Creating Entrepreneurial Sports Management Graduates, Amanda Jones, Paul Jones Nov 2013

Creating Entrepreneurial Sports Management Graduates, Amanda Jones, Paul Jones

Plymouth Business School

Objectives Given the high unemployment rates being experienced by graduates, the importance of small business start-up has increased significantly, with greater priority being placed upon the development of entrepreneurial skills across the educational sector. However, there is a limited literature considering the student experience and issues involved with supporting non-Business discipline students attaining entrepreneurial competencies. This study explores the attitudes and experience of Sports Development and Sports Management students towards entrepreneurship education highlighting, best practice from a pedagogical perspective. Prior Work There is limited literature discussing the impact and issues involved with the effective delivery of entrepreneurship education in non-Business …

A Unification Of Mediation And Interaction, Tyler J. Vanderweele Nov 2013

A Unification Of Mediation And Interaction, Tyler J. Vanderweele

Harvard University Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We show that the overall effect of an exposure on an outcome, in the presence of a mediator with which the exposure may interact, can be decomposed into four components: (i) the effect of the exposure in the absence of the mediator, (ii) the interactive effect when the mediator is left to what is would be in the absence of exposure, (iii) a mediated interaction and (iv) a pure mediated effect. These four components respectively correspond to the portion of the effect that is due to neither mediation nor interaction, to just interaction (but not mediation), to both mediation and …

Influences On Consumers' Recycling Intentions Of Compact Fluorescent Lamps—Mercury As A Factor, David M. K. Treumann, Jonna Holland Nov 2013

Influences On Consumers' Recycling Intentions Of Compact Fluorescent Lamps—Mercury As A Factor, David M. K. Treumann, Jonna Holland

Marketing & Entrepreneurship Faculty Publications

The purpose of the current study is to understand consumers’ behavioral intentions in situations involving both positive and negative potential impacts on the environment. The case of energy efficient Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFLs) with their potential for mercury pollution is an example of this type of trade-off. Past studies have confirmed the usefulness of the Theory of Reasoned Action for identifying the antecedents influencing recycling rates, however, none have looked at situations where conflicting environmental trade-offs were involved. Stepwise regression analysis was used to develop a core model which explains R2=.561 of the intention to recycle. Significant antecedents include the …

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste Nov 2013

Roles Of Jnrap2.6-Like From The Transition Zone Of Black Walnut In Hormone Signaling, Zhonglian Huang, Peng Zhao, Jose Medina, Richard Meilan, Keith E. Woeste

Department of Forestry & Natural Resources Faculty Publications

An EST sequence, designated JnRAP2-like, was isolated from tissue at the heartwood/sapwood transition zone (TZ) in black walnut (Juglans nigra L). The deduced amino acid sequence of JnRAP2-like protein consists of a single AP2-containing domain with significant similarity to conserved AP2/ERF DNA-binding domains in other species. Based on multiple sequence alignment, JnRAP2-like appears to be an ortholog of RAP2.6L (At5g13330), which encodes an ethylene response element binding protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. Real-time PCR revealed that the JnRAP2-like was expressed most abundantly in TZ of trees harvested in fall when compared with other xylem tissues harvested in the …

High Throughput Data Framework Based Characterization And Evaluations Of Thermobifida Fusca For Industrial Applications, Niti Vanee Nov 2013

High Throughput Data Framework Based Characterization And Evaluations Of Thermobifida Fusca For Industrial Applications, Niti Vanee

Theses and Dissertations

Cellulolytic organisms are being heavily studied for the production of biofuels, given that lignocellulosic biomass would be a cheap, abundant, and renewable starting material for chemical production. A challenge with cellulolytic microorganisms is that they are typically poorly characterized and often difficult to genetically manipulate. Our group focuses characterization and engineering of a thermophilic aerobic, cellulolytic actinobacterium, Thermobifida fusca. The wider range of optimal temperature and pH for the growth condition, besides the secretion of several group of cellulases, have made this microbe a potentially efficient host system for industrially application. After the development of first ever successful genetic manipulation …

The Effect Of Media Selection On The Membrane Characteristics And Fatty Acid Composition Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Seth Russell Johnson Nov 2013

The Effect Of Media Selection On The Membrane Characteristics And Fatty Acid Composition Of Staphylococcus Aureus, Seth Russell Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The cellular membrane is a vital structure to a microorganism and impacts important aspects of environmental regulation and growth. The physical structure of cellular membranes plays a key role in bacterial growth at low temperatures, membrane permeability and susceptibility to membrane active molecules as well as broader aspects of bacterial physiology and pathogenesis. Mueller Hinton medium is the required medium for antimicrobial susceptibility testing in the US, but there are many other types of media used in staphylococcal research. Different media vary in their nutrient compositions, and the effect of media composition on bacterial physiology is incompletely understood. The aim …

A Unique Support For Sexual-Minority Identity Development: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of A Long-Term Formal Mentoring Relationship Between An Adult And A Youth From The Gay Community, Christian L. Rummell Nov 2013

A Unique Support For Sexual-Minority Identity Development: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis Of A Long-Term Formal Mentoring Relationship Between An Adult And A Youth From The Gay Community, Christian L. Rummell

Dissertations and Theses

An important need exists to build a baseline understanding of the phenomenon of formal mentoring relationships involving adults and youth from the gay community. During the formative years when gay adolescents navigate through the process of understanding, defining, accepting, and sharing their identity as a sexual minority, they are often faced with high levels of environmental risks, including victimization, stress, and negative social sanctions by others. Formal mentoring has been recommended as a potential strategy to offer unique one-to-one support to gay youth that can help to foster resilience and a range of positive outcomes, including strengthening processes involved in …
