Vegetable Consumption Among Children Ages 2 Through 5, Kristin Leslie Davis

Nutrition Science and Dietetics - Theses

The issue of childhood obesity has been gaining an increasing amount of attention in recent decades due to sharp rises in prevalence. Efforts to encourage fruit and vegetable consumption among children through the use of gardening activities have become an increasingly popular strategy. Limited data currently exists, however, on using gardening programs with preschool age children in childcare settings. Using these types of programs may be effective in increasing exposure and access to fruits and vegetables for young children and therefore may be a useful strategy in preventing childhood obesity. This study sought to determine the motivations of childcare providers …

Gender Differences In The Development Of Uremic Cardiomyopathy Following Partial Nephrectomy: Role Of Progesterone, Christopher A. Drummond, George Buddny, Steven T. Haller, Jiang Liu, Yanling Yan, Zijian Xie, Deepak Malhotra, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Jiang Tian Jan 2013

Gender Differences In The Development Of Uremic Cardiomyopathy Following Partial Nephrectomy: Role Of Progesterone, Christopher A. Drummond, George Buddny, Steven T. Haller, Jiang Liu, Yanling Yan, Zijian Xie, Deepak Malhotra, Joseph I. Shapiro Md, Jiang Tian

Biochemistry and Microbiology

Gender difference has been suggested as a risk factor for developing cardiovascular and renal diseases in humans and experimental animals. As a major sex hormone, progesterone was reported to compete with cardiotonic steroid binding to Na/K-ATPase. Our previous publication demonstrated that cardiotonic steroids (e.g., marinobufagenin) play an important role in the development of experimental uremic cardiomyopathy. We also observed that the putative mineralocorticoid antagonists, spironolactone and its major metabolite canrenone, antagonize binding of cardiotonic steroids to Na/K-ATPase in a competitive manner and also ameliorate experimental uremic cardiomyopathy induced by partial nephrectomy. In the following studies, we noted that progesterone displayed …

Improved Growth Of Lactobacillus Bulgaricus And Streptococcus Thermophilus As Well As Increased Antioxidant Activity By Biotransforming Litchi Pericarp Polysaccharide With Aspergillus Awamori, Sen Lin, Lingrong Wen, Bao Yang, Guoxiang Jiang, John Shi, Feng Chen, Yueming Jiang

Publications

This study was conducted to increase the bioactivity of litchi pericarp polysaccharides (LPPs) biotransformed by Aspergillus awamori. Compared to the non-A. awamori-fermented LPP, the growth effects of A. awamori-fermented LPP on Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus were four and two times higher after 3 days of fermentation, respectively. Increased 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity and DNA protection activity of litchi pericarp polysaccharides were also achieved after A. awamori fermentation. Moreover, the relative content of glucose and arabinose in LPP after fermentation decreased from 58.82% to 22.60% and from 18.82% to 10.09%, respectively, with a concomitant increase in the relative contents of …

Using Gis-Based, Regional Extent Habitat Suitability Modeling To Identify Conservation Priority Areas: A Case Study Of The Louisiana Black Bear In East Texas, Christopher E. Comer, I-Kuai Hung, Gary Calkins, Dan J. Kaminski, Nathan Garner

Faculty Publications

State and federal recovery plans mandate that priority areas for future population expansion be identified within the historical range of the Louisiana black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus). Despite the presence of potentially suitable habitat in east Texas and expanding populations in adjacent states, quantitative estimates of regional habitat suitability do not exist. We developed a regional extent habitat suitability index (HSI) model in a geographic information system (GIS) to evaluate year-round habitat requirements for black bears in the 43,530-km2 south black bear recovery zone in southeastern Texas. We measured hard and soft mast production, understory vegetation density, and tree den …

A Cohort Study Evaluation Of Maternal Pcb Exposure Related To Time To Pregnancy In Daughters, Chris Gennings, Caroline Carrico, Pam Factor-Litvak, Nickilou Krigbaum, Piera M. Cirillo, Barbara Cohn

Biostatistics Publications

Background Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) remain ubiquitous environmental contaminants. Developmental exposures are suspected to impact reproduction. Analysis of mixtures of PCBs may be problematic as components have a complex correlation structure, and along with limited sample sizes, standard regression strategies are problematic. We compared the results of a novel, empirical method to those based on categorization of PCB compounds by (1) hypothesized biological activity previously proposed and widely applied, and (2) degree of ortho- substitution (mono, di, tri), in a study of the relation of maternal serum PCBs and daughter’s time to pregnancy.

Methods We measured PCBs in maternal serum samples …

Diet And Nutrition In Cancer Survivorship And Palliative Care., Anthony J Bazzan, Andrew B Newberg, William C Cho, Daniel A Monti Jan 2013

Diet And Nutrition In Cancer Survivorship And Palliative Care., Anthony J Bazzan, Andrew B Newberg, William C Cho, Daniel A Monti

Marcus Institute of Integrative Health Faculty Papers

The primary goal of palliative cancer care is typically to relieve suffering and improve quality of life. Most approaches to diet in this setting have focused only on eating as many calories as possible to avoid cachexia. However, as the concept of palliative care has evolved to include all aspects of cancer survivorship and not just end of life care, there is an increasing need to thoughtfully consider diet and nutrition approaches that can impact not only quality of life but overall health outcomes and perhaps even positively affect cancer recurrence and progression. In this regard, there has been a …

Changes In Quality Of Life And Physiologic Measures In Heart Failure Patients Related To Gender And Race, Linda Steele

2010-2016 Archived Posters

Heart failure (HF) is a major health problem, with approximately 6 million people currently living with HF in the United States. It is estimated that HF will cost $39.2 billion annually (2012) inclusive of health care services, medications, and lost productivity. Two nonmodifiable risk factors for developing HF are race and gender. HF is a complex cardiovascular illness associated with diminished quality of life, decreased exercise tolerance, and increasing disease severity. This study examined the relationship between quality of life and selected physiologic variables and race aand gender on 54 patients over a six month time period.
