The Community Living Assistance Services And Supports (Class) Act: Major Legislative Provisions, Carol O'Shaughnessy
The Community Living Assistance Services And Supports (Class) Act: Major Legislative Provisions, Carol O'Shaughnessy
National Health Policy Forum
Update (January 3, 2013) — In 2010, Congress enacted the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Act as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (P.L. 111-148). The CLASS Act was repealed as part of the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012 signed by the President on January 2, 2013.
During 2011 the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) conducted an analysis of possible CLASS implementation options consistent with the statutory requirements that the program be actuarially solvent over a 75-year period and self-funded. After a 19-month period of analysis, HHS officials stated in testimony before …

Objectively Measured Sedentary Behavior In Preschool Children: Comparison Between Montessori And Traditional Preschools, Wonwoo Byun, Steven N. Blair, Russell R. Pate
Faculty Publications
Background: This study aimed to compare the levels of objectively-measured sedentary behavior in children attending Montessori preschools with those attending traditional preschools.
Methods: The participants in this study were preschool children aged 4 years old who were enrolled in Montessori and traditional preschools. The preschool children wore ActiGraph accelerometers. Accelerometers were initialized using 15-second intervals and sedentary behavior was defined as/15-second. The accelerometry data were summarized into the average minutes per hour spent in sedentary behavior during the in-school, the afterschool, and the total-day period. Mixed linear regression models were used to determine differences in the average time spent in …
Family Socioeconomic Status And Children's Reading Ability: The Buffering Effect Of Parental Social Support, Casey Dexter
Family Socioeconomic Status And Children's Reading Ability: The Buffering Effect Of Parental Social Support, Casey Dexter
Wayne State University Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to better understand the protective effect that social support has on the development of reading in children from a range of SES backgrounds. Because other studies have suggested the importance of teacher quality on children's reading ability, this was also tested. This study utilized a sample taken from the public-use version of the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Cohort (ECLS-K), a large-scale, nationally representative sample of children attending kindergarten in the United States in the fall of the 1998-1999 academic year and their families, teachers, and schools. As expected, family SES and the availability of …
Overcoming Tumor Drug Resistance By Activating Amp-Activated Protein Kinase And Destabilizing Oncoproteins, Min Shen
Wayne State University Dissertations
Although considerable progress has been achieved in the field of cancer therapeutics, primary or acquired drug resistance remains a fundamental cause of therapeutic failure in cancer therapy. Among different mechanisms characterized that are responsible for tumor drug resistance, there is increasing evidence suggesting that dysregulation of gene expression, especially oncogene or tumor suppressor gene expression, at either gene transcription or protein synthesis level, can contribute to the drug-resistant phenotype. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a well-known major cellular energy sensor, which negatively regulates metabolic pathways such as protein synthesis, fatty acid oxidation and glucose consumption. Activation of AMPK may suppress …
Microstructural Abnormalities In Striatial And Medial-Temporal Tracts In Children With A History Of Early Severe Deprivation: A Diffusion Tensor Imaging Study, Amy Veenstra
Wayne State University Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if early social deprivation led to different patterns of frontal and/or medial-temporal cortical connectivity in internationally adopted children and if these patterns of cortical connectivity were related to specific white matter tract or behavioral differences. Based on theories of brain development, it was expected that environmental factors would impact children's tract based differences and behavioral differences. A sample of 30 internationally adopted children and 12 comparison children participated in functional and structural imaging and a neuropsychological evaluation. For internationally adopted children frontal-cortical connectivity showed patterns of diffuse and low connectivity, whereas medial-temporal …

Analysis Of Feeding Behavior Of Group Housed Growing–Finishing Pigs, T.M. Brown-Brandl, G.A. Rohrer, R.A. Eigenberg
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Feeding behavior and time spent eating contains valuable information that can be used for managing livestock, identifying sick animals, and determining genetic differences within a herd. Individual animal feeding behavior, in a commercial-sized pen, was recorded using radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and a series of multiplexers. Data were collected on 960 pigs (mixed barrows, 406 and gilts, 600) over 4 grow-out periods. The animals entered the facility at 24.6 ± 5.4 kg (mean ± standard deviation) at approximately 65 days of age and exited the facility at 101.4 ± 13.8 kg (between 116 and 133 days later). Time spent at …

Effect Of Postweaning Diet On Ovarian Development And Fertility In Replacement Beef Heifers, D. R. Eborn, R. A. Cushman, S. E. Echternkamp
Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Programs for developing replacement heifers are designed for heifers to calve at 2 yr of age and to extend their stayability in the herd and minimize feed cost. The experimental objective was to determine whether developing prepubertal heifers on less dietary energy and to a BW of 55% rather than 65% of mature BW at 14 mo of age would compromise ovarian development and reduce fertility. In a 3-yr study, 8-mo-old Angus (n = 60/yr) and composite U.S. Meat Animal Research Center II (n = 60/yr) heifers were assigned equally by age, BW, and breed to receive either a …

Robert Powers Publications
During growth under conditions of glucose and oxygen excess, Staphylococcus aureus predominantly accumulates acetate in the culture medium, suggesting that the phosphotransacetylase-acetate kinase (Pta-AckA) pathway plays a crucial role in bacterial fitness. Previous studies demonstrated that these conditions also induce the S. aureus CidR regulon involved in the control of cell death. Interestingly, the CidR regulon is comprised of only two operons, both encoding pyruvate catabolic enzymes, suggesting an intimate relationship between pyruvate metabolism and cell death. To examine this relationship, we introduced ackA and pta mutations in S. aureus and tested their effects on bacterial growth, carbon and energy …

The Relationship Between Marital Status And Psychological Resilience In Chronic Pain, James B. Wade, Robert P. Hart, James H. Wade, Jasmohan S. Bajaj, Donald D. Price
Psychiatry Publications
We examined the relationship between marital status and a 2-stage model of pain-related effect, consisting of pain unpleasantness and suffering. We studied 1914 chronic pain patients using multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) to clarify whether marital status was a determinant factor in the emotional or ideational suffering associated with chronic pain after controlling for pain sensation intensity, age, and ethnicity. Marital status was unrelated to immediate unpleasantness (). We found a strong association with emotional suffering () but not with negative illness beliefs (). Interestingly, widowed subjects experienced significantly less frustration, fear, and anger than all other groups (married, divorced, …

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports
Non-O157 Shiga toxin–producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are clinically important foodborne pathogens. Unlike E. coli O157:H7, these foodborne pathogens have no unique biochemical characteristics to readily distinguish them from other E. coli strains growing on plating media. In this study, a chromogenic agar medium was developed in order to differentiate among non-O157 STEC strains of serogroups O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, and O145 on a single agar medium. The ability of this chromogenic agar medium to select and distinguish among these pathogens is based on a combination of utilization of carbohydrates, β-galactosidase activity, and resistance to selective agents. The agar …

Isolation And Characterization Of The Grain Mold Fungi Cochliobolus And Alternaria Spp. From Sorghum Using Semiselective Media And Dna Sequence Analyses, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, Louis K. Prom, Jeffrey F. Pedersen
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
Mold diseases, caused by fungal complexes including Alternaria, Cochliobolus, and Fusarium species, limit sorghum grain production. Media were tested by plating Fusarium thapsinum, Alternaria sp., and Curvularia lunata, individually and competitively. Dichloran chloramphenicol rose bengal (DRBC) and modified V8 juice (ModV8) agars, found to be useful, were compared with commonly used agar media, dichloran chloramphenicol peptone (DCPA) and pentachloronitrobenzene (PCNB). Radial growth, starting with mycelia or single-conidia and hyphal tips, demonstrated an effect of media. For isolation of grain fungi, DRBC and ModV8 were similar or superior to DCPA and PCNB. When seedlings were inoculated with conidia of C. lunata, …

The Real Dirt On Biosolids As Soil Amendments, Eton Codling, Ann Perry
The Real Dirt On Biosolids As Soil Amendments, Eton Codling, Ann Perry
Agricultural Research Magazine
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that more than 60 percent of dry biosolids—treated wastewater solids that can be recycled or stored—are applied to land, composted, or used to cover landfills. The biosolids have been processed to kill pathogens, and EPA strictly regulates biosolid use to ensure the materials don’t harm the environment, human health, or animal health.
Farmers who follow pre- and post-application management regulations can obtain permits to use biosolids for amending fields where food and feed crops are grown. Now, research by an Agricultural Research Service scientist is helping to clarify the long-term effects that biosolid …

With Hot Air Treatment, Bacteria Fly The Coop, Rosalie Marion Bliss, Mark E. Berrang
Agricultural Research Magazine
While being transported in hauling coops on trucks, poultry that have been colonized with bacteria such as Campylobacter can contaminate, through fecal shedding, pathogen-free poultry. Those pathogens can also be passed on to the next group of birds during the next trip, and so forth, unless the cycle is broken.
That’s where Agricultural Research Service microbiologists Mark Berrang and Richard Meinersmann and colleague Charles Hofacre at the University of Georgia in Athens come in. The team has reported a treatment that reduces poultry cross-contamination from transport-cage flooring.
Campylobacter are foodborne pathogens that can be present in raw or undercooked poultry. …
Going Beyond The Barnyard To Stop Stable Flies, David B. Taylor, J.J. Zhu, Sandra Avant
Going Beyond The Barnyard To Stop Stable Flies, David B. Taylor, J.J. Zhu, Sandra Avant
Agricultural Research Magazine
Livestock producers may not be able to see the difference between stable flies and other flies at a distance, but they can definitely see the stable flies’ effect on their cattle as the animals stop grazing and bunch together to minimize the number of bites they’re getting.
Stable flies are among the most important arthropod pests of cattle in the United States. Their painful bites can reduce milk production in dairy cows, decrease weight gain in beef cattle, and reduce feed efficiency.
Generally, insecticide sprays are used to help keep stable flies off animals, especially their legs, where the flies …
