Price, Promotion, And Availability Of Nutrition Information: A Descriptive Study Of A Popular Fast Food Chain In New York City, Corey Hannah Basch, Danna Ethan, Sonali Rajan Aug 2013

Price, Promotion, And Availability Of Nutrition Information: A Descriptive Study Of A Popular Fast Food Chain In New York City, Corey Hannah Basch, Danna Ethan, Sonali Rajan

Publications and Research

Legislation in NYC requires chain restaurants to post calorie information on menu boards in an effort to help consumers make more informed decisions about food and beverage items they are purchasing. While this is a step in the right direction in light of the current obesity epidemic, there are other issues that warrant attention in a fast food setting, namely the pricing of healthy food options, promotional strategies, and access to comprehensive nutrition information. This study focused on a popular fast-food chain in NYC. The study’s aims were threefold: (1) to determine the cost differential between the healthiest meal item …

Conservation And Diversification Of Appendage Identity Specification Mechanisms Along The Anteroposterior And Proximodistal Axes In Panarthropoda, Frank W. Smith Iii Aug 2013

Conservation And Diversification Of Appendage Identity Specification Mechanisms Along The Anteroposterior And Proximodistal Axes In Panarthropoda, Frank W. Smith Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

In Chapter 1, the roles of genes that specify antennal identity in Drosophila melanogaster were investigated in the flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Antenna-to-leg transformations occurred in response to RNA interference (RNAi) against homothorax, extradenticle, spineless and Distal-less. However, for homothorax/extradenticle RNAi, the extent of transformation along the proximodistal axis differed between embryogenesis and metamorphosis. In chapter 2, the metamorphic roles of the Hox genes, extradenticle, and homothorax were compared in T. castaneum. homothorax/extradenticle RNAi and Hox RNAi produced similar body wall phenotypes but different appendage phenotypes. These results suggest that Hox genes …

Investigating The Metabolic And Pathophysiological Ramifications Of Elevated Dietary Cholesterol And Macronutrient Manipulation In Guinea Pigs (Cavia Porcellus) With Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (Nafld), Ryan C. Deogburn Aug 2013

Deogburn

Doctoral Dissertations

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a clinicopathological entity that includes a spectrum of histological and biochemical anomalies. NAFLD begins with excessive lipid accumulation within hepatocytes (hepatic steatosis) and can transition to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), characterized by hepatic inflammation and injury that can render the liver vulnerable to bridging fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Dietary cholesterol has been proposed as a potential mediator of the transition from steatosis to NASH. Guinea pigs are similar to humans in terms of hepatic cholesterol metabolism and were implemented in three studies to explore its contribution to NAFLD. In study one male guinea pigs …

Probabilistic And Dynamical Models Of Belief Update: Effects Of Experimentally Induced Implicit Bias, Stephanie Petrusz Aug 2013

Probabilistic And Dynamical Models Of Belief Update: Effects Of Experimentally Induced Implicit Bias, Stephanie Petrusz

Doctoral Dissertations

Organisms undertake actions on the basis of perceptions. Perceptions serve as the basis for what an agent takes to be the case; that is, for the agent’s beliefs. However, the idea of belief is freighted with notions of fallibility and subjectivity, since belief is often considered insofar as it is distinct from knowledge. Here, an attempt is made to link belief more closely with perception and action. This linkage is shown by considering the role belief plays in determining behavior, which is distinct from the role belief plays in language-based philosophical accounts of content and intention. These two notions …

Traversing Swanton Road, 13th Ed., James A. West Aug 2013

Traversing Swanton Road, 13th Ed., James A. West

Academic, Government & Associated Organizational Research Resources

Situated at the northwest end of Santa Cruz County and occupying circa 30 square miles of sharply contrasted terrain, the Scott Creek Watershed concentrates within its geomorphological boundaries, at least 10-12% of California's flora, both native and introduced. Paradoxically, the use/abuse that the watershed has sustained over the past 140+ years, has not necessarily diminished the biodiversity and perhaps parallels the naturally disruptive but biologically energizing processes (fire, flooding, landslides and erosion), which have also been historically documented for the area for +60 years. This is an early edition of an extensive document by James A. West. Please visit the …

Justadvice: Studying Law In Snapshots, Brenda Bratton Blom, Leigh Maddox Aug 2013

Justadvice: Studying Law In Snapshots, Brenda Bratton Blom, Leigh Maddox

Faculty Scholarship

Access to legal services continues to be a critical need in the United States. Clinical programs in law schools are part of responding to the demand for these services, but often face the challenge of filling gaps left by larger programs serving the poor or responding to unique legal needs. JustAdvice was designed to provide limited advice to a broad range of people with legal needs, unbundling those services where possible. The story of the development, implementation and transformation of the program into a teaching, triage and referral system that importantly links multiple organizations and services is the core of …

Flavonol-Rich Dark Cocoa Significantly Decreases Plasma Endothelin-1 And Improves Cognition In Urban Children, Partha S. Mukherjee Aug 2013

Flavonol-Rich Dark Cocoa Significantly Decreases Plasma Endothelin-1 And Improves Cognition In Urban Children, Partha S. Mukherjee

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Air pollution exposures are linked to systemic inflammation, cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality, neuroinflammation and neuropathology in young urbanites. In particular, most Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) children exhibit subtle cognitive deficits, and neuropathology studies show 40% of them exhibiting frontal tau hyperphosphorylation and 51% amyloid-β diffuse plaques (compared to 0% in low pollution control children). We assessed whether a short cocoa intervention can be effective in decreasing plasma endothelin 1 (ET-1) and/or inflammatory mediators in MCMA children. Thirty gram of dark cocoa with 680 mg of total flavonols were given daily for 10.11 ± 3.4 days (range 9–24 …

Comparative Gene Analysis And Prediction Of Innate Immunity And Apoptosis Machinery In Hydrothermal Vent Tubeworms, Corey M. Bunce Aug 2013

Comparative Gene Analysis And Prediction Of Innate Immunity And Apoptosis Machinery In Hydrothermal Vent Tubeworms, Corey M. Bunce

Master's Theses

Siboglinid tubeworms are an emerging model system for symbiosis in extreme conditions. At deep-sea hydrothermal vents in the Pacific Ocean, they harbor a chemoautotrophic symbiont in a specialized organ, the trophosome, where the bacteria carry out primary production via oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds. The trophosome of siboglinid worms is suggested to be tightly regulated, symbiont-responsive, and developmentally homeostatic. The purported mechanism involves a cellular proliferative or apoptotic response to bacterial signals, environmental cues, or nutrition. Though these processes are well understood in more amenable model systems, there has been little work uncovering the tubeworm’s genetic potential for sensing and …

Experimental Demonstration Of Accelerated Extinction In Source-Sink Metapopulations, John M. Drake, Blaine D. Griffen Aug 2013

Experimental Demonstration Of Accelerated Extinction In Source-Sink Metapopulations, John M. Drake, Blaine D. Griffen

Faculty Publications

Population extinction is a fundamental ecological process which may be aggravated by the exchange of organisms between productive (source) and unproductive (sink) habitat patches. The extent to which such source-sink exchange affects extinction rates is unknown. We conducted an experiment in which metapopulation effects could be distinguished from source-sink effects in laboratory populations of Daphnia magna. Time-to-extinction in this experiment was maximized at intermediate levels of habitat fragmentation, which is consistent with a minority of theoretical models. These results provided a baseline for comparison with experimental treatments designed to detect effects of concentrating resources in source patches. These treatments showed …

Menopause – A Time For Reflection, Eve Sicurella Aug 2013

Menopause – A Time For Reflection, Eve Sicurella

Journal of International Women's Studies

A woman’s post-reproductive years can bring the greatest challenges of her life as physical and psychological changes compel examination of her new role in life. The author’s own experience of this leads her to reflect on cultural perspectives and healing practices that may impact the individual experience of menopause. In the USA, physical symptoms often have been managed by hormone replacement therapy (HRT) while the psychological changes, including the subtleties of what it means to be a (re)productive part of society have just begun to be addressed. In a holistic model, factors having a positive influence on a woman’s experience …

The Rural Woman's Constraints To Participation In Rural Organizations, Maryam Tanwir, Tayyab Safdar Aug 2013

The Rural Woman's Constraints To Participation In Rural Organizations, Maryam Tanwir, Tayyab Safdar

Journal of International Women's Studies

Although women play a central role in the rural economy through their contribution to the agriculture production process, their equitable participation in rural organizations (ROs) remains minimal. Furthermore their role is decision making and in leadership positions within these organizations remains negligible. This disproportionate mismatch in participation is not only detrimental for women but also has negative effects on the household and on the rural economy. Combining insights from various secondary sources, the paper introduces of a new conceptual metrics around the discourse of participation. Based on this conceptualization of the term “participation”, the paper attempts to provide a critical …

Microbial Gut Diversity Of Africanized And European Honey Bee Larval Instars, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Sandra M. Rehan, Kirk E. Anderson Aug 2013

Microbial Gut Diversity Of Africanized And European Honey Bee Larval Instars, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Sandra M. Rehan, Kirk E. Anderson

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The first step in understanding gut microbial ecology is determining the presence and potential niche breadth of associated microbes. While the core gut bacteria of adult honey bees is becoming increasingly apparent, there is very little and inconsistent information concerning symbiotic bacterial communities in honey bee larvae. The larval gut is the target of highly pathogenic bacteria and fungi, highlighting the need to understand interactions between typical larval gut flora, nutrition and disease progression. Here we show that the larval gut is colonized by a handful of bacterial groups previously described from guts of adult honey bees or other pollinators. …

Pixe Analysis Of Human Hair From An Egyptian Cemetery, Rafael Casellas, Dr. Nolan F. Mangelson, Dr. Lawrence B. Rees

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Human hair is considered to be a minor excretory organ for trace elements. The literature suggests that in some cases trace elemental concentration varies in different races of people. In addition, hair analysis has been used to assess nutritional status in humans. These characteristics attracted archeologists because of the potential of using hair analysis to understand past cultures.1

by

Mark Henson

Doctor of Philosophy in Energy, Environmental and Chemical Engineering

Washington University in St. Louis, 2013

Professor Pratim Biswas, Chair

Biodiesel produced from microalgal lipids is being extensively researched as an alternative to petroleum–derived diesel. Literature reports of prior modeling to estimate the likely energy and carbon footprints and manufacturing cost of microalgal biodiesel are inconclusive, with wide ranges for performance measures such as Net Energy Return and manufacturing cost. The goals of this research are to develop an integrated techno–economic life cycle inventory model of microalgal biodiesel …
