Academic Freedom And Professorial Speech In The Post-Garcetti World, Oren R. Griffin
Academic Freedom And Professorial Speech In The Post-Garcetti World, Oren R. Griffin
Seattle University Law Review
Academic freedom, a coveted feature of higher education, is the concept that faculty should be free to perform their essential functions as professors and scholars without the threat of retaliation or undue administrative influence. The central mission of an academic institution, teach-ing and research, is well served by academic freedom that allows the faculty to conduct its work in the absence of censorship or coercion. In support of this proposition, courts have long held that academic freedom is a special concern of the First Amendment, granting professors and faculty members cherished protections regarding academic speech. In Garcetti v. Ceballos, the …
Mania: The Lives, Literature, And Law Of The Beats, Ronald K.L. Collins, David M. Skover
Mania: The Lives, Literature, And Law Of The Beats, Ronald K.L. Collins, David M. Skover
Seattle University Law Review
The Beats introduced the counter-culture to twentieth century America. They were the first to break away from Eisenhower conformity, from the era of the Man in the Grey Flannel Suit. With them came an infusion of rebel spirit—a spirit that hearkened back to Walt Whitman—in their lives, literature, and law. Their literature spawned a remarkable chapter in American obscenity law. The prosecution of Allen Ginsberg’s epic poem, Howl, was the last of its kind in this nation; and the prosecution of William Burroughs’s Naked Lunch is one of the last times that a novel was charged as obscene. The First …

A Sub-Kpc-Scale Binary Active Galactic Nucleus With Double Narrow-Line Regions, Jong-Hak Woo, Hojin Cho, Bernd Husemann, S. Komossa, Daeseong Park, Vardha N. Bennert
Physics
We present the kinematic properties of a type-2 Quasi stellar object (QSO), SDSS J132323.33−015941.9 at z ∼ 0.35, based on the analysis of Very Large Telescope integral field spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, which suggest that the target is a binary active galactic nucleus (AGN) with double narrow-line regions. The QSO features double-peaked emission lines ([O iii] and Hβ) which can be decomposed into two kinematic components. The flux-weighted centroids of the blue and red components are separated by ∼0.2 arcsec (0.8 kpc in projection) and coincide with the location of the two stellar cores detected …
An Open Letter To Governor-Elect Mcauliffe, Thomas J. Shields
An Open Letter To Governor-Elect Mcauliffe, Thomas J. Shields
School of Professional and Continuing Studies Faculty Publications
Almost every governor elected in recent memory has recognized how critical education is to the economic and social welfare of our commonwealth. Each has come into office ready to put his personal stamp on Virginia's educational system. However, we believe the time has come for our state's chief executive to realize that our current system is no longer functioning in an equitable manner, particularly for children who are at or below the poverty line.
Zuzu's Petals, Jeffrey James Jarot
Zuzu's Petals, Jeffrey James Jarot
Theses and Dissertations
Zuzu's Petals relates the travails of Jules and Julie, a couple whose marriage is in the process of breaking apart. Jules has a "fanboyish" obsession with the 1946 Frank Capra film "It's a Wonderful Life." Furthermore, he is fixated on his own past, and his eccentric behavior has caused his disenchanted wife to seek romantic and emotional solace in David, an old flame from high school. Their child, Zuzu, who was named at Jules' insistence after a key character in the Capra film, has herself sensed that something is amiss in her parents' dealings with each other. The story's narrative …

The study was commissioned by Fundashon Bon Intenshon (FBI), through its sole Director and Founder, Mr. Gregory Elias, and was conducted through an intercept survey on site during the two major concerts on August 30 and 31, 2013. The study was carried out by the Dick Pope Sr. Institute for Tourism Studies (DPITS) of the Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. This is the fourth time in a row that the DPITS conducts the study on behalf of FBI. This report documents the economic contribution and the experience of the international visitors attending the Curacao …

"You've Got To Be Carefully Taught": Reflections On War, Imperialism And Patriotism In America's South Pacific, Jayna D. Butler
"You've Got To Be Carefully Taught": Reflections On War, Imperialism And Patriotism In America's South Pacific, Jayna D. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
Underneath the romance, comedy and exoticism, South Pacific is a story that questioned core American values, exploring issues of race and power at a time when these topics were intensely relevant-the original opened just four years post WWII, on the heels of Roosevelt's aggressive expansionist response to domestic instabilities. Much has been written about the depiction of war and racial prejudice in South Pacific. However, examining such topics in the context of their cultural and political moment (both in 1949 and 2008) and through the lens of Terry Eagleton's unique take on morality, is not only a fascinating study, but …

Digital Storytelling In The Library: Supporting The Multimodal Assignment From Start To Finish, Elizabeth Andrejasich Gibes, Robert L. Nunez Ii
Library Faculty Research and Publications
This poster explores the security, privacy and ethical considerations confronted in supporting digital media courses. Of particular importance to this presentation is the increased role digital storytelling and video composition plays in student learning. Supporting this shift in curriculum, librarians have the opportunity to facilitate an intelligent and integrated move toward the use of these digital tools in classrooms and participate in educating students on media literacy. Librarians supporting the Digital Media Studio at Marquette University share their techniques in educating students on intellectual property issues and in navigating security and privacy problems with shared equipment.

Building A Better Blend: Research-Based Blended Course Design, Jennifer Spohrer
Blended Learning Research and Open Educational Resources
Slides from a faculty workshop organized by the Central Pennsylvania Consortium, held at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. In this talk I discuss how to use findings from the NGLC grant-funded study of blended learning at 40 liberal arts colleges and related pedagogical and cognitive science research to develop effective blended courses. Some of the topics covered include the "testing effect," spacing learning learning over time, feedback, and metacognition.
Incorporating Usability Into The Database Review Process: New Lessons And Possibilities, Ilana R. Barnes
Incorporating Usability Into The Database Review Process: New Lessons And Possibilities, Ilana R. Barnes
Libraries Faculty and Staff Presentations
The objective of this study is to examine the impact of incorporating user experience study methods into library database purchase and renewal. In the summer of 2013, Purdue libraries introduced a modified standard usability concept (heuristic evaluation, or expert review) into an existing yearly electronic resource evaluation process. Every year librarians already evaluated electronic resources in the collection using a set of parameters including usage statistics but never explicitly included database usability. Introducing more user experience parameters into process allows librarians to record usability errors to be communicated back to database vendors or to be considered for database renewal and …

Reflecting On The Ordinary, Linda Conti
Reflecting On The Ordinary, Linda Conti
Theses and Dissertations
My work is about valuing the ordinary moments in life that can be described as joyful, difficult, beautiful, painful, or even transcendent. My creativity arises from a need to tell the story of these moments, and to share my experience with others. These moments are often evidenced by the objects we leave behind. They are a testament to the life we have lived, or are now living. My attention to small, ordinary details includes honoring and remembering people who have died. They may be artists, writers, friends, or family members but it is important to me to record the unique …
