From August 22 to September 16, 2012, atmospheric mercury (Hg) was measured from a common manifold in the field during the Reno Atmospheric Mercury Intercomparison eXperiment. Data were collected using Tekran systems, laser induced fluorescence, and evolving new methods. The latter included the University of Washington-Detector for Oxidized Mercury, the University of Houston Mercury instrument, and a filter-based system under development by the University of Nevada-Reno. Good transmission of total Hg was found for the manifold. However, despite application of standard protocols and rigorous quality control, systematic differences in operationally defined forms of Hg were measured by the sampling systems. …

Acclimatization To Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia In Mine Workers: A Challenge To Mountain Medicine In Chile, J. G. Farias, D. Jimenez, J. Osario, A. B. Zepeda, C. A. Figueroa, V. M. Pulgar
Pharmaceutical Sciences
In the past two decades, Chile has developed intense mining activity in the Andes mountain range, whose altitude is over 4,000 meters above sea level. It is estimated that a workforce population of over 55,000 is exposed to high altitude hypobaric hypoxia. The miners work under shift systems which vary from 4 to 20 days at the worksite followed by rest days at sea level, in a cycle repeated for several years. This Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia (CIH) constitutes an unusual condition for workers involving a series of changes at the physiological, cellular and molecular levels attempting to compensate for the …

Organically Grown Food Provides Health Benefits To Drosophila Melanogaster, Ria Chhabra, Santharam Kolli, Johannes H. Bauer
Organically Grown Food Provides Health Benefits To Drosophila Melanogaster, Ria Chhabra, Santharam Kolli, Johannes H. Bauer
Biosciences Research
The ‘‘organic food’’ market is the fastest growing food sector, yet it is unclear whether organically raised food is nutritionally superior to conventionally grown food and whether consuming organic food bestows health benefits. In order to evaluate potential health benefits of organic foods, we used the well-characterized fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster as a model system. Fruit flies were raised on diets consisting of extracts of either conventionally or organically raised produce (bananas, potatoes, raisins, soy beans). Flies were then subjected to a variety of tests designed to assess overall fly health. Flies raised on diets made from organically grown produce …

Comparison Of Two Different Methods To Harvest Drought‐Damaged Corn, W.C. Rusche, J.A. Walker
Comparison Of Two Different Methods To Harvest Drought‐Damaged Corn, W.C. Rusche, J.A. Walker
South Dakota Beef Report, 2013
Two methods of harvesting drought‐stressed corn as large round bales were compared in this study. Three acres of drought‐stressed corn were cut and either baled as high‐moisture bales and wrapped in plastic (BALEAGE), or allowed to completely dry and baled with a conventional large round baler (DRY). Core samples were analyzed for moisture, CP, ADF, NDF and in vitro NDF and DM digestibility. Samples from the BALEAGE treatment were lower in CP than those from the DRY treatment. Concentrations of ADF and NDF did not differ between BALEAGE and DRY. Dry matter and NDF digestibility were also similar between the …

Treatment Of Food Selectivity In Children With Autism: A Review Of Literature And Introduction To Holistic Treatment Approach, Tara Swodzinski
Treatment Of Food Selectivity In Children With Autism: A Review Of Literature And Introduction To Holistic Treatment Approach, Tara Swodzinski
Honors Theses
Food selectivity is a problem in many of the lives of children with autism. Limited food repertoires can negatively affect nutritional status and the quality of life for these children and their families. The precise cause of this food selectivity is unknown although a number of reasons have been posited. This inability to pinpoint an exact cause has lead to a debate between researchers about whether behavioral or physiological issues are to blame. This paper first explores both of these options. Then, a new clinical program at WMU OT Unified Clinics is described that focuses on a holistic approach used …

Growing Empathy : An Exploratory Study On The Effects Of School Gardens On Children's Social And Emotional Development : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At Berkeley Independent Study, Berkeley, California, Emily W. Mcmane
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this research study was to explore the effects of school garden programs on children's social and emotional development, specifically the development of empathy as measured by prosocial behaviors. This exploratory study employed qualitative research methods to interview six children, three parents, and two teachers involved in the Berkeley Independent Study (BIS) garden in Berkeley, California, gathering data regarding the participants' observations and experiences of the garden program. The findings suggest that there are many aspects of school garden programs that may positively influence children's social and emotional development. The significance of community, attachment, teaching respect for life, …

Counting The Economic Costs And Policy Implications Associated With Divorce: Texas As A Case Study, David G. Schramm, Steven M. Harris, Jason B. Whiting Phd, Alan J. Hawkins, Matt Brown, Rob Porter
Faculty Publications
Although many adults and children are resilient after divorce, it is common for marital breakups to precipitate the need for government assistance for families who had been self-sufficient. This study focuses on the economic costs of divorce associated with means-tested welfare programs in Texas, which fall into five central areas: medical assistance; cash assistance; food assistance; housing, energy, and utility assistance; and child care and development assistance. The study estimated that Texas spends at least $3.18 billion on divorce and its related consequences each year, accounting for approximately 12% of the total Texas budget in 2008. These results reinforce the …

Estimation Of Total Body Skeletal Muscle Mass In Chinese Adults: Prediction Model By Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry, Xinyu Zhao, Zimian Wang, Junyi Zhang, Jianming Hua, Wei He, Shankuan Zhu
Publications and Research
Background: There are few reports on total body skeletal muscle mass (SM) in Chinese. The objective of this study is to establish a prediction model of SM for Chinese adults.
Methodology: Appendicular lean soft tissue (ALST) was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and SM by magnetic resonance image (MRI) in 66 Chinese adults (52 men and 14 women). Images of MRI were segmented into compartments including intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) and IMAT-free SM. Regression was used to fit the prediction model SM~czk|ALST. Age and gender were adjusted in the fitted model. The piece-wise linear function was performed to …
Triacylglyceride Profiles Of Integumentary Lipids Isolated From Three Bat Species Determined By Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometry, Evan Lacy Pannkuk
Student Theses and Dissertations
Lipids secreted from sebaceous glands in bat integument may play a role in determining host pathogenicity by the fungus Geomyces destructans in White-Nose Syndrome (WNS). To investigate this, I have developed analytical methods to determine the triacylglycerol (TAG) profiles for three bat species: Eastern red bats (Lasiurus borealis, Müller, 1776), evening bats (Nycticeius humeralis, Rafinesque, 1818), and big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus, Beauvois, 1796). Neutral lipids extracted from the hair and wing tissue were fractionated by preparative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) into four major lipid bands corresponding to cholesterol, free fatty acids (FFAs), TAGs, and sterol/wax esters. Densitometry showed higher proportions …

Nitrogen Dynamics Of Switchgrass, Eastern Gamagrass And High Biomass Sorghum From Different Sources Of Chemical And Organic Nitrogen Fertilizers, Lucia Margarita Acosta Gamboa
Student Theses and Dissertations
Use of biomass to produce energy is a renewable source. A field experiment was established during 2009 in Northeast Arkansas to evaluate eastern gamagrass, switchgrass and biomass sorghum response to nitrogen fertilization on nitrogen dynamics and dry biomass yield. Nitrogen fertilizers included municipal biosolids, poultry litter, urea and a control. Throughout 2010 and 2011, switchgrass yielded greater biomass compared to gamagrass. Nitrogen fertilization increased yield compared to the control. In 2010, nitrogen use efficiency was greater for switchgrass compared to gamagrass. During 2011 NUE was lesser for biomass sorghum than for gamagrass. Switchgrass yielded greater biomass than gamagrass and biomass …

Ethical Issues Surrounding Weight Bias And Stigma In Healthcare, Wren B. Hand Msn, Rn, Jennifer C. Robinson Phd, Rn, Eileen Creel Dns, Rn
Journal of Health Ethics
With the recognition of obesity as a global epidemic (World Health Organization [WHO], 2012), there has been increased interest in the study of weight bias and stigmatization (Ashmore, Friedman, Reichmann, & Musante, 2008; Puhl, Schwartz, & Brownell, 2005). Weight bias is a highly prevalent form of discrimination, perhaps as common as racial bias (Shkolnikova, 2008). Occurring in a wide variety of settings, weight bias may produce adverse effects in social relationships, education, employment, and health care (Durso & Latner, 2008), with the result that obese or overweight persons are socially marginalized and stigmatized.
