The Past, Present, And Future Of Water Conflict And International Security, David K. Kreamer Jan 2013

The Past, Present, And Future Of Water Conflict And International Security, David K. Kreamer

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Water stress and scarcity has affected, and will continue to affect, the stability of communities. An overview of global water security challenges indicates profound difficulties and potential flashpoints. There are many examples of struggles in supplying clean water throughout the world, and how water has been both a strategic tool and object of conflict in the past. Water has been an instrument of ethnic and religious conflict, and has recently been used in regional and local clashes. Transboundary water disputes are also potentially dangerous in several regions of the world and stresses from climate change and variability increase the uncertainty …

Lipophilic Stinging Nettle Extracts Possess Potent Anti-Inflammatory Activity, Are Not Cytotoxic And May Be Superior To Traditional Tinctures For Treating Inflammatory Disorders., Tyler A. Johnson, Johann Sohn, Wayne D Inman, Leonard F. Bjeldanes, Keith Rayburn

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

Extracts of four plant portions (roots, stems, leaves and flowers) of Urtica dioica (the stinging nettle) were prepared using accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) involving water, hexanes, methanol and dichloromethane. The extracts were evaluated for their anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic activities in an NF-κB luciferase and MTT assay using macrophage immune (RAW264.7) cells. A standardized commercial ethanol extract of nettle leaves was also evaluated. The methanolic extract of the flowering portions displayed significant anti-inflammatory activity on par with a standard compound celastrol (1) but were moderately cytotoxic. Alternatively, the polar extracts (water, methanol, ethanol) of the roots, stems and leaves displayed moderate …

Recent Data Show Continued Growth In Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Use, Jess Carson, William W. Meub

Carsey Publications

This brief uses data from the American Community Survey to examine rates of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) receipt in 2011, with particular attention to changes since the onset of the recession, and to receipt by family composition, region, and place type (rural, suburban, and central city locations). It also explores SNAP receipt among households at particular risk for food insecurity. Authors Jessica Carson and William Meub report that 13 percent of all households reported receiving benefits in 2011. This represents an increase from 7.7 percent in 2007, reflecting both changes in need and policy. SNAP is increasingly the target …

Dietary Habits, Menstrual Health, Body Composition, And Eating Disorder Risk Among Collegiate Volleyball Players: A Descriptive Study, Suzanne L. Vargas, Kelly Kerr-Pritchett, Charilaos Papadopoulous, Virginia Bennett

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 6(1) : 52-62, 2013. Volleyball is typically considered a non-aesthetic sport. However, the revealing nature of volleyball uniforms may place additional pressure on female volleyball players to be thin and increase the risk of disordered eating. The purpose of this study was to provide descriptive data concerning the body composition, nutritional habits, eating disorder risk, and menstrual health of collegiate volleyball players. Female collegiate volleyball players (N = 14) completed a 7-day food record, menstrual health questionnaire, and EAT-26 survey. Participant body composition was determined using a 3 site skinfold test and the Bod …

Risk And Manifestation Of Cardiovascular Disease Among Cancer Caregivers: Effects Of Stress, Depression, And Gender, Kelly M. Shaffer Jan 2013

Risk And Manifestation Of Cardiovascular Disease Among Cancer Caregivers: Effects Of Stress, Depression, And Gender, Kelly M. Shaffer

Open Access Theses

Family members and friends who provide unpaid care to an ill relative tend to experience higher levels of stress, more depressive symptoms, and greater vulnerability to disease than the general population (Pinquart & Sörensen, 2003). This study was to determine whether cancer caregivers experience an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and to examine the extent to which psychosocial variables related to the disease outcomes. A total of 896 caregivers participated in a national survey at two years after the diagnosis of their relative with cancer (T1), and 607 participated again at five years post-diagnosis (T2) provided self-report data on …

Walking Distance And Performance Of Drylot Developed Beef Heifers Following Being Moved To A Grazing Situation, G.A. Perry, E.L. Larimore, J.A. Walker Jan 2013

Walking Distance And Performance Of Drylot Developed Beef Heifers Following Being Moved To A Grazing Situation, G.A. Perry, E.L. Larimore, J.A. Walker

South Dakota Beef Report, 2013

Research has shown that heifers moved from a drylot to grass after AI have decreased weight gains and pregnancy success compared to heifers developed on range. This effect could potentially be due to inexperience in a specific grazing environment, which could result in greater time spent exploring a new environment. In this study beef heifers were moved from a drylot to spring grass at two different times and their activity compared. Heifers in a drylot walked less than heifers grazing spring forage. However, following being moved to spring forage heifers that had been adjusted to grass for about a month …

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends restricting our intake of saturated fat to less than 7 percent of calories, and our cholesterol intake to less than 300 mg per day (less than two eggs). They promote the use of low-fat milk and lean meat, and the use of “meat substitutes” in school lunches. These recommendations are consistent with the official dietary policy that began in 1977 with the release of the first Dietary Goals for the United States by the United States Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs. These guidelines were not justified by the then-available science. …

Pasture Finishing Beef Opportunities In Kentucky, Greg S. Halich Jan 2013

Pasture Finishing Beef Opportunities In Kentucky, Greg S. Halich

Forage Symposium at the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Convention

Beef cattle were routinely finished locally in Kentucky before the 1950’s, primarily on pasture with some grain and by-products from distilleries. Cattle were typically born, raised, and finished on the same farm, sent to a local butcher, and the meat sold in nearby communities and cities. This all changed after the Second World War as grain and transportation costs decreased dramatically in conjunction with the establishment of supermarket chains that required a large, steady supply channel. The combined effect of these changes made finishing in large centralized locations more economical. Over the next couple of decades the finishing industry consolidated, …

Traversing Swanton Road, 11th Ed., James A. West Jan 2013

Traversing Swanton Road, 11th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

The Effect Of Handler Personality Type On Feedlot Cattle Behavioral Responses, H. Franzky, R. Pritchard, J. Trenhaile Jan 2013

The Effect Of Handler Personality Type On Feedlot Cattle Behavioral Responses, H. Franzky, R. Pritchard, J. Trenhaile

South Dakota Beef Report, 2013

The ability to readily identify individuals that may have a greater innate ability to handle cattle in a low stress manner would be useful in feedlots and on ranches. This study was conducted to determine whether handler personality type would be a useful tool to predict stockman abilities. To accomplish this, 3 cattle handling exercises were created to observe human‐cattle interactions. A scoring system was developed to investigate cattle handling proficiency based on cattle behavioral responses. Handler personality type was classified using two assessments. Some cattle handling exercises did not differentiate handler personality types. Introverted handlers tended to have higher …

Biomarkers Of Maternal And Fetal Exposure To Organochlorine Pesticides Measured In Pregnant Hispanic Women From Brownsville, Texas, Ken Sexton, Jennifer J Salinas, Thomas J Mcdonald, Rose M Z Gowen, Rebecca P Miller, Joseph B Mccormick, Susan P Fisher-Hoch Jan 2013

Biomarkers Of Maternal And Fetal Exposure To Organochlorine Pesticides Measured In Pregnant Hispanic Women From Brownsville, Texas, Ken Sexton, Jennifer J Salinas, Thomas J Mcdonald, Rose M Z Gowen, Rebecca P Miller, Joseph B Mccormick, Susan P Fisher-Hoch

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Biomarkers of organochlorine pesticides were measured in both venous and umbilical cord blood from 35 pregnant Hispanic women living in Brownsville, Texas, USA. Gas chromatography with an electron capture detector was used to analyze specimens for 30 individual pesticides or their metabolites. Results indicate that blood concentrations were relatively low for most individual compounds, but that high-end (upper 10th percentile) values for total DDT were comparatively high. Although health effects associated with measured blood concentrations are uncertain, there is concern that fetal exposure to low levels of these OC compounds, either individually or in combination, might contribute to subsequent health …
