A Data-Based Method For Harmonising Heterogeneous Data Modelling Techniques Across Data Mining Applications, Kassim S. Mwitondi, Raed A. T. Said

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

We propose an iterative graphical data visualisation algorithm for optimal model selection. The algorithm is implemented on three domain-partitioning techniques - decision trees, neural networks and support vector machines. Each model is trained and tested on the Pima Indians and Bupa Liver Disorders datasets with the performance being assessed in a multi-step process. Firstly, the conventional ROC curves and the Youden Indexare applied to determine the optimal model then sequential moving differences involving the fitted parameters - true and false positives – are extracted and their respective probability density estimations are used to track their variability using the proposed algorithm. …

In-Situ Quantification Of The Interfacial Rheological Response Of Bacterial Biofilms To Environmental Stimuli, Patrick Rühs, Lukas Böni, Gerald Fuller, R. Inglis, Peter Fischer Nov 2013

In-Situ Quantification Of The Interfacial Rheological Response Of Bacterial Biofilms To Environmental Stimuli, Patrick Rühs, Lukas Böni, Gerald Fuller, R. Inglis, Peter Fischer

Biology Department Faculty Works

Understanding the numerous factors that can affect biofilm formation and stability remain poorly understood. One of the major limitations is the accurate measurement of biofilm stability and cohesiveness in real-time when exposed to changing environmental conditions. Here we present a novel method to measure biofilm strength: interfacial rheology. By culturing a range of bacterial biofilms on an air-liquid interface we were able to measure their viscoelastic growth profile during and after biofilm formation and subsequently alter growth conditions by adding surfactants or changing the nutrient composition of the growth medium. We found that different bacterial species had unique viscoelastic growth …

Do Npes Matter? Non-Practicing Entities And Patent Litigation Outcomes, Michael J. Mazzeo, Jonathan H. Ashtor, Samantha Zyontz Nov 2013

Do Npes Matter? Non-Practicing Entities And Patent Litigation Outcomes, Michael J. Mazzeo, Jonathan H. Ashtor, Samantha Zyontz

Faculty Scholarship

It is widely argued that so-called “patent trolls” are corrupting the U.S. patent system and endangering technology innovation and commercialization at large. For example, a recent White House report argued that “trolls” hurt firms of all sizes and advocated for specific policies aimed at curtailing practices thought to be particularly harmful. Yet the existence and extent of any systematic effects of so-called “troll-like” behavior, and the implications of modern patent assertion practices by Non-Practicing Entities (“NPEs”), remains unclear. This article develops novel empirical evidence to inform the debate over NPEs on patent litigation. Specifically, we conduct a large-scale empirical analysis …

Microrna-138 Regulates Hypoxia-Induced Endothelial Cell Dysfunction By Targeting S100a1., Anagha Sen, Shumei Ren, Carolin Lerchenmüller, Jianxin Sun, Norbert Weiss, Patrick Most, Karsten Peppel Nov 2013

Microrna-138 Regulates Hypoxia-Induced Endothelial Cell Dysfunction By Targeting S100a1., Anagha Sen, Shumei Ren, Carolin Lerchenmüller, Jianxin Sun, Norbert Weiss, Patrick Most, Karsten Peppel

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

The Ca(2+) sensor S100A1 is essential for proper endothelial cell (EC) nitric oxide (NO) synthase (eNOS) activation. S100A1 levels are greatly reduced in primary human microvascular ECs subjected to hypoxia, rendering them dysfunctional. However mechanisms that regulate S100A1 levels in ECs are unknown. Here we show that ECs transfected with a S100A1-3' untranslated region (UTR) luciferase reporter construct display significantly reduced gene expression when subjected to low oxygen levels or chemical hypoxia. Bioinformatic analysis suggested that microRNA -138 (MiR-138) could target the 3'UTR of S100A1. Patients with critical limb ischemia (CLI) or mice subjected to femoral artery resection (FAR) displayed …

The Impact Of Downsizing And Efficiency Measures On Anti-Fraud Resources, Marek Palasinski Nov 2013

The Impact Of Downsizing And Efficiency Measures On Anti-Fraud Resources, Marek Palasinski

The Qualitative Report

The main purpose of this study was to explore the impact of downsizing and efficiency measures on two key elements of operational performance - fraud detection and fraud reporting. Qualitative data were obtained from ethnographic observations of two major multinational insurance companies, which were already examined before the Global Financial Crisis, and subjected to an inter - and intra - business comparative analysis of anti - fraud resources. The paper points out a big discrepancy in opinions on the downsizing effects between junior staff and their supervisors. Whereas the latter present them as enabling the business to deal with suspicious …

Using Participatory Observation To Understand Older People’S Experiences: Lessons From The Field, Josephine Tetley

The Qualitative Report

This article describes how participant observation and a reflective diary were used in a study that aimed to explore how three different groups of community dwelling older people experienced and made choices about using, or refusing, a range of health and social care services. The roles of these qualitative methods are highlighted to demonstrate how they enhanced the insights gained during the course of a research study.

Beauty In A Crooked Line, Sarah Ramey Nov 2013

Beauty In A Crooked Line, Sarah Ramey

Theses and Dissertations

Experimentation is the beginning and end of all of my art. I examine the interactions of the materials that are involved in the journey of creativity. Typically, I begin a piece with an irregularly drawn line, using a white crayon to resist the media that I will later apply, thereby creating a negative line. This gestural line becomes an element that helps direct my intuitive mark-making. My process involves masking, using resists, and layering materials. I then remove the layers of media by scraping or sanding them away changing the texture of the paper. I am drawn to media that …

Theses and Dissertations

An exploration of how the creation of groups and interactions between groups impact people in the world. Beginning with an introduction that explores, specifically, how the creation of groups can function in the literary world when they are used as scandals. The introduction focuses on the rise of Poet, Kenneth Goldsmith and his use of Conceptualism to promote his brand. Following the introduction is a poetic exploration of groups and group conflict. It draws on social psychology, sociology as well as instances of violence partially resulting from rivalry between groups.

State Session Freeze Laws—Potential Solution Or Unconstitutional Restriction?, Dru Swaim Nov 2013

State Session Freeze Laws—Potential Solution Or Unconstitutional Restriction?, Dru Swaim

Seattle University Law Review

Since the Citizens United decision in 2010 reduced Congress’s ability to constitutionally regulate money in elections, proponents of campaign finance reform have looked for alternative ways to achieve the goals of greater transparency and reduce the amount of money spent in federal elections. In the three years since Citizens United, the amount of money spent in federal campaigns has increased exponentially. In fact, the total amount of money spent in federal elections has nearly doubled since 2000. Citizens United represents a serious blow to the traditional methods used to restrict the amount of money in politics: limitations on the amounts …

Character, Liberalism, And The Protean Culture Of Evidence Law, Daniel D. Blinka Nov 2013

Character, Liberalism, And The Protean Culture Of Evidence Law, Daniel D. Blinka

Seattle University Law Review

It is time to rethink character evidence. Long notorious as the most frequently litigated evidence issue, character doctrine plagues courts, trial lawyers, and law students with its infamously “grotesque” array of nonsensical rules, whimsical distinctions, and arcane procedures. Character is a calculation of social worth and value; it is the sum total of what others think of us, whether expressed as their own opinion or the collective opinions of many (reputation). Once we grasp that character is a social construct, we are in a better position to address some of the problems that plague evidence law. To provide needed clarity …
