Brian Friel’S Modern Irish Drama: Writing The Past, Present, & Future, Brian F. Mccabe
Brian Friel’S Modern Irish Drama: Writing The Past, Present, & Future, Brian F. Mccabe
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Postcolonial and historicized readings of Irish literatures describe the evils of colonialism, and the ways it has distorted nationhood and nation-building to serve the ends of greedy empires. But, what happens to a nation or nations in the vacuum after a major colonial power abandons the colony or is driven out? [excerpt]
Cultural Identity, Deafness And Sign Language: A Postcolonial Approach, Steven Loughran
Cultural Identity, Deafness And Sign Language: A Postcolonial Approach, Steven Loughran
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Franz Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks describes the experience of the recently de-colonized members of the Negro (as he refers to those of African descent) population living in Europe, particularly France, in the 1960s. A little over a decade later, Edward Said published Orientalism, thus adding to a growing discipline of scholarship in the fields of art, literature, and cultural studies called “Postcolonialism.” My essay attempts to show that Deaf persons who communicate with each other using sign language can be viewed as a colonized group, and that applying postcolonial theory to the study of their culture is appropriate.
A Christian Understanding Of Aesthetic Agency: A Theological Framework Of Resistance To Cultural Imperialism, Elise Edwards
A Christian Understanding Of Aesthetic Agency: A Theological Framework Of Resistance To Cultural Imperialism, Elise Edwards
LUX: A Journal of Transdisciplinary Writing and Research from Claremont Graduate University
Aesthetic agency refers to conditions, capacities, and states that inform artistic forms of acting and exerting power on social structures. In resistance to the marginalization of women of color, aesthetic agency is exercised through creative acts of culture-making and critique of such practices to challenge domination and representation of the oppressed other. To support this work as a feminist Christian ethicist, I construct a theological framework for aesthetic agency. This paper proposes a theological understanding of transformative aesthetics and then describes the exercise of aesthetic agency for Christian communities by using a television special, Black Girls Rock! as an example.

Chinese Images In English Poetry: A Comparative Reading Between Literary Fictionalization And Western Consciousness, Fanjian Zeng, Hanbo Liu
Chinese Images In English Poetry: A Comparative Reading Between Literary Fictionalization And Western Consciousness, Fanjian Zeng, Hanbo Liu
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
English poetry has a longstanding tradition in creating images about China. The images, from the perspective of literary anthropology by Wolfgang Iser, cannot be freed from interrelated unity of opposites between fictionalization, imagination and facts. While fictionalization and imagination are essential to poetry, their foundation and destination have to be the facts about China and the subjectivity of the Western. If native Chinese poetics is applied into a comparative reading of the images of China in English poetry, especially by focusing on the subject-object relationship shown in literary fictionalization and the Western consciousness through an empirical study based on linguistic …
From "和" To There: Marxist Hermeneutics With Chinese Characteristics, Gregory Mahoney Josef
From "和" To There: Marxist Hermeneutics With Chinese Characteristics, Gregory Mahoney Josef
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
We begin by synthesizing Karl Marx's historical periods qua modes of production with Michel Foucault's epistemological periodizations — epistemes, which we then combine with Fredric Jameson's work on ideologemes. Jameson's acknowledged weakness is a failure to address those positive if not utopian elements that might be instrumentally valuable for deconstructing or disassembling ideologemes in the course of historical progress. We then argue that such alternatives would be, ideally, concrete universals (具体的普遍), and would be both trans-epistemic and trans-historical. We then provide several reasons why it seems reasonable to search for the concrete universal par excellence within Chinese linguistic and philosophical …

Hand - I Coordination: Interpreting Student Writings And Drawings As Expressions Of Identity, Inda Schaenen
The Qualitative Report
In schools where curricular constraints and testing pressures narrow the ways in which students can take up identities as writers, longterm enrichment programs offer opportunities for the meaningful design of compositions. This paper, which presents the work of four elementary student participants in a writing workshop, shows how qualitative inquiry -- in particular critical multimodal analysis -- can enable a teacher researcher to see, interpret, and explain what might be going on in the writings and drawings of students, and how these illuminations help establish and expand the identities of students as writers. I focus especially on the work of …
That Thing That You Do: Comment On Joseph Massad’S 'Empire Of Sexuality', Lama Abu-Odeh
That Thing That You Do: Comment On Joseph Massad’S 'Empire Of Sexuality', Lama Abu-Odeh
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Massad’s thesis is simple, in fact, perfect in its simplicity. Empire is a terrible force that wants to penetrate, overpower and hegemonize. It has a center, a headquarters if you like, the West. It functions with two arms: capitalism (later neoliberal) and Euro-American hegemony. The first arm represents the objective drive of capital that transforms sites and cultures as it spreads the market in the shape of commodity exchange. It has become a universal system, Massad contends, though with varying effects on the center (West) from the periphery (rest). Whereas its march on the former has been totally transformative, in …

Facts: In August 2010, the Israel Police ordered major Israeli Internet access providers to block access to eight gambling websites operating outside the State of Israel. The orders were based on section 229 of the Penal Law that permits the District Police Commander to order the closure of any illegal gaming, lottery, or gambling place. The access providers complied with the orders and the Israel Internet Association petitioned the Administrative Affairs Court against the District Commander, contesting the closure, in the interests of Israeli web-users and the general public. The Internet access providers did not petition against the closure of …

Asking Big Questions With Digital Tools, Michelle Moravec
Women's History in the Digital World
This papers explore a range of women's liberation periodicals in the United States from 1969 to 1981 to answer the question, what can digital history can tell us about a bigger picture of the movement than that normally depicted in women's history. By exploring thousands of articles written as part of women's liberation and using various digital tools, such as word frequency, collocates and other text mining and topic modeling, a much larger group of authors and participants in women's liberation can be drawn into the histories of the movement.
Questions of particular interest center on changes to women's liberation …

Effect Of A Curricular And Professional Development Intervention On Elementary Teachers’ Science Content Knowledge, Brandon S. Diamond
Open Access Dissertations
Teacher science content knowledge (SCK) is an important but rarely studied construct. The study examined two research questions using two measures of SCK (i.e., knowledge test and questionnaire) in order to explore changes in SCK over time and to evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention at improving SCK as compared to the control group of teachers who did not receive the intervention: (1) Did participation in two years of the study have additional benefits over one year of participation? and (2) Did teacher background variables and treatment group (treatment vs. control) predict teacher SCK at the start of the intervention …

The Readability Of Principles Of Macroeconomics Textbooks, Sarah Tinkler, James Woods
The Readability Of Principles Of Macroeconomics Textbooks, Sarah Tinkler, James Woods
Economics Faculty Publications and Presentations
The authors evaluated principles of macroeconomics textbooks for readability using Coh-Metrix, a computational linguistics tool. Additionally, they conducted an experiment on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk Web site in which participants ranked the readability of text samples. There was a wide range of scores on readability indexes both between textbooks and within textbooks. Results from the Mechanical Turk experiment revealed that the Flesch Reading Ease Index does not predict which samples readers will prefer, but readers do prefer samples that are thematically similar, as identified by Latent Semantic Analysis. There were differences in the responses of native and non-native-but-proficient English speakers to …

Is There A New Kind Of Hero In Comics?, Frank Bramlett
Is There A New Kind Of Hero In Comics?, Frank Bramlett
English Faculty Publications
As a linguist, I am professionally devoted to the scientific study of language. But I have a confession: I used to be a literature major. As an undergraduate, I studied in a traditional English department, and I only accidentally found out about linguistics when I took a grammar class. In those literature courses, professors lectured about the different kinds of hero that have been discussed for thousands of years. In Greece, Aristotle wrote about the hero, and in the Middle Ages, the hero was construed differently. In the twentieth century, the notion of the anti-hero became possible, and writers in …

Semantic Modeling Of Requirements: Leveraging Ontologies In Systems Engineering, Masood S. Mir
Theses and Dissertations
The interdisciplinary nature of Systems Engineering (SE), having stakeholders from diverse domains with orthogonal facets, and need to consider all stages of lifecycle of system during conception, can benefit tremendously by employing Knowledge Engineering (KE) to achieve semantic agreement among all stakeholders for all stages of life cycle. Present practices in SE, such as using Vocabularies, Processes, Standards, and Modeling Languages are oriented towards manual reasoning of system concepts and relations to achieve semantic agreement. Semantic Web (SW) is being developed to provide KE and automated reasoning to the unstructured information, in huge amounts, present on the World Wide Web, …

Instructional Survey Instrument: Key Indicators Of Best Practices For Teachers Of English Learners In Grades 3-5, María Guadalupe Peña-Madison
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis explores the history of instruction for non-native English speakers in the United States and the evaluation, or lack thereof, of instructional practices. The survey instrument and accompanying User's Guide are designed for use in the upper elementary (third through fifth grade) school setting. The Survey Instrument presents twenty-six key indicators of effective instruction for English learners, structured around the commonly used Workshop Model lesson sequence of lesson opening, student work period, and lesson closing. The User's Guide provides classroom ready suggestions for implementation of each of the indicators as well as web-based video samples demonstrating the application of …
Instructional Technology Integration 2.0: Teacher Training And Socially Enabled Help Resources, Diane K. Lafferty
Instructional Technology Integration 2.0: Teacher Training And Socially Enabled Help Resources, Diane K. Lafferty
Theses and Dissertations
The shift in technology to user-centric, social, collaborative mediums has effected education in profound ways. However, the amount of technology available for use in the classroom and the quantity of related instructional materials has eclipsed teachers' ability to effectively trouble shoot and integrate 2.0 tools into their students' learning experience. Creating a help 2.0 resource center for a specific body of faculty not only alleviates information management difficulties but provides a model of a socially enabled 2.0 sustained tool to help educate educators.

Spectrum Of Support: Planning Services For Digital Humanities Scholars, Jennie Burroughs
Library Technology Conference
The emergence of digital humanities as a new form of research is challenging scholars to explore new research practices. In turn, the librarians and technologists who support them are challenged to explore new resources, tools, and services to support these efforts. This session will describe user needs in digital humanities, provide an overview of services offered by institutions supporting these scholars, and suggest planning processes based on work underway at the University of Minnesota.

Effects Of Syntactic Complexity On Speech Motor Performance, Kelsey Lewis Boyce
Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the possible influence of linguistic demands on speech motor control by measuring articulatory movement stability during conditions of increasing grammatical complexity. There were 60 participants in three age groups: 20-30 years, 40-50 years, and 60-70 years, with equal numbers of men and women in each group. These speakers produced 10 repetitions of five different sentence or phrase conditions. These five conditions included two baseline measurements and three sentences of varying complexity. Each complexity condition had an MLU count of 23, word length of 17, syllable length of 25, and contained the phrase open boxes of pompoms. …
