The Perils Of Social Reading, Neil M. Richards
The Perils Of Social Reading, Neil M. Richards
Scholarship@WashULaw
Our law currently treats records of our reading habits under two contradictory rules: rules mandating confidentiality and rules permitting disclosure. Recently, the rise of the social Internet has created more of these records and more pressures on when and how they should be shared. Companies like Facebook, in collaboration with many newspapers, have ushered in the era of “social reading,” in which what we read may be “frictionlessly shared” with our friends and acquaintances. Disclosure and sharing are on the rise.
This Article sounds a cautionary note about social reading and frictionless sharing. Social reading might have some appeal, but …

Internationalization As De-Westernization Of The Curriculum: The Case Of Journalism At An Australian University, Rhonda Breit, Levi Obijiofor, Richard Fitzgerald
Internationalization As De-Westernization Of The Curriculum: The Case Of Journalism At An Australian University, Rhonda Breit, Levi Obijiofor, Richard Fitzgerald
Graduate School of Media and Communications
Internationalization of the curriculum points to the interdependent and interconnected (globalized) world in which higher education operates. However, while international awareness is crucial to the study of journalism, in practice this often means an Anglo-American curriculum based around Western principles of journalism education and training that are deeply rooted in Western values and traditions. This tendency to privilege Western thought, practice, and values obscures from view other journalism practices and renders Western models of journalism desirable, replicable, and transplantable to any part of the world. This article discusses the engagement of a small group of staff in the process of …
Awareness At A Threshold: Urban Exchange Through Public Space, Matthew Spears
Awareness At A Threshold: Urban Exchange Through Public Space, Matthew Spears
Architecture Theses and Projects
The moment of arrival becomes an important opportunity for cultural exchange in an urban environment. This exchange can be both the physical exchange between two places or it can be the experiential exchange between two or more disparate groups. These moments of exchange are an elusive experience for visitors as well as residents and are easily forgotten. Expressing the space of the traveler, an interactive space between locals and visitors, can raise cultural awareness between the most prominent groups as well as the marginalized groups, creating a more cohesive urban imaginary. The major exchange hub in Seattle, Washington speaks to …
Humility And Homelessness: A Housing Continuum, Jessica Macdonald
Humility And Homelessness: A Housing Continuum, Jessica Macdonald
Architecture Theses and Projects
The design of a housing continuum in Burlington provides a variety of support environments. These different housing environments are all designed within the downtown area, providing access to public transportation, open part space and employment opportunities. Support services play a huge role in an individual’s process to self-sufficiency. Many social services are already located in the downtown area, however the relationship between living space and support space is important. This thesis introduces three housing typologies as architectural interventions on three under-utilized downtown sites, focusing on the relationship between the individual and the common.
Predicting Sexual Satisfaction From Self-Objectification And Alcohol Consumption, Nicole M. Nelson
Predicting Sexual Satisfaction From Self-Objectification And Alcohol Consumption, Nicole M. Nelson
Psychology Theses
This study was conducted to examine if gender, self-objectification and alcohol consumption were predictors of sexual satisfaction. It was expected that females would self-objectify more than males and self-objectification would negatively relate to satisfaction. It was expected that drinking alcohol would also negatively relate to satisfaction. Undergraduate participants (n=235) who reported a heterosexual sexual encounter within the past three months completed an online survey. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted separately for males and females. It was found that gender was not a predictor of satisfaction; self-objectification did however negatively relate to sexual satisfaction for males and females, and alcohol …

[In the absence of an abstract the beginning of the Introduction is provided.] The first coordinated hunger strike at the Guantanamo Bay detention facility began in February of 2002, and the last of these strikers were the first to be fed against their will by the United States Department of Defense (Dao 2002). During the June/ July 2005 strike, approximately 50 of the 52 to 200 detainees on strike were fed intravenously (Gutierrez 2005: 9, 11). When the strike recommenced in August as many as 20 of its 76 to 210 participants were being kept at the camp hospital and …

Finding The Right Fit: Assessing The Impact Of Traditional V. Large Lecture/Small Lab Course Formats On A General Education Course, Susan M. Wildermuth, Tammy French, Edward Fredrick
International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning
This study explores alternative approaches for teaching general education courses burdened with serving extremely large enrollments. It compares the effectiveness of a self-contained course in which each course section is taught by one instructor to a large lecture/small lab format in which all course enrollees attend one large lecture section and then are divided into several small lab sections for more intensive training experiences. The study uses the Introduction to Human Communication course at the authors’ university. Two hundred and seventy-five students enrolled in nine large lecture/small lab sections of the course and two hundred and fifteen students enrolled in …

Government Regulation: From Independence To Dependency, Part One, Steven Alan Samson
Government Regulation: From Independence To Dependency, Part One, Steven Alan Samson
Faculty Publications and Presentations
What Robert Bellah calls "expressive individualism" has led to unprecedented social legislation in America and expanded government employment since the 1960s, helping to produce a generous supply of public services, policy entrepreneurs, and clientele groups. The legal scholar Lawrence M Friedman notes that "the right to be 'oneself,' to choose oneself, is placed in a special and privileged position." As a consequence, "achievement is defined in subjective, personal terms, rather than in objective, social terms." When the claims of expressive individualism are considered in tandem with the increasing reach of the modern social service state, a case may be made …
A "Novel" Approach To Recreational Reading: Creating A Virtual Collection On A Shoestring, Sarah P C Dahlen, Steve G. Watkins
A "Novel" Approach To Recreational Reading: Creating A Virtual Collection On A Shoestring, Sarah P C Dahlen, Steve G. Watkins
Library Faculty Publications and Presentations
Reading for recreation has been tied to academic achievement and lifelong learning, but not all academic libraries have the capacity to offer a separate recreational reading collection for their users. A low/no-cost option is to create a virtual recreational reading collection that allows patrons to browse for print titles by genre or book cover, much as they would in a bookstore or physical collection. The authors recently implemented this solution at their institution by dynamically compiling records of existing titles belonging to genres that are often of interest to recreational readers. This article addresses the justification for investing staff time …
Visual Analysis Of E-Textbooks For Senior High School In Indonesia, Ouda Ena
Visual Analysis Of E-Textbooks For Senior High School In Indonesia, Ouda Ena
Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the visual images used as illustrations in the English electronic textbooks for grades ten, eleven, and twelve in Indonesia. Qualitative visual content analysis was employed as the methodology of the research. The analysis focused on whether these e-textbooks accommodated the religious, gender, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity of the students. These four aspects of cultural diversity that influenced students learning in Indonesian contexts were crucial to examine because the students were so diverse as results of the geographical conditions and historical background of Indonesia. Eight English e-textbooks were examined. First, the result showed …

Where Is Equal Protection? Applying Strict Scrutiny To Use Of Race By Law Enforcement, Evan Gerstmann
Where Is Equal Protection? Applying Strict Scrutiny To Use Of Race By Law Enforcement, Evan Gerstmann
Political Science and International Relations Faculty Works
This article seeks to move the debate over the use of race by law enforcement beyond the current focus on racial profiling, arguing that the courts must apply strict scrutiny to all use of race by law enforcement, including the stopping and questioning of persons based on suspect descriptions that include race. The current debate implicitly (and sometimes explicitly) assumes that law enforcement’s use of race can be divided into unconstitutional racial profiling and all other uses of races, which are presumptively legitimate. However, when other institutions rely upon race, such as public universities implementing affirmative action programs, courts automatically …
Injunctive Peer Misperceptions And The Mediation Of Self-Approval On Risk For Driving After Drinking Among College Students, Shannon R. Kenney, Joseph W. Labrie, Andrew Lac
Injunctive Peer Misperceptions And The Mediation Of Self-Approval On Risk For Driving After Drinking Among College Students, Shannon R. Kenney, Joseph W. Labrie, Andrew Lac
Heads Up!
Of the alcohol-related risks faced by college students, it is arguable that none presents a greater public health hazard than driving after drinking (DAD). The present study examined the extent to which students’ injunctive misperceptions toward DAD predicted the likelihood to engage in DAD and how this relation was mediated by self-approval of DAD. Participants were 2,848 college students (59.1% female, 64.6% Caucasian) from two U.S. West Coast universities who completed confidential web-based surveys assessing DAD beliefs and behaviors. Results revealed that respondents tended to overestimate their peers’ approval toward DAD. Moreover, the subgroups likely to engage in DAD—men, 21+ …

Rhetorical Pragmatism And Histories Of New Media: Rorty On Kierkegaard On The Internet, Steven J. Mailloux
Rhetorical Pragmatism And Histories Of New Media: Rorty On Kierkegaard On The Internet, Steven J. Mailloux
English Faculty Works
This essay begins with Hubert Dreyfus's Kierkegaardian critique of the Internet and then turns to Richard Rorty's neo-pragmatist response, an unpublished text found in the Richard Rorty Papers. After considering these contrasting perspectives, the author proposes a third view, arguing that a rhetorical pragmatist should borrow from both Dreyfus's critique and Rorty's defense. The Internet does enable media users who are unthinkingly complacent in their passionate commitments as well as those who are complacently unthinking in their detached, everyday busyness. But the Internet also provides its own unique opportunities for thinking critically and for challenging complacency. After proposing this more …

Metals And Bacteria Partitioning To Various Size Particles In Ballona Creek Storm Water Runoff, J. S. Brown, E. D. Stein, D. Ackerman, John H. Dorsey, J. Lyon, P. M. Carter
Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship
Many storm water best management practice (BMP) devices function primarily by capturing particulate matter to take advantage of the well‐documented association between storm water particles and pollutants. The hydrodynamic separation or settling methods used by most BMP devices are most effective at capturing medium to large particles; however, these may not be the most predominant particles associated with urban runoff. The present study examined particle size distribution in storm water runoff from an urban watershed in southern California and investigated the pollutant–particle associations of metals (Cu, Pb, Ni, and Zn) and bacteria (enterococci and Escherichia coli). During small storm …

The Next Generation Of Scientists: Examining The Experiences Of Graduate Students In Network-Level Social-Ecological Science, Michele Romolini, S. Record, R. Garvoille, Y. Marusenko, R. S. Geiger
Center for Urban Resilience Scholarship
By integrating the research and resources of hundreds of scientists from dozens of institutions, network-level science is fast becoming one scientific model of choice to address complex problems. In the pursuit to confront pressing environmental issues such as climate change, many scientists, practitioners, policy makers, and institutions are promoting network-level research that integrates the social and ecological sciences. To understand how this scientific trend is unfolding among rising scientists, we examined how graduate students experienced one such emergent social-ecological research initiative, Integrated Science for Society and Environment, within the large-scale, geographically distributed Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network. Through workshops, …

Development Of Alternative Host Models To Assess Virulence Potential Of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus, Jeffrey Sun
Master's Theses and Capstones
V. parahaemolyticus infection from ingesting shellfish is a global problem and incidence rates are on the rise in the U.S. Current detection methods are ineffective due to the lack of definite pathogenic marker thus studies to elucidate virulence mechanism are crucial and impeded by the lack of an efficient high-throughput model that emulate disease. Of multiple alternative models investigates, only C. elegans was able to discern different virulence potential among V. parahaemolyticus strains. In addition, the pandemic strain had greater colonization ability when in direct competition with the pre-pandemic strain in C.elegans intestine. A transposon insertion mutant library was generated …

Yeast Eif4b Binds To The Head Of The 40s Ribosomal Subunit And Promotes Mrna Recruitment Through Its N-Terminal And Internal Repeat Domains, Sarah F. Mitchell
Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works
Eukaryotic translation initiation factor (eIF)4B stimulates recruitment of mRNA to the 43S ribosomal pre-initiation complex (PIC). Yeast eIF4B (yeIF4B), shown previously to bind single-stranded (ss) RNA, consists of an N-terminal domain (NTD), predicted to be unstructured in solution; an RNA-recognition motif (RRM); an unusual domain comprised of seven imperfect repeats of 26 amino acids; and a C-terminal domain. Although the mechanism of yeIF4B action has remained obscure, most models have suggested central roles for its RRM and ssRNA-binding activity. We have dissected the functions of yeIF4B's domains and show that the RRM and its ssRNA-binding activity are dispensable in vitro …
Teaching With Ignatius: Justice In Pedagogical Practice, Jeffrey Wilson
Teaching With Ignatius: Justice In Pedagogical Practice, Jeffrey Wilson
Philosophy Faculty Works
The document Justice in the World, released in 1971 by the World Synod of Bishops, is an excellent basis for thinking about pedagogical practice in Ignatian higher education as a constellation of acts of justice. I describe here my personal experience (as an ambiguously Catholic faculty member) of teaching an upper division ethics course in the core curriculum and contextualize it in terms both of Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises and the 1971 Synod document.
