A Literature Review Of Uses And Attitudes Towards The Acceptance Of Assistive Real-Time Technology In The Voice Studio, Jeanine F. Wagner Nov 2013

A Literature Review Of Uses And Attitudes Towards The Acceptance Of Assistive Real-Time Technology In The Voice Studio, Jeanine F. Wagner

Research Papers

The human voice is a tool that not only communicates ideas and feelings, but also expresses and elicits emotions. Since the age of Manual Garcia (1805-1906), the inventor of the laryngeal mirror, singers and voice teachers have discussed, argued and philosophized about the most efficient manner in which to train any voice to reach its optimum capability. Singing techniques and the subsequent voice qualities have been strongly divided by cultural and personal preferences. Empiricists carefully guarded their teaching methods and shunned ideas that any other fields might have anything worthwhile to contribute to voice instruction. Voice teachers have been slow …

Robotic Fingerspelling Hand For The Deaf-Blind, Jerry Vin Nov 2013

Robotic Fingerspelling Hand For The Deaf-Blind, Jerry Vin

Master's Theses

Because communication has always been difficult for people who are deaf-blind, The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute (SKERI), in conjunction with the California Polytechnic State University Mechanical Engineering department, has commissioned the design, construction, testing, and programming of a robotic hand capable of performing basic fingerspelling to help bridge the communication gap. The hand parts were modeled using SolidWorks and fabricated using an Objet rapid prototyper. Its fingers are actuated by 11 Maxon motors, and its wrist is actuated by 2 Hitec servo motors. The motors are controlled by Texas Instruments L293D motor driver chips, ATtiny2313 slave microcontroller chips programmed to …

Teach For America And English Language Learners: Shortcomings Of The Organization’S Training Model, Megan Hopkins, Amy J. Heineke Nov 2013

Teach For America And English Language Learners: Shortcomings Of The Organization’S Training Model, Megan Hopkins, Amy J. Heineke

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Teach For America (TFA) places novice teachers, referred to as corps members, in several regions across the United States that have among the highest English language learner (ELL) populations in the nation. In this paper, we present a policy and program analysis of TFA’s training related to ELLs, arguing that the organization inadequately prepares teachers to work with this student population even though it places corps members in regions with high ELL populations. First, we describe the current Elementary and Secondary Education Act amendment that allows TFA corps members to be considered highly qualified without ELL-related training. Next, we analyze …

Are Teach For America Corps Members Highly Qualified To Teach English Learners?: An Analysis Of Teacher Preparation For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Populations, Amy J. Heineke, Megan Hopkins Nov 2013

Are Teach For America Corps Members Highly Qualified To Teach English Learners?: An Analysis Of Teacher Preparation For Culturally And Linguistically Diverse Populations, Amy J. Heineke, Megan Hopkins

Education: School of Education Faculty Publications and Other Works

Teach For America (TFA) places novice teachers, referred to as corps members, in several regions across the United States that have among the highest English learner populations in the nation. In light of this fact, we offer an examination of federal policy and recommend programmatic strategies to better prepare TFA corps members to serve English learners. First, we describe the current Elementary and Secondary Education Act amendment that allows TFA corps members to be considered highly qualified without adequate training to work with culturally and linguistically diverse students. Next, we analyze the organizational curriculum and teacher preparation approach specific to …

Duty In The Litigation-Investment Agreement: The Choice Between Tort And Contract Norms When The Deal Breaks Down, Anthony J. Sebok, W. Bradley Wendel Nov 2013

Duty In The Litigation-Investment Agreement: The Choice Between Tort And Contract Norms When The Deal Breaks Down, Anthony J. Sebok, W. Bradley Wendel

Articles

The article proposes a framework for regulating commercial litigation investment by drawing analogies to existing legal norms in similar economic activities. It argues that contract law, rather than tort law, is better suited to address the risks and challenges inherent in this growing market. The analysis emphasizes the importance of aligning legal norms with the economic realities of litigation investment, particularly in the commercial sector, where the stakes and dynamics differ significantly from consumer litigation. The authors advocate for a regulatory approach that balances protection against opportunism with the need to maintain efficient outcomes.

The Inclusiveness Of The New Originalism, James E. Fleming Nov 2013

The Inclusiveness Of The New Originalism, James E. Fleming

Faculty Scholarship

In tracing the arc of originalism from the old originalism to the new, I observe a shift from an exclusionary outlook to an inclusionary outlook, reflected in new originalists’ proclamations that “we are all originalists now.” As my title suggests, I am going to bring out the inclusiveness of the new originalism and ponder its implications. The new originalists have emphasized two developments: (1) the movement from a focus on “intention of the framers” to “original public meaning” and (2) the articulation of and emphasis on the distinction between interpretation and construction. My main points are two. First, the inclusiveness …

Love Of All Loves: Politics And Fraternity In The Charismatic Vision Of Chiara Lubich, Antonio Maria Baggio Oct 2013

Love Of All Loves: Politics And Fraternity In The Charismatic Vision Of Chiara Lubich, Antonio Maria Baggio

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

Chiara Lubich gave a fundamental contribution to the rediscovery of fraternity, particularly during the last years of her public engagement. The present article tries to understand the original meaning that Chiara gave to fraternity. Her interpretation is rooted within the Trinitarian reality and, particularly, in Jesus forsaken; fraternity is deeply linked with the mystical experience of ’49. There is a “logic” of fraternity, that rises from the Trinitarian “logic.” As a matter of fact, on one side we may fully understand her conception of fraternity only in the religious background of the Christian faith. On the other side, Chiara’s thought …

Towards A New Kind Of Cognition, Callan Slipper Oct 2013

Towards A New Kind Of Cognition, Callan Slipper

Claritas: Journal of Dialogue and Culture

To explore Chiara’s cognitive proposal, this article takes a phenomenological and interdisciplinary approach in an attempt to give insight into the experience of cognition and offer a basis for understanding it within the context of human development. The article outlines three modes of cognition that can be seen in human being using a schematic understanding of childhood development as a basis. These modes of cognition are then looked at from an evolutionary perspective seeing how human cognition, from the arrival of representational thought, has developed under the influence of culture more than of biology. This provides instruments for understanding the …

Language Therapy And Academic Achievement In Mathematics: Speech-Language Pathologists' Roles And Perspectives, Rachel Richter

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play an important role in language intervention among school-age children and have the potential to target academic achievement through language therapy. This study explored whether and how SLPs capitalize on language therapy to promote students’ math achievement and discussed SLPs’ practice addressing academic problems that co-occur with language disorders. Ten elementary school SLPs were interviewed to gather their perspectives on the relationship between language disorders and academic achievement. Results indicated that the SLPs acknowledged their responsibility to address academic difficulties and reported addressing academic difficulties presented by students in their caseload. Reading and writing were identified by …

Announcement As An Advertisement On The Example Of Hungarian Internet Job Offers, Agata Keller

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

Nowadays the advertisements are almost ubiquitous. Developement of the Internet opened way for new possibilities in advertising. In this article I tried to show that the online job offers are virtually commercials. It is visibile not only in applied linguistic and supralinguistic ways of persuasion but also in the identical goals of both the advertisements and the featured announcement, i.e. encouraging the readers to take specific actions, making the brand more popular and creating its positive image. The article was written on a basis of 1801 announcements published within three weeks at the turn of May and June 2013 on …

Teacher Evaluation Of The Scripted Reading Street Program And The Level Of Satisfaction Among Its Sub-Scale Components, Danielle Savino-Garzon Oct 2013

Teacher Evaluation Of The Scripted Reading Street Program And The Level Of Satisfaction Among Its Sub-Scale Components, Danielle Savino-Garzon

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) transformed the system of accountability for schools in the United States by implementing high stakes consequences for poor performance on standardized tests. Scripted curriculum has become a common practice as a means to prepare students to achieve the academic standards measured by standardized tests. The purpose of this mixed-methods research study was to explore teachers’ evaluation of the scripted Reading Street program and the implementation of the sub-scale components of this curriculum within their classrooms in one New Jersey urban district. This study was conducted to determine whether there were challenges …

Audio Sampling Of The Aymara Language, Aaron M. Waldrip, Dr. Cynthia Hallen Oct 2013

Audio Sampling Of The Aymara Language, Aaron M. Waldrip, Dr. Cynthia Hallen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Upon arriving in the city I couldn’t help but notice the barrenness of my surroundings. Sitting at approximately 12,500 feet above sea level, the city of El Alto in La Paz, Bolivia leaves a distinct impression upon your eyes, nose, and particularly your lungs. Your eyes see nothing but multifaceted shades of brown, your nose perceives smells that will never leave your memory, and your lungs scream so loudly for oxygen that you dare not walk too quickly, let alone run. However, a couple of draughts of mate de coca later, and your body seems to right itself.

An Approach To Automatic Spoken Language Identification Using Analogical Modeling, Nicholas A. Stetich, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale Oct 2013

An Approach To Automatic Spoken Language Identification Using Analogical Modeling, Nicholas A. Stetich, Dr. Deryle Lonsdale

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Although it is often repeated, perhaps to the point of becoming cliché, we live in an age of information. Information is readily available, and in a variety of formats, especially electronic formats. Our ability to digitize data, or make it available for computer access, has increased dramatically over the last several decades, due to the exponential growth of computers’ processing power and storage capabilities. However, much of this data is unorganized, and exists in many formats (text, audio, video), and in many different languages. Expert linguists can often identify what language is being spoken in a particular piece of audio …

Paraguayan Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Phonological Adaptation, Curtis W. Snyder, Dr. Willis Fails Oct 2013

Paraguayan Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Phonological Adaptation, Curtis W. Snyder, Dr. Willis Fails

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the Paraguayan constitution of 1992, Guaraní gained a particularly interesting status as it became recognized by the government as the “national” language of Paraguay with Spanish being the “official” language. Although not all people in Paraguay speak Guaraní, the overwhelming majority do. Figure one illustrates the percentages of people that belong to the different linguistic communities of Paraguay. If we add the Bilingual Spanish and the Monolingual Guaraní sections we see that 92% of Paraguayans can speak Guaraní, either as a native or second language. The percentage of the total population included in this group is astonishing and definitely …

Constructing Design Knowledge Built Up On The Kindergarten Education, Meryem Yalcin Oct 2013

Constructing Design Knowledge Built Up On The Kindergarten Education, Meryem Yalcin

Learn X Design Conference Series

This study aims to further the growing body of knowledge about design education with an alternative view; discussing the importance of beginning it at the kindergarten which ideally suits to the approach " develop the creative-thinking skills". In an environment where children" imagines, creates, practices, modifies, recognises, manipulates, shares etc..." knowledge, experiences and objects through play are crucial issues in the design education. Derived from this concern the study brings the argument of advancing and directing early childhood education on the basis of 'basic design issues' such as design principles, conceptualization, 2D/3D spatial allocation and composition more comprehensively which will …

Universal Design For Learning In Postsecondary Settings: One Faculty Member’S Journey Toward Making Learning Accessible For All Students, Diana J. Larocco, Deanne Anderson, Maryjo Archambault

NERA Conference Proceedings 2013

This paper presents a description of a project designed to field test a research-developed faculty development series on embedding Universal Design for Learning (CAST, 2011) into curriculum, instruction, and assessment. A description of Goodwin College, where the project was enacted, is presented. Goodwin is a four-year private not-for-profit postsecondary institution with an open admissions process and is similar in many ways to Connecticut’s community colleges. Highlights from and reflections on the journey of translating knowledge and skills gained are offered as examples of how professional development in universal design can affect faculty practice.

The Possibility Of Computer Modeling Language Change, Jonathan Mccollum, Dr. David Bowie Oct 2013

The Possibility Of Computer Modeling Language Change, Jonathan Mccollum, Dr. David Bowie

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Language is an ever changing method of communication. Linguists, in their systematic studies of languages, attempt to explain the changes that modify and sometimes eliminate languages altogether. Much research has been employed to discover the methods that keep language continually evolving.
