The Role Of Social Physique Anxiety, Social Support, And Perceived Benefits And Barrier To Exercise In All-Female Fitness Camp Intervention, Lauren Elizabeth Easton

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Only 3.2% of Americans ages 20-59 years meet the minimum recommended volume of exercise suggestions. In addition to the substantial percentage of people who fail to meet exercise requirements, only 15% of American adults engage in exercise on a regular basis, i.e. exercising for twenty minutes at least three times per week to improve health. (Schrop, Pendleton, McCord, Gil, Stockton, McNatt, & Gilchrist, 2006). Although the small proportion of those who reach the suggested physical activity levels is a topic of concern for adults, the CDC reports that physical inactivity levels are even higher for females than those of males. …

How Clean Is A Restaurant Menu? A Study Of Bacterial Transfer To And From Restaurant Menus , Ibtehal Alsallaiy, Paul Dawson, Inyee Han

Graduate Research and Discovery Symposium (GRADS)

Some non-food contact surfaces such as restaurant menus are not routinely evaluated for microbial contamination thus can be a potential contamination risk. The main objectives of this study were to detect bacteria on restaurant menus, test the rate of bacteria transfer from menus to consumers and determine the survival rate of bacteria on the menu surface. Samples collected from local restaurants’ menus and analyzed for total aerobic organisms and Staphylococcus spp, indicated that menus often harbored detectable levels of bacteria. The average transfer rate was 11.17%, with a high variability between subjects (10.45% standard deviation). Survival rate of bacteria was …

Positive Youth Development In The 21st Century: Exploring Online Environment, Mark Light, Jessica Falkenthal

Journal of Youth Development

The manner that young people and adults are communicating with each other is rapidly changing in society that is, in part, driven by the latest technology. As a youth-driven program, we must engage in new strategies and methods by which we communicate with youth members, volunteers, families, and the community at large. Social and mobile media are a growing and popular venue for much of our target audience and youth development practitioners must learn how to leverage these networks to create positive youth development in online environments. If we ignore and don’t engage in the opportunity to be connected to …

The total number of dentists practicing in Nebraska in 2012 was 1,028, compared to 1,017 in 2008; however, the number of dentists per 100,000 population decreased by 2.85% between 2008 and 2012, and the number of dentists …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Socio-cultural factors negate the health of women. Therefore, health promotion as a focus of nursing practice aimed at capitalizing on the inherent capacities of women to establish health priorities, goals and strategies to improve their health. A descriptive survey with the purpose of ascertaining the influence of culture, social and health policies on nurses’ practice of health promotion was undertaken. Three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. A sample of one hundred and thirty six nurses participated in the study. A validated questionnaire with a test-retest reliability coefficient (r) of 0.79 was used for data collection. Correlation analysis was …

Creating Sustainable Economic And Ecological Growth In The Congo Basin: Bushmeat Consumption And Biodiversity Protection, Richelle Lynn Warnock

Masters Theses

This research examines the economic and ecological sustainability of bushmeat hunting in the Congo Basin, specifically the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. Although bushmeat hunting has provided short term gain for individuals in the region, long term solutions focusing on micro and macro level interventions may provide community wide benefits, while protecting Congo Basin wildlife. Research shows that a focus on the development of key economic sectors such as agriculture, mineral resources and hydroelectricity, as well as the growth of infrastructure may provide viable economic gain for the Congo Basin. Ecotourism and improvements to forest management …

Self Management In Heart Failure Education, Michelle Brown Apr 2013

Self Management In Heart Failure Education, Michelle Brown

Theses and Dissertations

Heart failure is a growing health problem in the United States, costing the healthcare system billions of dollars and having a significant impact on patients' quality of life. To improve heart failure outcomes and reduce associated costs, we must educate patients to properly manage their disease condition. Traditionally, this patient education takes place during a standard office visit with a provider. However, in a self-management program, the provider, through individualized education, empowers the patient to become an active participant in their care. The purpose of this literature review was to explore the effect of self management programs, in comparison to …

Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to complete a review of literature and determine methods providers can use to increase the implementation rates of advance directives (ADs). A growing elderly population coupled with an increase in chronic disease is making the implementation of advance directives more important than ever, yet the percentage of completed advance directives continues to be poor. Utilizing a review of evidence-based research, barriers to implementation were identified. This includes communication, timing and setting, appropriate end-of-life care and utilization of Provider Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) to provide a detailed format therefore lessening miscommunication. A pamphlet …

Tackling The Global Ncd Crisis: Innovations In Law And Governance, Bryan P. Thomas, Lawrence O. Gostin Apr 2013

Tackling The Global Ncd Crisis: Innovations In Law And Governance, Bryan P. Thomas, Lawrence O. Gostin

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

35 million people die annually of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), 80% of them in low- and middle-income countries—representing a marked epidemiological transition from infectious to chronic diseases and from richer to poorer countries. The total number of NCDs is projected to rise by 17% over the coming decade, absent significant interventions. The NCD epidemic poses unique governance challenges: the causes are multifactorial, the affected populations diffuse, and effective responses require sustained multi-sectorial cooperation. The authors propose a range of regulatory options available at the domestic level, including stricter food labeling laws, regulation of food advertisements, tax incentives for healthy lifestyle choices, …
