Evaluating The Utility Of Beaver Reintroduction Programs For Enhancing Habitat For Rainbow Trout And Steelhead, Jonathan Rodger Hegna Jan 2013

Evaluating The Utility Of Beaver Reintroduction Programs For Enhancing Habitat For Rainbow Trout And Steelhead, Jonathan Rodger Hegna

All Master's Theses

Beaver reintroduction programs are increasingly being viewed as a way to enhance salmonid habitat and production. However, the actual effectiveness of using beavers as a habitat enhancement tool for ESA listed steelhead Oncorhynchus mykiss populations is unknown. We examined the type of habitat, at both the microhabitat and mesohabitat levels, preferred by steelhead in three small streams in the upper Yakima Basin, WA through standard snorkel surveys and habitat measurements. Our results suggest that steelhead in small streams strongly prefer (relative to availability) microhabitats that have deeper water(> 30 cm), slow stream velocities(< 0 .05 mis), and complex cover types. Habitat partitioning among the size-classes (small< 50 mm, medium 50-90 mm, large> 90 mm total length, TL) principally operated …

Understanding The Psychology Of Seeking Support To Increase Health Science Student Engagement In Academic Support Services. A Practice Report, Gerard F. Hoyne, Keith Mcnaught Jan 2013

Understanding The Psychology Of Seeking Support To Increase Health Science Student Engagement In Academic Support Services. A Practice Report, Gerard F. Hoyne, Keith Mcnaught

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Increasing student engagement within higher education academic support services is a constant challenge. Whilst engagement with support is positively associated with successful retention, and non-engagement connected to attrition, the most vulnerable students are often the least likely to engage. Our data has shown that Health Science students are reluctant to engage with academic support services despite being made aware of their academic deficiencies. The "psychology of seeking support" was used as a lens to identify some of the multifaceted issues around student engagement. The School of Health Sciences made attendance at support courses compulsory for those students who were below …

More Homestead Protection And Predictability For Massachusetts Homeowners?: Examining The Expanded Coverage Under An Act Relative To The Estate Of Homestead, Justin H. Dion, Kathleen E. Dion, Jessica Morris Jan 2013

More Homestead Protection And Predictability For Massachusetts Homeowners?: Examining The Expanded Coverage Under An Act Relative To The Estate Of Homestead, Justin H. Dion, Kathleen E. Dion, Jessica Morris

Western New England Law Review

A Declaration of Homestead is a powerful law that protects a homeowner’s equity in real estate and provides a financial shield to ward off potential creditor claims. Although initially drafted with good intentions, the Massachusetts homestead law was revised and modified over several decades, producing confusing and inconsistent interpretations. To complicate matters, due to the fact creditor-debtor disputes often end up in United States Bankruptcy Court, federal bankruptcy judges were often forced to make sense of the patchwork that comprised the Massachusetts state homestead law, and often produced outcomes that seemed inconsistent with the objective of protecting home equity. After …

Stakeholder Theory, Value, And Firm Performance, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Andrew C. Wicks Jan 2013

Stakeholder Theory, Value, And Firm Performance, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Andrew C. Wicks

Management Faculty Publications

This paper argues that the notion of value has been overly simplified and narrowed to focus on economic returns. Stakeholder theory provides an appropriate lens for considering a more complex perspective of the value that stakeholders seek as well as new ways to measure it. We develop a four-factor perspective for defining value that includes, but extends beyond, the economic value stakeholders seek. To highlight its distinctiveness, we compare this perspective to three other popular performance perspectives. Recommendations are made regarding performance measurement for both academic researchers and practitioners. The stakeholder perspective on value offered in this paper draws attention …

Building Trip Generation Models From National Database For Medium Sized Communities, Mary Catherine Dondapati Jan 2013

Building Trip Generation Models From National Database For Medium Sized Communities, Mary Catherine Dondapati

Dissertations

Freight data is propreitery and it involves high cost to acquire relevant freight data. Due to this reason freight was often excluded in travel demand modeling or included implicitly. The changing preference in the mode of transportation of freight to trucks, puts more truck traffic on the roadways. The implicit inclusion of freight in travel demant models does not do justice to the freight trips accounted for truck. The knowledge of freight data has led to exclusive freight demand modeling. The national freight database like TRANSEARCH is propreitery but is available at both aggregated and disaggregated level. On the other …

High Efficiency Thrust Vector Control Allocation, Jeb S. Orr Jan 2013

High Efficiency Thrust Vector Control Allocation, Jeb S. Orr

Dissertations

The design of control mixing algorithms for launch vehicles with multiple vectoring engines yields competing objectives for which no straightforward solution approach exists. The designer seeks to optimally allocate the effector degrees of freedom such that maneuvering capability is maximized subject to constraints on available control authority. In the present application, such algorithms are generally restricted to linear transformations so as to minimize adverse control-structure interaction and maintain compatibility with industry-standard methods for control gain design and stability analysis. Based on the application of the theory of ellipsoids, a complete, scalable, and extensible framework is developed to effect rapid analysis …

Validating And Generating Realistic Routes For Individual Human Characters In Virtual Urban Terrain, Gregg Thomas Hanold Jan 2013

Validating And Generating Realistic Routes For Individual Human Characters In Virtual Urban Terrain, Gregg Thomas Hanold

Dissertations

The automatic generation of movement routes for autonomous computer controlled entities in virtual environments is an essential and ubiquitous task in simulations of many types and applications. Practically all existing route planning algorithms, many of which are implementations of either the well-known A* algorithm or variants of it, generate routes that are optimized for some route attribute, such as length or movement time. In this research an algorithm is developed that generates routes that are not optimized but are instead realistic, where realism is defined as similarity to routes generated by humans. Before designing the realistic route planning algorithm, four …

Sub-Pixel Spatial Resolution Interferometry, James Theodore Mooney Jan 2013

Sub-Pixel Spatial Resolution Interferometry, James Theodore Mooney

Dissertations

There is a growing need for an increase in the spatial resolution of interferometric surface measurements of precision optics. This research presents a new method for meeting this need. The improvement is necessary because of evolving surface figure and micro-roughness requirements for higher quality optics and optical systems, demand for larger optics, and recent advancements in deterministic polishing. These three topics will be discussed and their relationship to increased spatial resolution will be described. A solution that increases the spatial resolution using interlaced stitching will be presented. In this process, multiple interferometric measurements are made as the optic under test …

Discerning The Physical Properties Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Via Time Resolved Analysis With Physical Spectral Models, J. Michael Burgess Jan 2013

Discerning The Physical Properties Of Gamma-Ray Bursts Via Time Resolved Analysis With Physical Spectral Models, J. Michael Burgess

Dissertations

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic events in the Universe but the processes that generate their observed gamma-ray emission remain unknown. Much of what is known about these processes comes from fits of the empirical Band function to the photon spectra of GRBs. However, very little information about the emission mechanisms can be derived from these empirical fits because extrapolation of fitted Band parameters to physical photon models is often degenerate due to the similar shapes of these models. In this work, physical models of high-energy radiation mecha- nisms are numerically implemented into a data fitting framework in order …

West Chester University Climate Action Plan: Carbon Neutral By 2025, Tim Lutz, Executive Director Of Facilities Management, Climate Action Planning Team

WCU Campus Sustainability Initiatives

WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT GREG WEISENSTEIN signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in October 2010, pledging the University to a series of actions that will ultimately reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero. In doing so we joined more than 600 institutions in expressing our deep concern about global warming. More importantly, we accepted the challenge to provide leadership in our own community by “modeling ways to minimize global warming emissions, and by providing the knowledge and the educated graduates to achieve climate neutrality.” Since 2010 we have completed an inventory of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), …

Minhlp: Module To Identify New Hampshire License Plates, Sunitha Raghurajan Jan 2013

Minhlp: Module To Identify New Hampshire License Plates, Sunitha Raghurajan

Master's Theses and Capstones

A license plate, referred to simply as a plate or vehicle registration plate, is a small plastic or metal plate attached to a motor vehicle for official identification purposes. Most governments require a registration plate to be attached to both the front and rear of a vehicle, although certain jurisdictions or vehicle types, such as motorcycles, require only one plate, which is usually attached to the rear of the vehicle.

We present analysis of Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) of New Hampshire (NH) plates using open source products. This thesis contains an implementation of a demonstrated model and analysis of …

Theoretical Analysis Of The Reaction Of Peroxymethyl Radical With Atomic Hydrogen And Of Dibenzofuran With Atomic Chlorine, Mikhail Zhukovskiy Jan 2013

Theoretical Analysis Of The Reaction Of Peroxymethyl Radical With Atomic Hydrogen And Of Dibenzofuran With Atomic Chlorine, Mikhail Zhukovskiy

Master's Theses and Capstones

Experimental determination of rate constants for gas phase radical reactions is challenging. When rate constants necessary for modeling complex processes in atmospheric and combustion science are unknown, theoretical predictions are useful. We used Variational Transition State Theory with Multidimensional Tunneling (VTST/MT) with Density Functional Theory (DFT) to calculate the rate constant and isotope effects for reaction between the peroxymethyl radical and the hydrogen atom.

Polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) are a group of extremely toxic compounds formed during waste incineration. Currently, their chemical degradation in the atmosphere is poorly understood. While some experimental and theoretical results regarding the reaction of PCDFs with …

Some Remarks On Arslan’S 2011 Paper, Gholamhossein Hamedani, Hans Volkmer

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

It is shown that the main theorem of Arslan’s paper (Theorem 2, 2011), as stated, is incorrect. Under additional conditions, we present a short proof of the corrected version of the theorem. We also give a proof of a theorem of Rao and Shanbhag (1991), employed by Arslan, without the use of the Kolmogorov Consistency Theorem.

Probability Inequalities For The Sum Of Random Variables When Sampling Without Replacement, Jeremy Becnel, Kent Riggs, Dean Young Jan 2013

Probability Inequalities For The Sum Of Random Variables When Sampling Without Replacement, Jeremy Becnel, Kent Riggs, Dean Young

Faculty Publications

Exponential-type upper bounds are formulated for the probability that the maximum of the partial sample sums of discrete random variables having finite equispaced support exceeds or differs from the population mean by a specified positive constant. The new inequalities extend the work of Serfling (1974). An example of the results are given to demonstrate their efficacy.
