A Metaphor's Power Over Salience And Ideology, Aaron Mckinnon

Communication Studies

A look at the pathways of behavior influenced by the metaphor "Garbage Patch" that represents the accumulation of plastic marine debris in the world's oceans. The metaphor "plastic soup" is suggested as a solution to the rhetoric that surrounds the environmental ideology of the solution to the issue.

Se Habla Inglés Aquí: Las Dificultades En El Tratamiento De La Depresión En Latinos En Los Estados Unidos, Melissa Kim Dundas Mar 2013

Se Habla Inglés Aquí: Las Dificultades En El Tratamiento De La Depresión En Latinos En Los Estados Unidos, Melissa Kim Dundas

World Languages and Cultures

This project attempts to identify and bring to light the issues relating to treatment of Latinos and native Spanish speakers in the United States. The stigma surrounding depression is already strong in the U.S., and when minorities, who tend to have their own views of mental health disorders and who are less likely to seek treatment for any mental health disorder they might have, are added to the picture, the rates of treatment go drastically down. There are many factors that play into whether or not Latinos will seek treatment for depression, many of which revolve around language and culture, …

Towards A Framework Of A Semiotics Of Dance, Nikoleta Popa Blanariu Mar 2013

Towards A Framework Of A Semiotics Of Dance, Nikoleta Popa Blanariu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Towards a Framework of a Semiotics of Dance" Nicoleta Popa Blanariu constructs a framework of based on de Saussure's, Peirce's, and Barthes's thought. She applies Ferdinand de Saussure's concept of semiosis defined as a cultural system of conventions. In dance this occurs when choreographic signs are encoded, for example in magic, ritual, or religious expressions of movement. Further, Charles Sanders Peirce's concept of the role of "intelligent consciousness" is crucial for the engendering of signification and thus to dance. In dance, the choreographer "interprets" the world and by means of selection and interpretation, the choreographic sign …

(Wp 2013-02) Economists’ Odd Stand On The Positive-Normative Distinction: A Behavioral Economics View, John B. Davis Mar 2013

(Wp 2013-02) Economists’ Odd Stand On The Positive-Normative Distinction: A Behavioral Economics View, John B. Davis

Economics Working Papers

This chapter examines economists’ indefensible attachment to the positive-normative distinction, and suggests a behavioral economics explanation of their behavior on the subject. It reviews the origins of the distinction in Hume’s guillotine and logical positivism, and shows how they form the basis for Robbins’ understanding of value neutrality. It connects philosophers’ rejection of logical positivism to their rejection of the positive-normative distinction, explains and modifies Putnam’s view of fact-value entanglement, and identifies four main ethical value judgments that contemporary economists employ. The behavioral explanation of economists’ denial of these value judgments emphasizes loss aversion and economists’ social identity as economists.

The Academic Experiences Of Native Spanish Speakers In The Traditional Spanish Classroom, Lealane Sanders, David Alley Mar 2013

The Academic Experiences Of Native Spanish Speakers In The Traditional Spanish Classroom, Lealane Sanders, David Alley

Dimensions

This study examines the academic experiences of heritage Spanish-speakers who were placed in a traditional Spanish class for non-Spanish speakers at the secondary level. Each of the participants in the study demonstrated advanced-levels of oral proficiency in Spanish yet each was placed in a beginning-level Spanish class. An ethnographic case study method was used to explore the effect of this inappropriate placement on the students’ linguistic abilities and academic identities. This study addresses an all-toocommon practice that fails to advance heritage language students’ knowledge of their native language. The needs of these students differ from those of non-native speakers, and …

Respecting Democratic Constitutional Change, Craig M. Scott

Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents

On Monday, January 28, 2013, I was privileged to table, on behalf of the NDP and in my capacity as Official Opposition Critic for Democratic and Parliamentary Reform, Bill C-470, An Act Respecting Democratic Constitutional Change. On the same day, my colleague Romeo Saganash, NDP Critic for Aboriginal Intergovernmental Affairs, tabled Bill C-469 that would require Canadian law and practice to respect the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In this way, on that day, the New Democratic Party was making sure that Canadians know that our party sees the building and nurturing of sustainable and cooperative …

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton Mar 2013

The Dangers Of Diversity: Ethnic Fractionalization And The Rule Of Law, Michael Touchton

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Research linking ethnic cleavages to economic underdevelopment is a hallmark of recent efforts to explain economic growth. Similarly, the rule of law as a credible commitment to property rights and contract enforcement is also identified with economic development. Rather than treating these factors as rival explanations for economic development around the world, I propose the rule of law as the causal mechanism through which ethnic fractionalization (EF) influences growth in many countries. I argue ethnic diversity negatively impacts the rule of law due to the prevalence of ethnically-based patronage networks in developing countries. Public officials, I argue, face greater incentives …

Contemporary Theatre In Catalonia: A Story Of Creative Struggles, Sharon G. Feldman Mar 2013

Contemporary Theatre In Catalonia: A Story Of Creative Struggles, Sharon G. Feldman

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

The term “normalization” is typically employed within Catalan political and linguistic circles to refer to the process of recuperation, revival, and relegitimization of Catalan cultural and intellectual life that ensued following the period of the Franco dictatorship (1939-1975). Here, to be “normal” is to move from the periphery to the centre, to be regarded as valid rather than illicit, and to be visible and vociferous—even obvious and everyday—instead of obstructed, silenced, or relegated to the margins of exile, the recesses of memory, or the darkness of invisibility. The path along which the contemporary Catalan theatre scene has struggled to recover …

A Self-Training Framework For Automatic Identification Of Exploratory Dialogue, Zhongyu Wei, Yulan He, Simon Shum, Rebecca Ferguson, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong Mar 2013

A Self-Training Framework For Automatic Identification Of Exploratory Dialogue, Zhongyu Wei, Yulan He, Simon Shum, Rebecca Ferguson, Wei Gao, Kam-Fai Wong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The dramatic increase in online learning materials over the last decade has made it difficult for individuals to locate information they need. Until now, researchers in the field of Learning Analytics have had to rely on the use of manual approaches to identify exploratory dialogue. This type of dialogue is desirable in online learning environments, since training learners to use it has been shown to improve learning outcomes. In this paper, we frame the problem of exploratory dialogue detection as a binary classification task, classifying a given contribution to an online dialogue as exploratory or non-exploratory. We propose a self-training …

From Orality To Literacy: A Curricular Model For Intensive Second-Year Collegiate Language Instruction, Per Urlaub, Jan Uelzmann

Dimensions

This article documents a curriculum reform of the second-year German program at the Department of Germanic Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. This curricular reform had two goals: (1) compressing two semesters of intermediate-level language instruction into a single semester; (2) incorporating a strategy-based approach to literary reading in the second language. The article will first compare the previous curriculum and then introduce a conceptual framework for the reform process. This framework is based on three distinct pedagogical principles that the article will outline. Further, the article will describe the planning and implementation stages of the reform and …

Encouraging Tas To Embrace Communicative Language Teaching: An Investigation Of Pre-Service Training Practices, Paula Garrett-Rucks, Kerri Mccoy Mar 2013

Encouraging Tas To Embrace Communicative Language Teaching: An Investigation Of Pre-Service Training Practices, Paula Garrett-Rucks, Kerri Mccoy

Dimensions

This article begins by synthesizing research findings concerning the increasingly important role graduate student teaching assistants (TAs) play in fostering undergraduate learners’ oral proficiency. Despite this important role, our review of TA training practices in the literature found a lack of research on the preparation TAs receive prior to beginning their foreign language instruction. Accordingly, the present study examines incoming TAs’ perceptions of their command of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) techniques presented at an interdepartmental, pre-service orientation at a large Midwestern research university. Using a qualitative approach, we investigated the unique ways in which this orientation influenced novice and experienced …

Online Translator Usage In Foreign Language Writing, Errol M. O’Neill Mar 2013

Online Translator Usage In Foreign Language Writing, Errol M. O’Neill

Dimensions

With the increasing availability of technology, one issue that has arisen in foreign language education is the use of online translation (OT) sites that claim to convert text from one language to another but are generally prohibited for classwork due to ethical and pedagogical concerns. In a study to explore the effects of OT usage, teacher raters were able to determine, to a statistically significant level, on which compositions OT was used; there were, however, a number of cases for which OT use went undetected and some instances it was incorrectly suspected. This article discusses the results of the study …

Staying In The Target Language While Teaching Middle School And High School, William Worden Mar 2013

Staying In The Target Language While Teaching Middle School And High School, William Worden

Dimensions

This article advocates the use of the target language at all times in the classroom at all levels of language instruction. While addressed specifically to middle school and high school teachers, the article suggests an approach to language instruction that can be implemented for students of all ages. After recounting how the author’s experience teaching high school students convinced him to teach exclusively in Spanish, the article then addresses possible objections to the instructional method, presents topics to cover when teaching Day 1 of Level 1 of a language, and discusses ways to help students thrive in an all-target-language classroom.

Evaluating Effective Teaching In The 21st Century World Language Classroom, Christina Huhn Mar 2013

Evaluating Effective Teaching In The 21st Century World Language Classroom, Christina Huhn

Dimensions

Stronge, Ward, and Grant (2011) emphasize the fundamental need to evaluate the teaching that occurs in our classrooms. They add that in order to effect change in the quality of our education, we must continue to investigate what constitutes effective teaching as it has significant implications for both the education of and assessment of teachers and their students. In West Virginia, what occurs in world language (WL) classrooms has been the topic of ongoing discussions between members of the state foreign language teachers association, current teachers, and the state’s WL coordinators. Despite notable positive momentum in WL education in the …

Evaluating Use Of An Online Intervention For Cancer Patients With Distress, Amanda Gorlick Mar 2013

Evaluating Use Of An Online Intervention For Cancer Patients With Distress, Amanda Gorlick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Internet-based interventions have been effective in improving cancer survivors' psychosocial functioning. However, low levels of engagement in these interventions have been common. A qualitative interview study was conducted to assess cancer survivors' needs. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a diverse sample of 25 cancer survivors who were minimally engaged (i.e. spent around 1 hour total on website) with the online intervention created by Owen and colleagues. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using content analysis. Twenty themes were identified from the individual interviews. With an average Kappa in the near perfect range (Kappa= 0.89), the obtained codes were deemed a …

Linguistic Predictors Of Peer Responsiveness In An Online Cancer Support Group, Andrea Lewallen

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Introduction: Little is known about how group cohesion develops in online support group communities. Previous research suggests that message content, selfdisclosure, and emotional expression may be central to this process. The purpose of this study was to identify linguistic and qualitative characteristics of participants.' Messages that predict how other participants respond in an asynchronous discussion board for cancer-related distress. Method: 525 discussion board messages posted by 116 participants in the healthspace.net trial were collected. Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (2001) was used to identify linguistic markers of emotional expression and pronoun use. Message topics were identified using qualitative analysis. Logistic …

The Illinois Conveyances Act: A 200-Year-Old Labyrinth Whose Changing Walls Continue To Provide Inadequate Protection For Subsequent Purchasers, Cory Torgesen Mar 2013

The Illinois Conveyances Act: A 200-Year-Old Labyrinth Whose Changing Walls Continue To Provide Inadequate Protection For Subsequent Purchasers, Cory Torgesen

Southern Illinois University Law Journal

The Illinois Conveyances Act has been a muddled and marshy maze for nearly two centuries.  As written, it appears to be a pure notice statute.  However, courts have interpreted it as a race-notice statute.  The difference in classification has far-reaching consequences and should not be overlooked. Illinois Senate Bill 2953, instead of reestablishing the Act’s proper application, would transform it to a pure-race act.  Although the passing of Senate Bill 2953 may eliminate any confusion about the current discord between classifications, it would create worse problems.  Instead of Senate Bill 2953, the Illinois General Assembly should adopt an unmistakable pure-notice …

Government Disapproval Of Religion, Jay Wexler Mar 2013

Government Disapproval Of Religion, Jay Wexler

BYU Law Review

The Supreme Court's "endorsement test" for evaluating the constitutionality of government sponsored symbols, displays, and messages regarding religion is notoriously controversial and has engendered enormous scholarly attention. In addition to government "endorsement" of religion, however, the test also prohibits the government from sending a message of "disapproval" of religion. The disapproval side of the endorsement test has not been subject to almost any scholarly discussion, which is not surprising given that until recently the courts have had no reason to entertain, much less sustain, challenges to alleged government disapproval of religion. In the last few years, however, due to a …

The Perceptions Of Behavioral Health Psychology Held By Medical Personnel In Oregon, Carleton H. Lloyd Mar 2013

The Perceptions Of Behavioral Health Psychology Held By Medical Personnel In Oregon, Carleton H. Lloyd

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

The purpose of the current research was to obtain medical personnel perceptions about the role of behavioral health psychology within their medical care practices in Oregon. Four hypotheses were explored. Hypothesis 1 asserted that medical personnel from urban, suburban, and rural locations would hold significantly different views; Hypothesis 2 suggested that the sample would more likely refer the more acute patients; Hypothesis 3 posited that medical personnel would make more referrals if they knew a mental health provider; Hypothesis 4 stated that there would be significant differences between the perceptions and practices of female and male members of this sample. …

Science, Technology, And Catholic Identity In The Education Of Professionals, Keith Douglass Warner O.F.M., David S. Caudill Mar 2013

Science, Technology, And Catholic Identity In The Education Of Professionals, Keith Douglass Warner O.F.M., David S. Caudill

Faculty Publications

The reception of Ex corde ecclesiae has been uneven across the disciplines, with scant interest in distinctly Catholic pedagogies outside of the humanities. This essay argues that Catholic universities can distinguish themselves by how they present science and technology in their curriculum by drawing from the interdisciplinary field of “science, technology & society,” or STS. We argue that discussions about Catholic identity, science, and human values can and should extend into the curriculum while simultaneously safeguarding academic freedom, and that this can readily be done in professional schools, such as law and engineering. We outline the contributions that STS as …

Fast And Frugal Heuristics For New Product Screening - Is Managerial Judgment "Good Enough?", Antonie J. Jetter, Fatima M. Albar Mar 2013

Fast And Frugal Heuristics For New Product Screening - Is Managerial Judgment "Good Enough?", Antonie J. Jetter, Fatima M. Albar

Engineering and Technology Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Project screening in the fuzzy front-end of product development is dominantly based on managerial judgment, yet little is known about the quality of heuristic screening decisions. This research models three commonly discussed fast and frugal (F&F)heuristics for project screening (take-the-best, tallying and elimination-by-aspect) and explores their performance. An illustrative dataset of 52 new product development projects is used to compare the performance of F&F heuristics against that of regression models, which reflect compensatory judgment behaviour. The findings uncover a 'less is more' effect that justifies the use of simple heuristics in early stage product screening; two out of the three …

Object-Oriented Programming: Some History, And Challenges For The Next Fifty Years, Andrew P. Black Mar 2013

Object-Oriented Programming: Some History, And Challenges For The Next Fifty Years, Andrew P. Black

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Object-oriented programming is inextricably linked to the pioneering work of Ole-Johan Dahl and Kristen Nygaard on the design of the Simula language, which started at the Norwegian Computing Centre in the Spring of 1961. However, object-orientation, as we think of it today—fifty years later—is the result of a complex interplay of ideas, constraints and people. Dahl and Nygaard would certainly recognize it as their progeny, but might also be amazed at how much it has grown up. This article is based on a lecture given on 22nd August 2011, on the occasion of the scientific opening of the Ole-Johan …

Examining The Relationship Between Information Obtained At Kindergarten Registration And Reading Comprehension Six Years Later, Paige Swartz Mar 2013

Examining The Relationship Between Information Obtained At Kindergarten Registration And Reading Comprehension Six Years Later, Paige Swartz

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this correlational study was to determine if variables known upon a group of students' enrollment in kindergarten had a significant relationship with their high-stakes reading assessment results obtained six years later, in the students' fifth grade year. Archival data was gathered from a rural northern Georgia school district. After a correlation matrix was constructed to examine the relationships among all variables of interest, bivariate linear regressions were used to determine whether the predictor variables explained any variance in the results of the fifth grade high-stakes reading assessment. Results indicated that one of the four predictor variables (vocabulary) …

Teacher Self-Efficacy: Common Core State Standards Within A 21st Century Skills Framework, John Wilborn Mar 2013

Teacher Self-Efficacy: Common Core State Standards Within A 21st Century Skills Framework, John Wilborn

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this case study was to understand teachers' self-efficacy in instructing 21st century learning skills in a high school core curriculum. This study examined the impact of three highly qualified teachers' attitudes toward instructing the Common Core State Standards 4C's (critical thinking, collaboration, communication, creativity) within a 21st century skills framework. Four research questions guided this study. What attitudes do teachers exhibit regarding instruction of 21st century learning skills? To what extent do teachers seek to engage students in creativity and innovation? To what degree do teachers implement neomillennial learning styles? How will the participants measure their own …
