Reading The Gospel Of Philip As A Temple Text, Gaye Strathearn Jan 2013

Reading The Gospel Of Philip As A Temple Text, Gaye Strathearn

Faculty Publications

For many Latter-day Saints, their introduction to studies on Latter-day Saint ritual was in reading the works of Hugh Nibley, who specifically focused on the rites of the temple. Nibley was the first to point out the parallels between the religious behavior of earlier cultures, especially the ritual experiences of early Christianity, and our own. In this paper, Gaye continues this tradition as she introduces us to the Gnostic text the Gospel of Philip and points out intriguing similarities between this text and our own temple experience

An Environmental History Of Malawi's 'Island In The Sky': The Mulanje Cedar And Imperial Forestry In British Nyasaland, 1890-1964., Kathleen J. Fichtel Jan 2013

An Environmental History Of Malawi's 'Island In The Sky': The Mulanje Cedar And Imperial Forestry In British Nyasaland, 1890-1964., Kathleen J. Fichtel

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The Mulanje cedar is a unique and endangered tree that is found only within the confines of the Mt. Mulanje Forest Reserve in southeastern Malawi. This dissertation examines the relationship between scientific forestry as introduced by British experts and the role and status of the endangered cedar. The British, like forest experts and other natural scientists today, believed the tree to be in danger of imminent demise. Economic expediency made it so that the tree was harvested by colonial officials from the beginning though they attempted to replace what they had taken. This did not work. Throughout the past century, …

Regulating Resort To Force: Form And Substance Of The Un Charter Regime, Matthew C. Waxman Jan 2013

Regulating Resort To Force: Form And Substance Of The Un Charter Regime, Matthew C. Waxman

Faculty Scholarship

Much of the international legal debate about regulating force and self-defence takes place on a substantive axis, focusing on the scope of force prohibitions and exceptions. This article instead focuses on their doctrinal form, or modes of argumentation and analysis through which facts are assessed in relation to legal directives, to illuminate how many of the assumptions about substantive policy goals and risks tend to be coupled with other assumptions about the way international law operates in this field. It shows that the flexible, adaptable standards favoured by some states, scholars, and other international actors and the fixed rules and …

[Introduction To] Why Is English Literature? Language And Letters For The Twenty-First Century, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Why Is English Literature? Language And Letters For The Twenty-First Century, Thomas Paul Bonfiglio

Bookshelf

Why is English synonymous with literature in the United States? At the turn of the twentieth century, literature courses were taught in the original language, and English did not signify literature any more than did French, Italian, or other modern languages. Fifty years later, English had colonized literature, and non-English literatures became configured as "foreign language study." This timely and important intervention into an on-going debate shows how the multilingual population of American faculty and students became progressively more monoglot, as did the configuration of literary studies. Thomas Paul Bonfiglio locates these changes within the anti-immigration, xenophobic, anti-labor, mercantile, militarist, …

[Introduction To] Couched In Death: Klinai And Identity In Anatolia And Beyond, Elizabeth P. Baughan Jan 2013

[Introduction To] Couched In Death: Klinai And Identity In Anatolia And Beyond, Elizabeth P. Baughan

Bookshelf

In Couched in Death, Elizabeth P. Baughan offers the first comprehensive look at the earliest funeral couches in the ancient Mediterranean world. These sixth- and fifth-century BCE klinai from Asia Minor were inspired by specialty luxury furnishings developed in Archaic Greece for reclining at elite symposia. It was in Anatolia, however—in the dynastic cultures of Lydia and Phrygia and their neighbors—that klinai first gained prominence not as banquet furniture but as burial receptacles. For tombs, wooden couches were replaced by more permanent media cut from bedrock, carved from marble or limestone, or even cast in bronze. The rich archaeological …

Probabilistic Cue Combination: Less Is More, Daniel Yurovsky, Ty W. Boyer, Linda B. Smith, Chen Yu Jan 2013

Probabilistic Cue Combination: Less Is More, Daniel Yurovsky, Ty W. Boyer, Linda B. Smith, Chen Yu

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Learning about the structure of the world requires learning probabilistic relationships: rules in which cues do not predict outcomes with certainty. However, in some cases, the ability to track probabilistic relationships is a handicap, leading adults to perform non-normatively in prediction tasks. For example, in the dilution effect, predictions made from the combination of two cues of different strengths are less accurate than those made from the stronger cue alone. Here we show that dilution is an adult problem; 11-month-old infants combine strong and weak predictors normatively. These results extend and add support for the less is more hypothesis: limited …

Verbal Response Modes In Action:Microrelationships As The Building Blocks Of Relationship Role Dimensions, Ayesha Shaikh, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William B. Stiles Jan 2013

Verbal Response Modes In Action:Microrelationships As The Building Blocks Of Relationship Role Dimensions, Ayesha Shaikh, Lynne M. Knobloch-Fedders, William B. Stiles

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Dimensions of interpersonal relationships, such as attentiveness, directiveness, and presumptuousness, have typically been assessed through impressionistic ratings or by aggregate scores derived from coding of specific (e.g., verbal) behaviors. However, the meanings of these dimensions rest on the interpersonal microrelationships that are actually observed by the raters or coders. In this qualitative study, the way these global relationship qualities were built from microrelationships at the utterance level was examined in passages from one medical interaction. Applications of microrelationships to future communications research are suggested.

Examining The Hidden Ideologies Within Cultural Competence Discourses Among Library And Information Science (Lis) Students: Implications For School Library Pedagogy, Kafi D. Kumasi, Renee F. Hill

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

In order to provide culturally responsive instruction to all students, school library professionals need to recognize the various discourses around cultural competence that exist in the field of library and information science (LIS) and understand the broader meanings that are attached to these discourses. This study presents an evaluation of the underlying ideologies that are embedded in the textual responses of a group of LIS students reporting on their perceived levels of cultural competence preparation. The results reveal that there are dominant and competing discourses around cultural competence in the LIS field, which are important to make visible. The paper …

The Implications Of Linguistic Bondage In The Lais Of Marie De France : An Analysis Of The Oath In Bisclavret, Equitan, And Yonec, Barry Rich Jan 2013

The Implications Of Linguistic Bondage In The Lais Of Marie De France : An Analysis Of The Oath In Bisclavret, Equitan, And Yonec, Barry Rich

Theses

In this thesis, I examine Marie de France's applications of the oath in her Breton lais. With her own admittance that she writes to pay homage to a king, I argue that the oath represents a prominent feature of language and rhetoric that Marie uses to demonstrate the overarching power structure of the feudal society in which she is bound. I also propose that she critiques the sovereign's usurpation of language by using this trope throughout her works. Looking specifically at "Bisclavret," "Equitan," and "Yonec," I contend that Marie looks at how the sovereign uses the oath of power to …

Secularity, Religion And The Possibilities For Religious Citizenship, Lyn Parker, Chang Yau Hoon Jan 2013

Secularity, Religion And The Possibilities For Religious Citizenship, Lyn Parker, Chang Yau Hoon

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Scholarly predictions of the secularization of the world have proven premature. We see a heterogeneous world in which religion remains a significant and vital social and political force. This paper reflects critically upon secularization theory in order to see how scholars can productively respond to the, at least partly, religious condition of the world at the beginning of the twenty first century. We note that conventional multiculturalism theory and policy neglects religion, and argue the need for a reconceptualization of understanding of religion and secularity, particularly in a context of multicultural citizenship — such as in Australia and Indonesia. We …

Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice Jan 2013

Illuminating Teaching And Learning: Students' Metacognition And Teacher Responsiveness In One College Developmental Reading Class, Tasha A. Vice

Reading Faculty Publications (Archived)

College students enrolled in a developmental reading program often do not perceive themselves as remedial readers, have low self-esteem about their abilities, or have a limited understanding about reading and therefore are unable to engage themselves with effective reading strategies. The challenge for educators in developmental college reading is to engage and motivate students with educational methods that create an awareness and understanding of reading by using strategies and practices appropriate for students’ diverse educational needs also necessary for their reading achievement. At the same time students need to develop the metacognitive awareness of their own knowledge of and use …

Collecting Paradata For Measurement Error Evaluations, Kristen Olson, Bryan Parkhurst Jan 2013

Collecting Paradata For Measurement Error Evaluations, Kristen Olson, Bryan Parkhurst

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Survey researchers and methodologists seek to have new and innovative ways of evaluating the quality of data collected from sample surveys. Paradata, or data collected for free from computerized survey instruments, have increasingly been used in survey methodological work for this purpose (Couper, 1998). One error source that has been studied using paradata is measurement error, or the deviation of a response from a “true” value (Groves, 1989; Biemer and Lyberg, 2003). Although used in psychological literature since the 1980s (see Fazio, 1990, for an early review) and adapted to telephone interviews by Bassili in the early 1990s (Bassili and …

Analyzing Paradata To Investigate Measurement Error, Ting Yan, Kristen Olson

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Paradata for purposes of investigating and understanding measurement error include response times, keystrokes, mouse clicks, behavior codes, vocal characteristics, and interviewer evaluations. Description and collection of these paradata is examined extensively in Chapter 3. In this chapter, we focus on the analysis of these types of paradata.

We begin this chapter with a brief review of empirical literature using paradata to investigate measurement error in Section 4.2. Section 4.3 describes the specific analytic steps taken and issues to be considered when analyzing paradata for the purpose of examining measurement error. Examples taken from published research work are provided in Section …

Election Data Visualisation, Elena Long Jan 2013

Election Data Visualisation, Elena Long

Plymouth Business School Theses

Visualisations of election data produced by the mass media, other organisations and even individuals are becoming increasingly available across a wide variety of platforms and in many different forms. As more data become available digitally and as improvements to computer hardware and software are made, these visualisations have become more ambitious in scope and more user-friendly. Research has shown that visualising data is an extremely powerful method of communicating information to specialists and non-specialists alike. This amounts to a democratisation of access to political and electoral data. To some extent political science lags behind the progress that has been made …

The Effects Of Processing Fluency On Restorative Environments, Andrea Ahles Jan 2013

The Effects Of Processing Fluency On Restorative Environments, Andrea Ahles

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attention Restoration Theory (ART) maintains that directed attention, a type of attention that requires effort, is a resource that is susceptible to fatigue after prolonged use. This directed attention fatigue, commonly known as mental fatigue, is a factor linked to performance and safety decline in the workplace. Many studies have found that contact with nature promotes restoration from directed attention fatigue; however, there is little research on how nature has this effect. The aim of the present study was to explore whether natural environments have restorative potential given their higher degree of processing fluency. College students ( N =78) were …

East Versus West: Effectiveness Of Knowledge Acquisition And Impact Of Cultural Dislocation Issues For Mainland Chinese Students Across Ten Commonly Used Instructional Techniques, Kumaran Rajaram, Sarbari Bordia

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

The research analyses the new trend of training culturally diverse students in western style business education in Singapore where a substantial number of mainland Chinese students enroll in business courses. Building on ideas by Hosfede (1984), Morey and Frangioso (1998) and Rodrigues (2004), 402 mainland Chinese students who were enrolled in Singaporean business training programs provided differential ratings of the learning effectiveness, familiarity, comfort and ease of knowledge transfer for each of the ten commonly used instructional strategies previously investigated by Rodrigues (2004) based on a questionnaire. Both “active” and “passive” instructional techniques facilitate effective learning and acquiring of knowledge …

The Power Of The Hula: A Performance Text For Appropriating Identity Among First Hawaiian Youth, Cesily Hong Jan 2013

The Power Of The Hula: A Performance Text For Appropriating Identity Among First Hawaiian Youth, Cesily Hong

Doctoral Dissertations

Hawaii is an exotic land with a rich history and a culture imbued with meaning, including the performing arts. Such facets of any land need to be understood and preserved for future generations. The most significant aspect of Hawaiian arts is the hula kahiko, a text in motion, which when performed displays the story of Hawaii's past. The hula was forbidden by Protestant missionaries in the 1820's and was reduced to near cultural extinction. As a result, many First Hawaiians do not clearly understand the richness of their own history. Without this understanding, it is difficult for them to have …

Electronic Portfolios As Living Portals: A Narrative Inquiry Into College Student Learning, Identity, And Assessment, Celeste Fowles Nguyen Jan 2013

Electronic Portfolios As Living Portals: A Narrative Inquiry Into College Student Learning, Identity, And Assessment, Celeste Fowles Nguyen

Doctoral Dissertations

As universities increasingly utilize electronic portfolios, college students are asked more than ever to create ePortfolios for academics, assessment, or advising. This study shifts an analysis of ePortfolios from prior epistemological approaches, where ePortfolios have been explored as a tool to measure student progress, onto an ontological perspective, where they are a medium for new understandings about self and others. This research examines the influence of college students' electronic portfolios on learning, identity, and assessment. The broader intention of this study is to create a narrative of students' experiences with ePortfolios that integrates critical hermeneutic theory.

The research protocol of …

Foreign Language Learning In A Non-School Environment: Effects Of Simulated Immersion Training On Affective Factors In Learners' Experience, Eunsook Mcniel-Cho

Doctoral Dissertations

This study explored the effects of immersion training on the learner's affective behaviors such as motivation and attitude, anxiety, and self-confidence in foreign language acquisition at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center. Much research has been conducted on the effectiveness of immersion programs, but no previous research examined a short-term simulated immersion training that is integrated into a language course curriculum. Furthermore, no prior research exists on the effects of immersion on affective factors among military linguists.

This research method consisted of mixed quantitative and qualitative methods utilizing pretest score (DLAB), surveys, observations, and interviews. The study design was …

The Effects Of Elaborative Vocabulary Instruction On The Vocabulary, Written Explanations, And Knowledge Structures Of Sixth-Grade Students With And Without Disabilities, Marijude Wolf

Doctoral Dissertations

Writing is a complex process that presents challenges for middle school teachers and their students with and without disabilities. A particular area of difficulty is the application of content-area vocabulary in the explanatory writing of sixth-grade students. This two-group quasi-experimental study investigated the effectiveness of an elaborative vocabulary strategy instruction on the vocabulary scores, concept map scores, explanatory writing, and self-efficacy and attitudes towards writing of 104 sixth-grade students with and without disabilities enrolled in an urban charter public middle school. The study was conducted over a four-week period. The results showed that the elaborative vocabulary instruction had statistically significant …
