Quasilinear Equations With Source Terms On Carnot Groups, Nguyen Cong Phuc, Igor E. Verbitsky Oct 2013

Quasilinear Equations With Source Terms On Carnot Groups, Nguyen Cong Phuc, Igor E. Verbitsky

Faculty Publications

In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of solutions to quasilinear equations of Lane-Emden type with measure data on a Carnot group G of arbitrary step. The quasilinear part involves operators of the p-Laplacian type ΔG, p, 1 < p < ∞. These results are based on new a priori estimates of solutions in terms of nonlinear potentials of Th. Wolff's type. As a consequence, we characterize completely removable singularities, and we prove a Liouville type theorem for supersolutions of quasilinear equations with source terms which has been known only for equations involving the sub-Laplacian (p = 2) on the Heisenberg group. © 2013 American Mathematical Society.

A Tensile Deformation Model For In-Situ Dendrite/Metallic Glass Matrix Composites, J. W. Qiao, T. Zhang, Fuqian Yang, P. K. Liaw, S. Pauly, B. S. Xu

Chemical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

In-situ dendrite/metallic glass matrix composites (MGMCs) with a composition of Ti₄₆Zr₂₀V₁₂Cu₅Be₁₇ exhibit ultimate tensile strength of 1510 MPa and fracture strain of about 7.6%. A tensile deformation model is established, based on the five-stage classification: (1) elastic-elastic, (2) elastic-plastic, (3) plastic-plastic (yield platform), (4) plastic-plastic (work hardening), and (5) plastic-plastic (softening) stages, analogous to the tensile behavior of common carbon steels. The constitutive relations strongly elucidate the tensile deformation mechanism. In parallel, the simulation results by a finite-element method (FEM) are in good agreement with the experimental findings and theoretical calculations. The present study gives a mathematical model to clarify …

Formal Verification And Planning: An Evaluation, Rajesh Kalyanam, Tanji Hu, Robert Givan Oct 2013

Formal Verification And Planning: An Evaluation, Rajesh Kalyanam, Tanji Hu, Robert Givan

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We explore the implications of improvements in hardware and knowledge representation for the application of automated reasoning systems to planning. We apply a novel automated-reasoning system with no planningspecific features to questions about the PDDL planning domains Blocksworld and (no airports) Logistics. Our system, with no human interaction and considering no specific problem instances, is able to verify all the key state invariants for both domains. We propose organizing domain reasoning around (currently hand-written) recursive state-predicate– achievement macro-actions, such as a macro to achieve clear(b) in the Blocksworld. Leveraging (somewhat) limited human interaction, our system can completely characterize the effects …

Stability Analysis Of 4-Species Aβ Aggregation Model: A Novel Approach To Obtaining Physically Meaningful Rate Constants, G. Ghag, P. Ghosh, A. Mauro, V. Rangachari, Ashuwin Vaidya

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Protein misfolding and concomitant aggregation towards amyloid formation is the underlying biochemical commonality among a wide range of human pathologies. Amyloid formation involves the conversion of proteins from their native monomeric states (intrinsically disordered or globular) to well-organized, fibrillar aggregates in a nucleation-dependent manner. Understanding the mechanism of aggregation is important not only to gain better insight into amyloid pathology but also to simulate and predict molecular pathways. One of the main impediments in doing so is the stochastic nature of interactions that impedes thorough experimental characterization and the development of meaningful insights. In this study, we have utilized a …

Diet And Health Capital: An American Case Study, Matthew J. Klein Oct 2013

Diet And Health Capital: An American Case Study, Matthew J. Klein

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper begins to model diet's contribution to national stocks of Health Capital as defined in Kenneth Arrow et al.'s (2012) "Sustainability and the Measurement of Wealth" by developing a set of equations that link the diet of a nation’s average citizen to that nation’s per capita welfare over time. The model is applied to the American diet from 2005 to 2009. This research finds that even a small change in diet can have a large impact in whether or not a nation is sustainable over time.

Genetic Algorithm Based Model In Text Steganography, Christine K. Mulunda, Peter W. Wagacha, Alfayo O. Adede

The African Journal of Information Systems

Steganography is an ancient art. It is used for security in open systems. It focuses on hiding secret messages inside a cover medium. The most important property of a cover medium is the amount of data that can be stored inside it without changing its noticeable properties. There are many sophisticated techniques with which to hide, analyze, and recover that hidden information. This paper discusses an exploration in the use of Genetic Algorithm operators on the cover medium. We worked with text as the cover medium with the aim of increasing robustness and capacity of hidden data. Elitism is used …

Improving The Sweeping Efficiency Of Permanganate Into Low Permeable Zones To Treat Tce: Experimental Results And Model Development, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Negin Kananizadeh, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Steve D. Comfort, Yusong Li Oct 2013

Improving The Sweeping Efficiency Of Permanganate Into Low Permeable Zones To Treat Tce: Experimental Results And Model Development, Chanat Chokejaroenrat, Negin Kananizadeh, Chainarong Sakulthaew, Steve D. Comfort, Yusong Li

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

The residual buildup and treatment of dissolved contaminants in low permeable zones (LPZs) is a particularly challenging issue for injection-based remedial treatments. Our objective was to improve the sweeping efficiency of permanganate into LPZs to treat dissolved-phase TCE. This was accomplished by conducting transport experiments that quantified the ability of xanthan-MnO4− solutions to penetrate and cover (i.e., sweep) an LPZ that was surrounded by transmissive sands. By incorporating the non-Newtonian fluid xanthan with MnO4−, penetration of MnO4− into the LPZ improved dramatically and sweeping efficiency reached 100% in fewer pore volumes. To quantify …
