Anxiety Sensitivity As A Moderator For Ptsd Mediated Combat Exposure In Predicting Suicide Risk In A Military Sample, Barry Donovan Eye
Anxiety Sensitivity As A Moderator For Ptsd Mediated Combat Exposure In Predicting Suicide Risk In A Military Sample, Barry Donovan Eye
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Suicide took almost 40,000 U.S. lives in 2011, with military rates exceeding the general population (and rising). Anxiety sensitivity (AS; the fear of fear) includes three components: physical, cognitive, and social. Recent studies indicate a connection between AS and suicidality through the Interpersonal-Psychological Theory of Suicide (IPTS). Separate research has proposed that the development of severe psychopathology, like posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and suicide, may be moderated by AS. The present study considered this mechanism from an IPTS perspective with a cross-sectional sample of veterans and active duty members from a Veterans Affairs clinic database. Regression models tested whether physical …

Synthetic Polymeric Carbohydrates Recognized Toxoplasma Gondii Tachyzoites And Induced Early Phagocytosis By Macrophages, Souzan Hussain Eassa
Theses and Dissertations
Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii your words (T. gondii your words) that affects most types of warm-blooded vertebrate cells. Up to one third of the humans population in the world is chronically infected by this parasite. Human and animals at risk for toxoplasmosis include fetuses, newborns, and immunologically impaired patients. To date, there is no vaccine available and no drug has a successful effective against chronic form of toxoplasmosis. Recent Toxoplasma your words diagnostic methods showed high false positive results and cannot detect the parasite in the early infection stage. Early diagnosis of …

Objectives: Quick service restaurant (QSR) television advertisements for children’s meals were compared with adult advertisements from the same companies to assess whether self-regulatory pledges for food advertisements to children had been implemented. Methods: All nationally televised advertisements for the top 25 US QSR restaurants from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010 were obtained and viewed to identify those advertising meals for children and these advertisements were compared with adult advertisements from the same companies. Content coding included visual and audio assessment of branding, toy premiums, movie tie-ins, and depictions of food. For image size comparisons, the diagonal length of …
Dissecting The Mechanisms And The Nutritional Requirements Of The Expansion Of Normal And Tumorigenic Intestinal Stem Cell Lineages In Drosophila Melanogaster, Wen-Chih Lee
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Organisms are constantly challenged by injury and senescence. To replenish lost cells, adult tissue must contain a cellular reserve to maintain homeostasis. For example, adult stem cells exhibit two unique properties, self-renewal and potency, that make them well suited for this role. Tight regulatory control of stem cell properties is critical to maintain homeostatic balance; misregulation often leads to tumors or diseases. Recently, homeostasis of the intestinal epithelium has been shown to depend on a population of molecular defined intestinal stem cells: ISCs) in both Drosophila and mammals. However, the regulatory mechanisms controlling ISC behaviors remain poorly defined. We took …
The C Terminus Of Ftsz Regulates Ftsz Assembly Dynamics And Is Required For Bacillus Subtilis Cell Division, Pj Buske
All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)
Bacterial cell division is initiated by the assembly of the tubulin homolog FtsZ into a ring: Z ring) at the nascent division site. Once formed, the Z ring serves as a scaffold for recruitment of the division machinery and helps provide some of the constrictive force for cytokinesis. In vitro FtsZ undergoes GTP-dependent assembly where individual subunits form single-stranded protofilaments and laterally-associated filament bundles. How the filamentous FtsZ structures observed in vitro translate into the behavior of the Z ring in vivo remains a fundamental question. In this dissertation I establish important roles for the previously uncharacterized FtsZ C-terminal domains …

To address high STI rates in their aboriginal communities, the Tłı̨chǫ of the Northwest Territories adopted a collaborative participatory research approach to sexual health based on four key stages of development. First was community initiation and engagement, where local leaders identified a priority need and began community discussions around sexual health. Secondly, identifying that existing government statistics did not provide them with adequate information, the Tlicho Community Services Agency partnered with the University of Alberta and CIETcanda to conduct a baseline study in all four Tlicho communities, designed and administered by community-based researchers. Third, a community action research team (CART) …

The Effect Of Selenium On Nuclear Factor-Κb And Androgen Receptor Expression In Human Prostate Cancer Cells, Daniel Tandberg, Dr. Merrill J. Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
According to the American Cancer Society prostate cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer, as well as the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States. The trace mineral and essential nutrient selenium has been established as a promising chemopreventive element for prostate cancer. Plant foods are the best source of selenium; however, the selenium content of plants varies significantly based on the soil in which it was grown in. This study attempted to provide further insight into the molecular mechanism by which selenium effects cancer development. Specifically we looked at the expression of the Nuclear …

Antioxidant Interactions In Strawberries Exhibit Synergism And Antagonism, Joshua Reber, Dr. Tory Parker
Antioxidant Interactions In Strawberries Exhibit Synergism And Antagonism, Joshua Reber, Dr. Tory Parker
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Epidemiological evidence has shown, on average, that those who consume more servings of fruits and vegetables have lower relative risk for cardiovascular disease and some cancers (Lee et al., 1991; Hertog et al., 1993; van’t Veer et al., 2000). As a result, a great deal of research has explored the components of fruit (Robards et al., 1999), with primary emphasis being placed on compounds in the phenolic category. This focus developed from the high in vitro antioxidant capacity of these compounds and the potential for them to protect lipids, protein and DNA from oxidative damage (van’t Veer et al., 2000). …

The Effect Of Mechanical Tenderization On The Internal Cooked Color Of Beef Eye Of Round Steak, Amanda Nordquist, Maria Carter, Dr. Frost Steele, Dr. Laura Jefferies
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of mechanical tenderization on the internal cooked color of beef steak, and specifically to determine if it exhibits premature browning during cooking because of the mechanical tenderization. The microbiological safety of mechanically tenderized meat has been questioned due to its implication in six recent outbreaks of E. coli O157:H7. Current research suggests that tenderization may increase the risk of internal penetration and cross-contamination of E. coli. Consumer evaluation of prematurely browned meat would lead to undercooking; increasing the risks associated with consuming contaminated meat. In this study, beef steaks were …

The endodermis acts as a "second skin" in plant roots by providing the cellular control necessary for the selective entry of water and solutes into the vascular system. To enable such control, Casparian strips span the cell wall of adjacent endodermal cells to form a tight junction that blocks extracellular diffusion across the endodermis. This junction is composed of lignin that is polymerized by oxidative coupling of monolignols through the action of a NADPH oxidase and peroxidases. Casparian strip domain proteins (CASPs) correctly position this biosynthetic machinery by forming a protein scaffold in the plasma membrane at the site where …

The Effects Of Selenium, Resveratrol, And A Resveratrol Derivative On Human Prostate Cancer Lncap And 22rv1 Cell Lines, Jason Morris, Dr. Merrill J. Christensen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The goal of this project was to determine whether there was a synergistic anticarcinogenic effect between selenium and resveratrol, both of which had independently demonstrated the ability to inhibit prostate cancer cell proliferation. Additionally, the project also sought to determine whether a less soluble derivative of resveratrol, synthesized at BYU by Dr. Merrit B. Andrus of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, maintained the anticarcinogenic potency of resveratrol, and what were the effects of this derivative in conjunction with selenium.

Nucleic Acid Analysis Of Black Dot Infected Russet Norkotah Potato As Influenced By Environmental Potassium, Mason Kearns, Dr. Brad Geary
Nucleic Acid Analysis Of Black Dot Infected Russet Norkotah Potato As Influenced By Environmental Potassium, Mason Kearns, Dr. Brad Geary
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The purpose of our project was first to apply polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology in quantifying the infection levels of a disease in potato, and also to determine the result of varying potassium nutrition on fungal infection levels. The method currently used to assay infection is the root colonization assay (RCA) which produces less accurate results than PCR quantification. We hypothesized that a Potassium concentration of 80mg/L would be most beneficial for resisting the pathogen. The project began in January 2009, finished in May 2009 and was presented at the 2009 annual American Phytopathological Society meeting in Portland Oregon in …

Effect Of High Fat Diet With Aicar Treatment On Mitochondrial Biogenesis Of Male Rats, David Mills, Chad Hancock
Effect Of High Fat Diet With Aicar Treatment On Mitochondrial Biogenesis Of Male Rats, David Mills, Chad Hancock
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The original goal for my project was to study how a high-fat diet affects insulin resistance in slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers in rats. We hypothesized that administering a drug named acipamox, which lowers cellular free fatty acid levels, would restore insulin sensitivity in both slow twitch and fast twitch muscle fibers. Previously published research showed that acipamox restored insulin sensitivity in slow twitch fibers (1) but this study did not address what happened in the fast twitch muscle fibers.

As world population increases the demand on agriculture to produce a sufficient amount of food has dramatically increased. However, agricultural lands in the US and worldwide are quickly disappearing to further urban development. Therefore it is essential that agricultural practices are reviewed and improved to insure a maximum yield from minimum resources.
