Faktor Risiko Diare Shigellosis Pada Anak Balita, A. Zulkifli Abdullah, A. Arsunan Arsin, Lidyawati Dahlan

Kesmas

Making A Case For Multi-Disciplinary Analysis, Matthew J. Richard, Michael G. Noll, Catherine Oglesby, Mark Patrick George, Tracy Woodard

The Journal of Public and Professional Sociology

In recent years, I have been drawn to inter-disciplinary approaches to scholarship. Specifically, I have been attracted to “mind studies”—an alluring amalgam of Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Developmental Psychology, Psychoanalysis, Social Psychology, and Anthropology—as offering more satisfying explanations of human action. In this paper I want to explore more deeply and expound further upon the benefits of multi-disciplinary research. To do so, I’ve invited colleagues of mine who work in other disciplines to view an ethnographic film about a poor Appalachian family and to identify specific issues in it that they would develop further in their classes. My working assumption is …

Sexual Orientation And Functional Pain In U.S. Young Adults: The Mediating Role Of Childhood Abuse, Andrea L. Roberts, Margaret Rosario, Heather L. Corliss, David Wypij, Jennifer R. Lightdale, S. Bryn Austin Jan 2013

Sexual Orientation And Functional Pain In U.S. Young Adults: The Mediating Role Of Childhood Abuse, Andrea L. Roberts, Margaret Rosario, Heather L. Corliss, David Wypij, Jennifer R. Lightdale, S. Bryn Austin

Publications and Research

Objective: Pain without known pathology, termed ‘‘functional pain,’’ causes much school absenteeism, medication usage, and medical visits. Yet which adolescents are at risk is not well understood. Functional pain has been linked to childhood abuse, and sexual orientation minority youth (gay, lesbian, bisexual, ‘‘mostly heterosexual,’’ and heterosexual with same-sex sexual contact) are more likely to be victims of childhood abuse than heterosexuals, thus may be at greater risk of functional pain.

Methods: We examined sexual orientation differences in past-year prevalence of functional headache, pelvic, and abdominal pain and multiple sites of pain in 9,864 young adults (mean age = …

Tree Climbing And Human Evolution, Vivek V. Venkataraman, Thomas S. Kraft, Nathaniel J. Dominy Jan 2013

Tree Climbing And Human Evolution, Vivek V. Venkataraman, Thomas S. Kraft, Nathaniel J. Dominy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Paleoanthropologists have long argued—often contentiously—about the climbing abilities of early hominins and whether a foot adapted to terrestrial bipedalism constrained regular access to trees. However, some modern humans climb tall trees routinely in pursuit of honey, fruit, and game, often without the aid of tools or support systems. Mortality and morbidity associated with facultative arboreality is expected to favor behaviors and anatomies that facilitate safe and efficient climbing. Here we show that Twa hunter–gatherers use extraordinary ankle dorsiflexion (>45°) during climbing, similar to the degree observed in wild chimpanzees. Although we did not detect a skeletal signature of dorsiflexion …

An Econometric Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Development Finance For The Energy Sector, Giorgio Gualberti, Luis Filipe Martins, Morgan Bazilian Jan 2013

An Econometric Analysis Of The Effectiveness Of Development Finance For The Energy Sector, Giorgio Gualberti, Luis Filipe Martins, Morgan Bazilian

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Reaching the objective of universal access to modern energy services will require large investments in infrastructure in developing countries. An important part of funding will be provided in the form of development finance and its effectiveness in producing positive impacts is crucial for this achievement. This paper presents a panel analysis of the relationship between the installed capacity of electricity generation, the development finance committed for the energy sector, and the gross fixed capital formation. We tested four models with a large dataset and found development finance to have, in most cases, a positive influence on installed base.

The Use Of Αsmagfp To Define Progenitor Cells Of The Dental Pulp., Reza Fatahi Jan 2013

The Use Of Αsmagfp To Define Progenitor Cells Of The Dental Pulp., Reza Fatahi

Doctoral Dissertations

It has been proposed that perivascular cells of the dental pulp are a source of odontoblast-like cells. However, the differentiation potential of perivascular cells remained undefined. In the present study we utilized αSMAGFP and αSMACreERT2xAi9 models to define the ability of perivascular cells to give rise to second generation of odontoblasts secreting dentin.

Dental pulp cells were collected from unerupted molars of P5-P7 neonatal pups. The αSMAGFP+ dental pulp cells were a small population residing in close proximity to endothelial cells in vivo. During growth and mineralization of primary pulp cultures, there was a significant increase in the number …

Faculty Publications

Indicators of family care for development are essential for ascertaining whether families are providing their children with an environment that leads to positive developmental outcomes. This project aimed to develop indicators from a set of items, measuring family care practices and resources important for caregiving, for use in epidemiologic surveys in developing countries. A mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) design was used for item selection and evaluation. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted to examine the validity of candidate items in several country samples. Qualitative methods included the use of global expert panels to identify and evaluate the performance of …

Nutritional Basis For Colonization Resistance By Human Commensal Escherichia Coli Strains Hs And Nissle 1917 Against E. Coli O157:H7 In The Mouse Intestine, Rosalie Maltby, Mary P. Leatham-Jensen, Terri Gibson, Paul S. Cohen, Tyrrell Conway

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Escherichia coli is a single species consisting of many biotypes, some of which are commensal colonizers of mammals and others that cause disease. Humans are colonized on average with five commensal biotypes, and it is widely thought that the commensals serve as a barrier to infection by pathogens. Previous studies showed that a combination of three pre-colonized commensal E. coli strains prevents colonization of E. coli O157:H7 in a mouse model (Leatham, et al., 2010, Infect Immun 77: 2876–7886). The commensal biotypes included E. coli HS, which is known to successfully colonize humans at high doses with no adverse effects, …
