A Small Molecule Inhibitor Of Redox-Regulated Protein Translocation Into Mitochondria, Deepa V. Dabir Jan 2013

A Small Molecule Inhibitor Of Redox-Regulated Protein Translocation Into Mitochondria, Deepa V. Dabir

Biology Faculty Works

The mitochondrial disulfide relay system of Mia40 and Erv1/ALR facilitates import of the small translocase of the inner membrane (Tim) proteins and cysteine-rich proteins. A chemical screen identified small molecules that inhibit Erv1 oxidase activity, thereby facilitating dissection of the disulfide relay system in yeast and vertebrate mitochondria. One molecule, mitochondrial protein import blockers from the Carla Koehler laboratory (MitoBloCK-6), attenuated the import of Erv1 substrates into yeast mitochondria and inhibited oxidation of Tim13 and Cmc1 in in vitro reconstitution assays. In addition, MitoBloCK-6 revealed an unexpected role for Erv1 in the carrier import pathway, namely transferring substrates from the …

Conflicting Group Meanings Of Territorial Rights In Central Mindanao: Muslim–Christian Social Representations Of Land Entitlement, Cristina Jayme Montiel, Marshaley J. Baquiano, Charlie M. Inzon Jan 2013

Conflicting Group Meanings Of Territorial Rights In Central Mindanao: Muslim–Christian Social Representations Of Land Entitlement, Cristina Jayme Montiel, Marshaley J. Baquiano, Charlie M. Inzon

Psychology Department Faculty Publications

Using a social representations lens, we examined subjective meanings of land entitlements in Central Mindanao among Muslims and Christians. In Study 1, we collected survey data from 231 students from the University of Southern Mindanao in Central Mindanao, asking them: ‘If you were to tell the story of land ownership in Cotabato, what three topics would you want to include in your story?’ Results of our hierarchical evocation analysis show that Christians are concerned with direct conflicts or actual intergroup confrontations while Muslims emphasise land issues. Study 2 implemented Focauldian Discursive Analysis to evaluate two separate focused group discussions by …

Three Essays On Fiscal Stress And Financial Stability In State Government Finance, James B. Gibson Jan 2013

Three Essays On Fiscal Stress And Financial Stability In State Government Finance, James B. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

State government finance is a substantial endeavor in the United States. The management of a multitude of revenues and expenditures often involves some level of fiscal stress. In an age of increased public scrutiny, policymakers must be mindful of possible causes of fiscal stress, and the policy options available to mitigate fiscal stress and increase financial stability. This dissertation contains three essays that examine different elements of fiscal stress, and in some cases, the applicable policy responses.

Chapter two examines rainy day funds and their countercyclical goal of reducing recessionary fiscal stress. This essay takes a different approach from much …

Three Essays On Local Government Debt, Robert Greer Jan 2013

Three Essays On Local Government Debt, Robert Greer

Theses and Dissertations--Public Policy and Administration

The local government tax-exempt debt market is a growing, and complex, sector of public finance. As local governments turn to debt financing the factors that contribute to interest costs of that debt have become important considerations for local government officials and politicians. Governance at the local level involves a network of overlapping governments some of which share a tax base. This system of overlapping governments that share a tax base are subject to externalities that arise from taxation, expenditures, and debt. These externalities are usually analyzed in terms of tax or expenditure reactions, but there are implications for local government …

Social Cognitive Theory Vs. Social Comparison Theory: Examining The Relationship Between Social Influence And Weight Loss, Emily Grigg Jan 2013

Social Cognitive Theory Vs. Social Comparison Theory: Examining The Relationship Between Social Influence And Weight Loss, Emily Grigg

Masters Theses

This qualitative study investigated the impact of social influence on weight loss, more specifically, the internal and external elements that effect response and success of those who are trying to lose weight. The research focused on three questions: (1) How great of an influence does self-efficacy have in weight loss success? (2) How great of an influence does social comparison have in weight loss success? (3) Which factor has the largest impact on weight loss: self-efficacy, peer efficacy, or positive social support, or negative social support? Data was collected by the researcher conducting semi-structured interviews. These interview were conducted with …

Comprehensive Investigation Of The Transcription Profiles Of Solanum Lycopersicum Treated With Two Cerato-Platanins From Botrytis Cinerea, Talitha Caudle Jan 2013

Comprehensive Investigation Of The Transcription Profiles Of Solanum Lycopersicum Treated With Two Cerato-Platanins From Botrytis Cinerea, Talitha Caudle

Dissertations

Botrytis cinerea is a severe plant pathogen that destroys more than 200 crop species worldwide. During early infection, B. cinerea secretes a large store of proteins onto the host surface, many of which cause acute necrosis, senescence, and the loss of cell wall integrity. Recently, cerato-platanin (CP) family member BCSNOD1 was found among fungal secretory products. A subsequent expression profile of B. cinerea-infected strawberry showed the early induction of BCSNOD1 and the CP homologue BCSNOD2. The function of CPs is poorly understood, although evidence suggests a role in plant-pathogen interactions. To characterize CP during B. cinerea infection, the interactions of …

Effects Of Plasma Jet Parameters, Ionization, Thermal Conduction, And Radiation On Stagnation Conditions Of An Imploding Plasma Liner, Miloš Stanić Jan 2013

Effects Of Plasma Jet Parameters, Ionization, Thermal Conduction, And Radiation On Stagnation Conditions Of An Imploding Plasma Liner, Miloš Stanić

Dissertations

The disciplines of High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) and Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) are characterized by hypervelocity implosions and strong shocks. The Plasma Liner Experiment (PLX) is focused on reaching HEDP and/or ICF relevant regimes in excess of 1 Mbar peak pressure by the merging and implosion of discrete plasma jets, as a potentially efficient path towards these extreme conditions in a laboratory. In this work we have presented the first 3D simulations of plasma liner, formation, and implosion by the merging of discrete plasma jets in which ionization, thermal conduction, and radiation are all included in the physics model. …

Development Of Unsaturated Flow Functions For Low Impact Development Stormwater Management Systems Filter Media And Flow Routines For Hydrological Modeling Of Permeable Pavement Systems, Iulia Aurelia Barbu Jan 2013

Development Of Unsaturated Flow Functions For Low Impact Development Stormwater Management Systems Filter Media And Flow Routines For Hydrological Modeling Of Permeable Pavement Systems, Iulia Aurelia Barbu

Doctoral Dissertations

Low Impact Development - Stormwater Management (LID-SWM) systems are relatively new technologies that were developed in order to meet the water quality criteria imposed by the Clean Water Act. LID-SWM is also used to replicate the natural hydrology of developed sites. However, the hydrological benefits of LID systems cannot be accurately predicted with the existing simulation models. Currently used software packages represent LID systems as storage units and do not specifically represent water routing through the systems' hydraulically restrictive sublayers. Since the LID's functionality at system level is not fully understood, the relationships of design variables and the systems' hydrological …

Father Stanisław Musiał, S.J.: The Courage To Confront, Agata Wyszynski Jan 2013

Father Stanisław Musiał, S.J.: The Courage To Confront, Agata Wyszynski

Masters Essays

How does one surpass the ordinary, especially when one’s ordinary surroundings disclose prejudice and hostility? In her essay entitled, On Relationship as a Key to Interreligious Dialogue, Doris Donnelly observed that there is “...goodness to be seen in ordinary people doing ordinary things under extraordinary circumstances — people whose lives are a powerful witness to their faith.”1 One such ordinary person was Father Stanisław Musiał, S.J., whose Jesuit education, friendship with Jews, and participation in dialogue and negotiations with Jews allowed him to transcend the anti-Semitic culture of the post-World War II epoch in Poland.

Effect Of Telomerase Inhibitors On Malignant Breast Cancer Cells, Alexander J. Fisch, Osman V. Patel Jan 2013

Effect Of Telomerase Inhibitors On Malignant Breast Cancer Cells, Alexander J. Fisch, Osman V. Patel

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

Current therapies have nominal effect on the most intrusive-type of breast cancers (triple-negative) that have a higher tendency to metastasize or recur. Recent studies reveal an enzyme, telomerase, as key for unlimited cell growth (immortality) and replication. Therefore, our objectives were to assess (i) short- and (ii) long-term effects of a novel anti-telomerase agent (GV6) developed at our institute and compare it to a known analogue, BIBR1532 on MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cells. Cell viability was measured on days 5, 9, 14, 18 and 27 after treatment with GV6 (n=4), BIBR1532 (n=4) or Solvent alone (Control, n=3). The number of …

Can We Say More Now? A Closer Look At Online Public Opinion Change In China, Ran Duan Jan 2013

Can We Say More Now? A Closer Look At Online Public Opinion Change In China, Ran Duan

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

This study examined the pattern of online public opinion change in China by investigating the top one hit blog and its following commentaries of every day from July 2009 to March 2012 on a famous Chinese website, and then discussed potential factors that affected the formation of online public opinion. The extent of freedom of online public opinion during this period presented regular fluctuations. Whether criticisms were registered by commentators was influenced by four factors. First and most important, the negative tone of bloggers increased criticism and the positive tone decreased criticism, which shows that the news that flows from …

Examination Of The Use Of Online And Offline Networks By Housing Social Movement Organizations, Jessica N. Kropczynski Jan 2013

Examination Of The Use Of Online And Offline Networks By Housing Social Movement Organizations, Jessica N. Kropczynski

Theses and Dissertations--Sociology

Resource mobilization theory and political opportunity theory are often used to describe separate portions of social movements. This dissertation proposes a combined model of these two theoretical perspectives which describes how social movement organizations effectively engage in social marketing both online and offline. The field of social marketing highlights the utility of standard commercial marketing practices to achieve non-commercial goals. I argue that, while commercial marketing practices may benefit social movement organizations and are more cost effective given emerging technology, momentum for gathering resources, will be stifled unless a political opportunity presents itself. Guided by theory about the ways that …
