Performance Guarantees For C-Wmd Robot Missions, Shu Jiang, Ronald C. Arkin, Damian M. Lyons, Tsung-Ming Liu, Dagon Harrington

Faculty Publications

Robotics has been considered as one of the five key technology areas for defense against attacks with weapons of mass destruction (WMD). However, due to the mass impact nature of WMD, failures of counter-WMD (C-WMD) missions can have catastrophic consequences. To ensure robot's success in carrying out C-WMD missions, we have developed a novel verification framework in providing performance guarantees for behavior-based and probabilistic robot algorithms in complex real-world environments. This paper describes the system architecture and discusses how the verification framework can be used to provide pre-mission performance guarantees for robots in executing C-WMD missions.

Location, Location, Location: The Importance Of Proximity In Student Peer Evaluation, Roger White Oct 2013

Location, Location, Location: The Importance Of Proximity In Student Peer Evaluation, Roger White

Economics

The appropriateness of physical distances as a proxy for interpersonal networks is examined using data on peer evaluation scores collected from undergraduate student presentations in econometrics courses during the spring 2010 and spring 2011 semesters at Franklin & Marshall College. Employing the Tobit regression technique and decomposing the resulting coefficient estimates into marginal effects, we find that greater physical distance is negatively related to peer evaluation scores in the sense that greater distance lowers scores and reduces the likelihood that the evaluating student will assign the maximum possible score. Similarly, evaluating students assign higher scores to those student presenters they …

Analytical Methods For Planning And Scheduling Daily Work In Inpatient Care Settings: Opportunities For Research And Practice, Laila Cure Ph.D.

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

This article identifies current challenges in the planning and execution of daily work in inpatient care settings. Inadequate planning of the processes and resources associated with inpatient care services may negatively affect their effectiveness. It may also lead to burnout of healthcare workers when the resulting work plan is unknowingly infeasible or does not incorporate the necessary human factors considerations. This paper provides with an overview of current research on inpatient care workflow planning, as well as with directions for researchers and practitioners to advance this problem using a combination of human factors engineering and analytical methods.

Hilary Putnam's Consistency Objection Against Wittgenstein's Conventionalism In Mathematics, Pieranna Garavaso Oct 2013

Hilary Putnam's Consistency Objection Against Wittgenstein's Conventionalism In Mathematics, Pieranna Garavaso

Philosophy Publications

Hilary Putnam first published the consistency objection against Ludwig Wittgenstein’s account of mathematics in 1979. In 1983, Putnam and Benacerraf raised this objection against all conventionalist accounts of mathematics. I discuss the 1979 version and the scenario argument, which supports the key premise of the objection. The wide applicability of this objection is not apparent; I thus raise it against an imaginary axiomatic theory T similar to Peano arithmetic in all relevant aspects. I argue that a conventionalist can explain the consistency of T and suggest that an analogous explanation can be provided for the consistency of Peano arithmetic.

Innovation Complementarity And Environmental Productivity Effects: Reality Or Delusion? Evidence From The Eu, Marianna Gilli, Susanna Mancinelli, Massimiliano Mazzanti Oct 2013

Innovation Complementarity And Environmental Productivity Effects: Reality Or Delusion? Evidence From The Eu, Marianna Gilli, Susanna Mancinelli, Massimiliano Mazzanti

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Innovation is a key element behind the achievement of desired environmental and economic performances. Regarding CO2, mitigation strategies would require cuts in emissions of around 80-90% with respect to 1990. We investigate whether complementarity, namely integration, between the adoption of environmental innovation measures and other technological and organizational innovations is a factor that has supported reduction in CO2 emissions per value added, that is environmental productivity. We merge new EU CIS and WIOD meso level data to assess the innovation effects on sector CO2 performances at a wide EU level. We find that jointly adopting different innovations is not a …

Improving Reuse In Software Development For The Life Sciences, Nicholas Vincent Iannotti Oct 2013

Improving Reuse In Software Development For The Life Sciences, Nicholas Vincent Iannotti

Open Access Dissertations

The last several years have seen unprecedented advancements in the application of technology to the life sciences, particularly in the area of data generation. Novel scientific insights are now often driven primarily by software development supporting new multidisciplinary and increasingly multifaceted data analysis. However, despite the availability of tools such as best practice frameworks, the current rate of software development is not able to keep up with the needs of scientists. This bottleneck in software development is largely due to code reuse generally not being applied in practice.

This dissertation presents Legwork, a class library of reuse-optimized design pattern implementations …

This article will trace the antecedents to Kentucky’s adoption of the standards as one expression of the late 20th century/early 21st century “corporate school reform movement” as manifested in the …

Strategies Of Cooperation And Punishment Among Students And Clerical Workers, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari Oct 2013

Strategies Of Cooperation And Punishment Among Students And Clerical Workers, Maria Bigoni, Gabriele Camera, Marco Casari

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

We study the individual behavior of students and workers in an experiment where they repeatedly face the same cooperative task. The data show that clerical workers differ from college students in overall cooperation rates, strategy adoption and use of punishment opportunities. Students cooperate more than workers. Cooperation increases in both subject pools when a personal punishment option is available. Students are less likely than workers to adopt strategies of unconditional defection, and more likely to select strategies of conditional cooperation. Finally, students are more likely than workers to sanction uncooperative behavior by adopting decentralized punishment, and also personal punishment when …

External Influence As An Indicator Of Scholarly Importance, Ho Fai Chan, Bruno S. Frey, Jana Gallus, Markus Schaffner, Benno Torgler, Stephen Whyte

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The external influence of scholarly activity has to date been measured primarily in terms of publications and citations, metrics that also dominate the promotion and grant processes. Yet the array of scholarly activities visible to the outside world are far more extensive and recently developed technologies allow broader and more accurate measurement of their influence on the wider societal discourse. Accordingly we analyze the relation between the internal and external influences of 723 top economics scholars using the number of pages indexed by Google and Bing as a measure of their external influence. Although the correlation between internal and external …

Initiating Historical Thinking In Elementary Schools, John H. Bickford Oct 2013

Initiating Historical Thinking In Elementary Schools, John H. Bickford

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

With an ever-expanding focus on reading and mathematics, many elementary schools have chosen to reduce time previously reserved for social studies. Elementary teachers who understand both the relevance of social studies content and the effectiveness of interdisciplinary teaching regularly incorporate applicable history-based children’s tradebooks in their curricula. Locating developmentally appropriate books is simple. Teaching history using children’s literature can be effective. It can be counterproductive, however, if the selected book is replete with historical misrepresentations. Teaching historical thinking in elementary school is problematic no matter what the teaching tool, and there are few methodological roadmaps for elementary teachers. Here, I …

Global Dynamics Of Certain Homogeneous Second-Order Quadratic Fractional Difference Equation, M. Garić-Demirović, Mustafa Rs Kulenović, N. Nurkanović

Mathematics Faculty Publications

We investigate the basins of attraction of equilibrium points and minimal period-two solutions of the difference equation of the form xn+1 = x2n-1/(ax2n + bxnxn-1 + cx2n-1), n = 0, 1, 2, …, where the parameters a, b, and c are positive numbers and the initial conditions x−1 and x0 are arbitrary nonnegative numbers. The unique feature of this equation is the coexistence of an equilibrium solution and the minimal period-two solution both of which are locally asymptotically stable.
