A Study Of Suicide: A Latent Class-Evidence Based Model For Screening Of Suicidal Behaviors Among Adolescents Living In The United States From 1991-2011, Ryan Christopher Butterfield
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to use self-reported data from adolescents as the foundation for a statistical screening process of suicidal behavior. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) is used to study patterns of suicidal behavior among adolescents and by extension, the development of evidence-based behavioral profiles of those adolescents identified as having suicidal-related behaviors. Suicidal behavior variables in the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) ask about specific actions related to suicide ideation, planning, attempts and injury, but it is the underlying construct of "suicidal behavior" that is the ultimate question of interest. LCA allows for the development of evidence-based behavioral …

The Value Of Relevant, Project-Based Learning To Youth Development, Kerry Schwartz, Darcy Tessman, Daniel Mcdonald
The Value Of Relevant, Project-Based Learning To Youth Development, Kerry Schwartz, Darcy Tessman, Daniel Mcdonald
Journal of Youth Development
Project Based Learning models present authentic learning opportunities with real-life situations, enabling students to set their own learning goals and forge their own relationships (Barab, et al., 2001). The autonomy inherent in this model allows youth to bring their skills and experiences to real situations and to be seen as valued community members. This article describes a project-based learning model involving “externs,” who developed and implemented sustainability projects in their communities. Externs worked with Cooperative Extension professionals on locally relevant community projects during the summer of 2011 in three Arizona counties. The project based learning experience had a positive impact …

A Guide To The Pomona College Organic Farm: An Introduction To The Farm’S History And Basic Gardening Skills And Techniques, Adam J. Long
Pomona Senior Theses
It was almost four years ago when I first visited the Pomona College Organic Farm and since then I have learned everything from the basics of gardening to the complex steps required to organize students for events and activities. As I learned more and saw so many students come and go, I saw a need for written documentation that would allow future generations of students to benefit from the skills that my peers and I have learned in our time at the Farm. The value of the Farm is grounded in having a vibrant physical space, and right now the …

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Over 1.4 million middle school adolescents participate in afterschool programs each year. While most of the obesity prevention interventions focus on the traditional school day, the afterschool setting should not be overlooked. A pilot study was conducted using KidQuest, a traditional classroom nutrition and physical activity intervention for early adolescents ages 10 to 12 based on the social cognitive theory, in an afterschool setting. The purpose of the pilot study was to evaluate the effectiveness of using a nutrition and physical activity intervention developed for the traditional school day in an afterschool setting. The desired outcome of this mixed-methods study …

The purpose of this study is to assess the nutrition and physical activity practices provided for children, self-efficacy, and perceived needs of child care providers across Nebraska. A gap in knowledge exist for practices of child care providers in Nebraska and the impact of Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), …
'Clean Energy' At What Cost?, Rachel E. Conrad
'Clean Energy' At What Cost?, Rachel E. Conrad
Pitzer Senior Theses
Ecuador was ‘refounded’ at the turn of the 21st century, with the articulation of progressive and inclusive ideals in a new Constitution. Social movements and leftist intellectuals in Ecuador have expressed that president Rafael Correa has failed to uphold the 2008 Constitution’s goals and values. President Correa and his Alianza PAIS government have utilized the rhetoric of the revolutionary ideals articulated in the Constitution, but in practice, they have continued to implement the status quo Western development model, and a large part of their development strategy involves ‘neo-extractive’ activities. Hydroelectric energy production is contributing to the ‘neo-extractive’ development model …

This is a memoir piece that details a tumultuous period in my life between departing for my study abroad experience in Rwanda and Uganda, struggling with what I encountered there, and then attempting to reintegrate into the same life prior to my departure. Specifically, it focuses on my time in northern Uganda, and a women I met in an IDP (internal displaced persons) camp who really made me think about what my role should be both there and at home. This piece explores a number of themes including guilt, blame, and, ultimately, a certain amount of forgiveness.

The purpose of this review is to examine available evidence for the use of Therapeutic Horticulture (TH) as a supplemental treatment of depression. For this paper, TH is defined as active or passive use of plants to achieve wellness (Sempik, Aldridge, & Becker, 2003) as applied to depression. A review of the available literature was performed using academic databases and the internet. Terms used in the search were horticultural therapy, depression, gardening, horticulture, and therapeutic horticulture. Few studies were devoted specifically to depression; applications for other mental health conditions are also discussed. Results support the use of TH as supplemental …

Global Patterns In Overweight Among Children And Mothers In Less Developed Countries, Jennifer Van Hook, Claire E. Altman, Kelly Stamper Balistreri
Sociology Faculty Publications
Objective: Past research has identified increases in national income and urbanization as key drivers of the global obesity epidemic. That work further identified educational attainment and urban residence as important moderators of the effects of national income. However, such work has tended to assume that children and adults respond in the same way to these factors. In the present paper, we evaluate how the socio-economic and country-level factors associated with obesity differ between children and their mothers. Design: We modelled the associations between maternal education, country-level income and urban residence with mother's and children's weight status. Setting We analysed ninety-five …

The article examines the legal frameworks governing disability discrimination related to alcohol dependence and obesity across Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. It highlights the varying degrees of protection afforded to individuals with these conditions under human rights legislation and employment laws. The analysis underscores the tension between recognizing these conditions as disabilities and balancing employer responsibilities, while also exploring the evolving nature of legal protections in light of recent court rulings and shifting societal attitudes.
What's Immoral About Monsanto?: Strengthening The Roots Of The Moral Utility Requirement By Amending The U.S. Patent Act, Gary Gregory
What's Immoral About Monsanto?: Strengthening The Roots Of The Moral Utility Requirement By Amending The U.S. Patent Act, Gary Gregory
Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law
The note advocates for integrating moral utility requirements into the U.S. patent system to address ethical concerns, particularly regarding transgenic seeds and their environmental and health impacts. It proposes adopting a balancing test, similar to the European Patent Office's approach, to weigh the benefits and harms of such inventions. This would allow courts to invalidate patents that cause significant harm, even if they offer economic benefits, thereby aligning the patent system with public morality and societal values.

African Americans have the highest prevalence of hypertension in the world which may emanate from their predisposition to heightened endothelial inflammation. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of a 6-month aerobic exercise training (AEXT) intervention on the inflammatory biomarkers interleukin-10 (IL-10), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and endothelial microparticle (EMP) CD62E+ and endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in African Americans. A secondary purpose was to evaluate whether changes in IL-10, IL-6, or CD62E+ EMPs predicted the change in FMD following the 6-month AEXT intervention. A pre-post design was employed with baseline evaluation including office blood pressure, FMD, …

The No Child Left Behind Act: An Analysis Of Its Impact On The Academic Success Of Students In Cobb And Fulton Counties In Georgia, Valerie Veney
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)
The recent attention to the United States’ educational system has revealed that many students, especially those in underserved communities, are not receiving a quality education. The goal of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is to ensure that all children receive a high quality education (U.S. Department of Education 2001). The purpose of this study is to determine whether the No Child Left Behind Act has contributed to the academic success of the students in Cobb and Fulton counties in Georgia.
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) required all states to develop standardized tests and accountability systems …

We believe that the U.S. economy will continue growing modestly through 2013 and pick up speed in 2014. We have positioned the portfolio to take advantage of a slowly growing economy by slightly over-weighting the consumer discretionary, energy, industrials, technology, and health care sectors as these have traditionally benefited from recoveries. Accordingly, the consumer durables, financials, materials, telecommunications, and utilities sectors were under-weighted. Although the future is unusually cloudy, we reached this conclusion based on expected economic growth rates, favorable market P/E ratios and continued low interest rates.
Health Risk Of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (Ets), Dewan S. Raja, Bahar Sultana
Health Risk Of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (Ets), Dewan S. Raja, Bahar Sultana
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Environmental tobacco smoke is a preventable cause of significant morbidity and mortality among non-smokers. Reducing exposure to tobacco smoke is an essential community and public health objective. This report documents the substantial evidence characterizing the health risks caused by exposure to passive smoking. Multiple major reviews of evidence have concluded that environmental tobacco smoke is a known human carcinogen and that exposure to passive smoke causes adverse effects like SIDS, congenital birth defects, lead poisoning, and lung cancer. Regrettably, reductions in exposure have been slower among small children than among adults, as growing workplace restriction protects the majority of adults …

An engineered aquatic ecosystem was specifically designed to bioremediate selenium (Se), occurring as oxidized inorganic selenate from hypersalinized agricultural drainage water while producing brine shrimp enriched in organic Se and omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for use in value added nutraceutical food supplements. Selenate was successfully bioremediated by microalgal metabolism into organic Se (seleno-amino acids) and partially removed via gaseous volatile Se formation. Furthermore, filterfeeding brine shrimp that accumulated this organic Se were removed by net harvest. Thriving in this engineered pond system, brine shrimp (Artemia franciscana Kellogg) and brine fly (Ephydridae sp.) have major ecological relevance as important food …
