"Problems faced by society in today's global infrastructure are more complex than ever; these social, political and environmental issues require an interdisciplinary skill set to even begin to understand them let alone tackle them with a comprehensive strategy. Higher Education can better prepare people for real world problem solving by interacting in cross-disciplinary or interdisciplinary conversations with peers, faculty, colleagues etc. Professors from across the social sciences at Eastern Washington University that are engaged in an interdisciplinary conversation were interviewed for this qualitative case study. The dialogue generated from these interviews confirms that there are many intrinsic as well as …

Simultaneous Routing And Multiplexing In Ad Hoc Networks With Mimo Links, Maggie Cheng, Quanmin Ye, Xiaochun Cheng
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper addresses how to leverage the spatial multiplexing function of MIMO links to improve wireless network throughput. Wireless interference modeling of a half-duplex MIMO node is presented, based on which, routing, spatial multiplexing and scheduling are jointly considered in one optimization model. A linear program-based algorithm is proposed for the joint optimization, and numerical simulation results show that the joint optimization of routing with spatial-temporal multiplexing is superior to the separate design approaches, including separating routing from the other two designs, and separating scheduling from the other two designs. © 2013 IEEE.

Personalized Information System (PIS) aims to provide tailored services to users in various contexts. The aim of such system is to help users find relevant content easier and faster. To achieve such behavior, the system needs a user model providing information about users, e.g., about their interests, skills, background and custom information while ensuring their adaptation to the needs and preferences of each user. This system is able to learn about the preferences of individual users and to tailor the content, interface, and behavior to the user preferences. In fact, the diversity of contexts and the proliferation of profiles make …

In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid growth in the availability of digital multimedia on various application platforms and domains. Consequently, the problem of information overload has become more and more serious. In order to tackle the challenge, various multimedia recommendation technologies have been developed by different research communities (e.g., multimedia systems, information retrieval, machine learning and computer version). Meanwhile, many commercial web systems (e.g., Flick, YouTube, and Last.fm) have successfully applied recommendation techniques to provide users personalized content and services in a convenient and flexible way. When looking back, the information retrieval (IR) community has a long history …

Cybersecurity is a national priority in this big data era. Because of negative externalities and the resulting lack of economic incentives, companies often underinvest in security controls, despite government and industry recommendations. Although many existing studies on security have explored technical solutions, only a few have looked at the economic motivations. To fill the gap, we propose an approach to increase the incentives of organizations to address security problems. Specifically, we utilize and process existing security vulnerability data, derive explicit security performance information, and disclose the information as feedback to organizations and the public. We regularly release information on the …
Dynamic Two-Sided Pricing Under Sequential Innovation, Mei Lin, Xiajun Pan
Dynamic Two-Sided Pricing Under Sequential Innovation, Mei Lin, Xiajun Pan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Many two-sided platforms offer innovative hardware products that improve in quality and enter the market sequentially. We analyze the impact of the decrease in the production cost on a monopoly platform owner's dynamic two-sided pricing problem, in which buyers are strategic and exert a cross-side network effect to the seller side. Our findings show that a greater decrease in cost raises the optimal price of the low-quality product and allocates more buyer-side demand to the future market. Furthermore, such decrease in cost may also lead to a higher optimal price for the future higher-quality product, given a sufficiently significant quality …

Guardian: Hypervisor As Security Foothold For Personal Computers, Yueqiang Cheng, Xuhua Ding
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Personal computers lack of a security foothold to allow the end-users to protect their systems or to mitigate the damage. Existing candidates either rely on a large Trusted Computing Base (TCB) or are too costly to widely deploy for commodity use. To fill this gap, we propose a hypervisor-based security foothold, named as Guardian, for commodity personal computers. We innovate a bootup and shutdown mechanism to achieve both integrity and availability of Guardian. We also propose two security utilities based on Guardian. One is a device monitor which detects malicious manipulation on camera and network adaptors. The other is hyper-firewall …

Accountable Trapdoor Sanitizable Signatures, Junzuo Lai, Xuhua Ding, Yongdong Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Sanitizable signature (SS) allows a signer to partly delegate signing rights to a predetermined party, called sanitizer, who can later modify certain designated parts of a message originally signed by the signer and generate a new signature on the sanitized message without interacting with the signer. One of the important security requirements of sanitizable signatures is accountability, which allows the signer to prove, in case of dispute, to a third party that a message was modified by the sanitizer. Trapdoor sanitizable signature (TSS) enables a signer of a message to delegate the power of sanitization to any parties at anytime …

In a data streaming model, records or documents are pushed from a data owner, via untrusted third-party servers, to a large number of users with matching interests. The match in interest is calculated from the correlation between each pair of document and user query. For scalability and availability reasons, this calculation is delegated to the servers, which gives rise to the need to protect the privacy of the documents and user queries. In addition, the users need to guard against the eventuality of a server distorting the correlation score of the documents to manipulate which documents are highlighted to certain …

Computers are dummying us down. Book learning has given way to computer speak. Modern technology overwhelms us. Users are enthralled with gadgets to the point where they have lost themselves in them. We have abandoned, perhaps mislaid, our sense for ignorance; what it means to be illiterate in the 21st century; and working definitions for truth. In this environment a dab of education (enough to make somebody lethal), a sprinkle of bigotry, and fear produce people with ideas that are bad for us. This essay cautions against trucking with those folk; it marks what they do in the media that …

The underpinnings for law school training has or, I submit, soon will be, outstripped by real world requirements dictated by the demands of the legal profession marketplace. This Article is designed to add to the discourse relating to the question of what law schools supply and what law practice requires-a paradigm shift in the methodology of implementing legal education. The Article begins by reporting on the state of the law school process and how it has evolved from an apprenticeship, replete with on-the-job training, to an intellectual exercise that is somewhat removed from the requirements for becoming competent legal professionals. …

By using this method, we obtain abundant new types of exact traveling wave solutions.
Temperature Dependence For The Synthetic Magnetization Of A Rotating Bose Gas In Harmonic Trap, Azza M. Elbadry
Temperature Dependence For The Synthetic Magnetization Of A Rotating Bose Gas In Harmonic Trap, Azza M. Elbadry
Turkish Journal of Physics
In this paper, the temperature dependence for synthetic magnetization \bar M of a rotating Bose gas in harmonic trap and the magnetic field dependence of the critical temperature are investigated. A simple semiclassical approximation for the density of state approach is used in this study. The suggested approach simultaneously gives corrections to quantities which arise from the finite size and interatomic interaction effects. The calculated results show that the critical temperature decreases due to the increase of the synthetic magnetic field. The synthetic magnetization also exhibits a characteristic temperature dependence. It is proportional to T^3 if \bar T < \bar T_c, while it is proportional to T if \bar T > \bar T_c. …

Polytopes Arising From Binary Multi-Way Contingency Tables And Characteristic Imsets For Bayesian Networks, Jing Xi
Theses and Dissertations--Statistics
The main theme of this dissertation is the study of polytopes arising from binary multi-way contingency tables and characteristic imsets for Bayesian networks.
Firstly, we study on three-way tables whose entries are independent Bernoulli ran- dom variables with canonical parameters under no three-way interaction generalized linear models. Here, we use the sequential importance sampling (SIS) method with the conditional Poisson (CP) distribution to sample binary three-way tables with the sufficient statistics, i.e., all two-way marginal sums, fixed. Compared with Monte Carlo Markov Chain (MCMC) approach with a Markov basis (MB), SIS procedure has the advantage that it does not require …

Afc-Modeler: A Microsoft® Excel© Workbook Program For Modelling Assimilation Combined With Fractional Crystallization (Afc) Process In Magmatic Systems By Using Equations Of Depaolo (1981), Mehmet Keski̇n
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
AFC-Modeler is a user-friendly, interactive Microsoft Excel workbook program which is specifically designed to model up to ten theoretical AFC curves (corresponding to ten different r values; r being the ratio of mass assimilation rate to fractional crystallization rate) for a set of variables that can be interactively and precisely modified by the user (i.e. D, initial element concentration and isotope ratio in magma and element concentration and isotope ratio in wallrock). Being able to model ten curves for ten different 'r' values is an important feature of the program, because results of many studies indicate that the r values …

The Upper Cretaceous Calciclastic Submarine Fan Deposits In The Eastern Pontides, Ne Turkey: Facies Architecture And Controlling Factors, Di̇lek Sofracioğlu, Rai̇f Kandemi̇r
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Tonya Formation, which represents the uppermost part of the Mesozoic sequence in the Eastern Pontides, consists of calciturbidites in Trabzon and its surrounding region. Two stratigraphic sections of the unit were measured in the Hacımehmet and Gürbulak areas to decipher the distribution of rock types, facies architecture, sediment textures and depositional environment. The grain size, channels, suprafan lobes and slump structures of the sediments suggest that calciclastic sequences were deposited in a submarine fan system. Calcarenites/calcirudites and hemipelagic rocks, comprising an alternation of marls and mudstones, are the two dominant lithologies described in the studied calciclastic submarine fan system. …

Increasing Innovation Through Copyright Common Sense And Better Government Policy, Michael A. Carrier
Emory Law Journal
Innovation is crucial to the U.S. economy. But many of our laws and policies are not promoting innovation. This Essay addresses this problem. The first set of proposals focuses on copyright law. The recommendations avoid vague copyright law and suggest the elimination of statutory damages and personal liability in cases of secondary infringement. The second set of proposals highlights government policies that can be adjusted to achieve a more enlightened immigration policy, adequate funding for basic research, an increased focus on science and math education, and an extension of the research-and-development (R&D) tax credit.

Carbon Dioxide Laser-Assisted Staphylectomy In Brachycephalic And Nonbrachycephalic Dogs, Adolfo Maria Tambella, Cecilia Vullo, Fabrizio Dini, Angela Palumbo Piccionello, Anna Rita Attili
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Elongated soft palate is a common upper airway anomaly in brachycephalic dogs. The scientific literature considering this pathology in nonbrachycephalic dogs is limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the importance of the elongated soft palate in nonbrachycephalic dogs (n = 10), carrying out, at the same time, a comparison with selected brachycephalic dogs (n = 19), on the effect of carbon dioxide laser staphylectomy. The selected population had only elongated soft palates and no other disorders. The surgery was rapid and uncomplicated; no suture material was used. The comprehensive recovery was significant (P < 0.0001): 68.4% of brachycephalic dogs and 100% of nonbrachycephalic dogs had complete recovery. The incomplete recovery in older brachycephalic dogs matched a more advanced pathologic phase. This study suggests that, in the case of high respiratory tract alteration and poor exercise tolerance, it is imperative to consider in differential diagnosis the elongated soft palate in nonbrachycephalic breeds, too; their clinical signs are less severe and frequently underestimated. The surgical treatment has a favorable prognosis when the only alteration is elongated soft palate. The carbon dioxide laser has been confirmed as an useful option for staphylectomy in dogs.
