Data Hiding In Digital Images Using A Partial Optimization Technique Based On The Classical Lsb Method, Feyzi̇ Akar, Yildiray Yalman, Hüseyi̇n Selçuk Varol

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This paper presents a new partial optimization approach for the least significant bit (LSB) data hiding technique that can be used for protecting any secret information or data. A deterioration effect of as little as possible in an image is intended using the LSB data hiding technique and this is well realized utilizing the proposed partial optimization approach achieving the same data embedding bit rates. In the proposed approach, all of the image pixels are classified into 8 regions and then the 8 distinct ordering codings are applied to each region by the developed partial optimization encoder. Thus, the most …

Power Efficient Linear Transmitters Using Sigma-Delta Modulation With Switching Amplifiers, Tayfun Nesimoglu Jan 2013

Power Efficient Linear Transmitters Using Sigma-Delta Modulation With Switching Amplifiers, Tayfun Nesimoglu

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

In conventional envelope elimination and restoration transmitters, the envelope information of the carrier is reconstructed by modulating the supply voltage of the switching amplifier. In this paper, it is shown that the supply voltage modulation introduces nonlinearity and reduces the average power efficiency of the transmitter. Here, novel transmitter architectures using sigma-delta--modulated carrier signals are proposed to overcome these shortcomings. The proposed architecture's and conventional envelope elimination and restoration transmitter's linearity and efficiency performances are compared at various oversampling rates and signal bandwidths. It is demonstrated that the proposed architectures may provide better linearity and efficiency than conventional envelope elimination …

Prediction Of Emissions And Exhaust Temperature For Direct Injection Diesel Engine With Emulsified Fuel Using Ann, Görkem Kökkülünk, Erhan Akdoğan, Vezi̇r Ayhan

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Exhaust gases have many effects on human beings and the environment. Therefore, they must be kept under control. The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), which is concerned with the prevention of marine pollution, limits the emissions according to the regulations. In Emission Control Area (ECA) regions, which are determined by MARPOL as ECAs, the emission rates should be controlled. Direct injection (DI) diesel engines are commonly used as a propulsion system on ships. The prediction and control of diesel engine emission rates is not an easy task in real time. Therefore, in this study, an …

A Low-Voltage And Low-Power Sinh-Domain Universal Biquadratic Filter For Low-Frequency Applications, Farooq Khanday, Nisar Shah Jan 2013

A Low-Voltage And Low-Power Sinh-Domain Universal Biquadratic Filter For Low-Frequency Applications, Farooq Khanday, Nisar Shah

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Sinh-domain CMOS filters have favorable properties, such as a wide dynamic range at low supply voltage, compactness, linearity, and low power consumption. These properties are becoming increasingly important for biomedical applications that require extremely low-power dissipation and neuromorphic circuits that attempt to reproduce the biophysics of biological neurons and synapses. In this paper, a low-voltage sinh-domain universal biquadratic filter circuit is introduced. The circuit, aside from permitting the independent adjustment of pole frequency (\omega_0) and the quality factor (Q), is free from matching conditions, capable of absorbing the shunt parasitic capacitances, amenable for monolithic integration, and composed of merely a …

Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory Of Rotationally And Vibrationally Inelastic Scattering In Space-Fixed And Body-Fixed Reference Frames, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov Jan 2013

Mixed Quantum/Classical Theory Of Rotationally And Vibrationally Inelastic Scattering In Space-Fixed And Body-Fixed Reference Frames, Alexander Semenov, Dmitri Babikov

Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications

We formulated the mixed quantum/classical theory for rotationally and vibrationally inelastic scattering process in the diatomic molecule + atom system. Two versions of theory are presented, first in the space-fixed and second in the body-fixed reference frame. First version is easy to derive and the resultant equations of motion are transparent, but the state-to-state transition matrix is complex-valued and dense. Such calculations may be computationally demanding for heavier molecules and/or higher temperatures, when the number of accessible channels becomes large. In contrast, the second version of theory requires some tedious derivations and the final equations of motion are rather complicated …

Stopping Spam With Sending Session Verification, Ahmet Baran Jan 2013

Stopping Spam With Sending Session Verification, Ahmet Baran

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Spam has become one of the most significant problems for Internet communication and users today. The traditional filtering methods and signature-based spam blocking systems that have come into prominence recently fall short, as statistics demonstrate that spam further mounts up day after day. In this study, a new method is recommended to block spam mails. In this recommended method, a mail sending session is verified during mail envelope communication by adding small attachments to the simple mail transfer protocol, so spam mails can be blocked before leaving the sender domain or relay machine. Additionally, hijacked user accounts are able to …

Xor-Based Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm For Binary Optimization, Mustafa Servet Kiran, Mesut Gündüz Jan 2013

Xor-Based Artificial Bee Colony Algorithm For Binary Optimization, Mustafa Servet Kiran, Mesut Gündüz

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, which was inspired by the foraging and dance behaviors of real honey bee colonies, was first introduced for solving numerical optimization problems. When the solution space of the optimization problem is binary-structured, the basic ABC algorithm should be modified for solving this class of problems. In this study, we propose XOR-based modification for the solution-updating equation of the ABC algorithm in order to solve binary optimization problems. The proposed method, named binary ABC (binABC), is examined on an uncapacitated facility location problem, which is a pure binary optimization problem, and the results obtained by …

Hybrid Spr Algorithm To Select Predictive Genes For Effectual Cancer Classification, Aruna Sundaram, Nandakishore Lellapalli Venkata, Rajagopalan Sarukai Parthasarathy

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Designing an automated system for classifying DNA microarray data is an extremely challenging problem because of its high dimension and low amount of sample data. In this paper, a hybrid statistical pattern recognition algorithm is proposed to reduce the dimensionality and select the predictive genes for the classification of cancer. Colon cancer gene expression profiles having 62 samples of 2000 genes were used for the experiment. A gene subset of 6 highly informative genes was selected by the algorithm, which provided a classification accuracy of 93.5%.

Flow Velocity Measurement And Analysis Based On Froth Image Sift Features And Kalman Filter For Froth Flotation, Jinping Liu, Weihua Gui, Zhaohui Tang Jan 2013

Flow Velocity Measurement And Analysis Based On Froth Image Sift Features And Kalman Filter For Froth Flotation, Jinping Liu, Weihua Gui, Zhaohui Tang

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

The flow velocity of flotation froth involves important information about the concentrate grade and the mineral recovery. It is significant to maintain the flow velocity of the froth at proper levels to achieve a good production performance in the machine vision-based process monitoring and control. However, the accurate velocity field measurement for the heavily deformed and seriously fragile froth bubbles is still a great challenge. Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) feature-based image matching provides an effective registration method for deformed objects, but most of the processing time would be wasted on the feature extraction and matching in irrelevant regions of the …

The Development Of The First Legend For Geomorphologic Mapping Of High Mountain Environments In The United Sates, Mitchell Lee Fyock

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Geomorphological mapping is the attempt to depict the physical setting of the surface of the earth by mapping the landforms present and the processes responsible for their appearance, and is method that is practiced worldwide. Currently, there is no universally accepted legend for mapping the geomorphological features of all environments, though there have been several attempts made to develop such a legend. Instead, many different European nations have developed their own geomorphologic mapping legends for mapping the landscapes that exist within their national boundaries. In addition, certain countries have even developed highly specific geomorphologic mapping legends for specific geomorphologic environments. …

The Equivalence Of Economies And Returns To Scale Revisited: Nonlinear Expansion Paths And The Definition Of Scale Jan 2013

The Equivalence Of Economies And Returns To Scale Revisited: Nonlinear Expansion Paths And The Definition Of Scale

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

That increasing returns to scale is a sufficient condition for generating economies of scale is well understood. Many instructors and most textbooks, however, report that increasing returns is a necessary condition for scale economies. While the necessity of decreasing returns in generating diseconomies of scale can be proven locally for smooth technologies or generally for homothetic or non-variable returns technologies, no such requirement exists when considering discrete scale adjustments along more realistic expansion paths. We argue that the practice of equating economies and returns to scale is an inappropriate generalization that resulted from a historical preference for homothetic production functions.

Modern Multivariate Methods For Accurate Dialect Classification, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma Jan 2013

Modern Multivariate Methods For Accurate Dialect Classification, Ernest Fokoue, Zichen Ma

Articles

We perform discriminant analysis together with principal component analysis on dialect and accent recognition. Since the data matrix exhibits high dimension low sample size feature, we calculate the principal components and the score matrix based on the dual space. Given the transformed score matrix, linear discriminant model does not fit the data well, while quadratic discriminant model, the superior model comparing to LDA, may fail sometimes when large number of principal components are required. Using the Gaussian radial basis function kernel, we calculate the kernel matrix and perform LDA directly on it. Comparing the LDA-PCA method, the in-sample prediction error …

4-Isoxazolyl-1,4-Dihydropyrirines Bind The Multidrug-Resistance Transporter, Scott Steiger Jan 2013

4-Isoxazolyl-1,4-Dihydropyrirines Bind The Multidrug-Resistance Transporter, Scott Steiger

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The development of multidrug resistance in tumor cells has been recognized as a major obstacle to successful cancer treatment. Tumor cells in vitro and in vivo can develop multidrug resistance (MDR) to the lethal effects of a variety of cytotoxic drugs used to treat cancerous tumor cells. The over expression of multiple drug resistance gene 1 has been correlated with the expression of multi drug resistance protein 1(MDR1, also known as P-glycoprotein or P-gp). MDR1's role in altering uptake, distribution and bioavailability is considered a significant factor when examining drugs for clinical administration, and represents a viable drug target for …

Countries and consortiums of countries need information about their forests to set global and national targets to deal with issues of climate change and deforestation as well as to set national targets and understand the state of their forest …

Developmental Stress In Birds: Phenotypic And Fitness, Ondi L. Crino Jan 2013

Developmental Stress In Birds: Phenotypic And Fitness, Ondi L. Crino

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The environment animals experience during development can have important effects on phenotype, performance, and fitness across multiple life-history stages. Environmental cues experienced during development can provide information to animals about the environment they will soon inhabit and promote phenotypic changes which affect fitness. Increasing evidence suggests that physiological stress may be one such cue that conveys environmental information to developing animals. Here, I explore the short- and long-term consequences of developmental stress in captive and free-living birds. In chapter one, I explore the effects of developmental stress on body size and physiological stress responses across life-history stages in zebra finches …

Water Conservation In San Antonio, Tx: The Economics Of Water Pricing And The Effectiveness Of The Watersaver Landscape Rebate, Mark Wilkinson, Mitch Hagney, Yemi Idowu, Megan Miller

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Student Works

We address the effort to decrease residential water use in San Antonio, Texas, because recent droughts have made water conservation a high priority there. Since the city’s water utility—the San Antonio Water System (SAWS)—maintains water prices below economically efficient levels, demand is outstripping supply. To address this problem, we apply microeconomic analysis to the utility’s residential water pricing structure and the drought restrictions it imposes. We make recommendations for incentivizing water conservation in high-volume consumers by increasing the progressivity of SAWS pricing policies. SAWS also offers water conservation rebates, such as the WaterSaver Landscape Rebate, whose effectiveness we analyze herein. …

A Novel Mammogram Registration Algorithm For Improving Breast Cancer Detection, Stephanie Cleveland Cunningham Jan 2013

A Novel Mammogram Registration Algorithm For Improving Breast Cancer Detection, Stephanie Cleveland Cunningham

Theses

Accurate mammogram registration is vital to future breast cancer research. In order to detect changes over time and/or bilateral asymmetry, computer aided detection algorithms must first be able to accurately align two mammogram images. The registration algorithm in this thesis is a novel process designed to accurately register two mammogram images using the Pompeiu-Hausdorff distance as a similarity measure. The algorithm identifies the optimal translation and rotation that can be used to properly align the two mammogram images by computing the optimized Pompeiu-Hausdorff distance between extracted feature point-sets and adaptively fine tuning the parameters with each iteration. This automated algorithm, …

Development & Application Of A Space Launch System Value Model To A Lunar Helium-3 Mining Mission Case Study, Shari Keller Jan 2013

Development & Application Of A Space Launch System Value Model To A Lunar Helium-3 Mining Mission Case Study, Shari Keller

Theses

Spacecraft and launch systems are complex products requiring a careful balance between competing concerns, such as performance, weight, and reliability, to serve their mission. This thesis proposes that an economic analysis of all parties to spacecraft launch and operation can be used to construct a top-level value model on the launch system attribute space. A Lunar Helium-3 (He3) mining business venture provides the mission case study. Input variables were grouped into broad categories of developing a space launch system: costs, performance, schedule, and reliability. Baseline data were aggregated by impact on the mission's costs and benefit elements of the business …

Finite Element Analysis Technique For Unidirectional Fiber-Reinforced Composites With Localized Wrinkles, Cory Kendall Jan 2013

Finite Element Analysis Technique For Unidirectional Fiber-Reinforced Composites With Localized Wrinkles, Cory Kendall

Theses

Unidirectional fiber reinforced composites are commonly used in aerospace structural applications, such as engine nacelles and helicopter blades, as well as in wind turbine blades. These large, complex structures commonly contain fiber wrinkles caused by gathering and kinking of fibers in the curing process. The presence of fiber wrinkle defects can significantly compromise strength, stiffness, and delamination resistance, and thus reduce the anticipated structural performance. While some techniques have been established to find the effective stiffness of a section of material containing certain types of fiber wrinkles, there is no general approach to model the effects of an arbitrary fiber …

LSU Master's Theses

Compositionally-diverse Archean metamorphic rocks occur as xenoliths within the well-dated 2.8 Ga granitic gneisses that volumetrically-dominate the eastern Beartooth Mountains of the northern Wyoming Province. Common mafic lithologies in the Quad Creek-High Line Trails-Christmas Lake-Wyoming Creek-Line Creek Plateau area include granitic gneiss, amphibolites, mafic granulites and biotite and garnet-bearing peraluminous gneisses. The region also has sillimanite-biotite ± cordierite ± garnet gneisses and migmatites, as well as a single occurrence of a noteworthy orthopyroxene-cordierite gneiss with late-stage anthophyllite. A combination of detailed petrographic analysis and thermobarometric modeling were used to constrain the metamorphic conditions of the xenoliths prior to inclusion in …

Some Results On Graph Representations And Closure Systems, Adam J. Gilbert Jan 2013

Some Results On Graph Representations And Closure Systems, Adam J. Gilbert

Open Access Dissertations

Representations of graphs are a way of encoding the structure of a graph by using other discrete structures. The object of a representation of a graph is to encode its structure efficiently. Typically a graph can be encoded by an n x n adjacency matrix. It is possible, however, to encode graphs much more efficiently using other representation schemes.

This work considers tree representations of graphs. A tree representation of a target graph G is an assignment of subtrees of a host tree to the vertices of G in such a way that if uv ∈ E(G), then the …
